west ham united Star Crescencio Somerville has called on the Netherlands to remain calm ahead of the World Cup despite their shock defeat to Algeria.
Ronald Koeman’s side were defeated 1-0 by the African nation in one of their World Cup warm-up matches this week.
To say the least, it was a disappointing result for the Dutch, and naturally, raised some concerns ahead of the World Cup this summer. However, the West Ham star believes there is no need to panic.
“We have to stay calm. Of course, it’s a shame that we lost, but we still have a friendly match before the World Cup starts. Against Japan, we have to be prepared for that.” Voetbal Primer reported him as saying.
First Netherlands appearance
The 24-year-old was handed his first start for his country in the game, having been a surprise inclusion in his World Cup squad earlier this month.
Eager to impress, he turned down the opportunity to play for Suriname to secure his dream of playing for the Netherlands. He was happy with what he showed in the defeat but knew he needed more.
“I was really in the zone,” he said.
“There were some bad moments where I needed to be faster. In the final pass or when providing the right assist. Overall, it was okay. Still, I stand here with mixed emotions, because I would love to win.”
koman contact
The West Ham forward is eager to repay the faith shown in him by Ronald Koeman. And admits that he has had a lot of talks with the coach about what he wants from him.
“We have had a lot of contact,” he concluded.
“He knows me and my game. It’s good for a winger like me to have the manager’s trust. I have to live up to that trust. Every manager wants players who are reliable and can work hard for the team. I am also ready for the next match.”
