“At that time, it was all about going from one bar to the next and drinking as much beer as humanly possible,” Veron explained.

“So, I told them: ‘There it goes.’ Agustín came with Felipe Contepomi and I said: ‘I’ll take you guys on the bus.’

The night was supposed to be simple: drinks, laughter and a little Argentinian camaraderie in the middle of the English winter. But then the spark came.

Argentina’s response

At some point in the night, an unnamed man grabbed a microphone and shouted “England! England!” Started raising slogans loudly.

This prompted an immediate and strong reaction from Argentina.

“We took the mic away from him and started chanting for Argentina, and then the punches started,” Veron explained.

“It was a free for all, including the Irish, the Dutch, the English… and I’m not sure if Felipe took someone’s hat off or what actually happened,” he added laughing.

Now, of course, all this is in the past. With his partying days long behind him, the former midfielder can now laugh at such incidents.
