MLB umpire Brock Ballou was violently attacked and robbed in Center City Philadelphia on the evening of April 9, while he was in town to work the Phillies’ series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The veteran umpire was faced with the harsh reality of life in the city of brotherly love when a suspect approached him from behind in broad daylight.

According to Philadelphia police, a suspect approached Ballou from behind in the 1600 block of Walnut Street while the umpire was checking directions on his phone. The suspect snatched the device and ran away, with Ballou chasing him.

The confrontation quickly escalated into a physical altercation near 16th and Walnut, where surveillance video captured the suspect punching Ballou in the head multiple times.

During the struggle, both men fell to the ground. Police Capt. Jason Smith told CBS News Philadelphia that Ballou hit his head on the sidewalk, causing a concussion, as the suspect continued to attack with repeated violent punches.

“The suspect approached the subject and knocked his cellphone out of his hand,” Smith said. “The victim began chasing the male, at which time they became involved in a physical altercation at 16th and Walnut.”

“They fell on the ground, at which time the victim hit his head, causing injury,” he said. “The male continued his attack, punching her violently.”

Major League Baseball umpire Brock Ballou was among two victims allegedly robbed and assaulted in separate incidents in Center City last week, police sources say.

Ballou was punched repeatedly in the head during a street robbery, returned to the field the next night

Believe it or not, Ballou, who has been an MLB umpire since 2022, was not the first person to fall victim to an attacker that day. Within approximately 30 minutes the same suspect targeted another victim. Earlier that evening, the man allegedly stole items from the 7-Eleven on Chestnut Street and punched an employee who confronted him.

Despite the attack, Ballou’s injuries were not considered serious. And he is a very tough boy too. The next night he returned to the field to umpire a Phillies game.

Police have released surveillance photos of the suspect, described as a teenager wearing a black hat, black pants and a light blue hoodie, and are continuing to investigate robberies and assaults in the area.

Ballou’s toughness is admirable – he was umpiring at first base the next night, and returned behind the plate two days after the attack.

I’m not here to tell you that Tyree Wilson went seventh overall after being drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders. she has not. Through three years, a 57.6 PFF grade, and a pass-rush win rate that ranks 106th out of 126 edge rushers from 2023. These numbers don’t lie.

But I’m also not ready to put a bust label on him and move on. not yet.

Here’s the thing about Wilson that gets lost in the frustration: The Raiders are asking him to do something he was never meant to do. They have drafted him as a traditional 4-3 defensive end, a wide-9 speed rusher who wins off the edge with bends and athleticism. That’s not his game. It never was.

Wilson is 6 feet 6 inches, 263 pounds. He is a power player. Length and leverage are his tools, not ankle flexibility and cornerback speed. And for three years, three different coaching staffs have tried to fit that square peg into a round hole.

Rob Leonard’s 3-4 could eventually change that.

No one is talking about this plan

When Clint Kubiak announced at the combine that the Raiders were shifting to a 3-4 base under Leonard, much of the conversation focused on Maxx Crosby. Exactly – Crosby is the best player on defense. But the more interesting subplot is what this means for Tyree Wilson.

In Leonard’s system, Wilson projects as a 4-technique or 5-technique. This means he is hitting the inside with the tackle’s shoulder, using his length to control the gap and using his strength to collapse the pocket from the inside. That’s a completely different question than what he’s doing.

Think about it. Wilson’s struggles came when he was asked to win in space, turning the corner against NFL tackles who could mirror his running. Inside? The space shrinks. The game slows down. His height becomes an advantage rather than something he tries to compensate for.

Leonard coached Wilson as D-line coach the past two seasons. He knows exactly what Wilson can and can’t do. The change in plans is not accidental.

Tyree Wilson’s numbers behind the disappointment

Wilson’s 2025 wasn’t a complete disaster. He recorded career highs in tackles (35) and tackles for loss (8). He forced two to falter. He generated 35 pressures.

But the termination rate killed him. Wilson had 10 tackles missed, which was also a career high. 60.4 pass-rush grade which ranks 77th among qualified edge defenders. There were glimpses, but there was no stability.

The season finale against Kansas City provided a glimpse of what could be. Two sacks, two forced fumbles, eight pressures, 31.2% win rate. Granted, he was going against a backup tackle. But you can only beat who is in front of you and Wilson dominated that fight as he rarely has in his career.

The question is whether it was a preview or an external one.

The 5-year option has almost certainly expired

The Raiders have until May 1 to make a decision on Wilson’s 5th-year option. It will cost approximately $13 million.

They are not picking it up. I would be stunned if they did.

Jon Spytek did not draft Wilson. He has no emotional investment in the pickup. And paying $13 million for a player who hasn’t earned a 60 PFF grade in three seasons is not consistent with how this front office operates. SpyTech wants value. Wilson, at that price, right.

That doesn’t mean Wilson is done in Las Vegas. This means that 2026 is truly the year to prove it. As the Hurricanes prepared their roster for the season, they faced a problem in net as their third goaltender, Kayden Primeau, had played very well during the preseason. As soon as they placed him on waivers to reassign him to their AHL-affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, they had a feeling he would be claimed. And so, they started looking for another goalkeeper to serve as a safety measure should that happen. (Yes, that happened. The Toronto Maple Leafs claimed him, though the Hurricanes later reunited with Primo when they placed him on waivers.)

Enter Brandon Bussey, the Florida Panthers’ latest depth goaltender, signing after several strong seasons with the Providence Bruins. Having never pitched above the AHL-level in his career, he was placed on waivers and was on the drive to Charlotte, NC to join their affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, when he got the call that the Hurricanes had claimed them.

Making a change in more ways than one, he found himself on the opening night roster due to an injury preventing Pyotr Kochetkov from playing. He took the crease again and again and scored a run that made NHL history as he broke records one after another. Of 39 games played, he won 31 – tied for fourth in the entire league for most wins by a goalkeeper this season.

His consistency in net in the first half of the season, despite Kochetkov’s prolonged absence requiring surgery and Frederik Andersen’s cold streak, was key in giving the Hurricanes a huge boost in the standings.

Senators lose top goaltender, throw dice on aging veteran netminder

Meanwhile, the Senators faced the same dilemma as Carolina, albeit later in the season, during an equally crucial time.

In late December, Linus Ullmark – who has been a vocal advocate for mental health in hockey – took leave due to mental issues he was struggling with. The Senators then hit a skid as the position was given to 23-year-old goaltender Levi Merilainen, with 25-year-old Mads Sogaard supporting him.

Amid a blowout 8–2 loss at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche, the Senators announced that then-37-year-old James Reimer, the former Hurricanes goaltender, had been signed to a professional tryout contract.

Possibly, his signing saved their season.

Reimer brought a calm, seasoned veteran presence to a young goalie team that was shaken up, stopped the bleeding and earned the team a valuable Atlantic Division point in its first game back – and further points in three of the five games played while Ullmark was out. He had a goals against average of 2.42 in his 14 games, achieved a shutout and helped the Senators score 16 points while at the crease.

Since both teams face each other in the first round of the playoffs, only one team advances to the next round, so it cannot be underestimated what the Hurricanes and Senators managed to accomplish despite the obstacles they faced. Only 16 of the league’s 32 teams were able to clinch a spot in the postseason. To be able to come this far while dealing with key absences in something as crucial as goaltending is something to be commended, no matter what team you’re on.
