The Lakers haven’t always done a good job of following that quote, but Rui Hachimura believes they have gotten better in recent games.

The Lakers dominated from start to finish in consecutive wins against the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings, respectively. A big part of those wins depended on the Lakers coming out on top early and asserting their will in terms of physicality. This includes playing tough defense, diving after loose balls, hitting hard on the glass and other little things that don’t always show up with statistics.

“I think when we did that in the game today [against the Kings]game [against the Warriors]I think we have created the atmosphere. That’s why we were able to control the whole game,” Hachimura said after the win against the Kings. “So I think things like that, we have to keep doing it. I think sometimes we do it and then we stop doing it. So we just have to keep doing it. We’ve got to make those plays and those little things. We have to keep building.”

Hachimura returned to the Lakers’ lineup against the Kings after a brief two-game absence due to illness. His game was somewhat solid, finishing with eight points while shooting 2-4 from the 3-point line in a little over 22 minutes.

He has been coming off the bench since returning from a calf injury in mid-January. Hachimura has appeared in 48 games, including 31 starts, averaging a little over 29 minutes per game. He averaged 11.7 points and 3.4 rebounds with splits of 50.1 percent shooting from the field, 44.1 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 74.5 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

But the Lakers’ overall toughness and physicality starts with smarts. He often sets the tone on the defensive end of the court, and is a big reason why head coach JJ Redick has opted to stick with Smart in the starting lineup following Hachimura’s return.

After the win against the Kings, Redick made sure to single out Smart for his impact on the game.

“I told the team afterward, I thought Smart’s defense … completely blew us away at different points in the game,” Redick said. “He finished with five steals, but he’s diving down the floor for loose balls. He’s starting the transition game for us. He switches to the five, sets him up perfectly. … He was another igniter for us.”

The 2025-26 Vegas Golden Knights have been remarkably consistent. Unfortunately, they are consistent in all the wrong ways – they have a tendency to start playing well only after falling behind by two or more goals. They have managed to save points from many of those attempts, but that is hardly a recipe for success.

It happened again Tuesday when the Golden Knights faced the Buffalo Sabers at KeyBank Center. The Sabers took a 3-0 lead early in the second period before the Golden Knights responded. He performed exceptionally well in just under 35 minutes of play, but it was not enough and the Sabers won 3–2.

“It’s very tough to be down by that many goals and come back to win the game,” Colton Sissons said after the game. “We’re constantly looking for ways to make it interesting, but now it’s too late.”

The Sabers opened the scoring just 4:02 into the first period. Ryan McLeod tried to find Jack Quinn for a back-door tap-in, but his pass went off the skate of Jack Eichel. The puck bounced straight to Jason Zucker at the goal line, and the Las Vegas native tapped it home.

The Sabers doubled their lead just 46 seconds into the second period. Noah Ostlund won in the offensive zone in front of Owen Power, who walked to the line and fired a shot on goal from distance. Rasmus Andersson partially screened Akira Schmidt, and Power’s shot went off Andersson’s glove and into the net.

The Sabers extended their lead at 5:44 of the second minute. Alex Tuch flew into the offensive zone and threw a pass to Taj Thompson. Thompson stepped into the right circle and beat Akira Schmidt with a wrist shot from distance.

That’s when everything changed, and the Golden Knights responded just 1:06 later. Jack Eichel set up Shea Theodore for a one-timer, but the shot went wide. Alex Lyon denied Ivan Barbashev’s pass attempt, so Barbashev buried it home on a wraparound.

At 8:27 in the second minute, the Golden Knights tied it at one goal. Reilly Smith forced a turnover and knocked the puck out of the zone, and Pavel Dorofeyev advanced to first. Dorofeyev raced up the ice, protected the puck and beat Alex Lyon for the five-hole.

Despite trailing by only one goal, the Golden Knights struggled to generate offense in the third period. He failed to move forward this time and looked disinterested while doing so. Apart from hitting a few crossbars, they managed only six shots on goal in the final frame and lost 3–2.

Three Golden Night Takeaway

1. Credit is due: Alex Lyon played very well in net for the Sabers tonight. He saved 27 of 29 shots and finished the night with a .931 SV% and 1.85 GSAX. That being said, the Golden Knights didn’t do enough to make life difficult for him. He challenged them only six times in the third period. This is often not going to result in a win – especially when they are trying to make a comeback.

2. The Golden Knights are faltering; With a 3-6-2 record in their last 11 games, they are in serious danger of losing control of the Pacific Division. Of course, their biggest issue is their slow start. Sure, they made it competitive tonight. Big noise. Moral victory means little early on, and even less at this time of year when points are at a premium.

Chasing leads is exhausting, and the Golden Knights have made a habit of it. In 61 games played, he has spent 1502:48 of time at the back, fourth most in the league. The fact that they are still leading the Pacific Division says more about the state of the division than the quality of their play.

“We’ve been down this road before,” head coach Bruce Cassidy said after the 3-2 loss. “We get held back, kind of punched in the face. Then we get on our game — we’re talking about trying to get there before that happens, a lot.”

