everton Georgios Vagiannidis has been handed a clear path over the situation at Sporting, with Portuguese newspapers reporting that the Toffees have already made an inquiry about the right-back.
The 24-year-old is not guaranteed a place in the Sporting team for next season. This comes after a first campaign that never quite convinced the Portuguese champions.
Georgios Vagiannidis made 32 appearances in all competitions last season, including 22 in Liga Portugal. In the league, he provided four assists in 864 minutes.
Those figures showed there was involvement, but Sporting clearly expected more after the big investment.
everton angle emerges
to ball Everton and Villarreal are both keeping tabs on the Greece international. Both clubs had already followed him before his move from Panathinaikos to Sporting.
Sporting paid €12.5m (£10.6m) to €13m (£11m) for Georgios Vagiannidis last summer. Now, if they can recover that investment they are willing to let him go.
Vagiannidis has made it clear that he would like to remain at Sporting and prove himself. However, that desire may not be enough.
A Bola also reports that no official proposal has yet reached Alvalade. Nevertheless, Everton and Villarreal have asked about the terms of the deal.
A return to Greece has already been rejected by the player. He either wants to succeed in sporting or try his luck in a more competitive league.
The loan is now on the table
Georgios Vagiannidis could also be ruled out of next season. In a recent reportA Bola says the scenario is being discussed within Sporting.
The idea would be to give him more regular minutes and allow him to return more mature. Sporting still believe he has the qualities to develop.
However, the picture on the right is getting crowded. Ivan Fresneda is currently first choice, although there is also interest from England.
Fresneda's late-season injury may have hindered his exit, as he missed the final nine games. Young Salvador Blopa is also expected to be a consistent part of the team next season.
This means Sporting is open to solutions. The player has rejected Greece, and there was already interest from England before his move to Portugal.
This gives Everton a potential opening, especially if Sporting decide a loan or sale is the cleanest way to move forward.
