If the San Francisco 49ers thought their patience with Brandon Aiyuk would soon turn into a trade, a new report explains why they’re fooling themselves.

After the 2023 season, it looked like Aiyuk was going to become one of the top stars in the NFL and one of the faces of the 49ers roster. Boy, it seems like a long time ago. In the two years since his breakout season, the relationship between team and receiver has been downright dramatic.

First, he was late to the start of the 2024 season because he was holding out for a new long-term contract. He got it, but then he tore his ACL seven games into that campaign. Yet, instead of taking the field last season, Aiyuk sat out the entire 2025 season due to ongoing differences with the organization. That made divorce a guarantee this offseason.

However, rather than trade the talented but problematic receiver and move on, general manager John Lynch is under the impression that if he is patient, he will find a team that would be willing to give Aiyuk something rather than lose him for nothing. Well, it looks like that’s not going to happen, and according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Lynch just needs to pull the trigger on his release.

Graziano says the 49ers may choose to wait a few more months and hope a team becomes desperate. But considering the financial cost and draft pick value, no team is going to waste any money on a deal when they can get him for a much lower price with a little patience.

If the 49ers are looking petty, they may have to wait well into the preseason to finally cut the 28-year-old.

Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brandon Sorsby is facing the possibility of being stripped of his eligibility by the NCAA in 2022 for allegedly betting on football games while he was with the Indiana Hoosiers. If that happens, the NFL’s supplemental draft may once again be relevant.

While the supplemental draft once produced starting-caliber players such as Josh Gordon (2012) and Ahmad Brooks (2006), a player has not been selected since 2019. Given the number of quarterback-needy teams around the league, Sorsby could change that if he decides to turn pro.

The Dallas Cowboys have already demonstrated they are willing to gamble on young quarterbacks with attractive physical tools (Trey Lance and Joe Milton); Sorsby was a more attractive prospect than any of them when he was acquired. It will also be a homecoming for the 23-year-old quarterback, who starred at Lake Dallas High School in Denton, Texas. Sorsby will have the opportunity to learn from Dak Prescott for two-plus years before potentially taking over as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback in 2028. This may have required Jerry Jones to sacrifice a second-day pick, but he has made more aggressive moves with first-round draft capital for worse players.

Now that he is dealing with a gambling scandal, there is too much risk in thrusting him into a starting role so soon. However, the worst NFL teams are willing to take more chances. Fortunately, the Miami Dolphins already have a starting quarterback to whom they are financially committed for 2026. Malik Willis’ contract should ensure that he remains the Dolphins’ starter, allowing the coaching staff to use this season as a development year for Soursby. If he makes a strong impact and demonstrates he’s ready to be the starter, Miami could potentially use a top-three pick on wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.

New York Jets

On the other hand, Raptors are also shorthanded and have many potential absences. Among them is none other than Brandon Ingram, who is listed as questionable on the official injury report due to inflammation in the heel of his right foot, a problem that kept him out of the win against the Jazz.

Brandon Ingram’s injury status vs. Clippers

Given that Brandon Ingram’s injury report is questionable, his availability for this late-night contest in Los Angeles remains uncertain. Ingram played against the Phoenix Suns, but had a bad night, scoring only six points in 27 minutes, while getting four rebounds and three blocks on 3-10 shooting. Toronto lost that game 120–98.

They enter this matchup at 40-31, which is good for 5th place in the East. The Raptors scored 143 points in their last game, while also recording a franchise-record 49 assists, showing they are capable of hurting defenses even without Ingram.

However, four of their starters finished with over 20 points, led by RJ Barrett, who returned with 27, while Scotty Barnes had a double-double of 20 points and 10 assists. Additionally, Ingram is averaging 21.6 points per game and if he misses his second consecutive game, Toronto will need players like Barrett and Barnes to take over offensive responsibilities.

Barrett has scored more than 20 points in 10 of his last 15 games, while Barnes is averaging 18.6 points per game for the season. This matchup presents a contrast in styles, with Toronto relying heavily on ball movement and assist-driven offense (third in the NBA at 29.1 assists per game), while Los Angeles relies on shot efficiency and halfcourt scoring.

Regardless, the Clippers have won six of their last eight games in the Intuit Dome, while averaging 127.3 points over that span. They also remain an efficient offensive unit, ranking among the league leaders in both field goal percentage (48.5%) and three-point shooting (36.5%), while also leading the NBA in free-throw percentage (82.6%).

LA also won the first meeting between the two sides this season, 121–117 in overtime. Still, Leonard is averaging 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists this campaign and L.A.’s ability to make that run may also depend on whether their best player plays.

Toronto Raptors forward Brandon Ingram was scratched in the final minutes of their game against the Utah Jazz on Monday due to heel swelling. But even without him, the Raptors claimed an easy 143-127 victory at the Delta Center.

