“It’s an open search … we have a very open mind,” Ujiri said. “We’re going to look everywhere. Try everything possible, and we’ll really see what’s best for this organization. First-time, veteran, college, European, everywhere. Whatever is best for this organization going forward.”

Could the Mavericks target Dusty Mays or Todd Golden?

The assumption may be that Ujiri would prefer an experienced NBA head coach or top assistant in the league. However, he’s apparently open to all options, and that could include Florida’s Todd Golden and Michigan’s Dusty May.

Is there a possibility of going to the NBA? No, but it should not be dismissed. Especially when both have national championships in their resumes. What else is left to prove?

The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Timothy Liljegren to a two-year, $6.5 million contract extension. Liljegren’s deal has an average annual value of $3.25 million.

The Capitals acquired Liljegren from the San Jose Sharks at the 2026 NHL trade deadline in March. The 27-year-old blueliner finished the season with 11 points (1 goal, 10 assists) in 47 games for both teams.

The Capitals still have to address their right side with Liljegren’s return. It appears Sunny Mehta has gone through his process of identifying the New Jersey Devils’ weaknesses, and he has broken up with the dead weight.

Thus, Devils GM fired Dave Rogalski on Tuesday and is rehiring Sergei Brylin within the organization. He will not be in a coaching capacity.

Sheldon Keefe will remain as head coach of the Devils, and Keefe hired Brad Shaw and Jeremy Colliton to remain as his assistants.

However, the Devils need to replace Braylin behind the bench and hire Rogalski – widely known as the Martin Brodeur hire – as a goaltending coach.

Leo Luongo, younger brother of Hall-of-Fame goaltender Roberto Luongo, has played two NHL roles with the Florida Panthers. He was previously their goaltending development coach in 2020-21 – where he helped Sergei Bobrovsky have a strong year and helped Chris Dreigger turn in a stellar performance. He then graduated to Director of Player Development, and is now Director of Goaltending for Florida’s AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.

Luongo is a member of a first-of-its-kind goaltending excellence department in Florida that has helped develop netminders such as Dreigger, Joey Daccord and Spencer Knight.

Part of Luongo’s responsibility as Director of Goaltending is to streamline the structure between Florida and Charlotte so that NHL and AHL goaltenders can receive similar development and mentorship.

In fact, he has been a key part of Florida’s organization that has helped Luongo and Florida win two Stanley Cups.

This would certainly bode well for NHL goaltenders and developing netminders like Mikhail Yegorov and Jakub Malek.

Luongo could also help develop his own goaltending excellence department in New Jersey and ultimately end the revolving door of weak goaltenders in the Devils organization.

Hannu Toivonen-Toronto Marlies

If we’re looking for a goaltending coach to match Keefe, look no further than Hannu Toivonen, who overlapped with Keefe for three seasons in the Toronto organization.

Former pro goaltender turned goalie coach Toivonen has been labeled the Toronto Marlies goaltending guru after helping bring Ilya Samsonov back to NHL standard and successfully develop Dennis Hildeby early in his career.

With Samsonov in particular, Toivunen’s task was to get him back on track as a goaltender after taking a leave of absence for a “physical and mental reset”.

Toivonen’s role in Samsonov’s resurgence when he returned on January 14 after a 10-day reset was instrumental in his return to the Maple Leafs on the tail end of the 2023–2024 season. Samsonov posted a well below average .862 SV$ and 3.94 GAA in his first 15 games. He was assigned to the AHL Marlies to work on himself, and Samsonov received dedicated one-on-one mentoring from Toivonen.

Through focused sessions on the ice and support from the team’s development and performance staff, Toivonen helped Samsonov rebuild his confidence, refine his technique, and restore his mental intensity. The results were shocking. Upon his return, Samsonov delivered a much-improved .904 SV% and 2.70 GAA over his final 25 games, demonstrating the profound impact of Toivonen’s guidance in helping the Russian netminder regain his form and stabilize the Maple Leafs’ crease.

Now, it appears Toivonen is grooming another young goaltender in Toronto, named Artur Akhtyamov, who finished his first season as the starting goaltender for the Marlies with a 2.88 GAA and .904 SV% in 37 games. Akhtiyamov carried his strong regular season performance into the postseason where he has posted a 2.25 GAA and .916 SV% in eight games so far.

A source told New Jersey Hockey Now that Toivonen is “deserving of a promotion” and would be an excellent choice to take over the Devils’ vacant position.

Curtis Sanford-Toronto Maple Leafs

It seems more like the Devils could take Toivonen from Toronto rather than displace Curtis Sanford, who is already the goaltending coach in Toronto.

