The Charlotte Hornets turned Tuesday night against the Miami Heat into a personal playground for LaMelo Ball. While Charlotte walked away with an impressive 136-106 win, the post-game conversation wasn’t about the lopsided score, it was about how on earth Ball keeps making the impossible seem routine.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Ball went through the middle of the defense, took a heavy hit from a defender and somehow put the ball in the hoop while falling. When asked about the secret behind his highlight-reel finishing, Ball kept it refreshingly simple. He credited his coach and the unconventional reps he did behind the scenes.

“I mean, me and my guy March have been working on it, so I think I’ve been working on all my shots,” Ball said after the win. When a reporter pressed him on whether he specifically practiced falling shots because of how “pretty” they look, he didn’t even blink. “Yeah, to be honest, I work on all my shots.”

That preparation was on full display as the Hornets were missing star center Bam Adebayo from the Heat squad. Ball finished the night with a spectacular triple-double, scoring 30 points and 13 assists with six rebounds. He remained efficient throughout the field, making 11 of 22 shots from the field and missing four of his 12 attempts from beyond the arc.

Without Adebayo to bolster the interior, Charlotte celebrated a turnaround, powered entirely by Ball’s elite vision and pace. The Hornets effectively closed out the contest with a huge surge in the second half, leaving Miami with no answers. For a team looking to finish 2026 strong, Ball’s magic is looking like a science.

On Tuesday night, the Orlando Magic had a golden opportunity to test themselves against the toughest imaginable opponent in today’s NBA – the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder. However, Carter did not play 48 minutes. Unfortunately, the Magic had to play their bench that night, which did not perform well at all against the Thunder. Somehow, in just 13 minutes of play, Carter’s backup Mo Wagner was minus 28 in a five-point loss to the Thunder, 113-108.

To put it mildly, the Magic bench did not play well at all and a large portion of the blame for his team losing the game during his minutes should fall on his shoulders. And after the game, head coach Jamahl Mosley was not at all happy with his bench team, as evidenced by his answer when asked how tough their night was.

“You see it,” Mosley said, according to Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel.

The advantage is that come playoff time, the bench doesn’t have to play as much. But Mosley losing confidence in some of his bench players is not promising for the team’s progress for the remainder of the season.

Magical confidence in Franz Wagner’s eventual return from injury

Young Wagner’s eventual return from an ankle injury will help the Magic. Additionally, the team is missing Anthony Black, forcing Tristan da Silva to start – further thinning the team’s bench core.

There is only less than a month until the playoffs start, so the Magic should have time to better configure their rotation after their bench hampered them in their loss to the Thunder.

Brunson missed the game with an ankle injury and a neck strain. He had not missed a competition since January.

Before tip-off, Alvarado was introduced as being from Christ the King High School. Players are usually introduced to their alma mater in college. When SNY asked about this, they told a slight change felt appropriate.

The 27-year-old guard played four years at Georgia Tech, earning two All-ACC team honors and winning the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award in 2021.

Alvarado has been a solid midseason pick-up for the Knicks, providing instant energy, defensive intensity and shooting off the bench. In 18 games, he has averaged 6.2 points, 4.0 assists and 1.1 steals in 17.0 minutes.

He’s a perfect fit for the Knicks’ culture, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he earns a bigger role in the playoffs.

The Pistons have been on top of the East for most of the season, but they have some ways to go before they can convince most fans that they are the team to beat in the conference.

The Boston Celtics recently got Jayson Tatum back, the New York Knicks have some battle-tested veteran stars, and the Cleveland Cavaliers will now be eager to get a big win. But the Pistons have shrugged off fans’ skepticism in the past, and perhaps flying under the radar in a playoff setting will do wonders for their competitive psyche.

In the Carolina Hurricanes’ 67th game of the season, they suffered a blowout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, defeating them 5–1 in the first half of the Hurricanes’ back-to-back Metropolitan Division sets. Nicolas Deslauriers dropped the gloves with Mathieu Ollivier, Seth Jarvis was a blood-thirsty threat who couldn’t stay out of the box, Jakob Slavin ate a puck, and I’m still confused over the decision to allow a goal that was clear goaltender interference… just wait until you hear what the refs told Rod Brind’Amour about it.

The Hurricanes came out of the gate strong on Tuesday evening, but when Jarvis took a double minor to high-sticking Zach Werenski before five minutes were played, the momentum quickly shifted in the Blue Jackets’ direction. The wildest part, this wasn’t even the only double minor for a stick violation by Jarvis, as he did the same to Connor Garland later in the third period, albeit…a little worse. Garland went down the tunnel, leaving behind the red color of the snow.

He has already accumulated 13 penalty minutes since ending his ‘good guy streak’ in the last game.

