On Tuesday evening, the New York Knicks continued their winning ways with an easy home win over the Indiana Pacers. The Knicks played this game without star point guard Jalen Brunson, who was nursing a neck injury, which meant other players had to take on larger roles.

One of those players was wing Josh Hart, who stepped up to the challenge and scored 33 points with seven rebounds and five assists in the win. After the game, the newest member of the Knicks, Jose Alvarado, jokingly made fun of Hart’s point guard abilities.

“Oh no, he can’t handle any basketball. He just takes the ball and keeps his shoulder down but he’s no point guard. He just did good today, man,” said Alvarado, according to the former Knicks video on Twitter.

Hart and some of his other teammates, including Brunson, have long been known for poking fun at each other in the media, so the fact that Alvarado is already into this tradition shows how quickly he’s fitting in to his new home in New York.

Alvarado had a solid game in his own right in Brunson’s absence on Tuesday, scoring 16 points along with 10 assists in the win.

Meanwhile, Knicks fans will certainly be hoping that Brunson’s injury isn’t something that will keep him out of the lineup for a long time as the playoffs approach. New York is currently third in the Eastern Conference, but they could realistically move up or down one spot by the end of the season depending on how things go.

The Knicks next take the field on Friday evening for a bridge-across road game against the Brooklyn Nets.

No Jalen Brunson, no problem. Even without their key player, the New York Knicks recorded an easy 136-110 win over the Indiana Pacers at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.

Brunson missed the game with an ankle injury and a neck strain. He had not missed a competition since January.

A big factor in the Knicks’ victory was Jose Alvarado, who replaced Brunson in the starting lineup. He scored 16 points on 5 of 10 shooting, including four three-pointers, two rebounds, 10 assists and two steals.

Before tip-off, Alvarado was introduced as being from Christ the King High School. Players are usually introduced to their alma mater in college. When SNY asked about this, they told a slight change felt appropriate.

“I just wanted to show love for the school in the city where I went. Thanks to my college, I’m definitely grateful for my college. But the debut at The Garden was meant to represent the city where I grew up,” explained Alvarado, who was born and raised in Brooklyn.

The 27-year-old guard played four years at Georgia Tech, earning two All-ACC team honors and winning the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award in 2021.

Alvarado has been a solid midseason pick-up for the Knicks, providing instant energy, defensive intensity and shooting off the bench. In 18 games, he has averaged 6.2 points, 4.0 assists and 1.1 steals in 17.0 minutes.

He’s a perfect fit for the Knicks’ culture, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he earns a bigger role in the playoffs.

New York – Before the trade deadline, the New York Knicks acquired point guard Jose Alvarado after half a season of searching for another ball handler. The point guard has fit into head coach Mike Brown’s system relatively seamlessly. In his first month, he helped the group endure the temporary loss of back-up guard Miles McBride. Before Wednesday night’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, reporters asked Brown about his impression of Alvarado so far. The coach was highly complimentary of the Brooklynite, telling reporters that he had already established himself as “irreplaceable” on this Knicks roster.

“He’s been good. The agility is irreplaceable. It gives us a different look,” Brown said, citing the team’s desire to play fast as part of why Alvarado has been so effective. “He’s different in a way that makes him look different. I don’t know what that approach would be, but Jose was available.

“And I give to Leon [Rose] Credit, he found it. It’s helped us on both ends of the floor. …The energy he has on top of the agility he brings to the table every time we step on the floor is irreplaceable. At least with the people we had, or with the people we have. just different.”

Alvarado gets taste of potential playoff role against Thunder

Alvarado has played 18.9 minutes per game in 11 games with New York, averaging 7.5 points, 3.8 assists and 1.4 steals a night. Despite only shooting 29.4% on 3-pointers as a Knick, the energy Brown mentioned is his calling card. The guard has performed well and his overall field goal percentage is right in line with his average throughout his career.

Regardless, Alvarado may have got an idea of ​​what his playoff role might look like on Wednesday against Oklahoma City. The guard made only one of his four shots, including two misses from downtown. He only played 12 minutes in total. He briefly scored on Jalen Brunson 1:24 into the fourth quarter against Lou Dort before returning to the bench.

Once McBride returns from injury, Alvarado may need to impact the game in shorter periods of action on the court. He’ll likely earn more opportunities to finish big shots, especially if the matchup requires it schematically. But if the Knicks want to continue to re-establish depth as a priority under Brown, they’ll have to rely on themselves.

However, the team has yet to have all of Brunson, McBride and Alvarado healthy together. Once that happens, the playoffs will be an imminent concern. Brown would need to rely on his players, and whatever data he was able to get on them when testing came. That could mean smaller – but still important – roles for players like Alvarado.

Jose Alvarado has quietly had a masterful start to life at the New York Knicks, but his comeback against the Houston Rockets thrust him firmly into the spotlight. The Knicks trailed by nearly 16 points when Alvarado entered the game, and his defensive intensity and IQ were immediately on full display. The Knicks outscored Houston 33-15 in the fourth quarter, and much of that swing came from direct ball pressure from Alvarado.

In his five appearances so far, Alvarado has averaged approximately 13.3 points, 4.3 assists and 3.7 steals, while shooting over 55% overall and 37.5% from deep. Alvarado’s obvious impact was also praised by Karl-Anthony Towns, who himself had a big night against Houston.

“They made him feel loved and feel welcomed. I think he reciprocated that energy with his tenacity on the court. Hats off to our fans who welcomed him and gave him the confidence, belief and love to do what he does best,” Catt said, also crediting Knicks supporters for welcoming the point guard.

Regardless, the Knicks as a unit responded with one of their most resilient performances in recent memory, and fans will hope they continue in the same manner as they attempt to compete at the top of the Eastern Conference.

The New York Knicks could not unseat the Detroit Pistons in the 2025-26 NBA season.

On Thursday, the Knicks again failed in their mission to pick up a win at the expense of Detroit, as they lost 126–111 to the visiting Pistons. This was New York’s third loss against Cade Cunningham and Co. this campaign, which also means they have lost this regular season series.

Each of Detroit’s losses was a double-digit blowout. The first meeting in Detroit ended with a score of 121–90, with the Pistons defeating the Knicks 118–80 in the second meeting.

Given how the Pistons have misbehaved in New York this season, it appears that the Detroit Knicks will have their biggest nightmare in the 2025 NBA Playoffs.

But for Knicks newcomer Jose Alvarado, New York’s outlook in the postseason, if it meets the Pistons there, is not as discouraging as it seems.

“The playoffs are a completely different ballgame,” Alvarado said after the game (h/t Knicks Video). “We’re not going to sit here and say, ‘Oh, they beat us in the regular season…’ We’re not thinking like that.”

Still, it’s clear that the Pistons are a big thorn in the side for New York.

The Knicks eliminated Detroit in the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs, but the Pistons have since become one of the best teams not only in the East but in the entire league. At this point in the season only the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder have more wins than Detroit, improving to 41–13. The Knicks, on the other hand, fell to 35-21.
