New York Giants ‘in the mix’ for big contribution on defense

The New York Giants have made some big changes to their defense this offseason, positioning the unit to take a step forward in 2026 under a new coaching staff. With summer approaching, it looks like another move may be on the way.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Giants are "in the mix" to sign defensive tackle DJ Reader following the signings of Shelby Harris and Leki Fotu.

Meanwhile, Sports Illustrated's Jason La Canfora recently reported that there is plenty of competition for Reeder's services, but the expectation as of now is that head coach John Harbaugh will move him to New York.

New York could take the lead on Calais Campbell, who recently signed with the Baltimore Ravens. However, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reported that Harbaugh and the Giants coaching staff were never on board with him.

Following the Dexter Lawrence trade, the Giants' depth chart on the defensive interior is led by Fotu, Harris and Darius Alexander. The club also used a sixth-round pick on defensive tackle Bobby Jamison-Travis.

There is at least a lot more depth on the defensive line than New York had a few weeks ago, but the lack of impact talent and reliance on rotational-level players makes it a glaring weakness on the Giants' defense. Given that New York could give Reeder playing time, it's reasonable to think a deal could be done if the Giants are willing to meet his contract demands.