By the time the second period started, the Blue Jackets were already ahead by two goals, and the Hurricanes were having nothing for them. And so, in classic Enforcer fashion, DesLauriers got down to business at the start of his storm as he dropped the gloves with the Blue Jacket’s famous bruiser. As usual, after the fight, he would definitely give Olivier a helmet tap – his signature show of respect.

He did his job well, giving Carolina enough spark to score Andrei Svechnikov and cut Columbus’ lead in half. However, the Hurricanes could only do so much in the scoring department.

Just refs talking refs stuff

With just over two and a half minutes remaining in the second frame, one of the most confusing events in recent sports occurred. Brandon Bussey was behind the net intent on clearing the puck when Danton Heinen came speeding up, and without thinking pushed his right skate into the back of the goaltender’s left skate, causing him to slip. Alexander Nikishin managed to block Charlie Coyle’s shot on the empty net, but Heinen came up and dumped the loose puck in, while Bussey attempted to jump in front and intercept it from next to the crease.

This was one of the clearest examples of goaltender interference – a penalty in the worst case, and a goal disallowed in the best case.

Rod Brind’Amour was unhappy when the call was not made and told the referee everything. Later, he spoke to FanDuel Sports Network’s rinkside reporter Hannah Yates about the incident, explaining that the referee had told him Bussey had dived.

Given Henen’s speed and movement and Bussey’s reaction, I’m honestly not sure how they came to this conclusion. Additionally, it is very easy for goalies to fall after making contact with the skate due to the boot being much shorter than a standard skater’s boot (which comes well above the ankle), thus providing significantly less support.

Alas, the goal stood and play continued.

In the third frame, Slavin was caught defending a two-on-one situation, going down to the ice to block a shot. Sadly, that obstacle was due to her face. Bleeding, he walked to the bench to get help and was able to stay in the game.

The Hurricanes travel to Lenovo Center on Wednesday night to face the Pittsburgh Penguins, who will have Evgeni Malkin back in the lineup.

One name that every Bucks fan should write down on their bracket is Nate Ament out of Tennessee. After a rough start to his college career, Ament has absolutely exploded over the last two months of the season. He is adept at navigating in space and has developed a bad habit of making contacts. His staggering 7.5 free throw attempts per game recently prove this point.

For Milwaukee, Ament’s ability to stretch the floor and make timely cuts will be a godsend. His three-point percentage is also up. Additionally, his size will allow the Bucks to play big without compromising speed or shooting.

Kingston Flemings, Houston

If the Bucks are looking for a player who can turn a defensive stop into a fast-break highlight in the blink of an eye, Houston’s Kingston Flemings is that guy. Flemings is considered one of the fastest and most explosive athletes in this draft class. He’s a north-south blur who finishes above the rim with terrific authority. Playing under Kelvin Sampson, he has been molded into a defensive-first culture. That should make him a plug-and-play fit for a Milwaukee system that needs to rediscover its seriousness.

Flemings isn’t just a dunker either. Rather, he is a mid-range specialist who can also hit the long ball when the defense is weak. His ability to navigate passing lanes and stick to his man on the ball will provide an immediate upgrade to the Bucks’ perimeter defense.

Darrin Peterson, Kansas

Finally, we have to talk about Kansas’ Darin Peterson. The 6-6 scoring machine entered the year as the consensus number one overall prospect. Yes, his stock has fluctuated due to health concerns and Kansas’ late-season struggles. Still, his ceiling is as high as anyone else in the class. Peterson is perhaps the most polished offensive prospect to reach the college ranks in years. He simply has a scoring arsenal that allows him to get buckets from anywhere on the floor.

For a Bucks team that ranks 28th in scoring, adding a weapon like Peterson would be like adding high-octane fuel to a sputtering engine. There have been whispers about his intensity. However, there’s no better place to silence the critics than the NCAA Tournament. If Peterson puts in a dominant performance and shows that “Mamba mentality” scouts are looking for, he becomes the ultimate prize for a team like Milwaukee.

The Indiana Pacers may have just etched their name in the franchise record books, but it’s certainly not a reason anyone in Indianapolis wants to celebrate. On Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, the New York Knicks handed the Pacers a 136–110 loss, Indiana’s 14th consecutive loss. This disappointing stretch officially sets a new franchise record for the longest losing streak in Pacers history, surpassing the mark held since the late 1980s.

It has been a tough journey for head coach Rick Carlisle and his team, who remain the only team in the NBA without a win since the All-Star break. The absence of superstar guard Tyrese Haliburton, who is out for the season with a torn Achilles, has left a huge void that the roster can’t easily fill. Without their primary playmaker, the Pacers’ offense looked disjointed and tired, a trend that continued against a surging Knicks team.

