Recently, one of the major talking points in the NBA has been whether or not the Miami Heat violated some unwritten rules of basketball when center Bam Adebayo scored 83 points in a game against the Washington Wizards, passing Kobe Bryant for second-most all-time. Many critics have pointed to Adebayo’s 43 free throw attempts as well as some of the Heat’s bizarre late-game strategies as reasons to discredit the scoring explosion.

However, one person coming to Adebayo’s defense is former NBA guard Patrick Beverley, who recently took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the debate.

“I never knew there was a fake 83. A motherf***** never scored an 83, how could it be fake? This is as real as it gets… People were shocked it was Bam and it wasn’t Steph Curry, it was LeBron James… If KD had the same 83 with the same stats, they wouldn’t treat it like that. It was shocking to people that Bam did that… Bam tops in the NBA Big in 3. Big in top 3… I don’t know what the surprise is,” he said on X, according to Heat Central.

In fact, many were surprised that it was Adebayo, who was averaging just under 20 points per game before the game, who broke Bryant’s second-place mark, and not one of the more high-octane scorers across the NBA landscape.

However, it does show just how talented NBA players really are… and how bad the Wizards defense really is.

Meanwhile, the Heat are looking to bounce back from their seven-game winning streak after losing two consecutive games. They will next take the field on Thursday evening in a home match against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Last Friday, Victor Wembanyama scored 25 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 116-112 win over the LA Clippers. Vembanyama finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds.

After this, Vembanyama looked very emotional after the victory. However, not everyone was particularly impressed.

Former NBA player Patrick Beverley openly criticized the perceived double standard regarding players’ expression of emotions on Twitter (formerly Twitter). Beverley mentioned shedding tears over winning an NBA play-in game in 2022 while playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

This was not the first time that Beverley had shed tears in reference to a sport. During the 2017 NBA playoffs, Beverley played with the Houston Rockets. In Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals, he played in the game right after his grandfather passed away. When he came onto the court and sat on the bench after scoring his first basket, he was seen crying.

Overall, Beverley played in the NBA from 2013 to 2024. He is currently playing for PAOK BC in the Greek Basketball League.

Meanwhile, the Spurs are 46-17, which is the second-best record in the Western Conference. Vembanyama is averaging 23.9 points and 11.1 rebounds per game.

Additionally, he received the NBA Player of the Month and Defensive Player of the Month awards for February. A month in which Spurs did not lose a single game.

The Spurs defeated the Rockets 145-120 on Sunday. Vembanyama scored 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Of course, teams were dealing with minimal cap space last offseason and Young also reportedly wanted to be the focal point of his new team, both of which could have been a factor in his move to the Wizards. Regardless, Beverley was clearly late to the party and posted this comment a few weeks after the move, even though he has yet to play a game due to a right knee sprain and quadriceps strain.

The controversy began when Beverley claimed that Trae’s postseason resume was not commensurate with the superstardom he had earned. Young has reached the playoffs three times in his seven NBA seasons, reaching the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals with the Hawks. This came after averaging 28.8 points and 9.5 assists per game in the playoffs.

Beverley went even further, questioning Young’s leadership reputation in the league. He suggested that players and staff associated with the Hawks organization were transferred or replaced due to the environment surrounding Young, reviving the narrative that has followed the Atlanta guard throughout his career.

The Wizards star responded in a nearly 12-minute YouTube video. Despite this, according to The Athletic, Beverley went further and even labeled Young a “coach killer”, claiming that coaches, teammates and front-office personnel associated with him are often replaced.

While the Hawks have indeed cycled through leadership, including head coaches Lloyd Pierce and Nate McMillan, the organization’s instability was not due to its star player alone. Plus, at 27, Young is still learning the ropes and has had plenty of time to silence his critics, with Beverley undoubtedly at the forefront of that line.
