Jaylen Brown explains how astrology helps him lead Boston’s locker room

Jaylen Brown said his leadership approach with the Boston Celtics has taken an unconventional turn this season, incorporating astrology and numerology to better communicate with teammates.

Brown revealed the method after Boston’s 120-99 win over the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night, a performance in which he led the team with 32 points while adding six rebounds, five assists and two steals. He shot a perfect 11 of 20 from the field and 9 of 9 from the free-throw line, and finished 1 of 4 from three-point range in 35 minutes.

Speaking after the game with CelticsBlog’s Noah Dalzell, Brown detailed how studying the personalities of teammates through astrology and numerology has helped him hone his communication style.

“I learned a lot about each of our guys, even down to liking astrology – everything. I learned the communication styles that work best for each person, and started using those when I talk to each person… I didn’t know that would work before the season started but that thing definitely works.”

Brown said he has gone so far as to memorize specific traits associated with teammates’ zodiac signs and numerology profiles.

“I remember like Neemias, he’s the year of the rabbit so his communication is different from D-White. D-White is the year of the dog so his communication style is different. Hugo is also a dog, Peyton is a tiger, JT is a tiger, Ron is a dragon, who is a dragon. Nicola he’s new to our team, he’s the year of the horse right now. Each of them have different communication styles and you can go into that like numerology as well.”

He also explained how numerology influences his leadership approach.

“Sam is five, I’m five… so, different breakdowns and you can even go into star signs. Like JT, he’s Pisces, etc. I learned all different kinds of things, so I was able to communicate to people in different ways to help my leadership this year.”

This approach coincided with one of the most productive seasons of Brown’s career. Through 62 games, the 28-year-old has averaged 28.5 points, seven rebounds, 5.1 assists and one steal per contest, while shooting 48% from the field and 34.2% from three-point range in 34.1 minutes per game.

Brown’s performance has helped Boston achieve a 46–23 record and the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference standings. The Celtics have maintained that position despite star forward Jayson Tatum recently returning from an Achilles injury and playing only six games since his return.

As the regular season progressed, Brown’s combination of on-court production and off-court leadership has played a central role in Boston’s success. His willingness to explore unconventional ways to connect with teammates has become a defining element of his approach during a season in which the Celtics have remained one of the conference’s top contenders.

Watch Boston’s emotional Kristaps Porzingis tribute video

The Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors are in the middle of a competitive battle on ESPN. The Celtics are playing in front of a packed crowd at home against a Warriors team without Steph Curry due to injury.

Another popular name, Kristaps Porzingis, is back at TD Garden after playing two incredible seasons with the Celtics in Beantown. Porzingis was traded to the Atlanta Hawks last offseason, and then the Hawks ultimately traded him to the Warriors before the NBA trade deadline. It’s Porzingis’ first game back, so the Celtics gave him an emotional tribute video.

The Celtics can’t win the NBA Finals without Porzingis in 2023-24. His ability to stretch the field and play elite defense was a big part of why Boston was so dominant during that championship run. Remember the first game of the Finals, when Porzingis couldn’t miss a shot in the first quarter? He scored 20 points off the bench in the game, along with six rebounds and three blocks.

His time, as well as Jrue Holiday’s, ended after last season when the Celtics lost to the New York Knicks in the quarterfinals of the NBA playoffs. Porzingis was not playing at the time as he was dealing with an undisclosed illness. The Celtics moved on, but they remained a very good team.

Boston is in second place in the conference, and if they beat the Warriors, they will be just 3.5 games behind the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in the East.

Kendrick Perkins makes Boston’s feelings clear amid Jayson Tatum’s expected return

Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum may be close to making his return to the lineup, and former Celtics center Kendrick Perkins believes the rest of the league should take notice.

Tatum was upgraded to questionable ahead of Boston’s Friday matchup against the Dallas Mavericks, the first time he has earned that designation this season since suffering an Achilles injury last year. The development has sparked renewed discussion about Boston’s championship outlook as the forward moves into the final stages of his recovery.

Perkins addressed Tatum’s potential return during the latest episode of The Road Trippin’ Show, explaining that he believes Boston becomes significantly more dangerous once the All-Star forward re-enters the rotation.

“If you hear Tatum coming back you have to be scared. They’re playing with house money. They have the most championship experience in the Eastern Conference. If I’m Tatum, and these five-on-fives are going well, damn it, I’m coming back. Because look every player is different. I’m not blaming it on the players, but as we all know as athletes when you get injured, as a player you “Being aware of who you are, accountability and what you do and what you put into your body speeds up the healing process.”

Perkins also shared details he said came from Celtics assistant coach Sam Cassell regarding Tatum’s approach to rehab.

“There are two things I know about Jason Tatum: He doesn’t smoke and he doesn’t drink. Sam Cassel told me during this whole process that they literally had to tell him no, you can’t come today. Give us Sunday off. We’ve been with you six days a week, twice a day. You can’t come today.”

Celtics call Jayson Tatum ‘most dangerous team’ as he nears return

Perkins concluded by emphasizing how motivated Tatum could be to see Boston continue to compete near the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

“This team feels like they can go and they’ve got a chance. It’s unexpected when you have that window. Jayson Tatum is on the outside looking in, he’s eager to get back on the floor. They’re the most dangerous team in the league.”

Tatum finished the 2024–25 season averaging 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, six assists and 1.1 steals per game, while shooting 45.2% from the field and 34.3% from 3-point range in 72 appearances. He averaged 36.4 minutes per contest before suffering an Achilles injury during Boston’s second-round playoff loss to the New York Knicks last May.