However, the Maple Leafs are going through changes of their own, and the arrival of a new head coach does not guarantee Sanford will remain in his position.

Sanford is a former NHL goaltender turned coach who has spent his coaching career in the Maple Leafs, Utica Comets and Abbotsford Canucks organizations.

As of mid-May 2026, the road to NASCAR’s 2027 Silly Season is oddly quiet but already feels unusually crowded. There are over 20 Cup Series drivers going into contract years, and that alone is enough to get rumors flying long before anything is officially finalized.

Add in some volatile veteran situations, some fast-rising young drivers and ongoing charter pressure in the paddock, and we’ve got the early signs of a market that could change rapidly after the first dominoes fall. But in reality things are moving surprisingly slowly.

Kyle Busch remains the dominant domino in the field

At the center of it all is Kyle Busch and his situation with Richard Childress Racing. For months, there was real noise about a possible split. That chatter still hasn’t completely disappeared, but the atmosphere around the garage has changed. Industry reports indicate that despite the disappointing win, Kyle Busch should extend his contract to remain at RCR. Both sides have realized that there are few, if any, better options.

Still, nothing stays simple for long in NASCAR. If talks fail, Spire Motorsports continues to loom as the most logical alternative landing spot.

That scenario will rapidly ripple outward. One name often mentioned in that conversation was Daniel Suarez, who suddenly found himself under more pressure depending on performance.

And then there’s Jesse Love, a driver many see as already waiting for his Cup opportunity. If a seat opens up in RCR, he joins that conversation.

Bowman’s future at Hendricks unclear

Alex Bowman at Hendrick Motorsports is another position to watch. Nothing is changing officially yet, but the pressure is on. Bowman is approaching the end of his current deal through 2026, and Hendricks’ pipeline continues to get stronger year over year.

Names like Connor Zylisch and Corey Day are no longer just “future prospects” in the abstract, but they are actually real internal options.

RFK Racing and Charter Pressure Point

Then there’s RFK Racing, where the situation is more structural than driver-centric.

The team, co-owned by Brad Keselowski, is currently operating with two guaranteed charters. The third entry involving Ryan Preece was previously linked to a lease arrangement with Rick Ware Racing, but that charter has now reportedly been sold to Legacy for 2027.

This leaves RFK in a tricky position. Without another acquisition, they risk running a non-chartered car, which impacts everything from revenue to race access stability.

Depending on how things turn out, it could ultimately affect the futures of Keselowski, Chris Buescher and Preece.

When it comes to shot-share battles, expect the Hurricane to reign supreme.

On the other side of the coin, the Canadians enjoyed better goaltending in both regular save percentage and high-danger save percentage. They also had more skilled shooters, including higher quality shooting opportunities.

While the Hurricanes put more rubber on net, the Habs are much better at stopping said rubber, not to mention when it comes to capitalizing on their own scoring opportunities.

It’s a battle of quantity versus quality, with the Hurricanes requiring an incredibly high volume of shots to generate most of their attack.

When we boil things down to their ability to score and prevent goals their results are quite similar.

The Habs score more often at 5v5, but the Hurricanes are still among the top 10 teams, while the Canes are better at preventing the puck from entering their net, but not by much.

Carolina and Montreal faced off on three occasions in the regular season. All three games ended with victories for the Canadiens, although they were certainly high-event match-ups.

The Canadiens defeated the Hurricanes 7–5 on January 1, before winning two games in late March.

Overall, they outshot the Hurricanes 12-3, giving them an 80% lead in goals scored at 5v5.

That means it should be a walk in the park for hubs, right?

Absolutely not!

Statistically speaking, the Canadiens were incredibly lucky to emerge from their three games against the Hurricanes with a point, let alone three wins.

This doesn’t mean that Carolina will completely dominate the Habs at 5v5 in the upcoming series, but we shouldn’t fool ourselves into thinking that Montreal will be the favorite team due to the regular season results.

Most analysts will pick the Hurricanes to win the Eastern Conference Finals, and there is enough data to suggest that this is a very logical decision.

However, we have yet to see what impact the nearly two weeks off between playoff series will have. The Hurricanes are cold as ice, while the Canadiens have been playing essentially every two days since the playoffs began.

It is also important to remember that the Canadiens faced a lot of quality competition in the playoffs, as the Sabers and Tampa Bay Lightning were among the best teams in the Eastern Conference, while the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers were not.

If I were a betting man, my money would be on the Hurricanes, but I’d be very eager to support the Canadiens, given their tendency to rise to the challenge when faced with adversity.
