Real Madrid and Manchester City facing each other again in the Champions League is nothing more than the result of both sides' good performances in Europe.
That's according to journalist Axel Torres, who is fed up with people thinking otherwise. Cadena SER covered his comments today after an appearance on El Larguero.
Manchester City is set to face Real Madrid in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League next month. Pep Guardiola's side travel to the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu on March 11th before hosting the Spanish giants at the Etihad on the 17thth march.
At present, this encounter is an annual event for both sides. This meeting marks the fifth consecutive year and seventh time in seven seasons that these two sides will meet in the competition.
Real Madrid vs Manchester City again
It has been an interesting rivalry which is completely balanced at present. They have five wins each and five draws, while both have scored 29 goals.
Real Madrid have held the lead over the past two years, winning 6-3 on aggregate last season in the playoffs after a 4-3 win on penalties in the quarter-finals in 2024.
Some fans reacted negatively to the draw, dashing any hopes of something different for both clubs. However, Torres is not having it, nor is he accepting any suggestions of a UEFA fix.
"I'm surprised that we're talking as if it's a freak of UEFA that Real Madrid and Manchester City are against each other," he said.
uefa question
"Both this season and last season, it is determined by their league position. If they had not finished in this position, they would not have had the chance to face each other. There is nothing more than that.
“They have faced each other a lot, yes. But we used to say this was the great Clasico of Europe, and it is getting boring.
"In reality, there could be six Barça-Atlético de Madrid matches. Two in La Liga, two in the Copa del Rey, and maybe two in the Champions League. There will be six and they are welcome because they are also good matches."
