The San Francisco Giants made a major change to their roster, trading starting catcher Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Giants. The move immediately creates space for recently called up Jesus Rodriguez to take over in San Francisco.

As for the guards, it adds depth to a team that already had three starters in David Frye, Austin Hedges and Bo Naylor, but Naylor’s struggles this season kept him off the roster. He was sent to Triple-A in an effort to improve Cleveland’s defensive issues behind the plate.

Is Bailey’s best behind him?

This is a fair question. Backstop, some of the best (if not the best) games though. Best in the game) defensive metrics, has never been a particularly powerful bat. Bailey has a career .224 batting average and has hit only 22 home runs over three seasons in MLB.

However, the thing is. For a catcher, that’s not terrible production. This is about average. For any other offensive player, this is a terrible mark. But catchers in baseball exist in a strange place. As long as their defense and their ability to manage their pitching staff is solid, most teams are willing to attack aggressively.

That being said, it’s always great to have a catcher who can rake. Look at guys like Will Smith, Cal Raley or even former Giants catcher Buster Posey. They are assets to their teams in many ways besides defense, but they are anomalies when it comes to catching groups in MLB.

Underlying metrics hint at potential change

Bailey has struggled at the plate for a long time, but behind the dish he is ahead of everyone else. He has won two gold medals, has a lifetime .992 fielding percentage and is ranked in the 100th percentile via Statcast in framing and pop time (1.86 seconds). He is a key catcher for whichever team he is on.

But can he kill? It is possible. Bailey has had a disappointing start with San Francisco this season. So far, he has put up a .146/.213/.183 slash line. This resulted in a ridiculously poor 16 wRC+ (where 100 is average). But, despite that line, there is hope here. Bailey’s weighting on base average (wOBA) is .190, but his expected weighting (xwOBA) is a more respectable .283 mark.

this is one Big Difference. It’s possible that Cleveland is betting on Bailey’s bat to play out as the underlying metrics suggest. Either way, the club receives an elite backstop to handle its pitching staff.

It’s safe to say that this season hasn’t started as well as it could have for the Giants. In the first year of new manager Tony Vitello’s tenure, the club has a record of 15–23 and are in fifth place in the National League West entering Saturday. It’s hard to see a club as talented as this one struggling so much.

But the recent call-ups of top prospects Bryce Aldridge and Jesus Rodriguez have signaled a change for San Francisco. It seems the group now wants to use this moment to give their young players time to acclimate to MLB. Barring injury or an unexpected trade, they could benefit next season with Aldridge and Rodriguez joining the roster.

Wilkinson’s stint in the minors offers hope

It’s not a perfect reconstruction, but it’s something like that. The trade of Bailey for Matt Wilkinson and a draft pick further adds to this argument. Wilkinson is a very talented young pitcher at the Double-A level in the Minors. So far this season, he has a 1.59 ERA in 28 1/3 innings. That performance could soon get him promoted to the Triple-A level in the Giants’ system.

It’s also possible that, if San Francisco falls even further out of contention, Wilkinson could be called up late in the season to get some big league reps. The possibility of this still remains to be seen, but it is certainly a possibility.

Either way, this is a move that should be encouraging to Giants fans, not the other way around. It’s not like President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey is saying he has already quit the year before, it’s a move that seems prudent. San Francisco is expecting its young players to step up and prove themselves. Only time will tell if that strategy pays off.

However, most mock drafts and expert opinions point to the Jets selecting Texas Tech pass rusher David Bailey or his Ohio State counterpart Arvel Reese. The reason a lot of people are divided on them is the perception that Bayley is better right now, with Reese having a much better fit.

Well, it seems like the Jets’ decision makers aren’t thinking long term and want to get better immediately after a three-win season.

The Utah Jazz face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night and Ace Bailey is once again at the center of the injury report. He is listed as questionable under the concussion protocol, putting the Jazz rookie in focus as Utah looks to snap a three-game losing streak.

Looking for momentum heading into the season finale, the Jazz enter the matchup at 20-48, No. 14 in the West. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves, 42-27, come in at No. 6 in the West, aiming to make it back-to-back wins and solidify their playoff position. Here’s everything we know from the injury report about Ace Bailey and his game status against the Timberwolves.

Ace Bailey has been a consistent contributor for the Jazz throughout the season. In 59 games, he averaged 12.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 26.7 minutes per game. He is shooting 44.5 percent from the field, 34.9 percent from three and 74.2 percent from the free-throw line. Even as a young unit, Bailey provides scoring balance and spacing on the wing. His ability to contribute on both ends provides Utah with additional structure, especially with several key players sidelined. When he’s available, the Jazz offense flows with more rhythm and flexibility.

Ace Bailey Injury Status vs. Timberwolves

The Jazz’s injury report makes Bailey’s availability even more important. Utah is already shorthanded. Lauri Markkanen (hip), Walker Kessler (shoulder), Jusuf Nurkic (nose), Jaren Jackson Jr. (knee), and Keyonte George (hamstring) are all out. John Conchar (calf) is questionable, while Blake Hinson is out on G League assignment.

Utah’s margin for error becomes smaller with each absence as the team tries to stop its skid and find stability late in the season. The Timberwolves, on the other hand, have not yet submitted their full injury report, but they have already confirmed that Anthony Edwards will miss 1-2 weeks, which will pose a challenge as Minnesota looks to build momentum with another win.

Jason Terry knows a thing or two about excelling as a shooter.

The longtime NBA legend played 19 seasons in the league, winning the Sixth Man of the Year award during the 2008–09 season. Terry finished his career as a 38.0% shooter from beyond the arc, shooting a career-high 43.8% from 3-point range during the 2006–07 season, when the Dallas Mavericks posted the league’s best record at 67–15.

Terry currently serves as an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz, a role he has held since the 2022–23 season. One of the Jazz’s most promising young players is none other than Ace Bailey, who was their top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Bailey was selected with the fifth overall selection in the draft after averaging 17.6 points per game during his lone season at Rutgers.

In the first half of the season, the 6-foot-9 Bailey has played a key role in the rotation for the Jazz, averaging 11.7 points and 3.9 rebounds per game in 49 games and 38 starts. Terry has high expectations for Bailey, even comparing him to Hall of Fame guard Ray Allen when it comes to his early release.

Allen was a 10-time All-Star who is considered one of the best 3-point shooters of all time.

Terry said in a personal interview, “There are no limits for Ace Bailey, because he’s a blank canvas.” “He’s only 19 years old. He’s coming on. He’s raw, but he has supreme athleticism and shooting ability – he could be one of the great shooters from long range, when it’s all said and done. He has a quick release, and he gets it off. He gets it over quickly, kind of like a Ray Allen type of release. He doesn’t jump that high. But as far as hitting that shot. He gets it over with pretty quickly.”

So far this season, Bailey is converting 45.0% of his attempts and 34.0% of his 3-point shots. Terry said where Bailey will excel in his 3-point attempts is “coming off screens on pin downs” and shooting 3-pointers in transition.

Bailey clearly has a long way to go before he’s in the same league as Allen, but he’s getting significant playing time as part of a rebuilding effort in Utah. The 19-year-old ranks fourth in points and fifth in 3-pointers made on the Jazz.

As noted, Bailey only spent one year in college. Plus, considering Utah is in obvious rebuilding mode, he’ll have all the time in the world to develop. At 18-38, they currently sit in 13th place in the Western Conference after posting the worst record in the NBA last season at 17-65.

The sky is definitely the limit for the 6-foot-9 small forward.