The NBA decided to move back completely to Tuesday night’s broadcast of the San Antonio Spurs and Philadelphia 76ers clash. The 76ers were missing Joel Embiid and Paul George in Tuesday night’s contest against the Spurs, and they also lost VJ Edgecombe to an injury during the game. “You take away all the threats around him and it becomes really frustrating for him and our team. It makes things really difficult in terms of rhythm and flow. He’s done a great job of doing the things we’ve been asking him to do. Less handling the ball at the top of the key. More screening and diving into ball screens. Running the floor and getting to the corners instead of running the play back,” Kerr said on the Tom Tolbert Show. Said at the 28:34 mark.

“He’s doing all these things, everything we’re asking. He’s having a great attitude on the bench and in the locker room, but he’s frustrated. All the frustration that comes with getting older and not being able to do things you could do a few years ago. It’s all playing into it and he’s handling it really, really well.”

A true success story of perseverance, Edgecombe came from a home in the Bahamas that used a generator to produce electricity to being a consensus five-star recruit who played his college ball at Baylor, and ultimately being the third-overall selection in the 2025 NBA Draft, where he was selected by Morey over other options like Kon Knueppel and Ace Bailey.

Widely known as more of an athlete than a finished product coming into the NBA, Edgecombe looks quite polished as he prepares for his first trip to the NBA postseason, averaging 15.5 points, 3.9 assists and 5.6 rebounds a night, while playing really good defense and hitting 36.3 percent of his 5.8 3-pointers per game. If Edgecombe keeps this up, he will not only finish his rookie season with a spot on the All-Rookie team, but will also look forward to facing a star player like Wembley in the future.

Hosting the defending back-to-back champions, the Florida Panthers, New Jersey looked like themselves again in a 5–1 victory to start their seven-game homestand.

It was a slow start as the Panthers pressured Jacob Markstrom and maintained puck possession with five shots in the first three-plus minutes of the period.

However, the Devils tilted the ice back in their direction, opening the scoring on the stick of Arseniy Gritsyuk.

Connor Brown forced a turnover in the neutral zone as the Panthers attempted to transition to the Devils’ end of the ice.

20 seconds after the Devils scored, Carter Verhaeghe set up Jack in the corner behind the Devils’ net. Panthers forwards got two minutes for boarding, while Brendan Dillon and Eetu Luostarinen got two minutes for roughing.

Jack surfaced after the boarding incident and remained safe in the game.

Anton Lundell equalized the score at one just as Dillon and Luostarinen came out of their respective penalty boxes.

A physical, playful game continued in the second period, however, as the Devils quickly separated themselves from the Panthers on the scoreboard.

Jack received a pass from Jasper Bratt in the Florida slot but sent the puck wide of the Panther net. Still, Dougie Hamilton was in the right place at the right time, as the rubber bounced off the end board and landed right in front of him for an easy tap-in, giving the Devils a 2-1 lead 1:35 into the middle frame.

About halfway through the second period, Cody Glass widened the gap by redirecting Lenny Haminaho’s shot from the right point, scoring his 14th of the season to give New Jersey a 3–1 lead.

The third period proved that the ice was tilted in New Jersey’s favor. Bobrowski made 10 saves in the final 20 minutes to keep Florida from a two-goal deficit.

However, this did not prevent the Devils from maintaining the majority of puck possession.

Paul Morrissey pulled Bobrovsky with about three and a half minutes remaining in the game. Dawson Mercer forced a turnover in the neutral zone and scored on an empty net to increase the Devils’ lead to 4–1.

Simon Nemec added a second empty-net goal to solidify a 5–1 victory.

Markstrom recently had another strong performance, making 20 saves on 21 shots and earning his 17th win of the season.

New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson has opened up about the challenges of his career, specifically his numerous injuries and criticism regarding his weight.

While he is one of the best players in the NBA, Williamson has struggled to stay on the court due to health issues. In an interview with ESPN, he admitted that he was disappointed when he missed his third season due to a broken foot and that people blamed his weight.

Instead of expressing sympathy for the 25-year-old star who is struggling with an ankle injury, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith called him a “food addict.” He also claimed that the Pelicans “encouraged” him to talk to Williamson about his weight.

In response, Pelican posted a video of Smith’s popular bloopers on X, adding the caption, “Stick to solitaire, Stephen.” Bonus points for effortless alliteration.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are making their playoff push coming out of the All-Star break, and are trying to do so with Donovan Mitchell in and out of the lineup, as well as James Harden. The player fans have been eagerly waiting for is shooting guard Max Strus.

Strus has been out of the Cavs’ lineup the entire season as he recovers from offseason surgery on his left foot to repair a Jones fracture. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Cavs guard had surgery in August 2025 and was expected to return after three or four months.

But seven months later, Strus has still not returned to court. On Tuesday, the Cavs provided an injury update on Strus:

Cavaliers guard/forward Max Strus continues his recovery after offseason surgery to repair a Jones fracture in his left foot. Recent imaging has shown progressive healing, and in consultation with Dr. David Porter and team physician Dr. James Rosneck, Strus has made progress in individual on-court workouts as part of a structured ramp-up program.

“I feel like it doesn’t really represent what I know about myself and a lot of other N.B.A. [players] thought. So, I just want to make sure that part of the discussion is expressed. It comes with people like criticism and things like that – that’s part of the process as to why people are hesitant to do it, but I think really trying to start and enable conversation,” Cornet said during the Spurs shootaround on Tuesday.

“It’s important to help make sure that everyone in the league is willing to be represented, and there’s an environment that you want.”
