newcastle united They are considering a contract for Werder Bremen goalkeeper Mio Backhaus this summer as his 'departure is looming.'
Bild Hamburg reports today on the 22-year-old goalkeeper As he nears the end of his first season as Werder Bremen's number one goalkeeper.
Newcastle United's interest is well known
The goalkeeper was one of the key players in securing the club's survival in the Bundesliga this season. But his first season could also be his last.
There are indications that he will leave the German club this summer. Werder Bremen want to generate revenue by June 30th To improve its financial results for the financial year.
There are two players on their radar for sale: Karim Coulibaly and Mio Backhaus. There will be talks over the defender in the coming weeks. And so, the focus is shifting towards selling the U21 international goalkeeper.
Newcastle United's interest in him has been confirmed. The belief is that they have the necessary funds to make the transfer. This will certainly be the case if Anthony Gordon is sold to Bayern Munich this summer.
They will potentially face competition from Freiburg following the departure of goalkeeper Noah Atubolu. If they can win the Europa League and offer Champions League football, it will make them more attractive than Newcastle.
€12m asking price
But this is a big deal at this time. Both parties are in the mix regardless, with Backhaus currently valued at around €12m. In modern terms, this is a bargain.
However, it doesn't look like the Magpies have made their move yet. They're probably waiting for the season to end and decide on a budget before moving forward.
But there is a perception the Magpies are hovering around a deal. And, crucially, Werder Bremen are ready to shift the conversation as they look to raise money and balance their books.