Even with the Knicks missing star point guard Jalen Brunson due to an ankle injury, the home team’s depth was too much to handle. Karl-Anthony Towns dominated the interior, while Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby provided consistent pressure on the wings. New York jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, taking advantage of an Indiana defense that has struggled to make stops during this historic slide.

Jarace Walker tried to keep things competitive for the Pacers, but the lack of veteran support, coupled with Pascal Siakam’s knee problem, made it an uphill battle from the starting point. As the final buzzer sounded in New York, the reality of the 15-54 record began to set in. While the team is clearly in evaluation mode, falling into such a historic rut is a tough pill to swallow for fans. Indiana will head home the next day, looking for any way to stop the bleeding before this record grows even longer.

When the Carolina Hurricanes acquired Nicolas Deslauriers, everyone knew he was going to take a beating in his first few games. But, I don’t think many people expected him to fight before he even played his first match.

I highly doubt anyone doubted that the fight would be against a promoter with an equally renowned resume like Mathieu Ollivier. However, when Deslauriers skated past Ollivier during warmups and exchanged a few brief words, it appeared there might be a dust-up.

With the game almost halfway through, the Hurricanes were lifeless and needed a spark, and Deslauriers provided just that.

The clock stopped with 10:22 remaining in the second period as the gloves hit the cold, hard ice in the neutral zone. Deslauriers and Ollivier sized each other up, slowly approaching each other, before Deslauriers made the first swipe, followed by a punch.

From there, fists started flying – exchanging haymakers and yanking each other’s sweaters. Amid the melee, a punch from Hurricane’s enforcer left Olivier’s jaw bloodied, however, the bleeding appeared to be caused by Deslauriers’ broken knuckles.

For Deslauriers, it was the 137th fight of his career, and for Olivier, the 112th. Both held their positions well, and ultimately, neither won nor lost in terms of the war.

However, the spark it provided certainly gave the Hurricanes a momentary advantage, as Andrei Svechnikov scored Carolina’s first, and sadly only, goal of the game before Deslauriers stepped out of the penalty box.

Discussion about dust-up

At the second intermission, Svechnikov was tapped for an interview, where he took some time to share his reaction to Deslauriers’ contributions.

“It feels good, to be honest,” he said. “You know, we haven’t had that in a while, but it feels good. …Yeah, big respect to them.”

After the game, Deslauriers was asked about the fight.

“This is what I live for, you know,” Deslauriers told the media. “I wish I could have scored a goal, but for me these are the moments when, you know, I feel I did something good.

“When you’re in the box – I know sometimes I stay there for a long time – but when we score, and I’m there after my work, I’m as happy as if I’d scored a goal.”

Habs fans will be quick to tell you that the team has not received favorable officiating this season, and there is some truth to that theory, but the fact that the Canadiens have struggled to show any shred of discipline this year has compounded the problem considerably.

Alexander Carrier’s double-minor to start the game against the Bruins was a perfect example. This left the Canadiens behind by the eight ball, as the Bruins scored quickly during the first power play.

Despite the inconsistency involved in NHL officiating, the Canadiens need to do a much better job when it comes to avoiding needless penalties. For the most part, they are the authors of their own penalty problems.

The first line didn’t get a chance to play 5v5 shifts for about five minutes, another symptom of there being no discipline at all in the team.

Luckily for the Canadians, Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkowski made their mark early on and tied the game midway through the first period. It was Suzuki’s 24th goal of the season, although we must give credit to Caufield for his excellent work on the blue line, keeping the game alive after a few fortuitous layups.

coverage issues

Boston took a 2-1 lead midway through the second period, and while many will look for the skater to make the mistake, the truth is that Montreal’s poor defensive coverage is incredibly common. At some point, you have to view the system as the cause of an endless stream of defensive failures.

For the record, it was Oliver Kapanen who was covering Zacha, and then proceeded to drop him at the last minute, but again, this is a recurring theme for the Habs. Whether it’s Kapanen or another Canadiens player, questionable defensive coverage happens all too often for a team that is in a very competitive playoff race.

With the Canadiens trailing once again, the veteran line provided a crucial goal, as Josh Anderson tied the game at 2–2 with a point shot.

Full marks to Anderson for creating enough of a gap between himself and the much bigger Nikita Zadorov. It was exactly the kind of play you’d expect to see from a rough-and-tumble player like Anderson, who scored his 13th goal of the season.

It should also be noted that Jaden Struble did a great job keeping the game alive, leading to the Lane Hutson shot and of course the Anderson tip. Brendan Gallagher, appearing in his 900th NHL game, also recorded an assist in the scoring game.

The teams remained tied at 2 at the second intermission, however, the Canadiens maintained a clear edge in high-danger chances at 5v5 at 14–7.

