Real Union is owned by Unai Emery and his family, who purchased the Spanish club in 2021. The Basque club, a founding member of La Liga, is deeply linked to the Emery family, with the Aston Villa manager's father and grandfather also playing for them.
The Premier League club and their owners V Sports announced an associate partnership with them in 2023.
The pair have worked together since then and continue to do so. El Diario Vasco reports that Bengoa and Igor Emery were in Birmingham last week. He first watched the second leg of the Europa League semi-finals.
But the trip had other motivations. They also took a look behind the scenes at Villa Park and discussed a possible transfer between the two clubs.
"We took the opportunity to see some of the work being done to prepare for the final stage of the season. But above all, to compare the possibilities for next season and prepare ourselves in the best way to be as competitive as possible." Bengoa explained.
Aston Villa's youngsters are shining
The Spanish side were recently promoted from the Spanish fourth tier. According to Bengoa, this presents an interesting aspect for Aston Villa next season.
He has loaned several youngsters to Real Union in recent years. And Bengoa is eager to continue moving forward.
"For them, the Primera RFEF is a very interesting league for the development of their players," He added.
“There is no doubt that we will find common ground to help each other more easily than in Segunda RFEF.
"The club is extremely pleased with how the people who have come here have developed. There is a strong possibility of O'Reilly being sold this summer. Finney is developing in League One. Munro started in League Two. But in January, they sold him to a Championship team.
"James Wright has been the third-choice goalkeeper for the first team throughout the season. He is pleased with his good performances on a daily basis. He assesses that his time at Irun has given him experience which will make him stronger when he returns to English football."
