Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea's interest in Maxi Araujo is now getting a boost from the player himself, as both clubs made contact over a potential summer move.
As we reported earlierSpurs and Blues are among the Premier League teams keeping a close eye on the Sporting CP defender. Initial approaches have already arrived, and positions will remain open until the next window.
Now, the Uruguay international's latest comments suggest that England is firmly on his mind.
Maxi Araujo is preparing to face England with Uruguay in the match in London. The 26-year-old is currently training at Arsenal's facilities ahead of that match.
Talking to Uruguayan Outlet spectator sportHe explained his feelings about playing in England: "It will be my first time in England, let it be the first of many. It will be incredible, a big opportunity and I will make the most of it."
Those words won't go unnoticed at Tottenham or Chelsea, especially considering both clubs have already taken concrete steps by making contact.
Role, form and growing appeal
Maxi Araujo is in strong form at the moment for Sporting. He has scored six goals and provided four assists in 35 appearances this season, operating primarily as a left-back.
However, his versatility remains a major attraction. Under previous manager Ruben Amorim, he was often used as a wing-back or even further forward. Now, speaking about his Uruguayan role under Marcelo Bielsa, he has confirmed another positional change.
“I spoke to Marcelo [Bielsa]He asked me to quickly change the chip. It will be more or less the same, but a little further.” Araújo explained.
This flexibility strengthens his profile for Premier League clubs. Tottenham, in particular, value players who can operate in multiple systems. Meanwhile, Chelsea have continued to build a squad with tactical adaptability in mind.
London trip adds extra layer
Maxi Araujo will soon return to London with Sporting as they prepare to face Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals on April 15.
He is already looking forward to that match. The Uruguayan admitted it will provide an opportunity to assess the opponents he will soon face again at club level.
"We have faced them in the last Champions League, but now we are in a very good moment. We will face them again." He said.
Sporting suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Arsenal in the 2024/25 campaign. That result remains in the background as they are preparing for a different result this time.
plans for summer
Tottenham and Chelsea now have clear signings from both sides. Clubs have initiated contact, and players are speaking openly about England as part of their future.
There is still no sign of formal bids. Sporting's move will also be important, especially with an €80m (£69m) release clause, despite his market value being significantly lower.
Still, time may be on the Premier League clubs' side. There is currently no agreement on contract renewal, which leaves the door open for further progress.
Araújo is set to spend more time in the spotlight of English football, with matches taking place in London at both international and club level. This performance could accelerate a move that already appears to be gaining momentum.