Despite Tatum’s absence this season, Boston remains among the top teams in the conference. Jaylen Brown has led this effort, and has had a career-best campaign, guiding the Celtics to a 41-21 record and the No. 2 seed in the East.

Brown averaged 28.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, five assists and one steal per game, while shooting 48% from the field and 34.8% from 3-point range in 55 games.

The Celtics will look to bounce back from Wednesday’s 118-89 loss to the Charlotte Hornets when they host Dallas on Friday at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN. Boston will then begin a three-game road trip against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday at 1:00 PM ET on ABC.

With Tatum’s potential return, Boston’s postseason outlook could soon take another significant step forward.

Kendrick Perkins says Jayson Tatum’s injury won’t derail Boston’s NBA Finals hopes

The Boston Celtics came out of the All-Star break with another blowout win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday as they continued their West Coast trip. The win came as the team awaits further updates on injured star Jayson Tatum, who many doubt can return any time soon this season.

However, one person who thinks the Celtics can reach their goal this season regardless of whether Tatum is in the lineup is former ESPN big man Kendrick Perkins, who recently took to First Take to express his thoughts.

“They can go to the NBA Finals without [Jayson] Tatum. … They’re the most dangerous team in the NBA because they have no expectations,” Perkins, formerly of First Take on X, said via Twitter.

Perkins also said that Boston has “the best two-way player in the game in Jaylen Brown, because no other player in the league is doing what he is doing in terms of being top five in scoring and top five defensively in opponent field goal percentage.”

In fact, Brown is getting it done on both ends of the floor this year, although fans of Kawhi Leonard, Victor Wembanyama and many other players will strongly disagree with Perkins’ assessment.

Still, at this juncture, the Celtics are starting to look like a real threat even without Tatum in the lineup. There is a theory that Tatum’s hasty return this season could actually work against Boston’s 2025-26 plans, considering the team’s rhythm would be at least temporarily disrupted, and the fact that the star would have a lot of rust to shake off. Tatum also has not distinguished himself as a postseason performer so far in his career, which continued last year against the New York Knicks.

In any case, the Celtics’ road trip continues on Tuesday against the Phoenix Suns.

Boston’s praise from Amazon Prime Crew won’t thrill the Pistons

The Boston Celtics started the season with a lot of questions about their ability to compete with the best teams. The injury to Jayson Tatum and the resulting massive turnover of players meant that the Celtics were not even seen as a playoff contender by many.

However, so far they find themselves in second place in the Eastern Conference with a 36–19 record, and the addition of Nikola Vucevic has only improved. His impressive performance also led to some high praise from an unexpected source, with Blake Griffin naming Boston when asked about the team with the fewest weaknesses in the East.

“This might be the team that has the fewest questions,” Griffin said on Amazon Prime, according to a post on X by insider Taylor Snow, with the rest of the crew also naming the Celtics in the segment.

“To me, the Boston Celtics have the best habits of any team in the NBA,” Udonis Haslem claimed, before Rudy Gay explained how Vucevic has single-handedly solved their ‘problems’.

And that praise is also worthy. Despite only playing three games so far, the Montenegrin big man has averaged 15.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists, with the Celtics immediately relying on his interior scoring and floor spacing.

Of course, much of the credit for this also goes to Joe Mazzulla. Despite massive changes in personnel, the Celtics have employed the same high-velocity playing style that continues to get results.

With the offensive leadership of Jaylen Brown (29.3 points) and the possibility of Tatum still playing a role at the business end of the season, the Celtics look capable of emerging as title contenders once again. Derrick White and Peyton Pritchard are both averaging 17.2 points per game, and the addition of Vucevic gives this team another offensive outlet and solution in games where they struggle to score from inside, instead relying heavily on distance shooting.

There’s no doubt that this new-look Celtics team is still capable of producing some big results.

Peyton Pritchard passes Ray Allen on Boston’s 3-pointers list

The Boston Celtics take on the Golden State Warriors in the woodshed at San Francisco’s Chase Center on Thursday, with Peyton Pritchard adding even more to his team’s incredible evening.

Pritchard moved ahead on the franchise’s all-time 3-pointers list, passing the legendary Ray Allen for the No. 6 spot via Boston coverage manager Taylor Snow.

Former Oregon Ducks star Pritchard entered the Warriors game with 797 3-pointers in his NBA career with Boston, and Allen needed only one to tie the franchise list.

The 28-year-old Prichard has played all of his years in the NBA in Celtics colors, and he has developed into one of the team’s more reliable offensive weapons.

With Jayson Tatum still out due to injury, Pritchard has seen increased playing time and has been rewarded by providing consistent scoring for Boston, mostly as a starter. During his first 53 games in the 2025–26 NBA season, Prichard averaged 17.2 points (career-high), 4.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists, while draining 2.6 3-pointers per outing.

Opposing defenses have paid more attention to Pritchard amid Tatum’s absence. But he’s still providing consistent offensive performance for the Celtics, who remain one of the league’s best teams despite Tatum’s injury.

Pritchard, whose current contract with Boston does not expire until the summer of 2028, can continue to compile more 3-point shots. Right above him on the list is Marcus Smart, who drained a total of 911 3-pointers as a Celtic.

Paul Pierce is the Boston franchise’s all-time leader in 3-pointers with 1,823.
