The German side had blocked the negotiations. Brighton were not allowed to submit their €35 million offer. Fabian Herzeler’s side do not want to go anywhere near the €50m asking price. The plan was to wait for the price to drop and then move up.

Meanwhile, Brentford have made a move and offered Cologne €50m. It looked like the deal was moving forward, but then a report on Thursday said Sabrina El Mala drops a transfer bomb on Thursday and blocked the move.

Sport Bild report the possibility that he is ‘betting on Chelsea.’ According to their information, Chelsea have hinted in talks with Said El Mala’s representatives that they could pursue a move to Brighton.

They would then send the young star back to Cologne on loan for a year. Such an arrangement would be a ‘dream come true’ for the family. El Mala’s future will be settled, and he can spend another year in his homeland. Cologne will be happy too

The problem is that Chelsea are unlikely to do such a deal. Their financial situation will not allow a €50 million deal this summer, not without a sale first. Reportedly, the Blues are avoiding any expensive deal that does not ‘provide an immediate boost’.

Meanwhile, Brighton have no interest in a loan-back deal. But it seems Sabrina El Mala is holding out hope, perhaps explaining the recent Brentford rejection.

Over the weekend, Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic was in attendance for the NBA All-Star Game at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. Jokic played very little for Team World at the festival as he is recovering from a recent knee injury, but he still seemed to enjoy most of the time during the weekend.

Jokic has long been known to be friends with fellow international NBA star Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers, and at one point, the Serbian big man cracked a joke at Doncic’s expense.

The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship is the crème de la crème of Irish Hurling competitions. It takes place between April and July every year, with the 2024 version being the tournament’s 137th event. 

The All-Ireland Final is the pinnacle of the Irish sporting calendar. It takes place in Dublin every summer and is one of the hottest tickets in the Irish capital, with Croke Park selling out annually for the event. 

The Inter-County competition has had 13 different winners over the years, with Kilkenny being the most successful county in the competition’s history. However, The Cats have not tasted glory since 2015. 

Limerick has been the most dominant side in recent years, winning four of the last five tournaments. However, they were denied a record-breaking spot in a fifth consecutive final in the semis this year when they lost to Cork. Cork would go on to lose to 2024 winners Clare in the final at Croke Park. 

Provincial Championships

The Provincial Championships take place in May/June every year, with all four Irish provinces, Connacht, Leinster, Munter and Ulster, holding their own championships.

Depending on the province, the intensity of these games can be incredibly high, with some provinces being more competitive than others. Winning this is also extremely advantageous for a county’s positioning in the All-Ireland Championship. 

National Hurling League

The National Hurling League takes place between January and March. It is an inter-county competition that operates with a promotion and relegation system. The top division, Division 1, consists of 12 teams split across two divisions of even quality. The two winning teams from each division then face off in the National League Hurling final. 

Clare won the 2024 league title, defeating Kilkenny  3-16 to 1-20 in the final at the FBD Semple Stadium in Tipperary. 

Fitzgibbon Cup

Hurling in Ireland is not restricted to counties; educational institutes are also involved. The Fitzgibbon Cup is an annual competition between higher educational institutes in the country. The tournament lasts a month between January and February and uses a group and knockout format. 

The tournament is not as popular as the bigger competitions, but it has increased in popularity and is particularly popular with Irish hurling bettors. The 2024 edition was won by Limerick outfit Mary Immaculate College, claiming their third title with a victory over the University of Limerick in an all-Limerick affair.

Match Betting

The most common type of hurling bet to place is a match or win bet. This is when you choose which team will win a particular match. You have three options: the home team, the away team, or a draw. Due to the high-scoring nature of hurling matches, a draw is always going to have quite long odds. 

Goalscorer Markets

As in football or other team sports, goalscorer markets are popular in hurling. These include the first/last goalscorer or anytime goal scorer. There are 30 active players on the pitch in a hurling game, so the odds in these markets can often be quite generous. 

Handicap

Handicap bets are a personal favourite of mine. The purpose of a handicap bet is to level the playing field in a game. For example, you might bet on Limerick to beat Dublin with Limerick -15. This means Limerick will need to beat Dublin by more than 15 points for the bet to pay out. 

Total Points

Hurling is a very high-scoring game. As such, the total points markets can be extremely popular with punters. In most instances, this will be an over/under market. For example, you might bet on a match having over or under 40 points. You can also bet on the total points being odd or even, but this is such a toss-up that I would not advise betting on it. 

Outrights

One of my preferred betting types for hurling is outright bets. These are bets on the outcomes of competitions or tournaments. For example, you might bet on Clare to win the All-Ireland Championship in 2026. While these bets are much longer plays, they can often offer generous odds and benefit those who are particularly knowledgeable about the sport.