Based on the Lakers’ depth chart, there doesn’t appear to be much room in the rotation for the second-year guard. It always made sense that he was going to get more opportunities to develop his game in the G League.

As Bronny James juggles the shuffle between the Lakers and South Bay, one of the things he’s working on is trying to find a balance between finding his shot and being a playmaker for his teammates. At the urging of both Lakers head coach JJ Redick and South Bay head coach Zach Guthrie, James has focused on finding his shot when the opportunity arises.

“They always tell me they want me to be as aggressive as possible and try to score,” James told ClutchPoints in an exclusive interview. “That’s been my mentality all the time now. If they give it to me, I’ll take a bucket. If not, just put it back in space and make a play. Not really thinking too much and just playing basketball.”

This work is in progress. As a point guard, James has a natural penchant for moving the ball and getting his teammates involved. Last year, he averaged 4.6 assists per game while in the G League. This season, he has slightly less than four assists. During his first two games with South Bay, he posted back-to-back games of eight assists.

This was followed by a streak of seven games where he averaged 5.3 assists per game. With the Lakers, James has had two games with six assists this season. He walks a good path for all players trying to become a successful guard in the NBA. It’s all about finding your shot, and finding the right balance between keeping the offense humming and getting scoring opportunities to your teammates.

“I think it’s just staying aggressive. I’m looking for my shot first and if the defender comes in front of me, I make the pass,” James said. “Just play your game and experience the defense while the game is going on.”

While opportunities with the Lakers are few and far between, there is ample playing time available for James in the G League. By mid-March, he had appeared in 18 games with South Bay, equal to his total appearances from the previous season.

His average has been 13.3 points, which is less than 18.6 points a year ago. Their total number has decreased slightly; 3.0 rebounds compared to 4.4 and 3.8 assists compared to 4.6. But their efficiency has improved. James is shooting 48.7 percent from the field, up from 41.9 percent last year. And his 3-point efficiency has gone from 33.6 percent to 34.4 percent.

It’s a balanced approach for James, which is a byproduct of the game being slow for him, as well as playing with a talented South Bay team.

One way James’ time with South Bay has helped his development is the chance to play with his ‘be ready’ Lakers teammates in live game action. He has suited up with Edou Thirou, Dalton Knecht, Kobe Bufkin, Drew Timme, Chris Mannon and Nick Smith Jr. This group often scrimmages against each other in ‘Be Ready’ games after Lakers practice.

This is a group that doesn’t often see the court on a regular basis in the NBA, but playing together with South Bay gives them an opportunity to build togetherness and implement what the Lakers’ coaching staff wants to see from their development.

“I like to get my teammates involved because they’re all really talented and they can get buckets,” James said. “So I don’t have to be the only one trying to score the whole game. It’s definitely an easier job when I’m playing with them.”

Bronny James’ outlook on the rest of the season

While the Lakers certainly aspire to make a strong showing in the NBA playoffs, South Bay has emerged as a contender itself once the G League postseason begins. They recently set a franchise record of 12 consecutive wins, and they hold sole possession of first place in the G League’s Western Conference standings.

James is likely to play a much bigger role in South Bay’s postseason run than the Lakers, provided he is deployed when the G League playoffs begin at the end of the month. He’s already looking forward to a possible partnership with the group.

“We’re ranked No. 1 in the Western Conference right now,” James said. “We’re on a winning streak, and I think we can go very far in the playoffs. Do whatever it takes to win. I think it’s good for my development.”

The G League Finals are set to conclude just before the NBA Playoffs begin. Should South Bay get that far, it’s probably safe to assume James will be on the roster. And then he’ll be back in time for a potential playoff run with the Lakers.

And no matter which team he is with, he will bring his same winning mentality.

“I think it’s just coming out and doing whatever the coach needs. If I came back to the Lakers, it would be the same thing,” James said. “Just playing a role and excelling at it. I have different roles on both of my teams, so whatever it is, just doing it at a high level.”

I saw a lot of votes going the other way.”

Wembanyama returned to the Spurs lineup this season after playing only 46 games in the 2024–2025 season due to deep vein thrombosis. He made one appearance earlier this season in his third year in the league, but was slightly derailed by a calf strain. After being out for a few weeks, he returned in time for the in-season tournament and Christmas Day games versus the Oklahoma City Thunder, but the Spurs coaching staff moved him off the bench out of an abundance of caution. Instead, Luke Cornet began managing Vembanyama’s minutes following the injury.

The Spurs were actually able to remain competitive in the Western Conference without Wembanyama, posting a 10–5 record in 15 games without him this season. Kornet certainly played a role, averaging 6.7 points and 6.2 rebounds on 65% from the floor.
