We’ve all seen the disastrous debt situation over the last few years and Damien Downes’ move southampton HSV Hamburg falls into that category.

After a poor few months at Southampton the 21-year-old moved to Hamburg on loan in the January transfer window.

He joined Southampton last summer for €8m But he managed only one assist in 14 games for the Saints before his departure.

It was expected that the kick would be held in Hamburg, but this did not happen. He has failed to score or assist in nine games so far, and has only been in charge for 506 minutes in total.

BILD reports that criticism has been abundant. In fact, the Southampton loanee ‘has faced such intense criticism’ that it will now be ‘extremely difficult’ for the manager to field him. This is despite the existing issues facing the German side.

So, all indications are that Damien Downs is going to suffer a disappointing end to the season. His performance in Hamburg has turned his fans completely against him.

This would certainly mean he would move back to Southampton in the summer as well. Hamburg will certainly not consider any permanent agreement.

But then what? “Southampton have progressed a lot without him. Now they have Syl Larin to score the goals and revive his career at St Mary’s. This would certainly close the door for a Downes comeback.

But he cost €8 million last summer and to say the least, getting him back this summer will be a tough task. This loan in Germany was going to bring him back on track. Instead, it appears he’s not even on track anymore, so much so that even his manager won’t come to his side in the middle of a crisis.

That’s according to BT’s ‘football expert’ Jannik LiburdSpeaking on the podcast BT Fodbold about the Celtic number one.

Schmeichel has found himself under fire after a number of high-profile mistakes in recent weeks.

The 39-year-old faced particular criticism after last week’s 4-1 Europa League play-off defeat to Stuttgart.

He was responsible for at least two goals in that game. The first came from a poor clearance after Bilal El Khanous’s difficult effort to save a relatively low strike. Later he also failed to deal with Jamie Levelling’s 20-yard shot.

There are more such examples. The 3–2 win over Kilmarnock was marked by his role in two opposition goals, which was a mistake against Aberdeen in last year’s 2025 Scottish Cup Final.

Due to this, questions are being raised about his role and how long this experienced player can remain at the top level. The Celtic fans in particular seem to have had enough and he was criticized by some sections of the team at Celtic Park after last week’s defeat to Stuttgart.

The Celtic situation also raises questions over his international future. Denmark are set to play in a World Cup qualifier next month after finishing runners-up to Scotland.

After waiting two years to make his debut following his first call-up in 2011, Schmeichel has been their number one for 13 years.

There have been many significant moments, including setting a new record for most minutes without conceding a goal. With this he went ahead of his father. However, Liburd believes the time has come for change.

“I can already see the title for myself, but yes – I think so,” He said.

“This is a very vulnerable position to change. And Kasper Schmeichel has been a legend and driving force in this national team for many years – and is at a level that can be described as world class.

“But it is time for a change – and it may be for a while. Mads Hermansen has stepped up and become the first-choice goalkeeper at West Ham. And unfortunately, what we see from Kasper Schmeichel is not that good anymore.

“I have a lot of respect for them, but when I look at the goals that Celtic are conceding this season, I’m not comfortable as a national team supporter.”