Ingram was originally part of the starting lineup against the Jazz, but moments before tip-off, he was replaced by Jacoby Walter. The Raptors later announced that Ingram would miss the game.

Following their win, their fourth in six games, Toronto coach Darko Rajakovic was optimistic Ingram’s condition, as shown in video posted by Raptors reporter Omar Osman.

“It’s not really a big concern here. It’s just flared up. It’s something we’ll look at and see how he feels tomorrow. But I don’t think it’s going to be anything (serious),” Rajakovic said.

The Raptors are struggling to cement their place in the playoffs, and they cannot afford to lose the 28-year-old Ingram, who has a long injury history.

With the win over Utah, they improved to 40–31, good for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Toronto has missed the playoffs for three consecutive years.

RJ Barrett stepped up in Ingram’s absence and scored a team-best 27 points on 10 of 15 shooting, including 4 of 5 from long range.

Sandro Mamukelashvili also had a solid performance with 23 points, four rebounds and five steals, while Walter and Scotty Barnes also reached the 20-point mark.

The Raptors were impressive with their accuracy, shooting 61% from the field, including 20 of 37 from Rainbow Country. They are ahead by 35 points.

He returns to action on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Toronto Raptors are stumbling right when they need to make a run. After Wednesday night’s disappointing 122-111 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, All-Star forward Brandon Ingram had nothing to say about the current state of the team.

The “rough patch” in the crowded Eastern Conference is proving costly. This latest loss dropped Toronto from the fifth seed to seventh, leaving them half a game behind both the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat. Despite Immanuel Quickley’s 25 points and a stellar performance from Scotty Barnes, the Raptors couldn’t stop New Orleans’ duo of Trey Murphy III and Dejounte Murray.

Murphy caught fire from deep, scoring 28 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc, while Murray spoiled Ingram’s homecoming by adding 27 points. The Raptors struggled with efficiency, shooting just 31.8 percent from downtown compared to the Pelicans’ blazing 48.3 percent.

Toronto briefly cut an 18-point deficit to just two early in the fourth quarter, but a lack of defensive urgency resulted in the Pelicans taking an 8–0 lead. For a team with championship aspirations, the margin for error is officially gone. If Ingram and the Raptors don’t figure it out soon, they could find themselves fighting to stay out of the play-in tournament.

The Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors face each other for an interesting showdown north of the border at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Sunday.

The Mavericks are looking to snap a six-game losing streak, while the Raptors are aiming to avoid losing their third consecutive game.

This will be the second and last time the Mavericks and Raptors face off in the 2025-26 NBA regular season, and possibly for the remainder of the campaign.

Meanwhile, the statuses of Cooper Flagg and Brandon Ingram have also been revealed for their respective teams.

“The Mavericks have upgraded Cooper Flagg and made him available for today’s game in Toronto. Brandon Ingram (illness) has also been made available to the Raptors,” NBA insider Marc Stein reported via a social media post on Twitter yesterday, an hour before the contest began.

Through his first 51 games in his NBA career, the former Duke Blue Devils star Flagg has averaged 20.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from behind the arc.

Another former Duke basketball star, Ingram entered the Mavericks game with season averages of 21.9 points, 5.7 boards and 3.8 assists, while making 47.2 percent of his attempts from the field and 37.3 percent from 3-point field through 60 games.

In the first meeting between the Mavericks and Raptors this season, the Flag and Company topped the visiting Raptors on October 26, 139–129, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. Flagg had 22 points on 8-for-14 shooting in that game, while Ingram also had 22 points on 10-for-16 shooting.

The Miami Heat delivered another explosive offensive performance Friday night, with Tyler Herro recording a dominant win that later drew praise from the opposing locker room. Herro’s performance showcased Miami’s offensive ability when clicking, and reinforced how difficult the Heat’s perimeter attack can be for opposing defenses to stop.

The Heat defeated the Charlotte Hornets 128-120 on Friday at the Spectrum Center. Herro led the way with 33 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. The guard also knocked down eight triples while controlling the pace throughout the game.

Herro’s offensive impact versus Charlotte’s defense proved decisive late in the game. Miami trailed briefly before closing out strongly in the fourth quarter, as Herro ignited a key run, hitting multiple shots from deep while consistently moving without the ball to create open looks.

After the game, Hornets head coach Charles Lee discussed the defensive challenges created by Herro. Hunter Bailey of the Charlotte Observer shared Lee’s comments after the loss, first on Twitter.

I felt like I had that raw talent. I think the first roles I played that were good like ‘Call Me By Her Name’ or ‘Beautiful Boy’ were all raw talent. There was no real process to it. But it was just kind of a mess. And I think it took a few years and the onslaught of fame and attention and intensity,” he said.

Chalamet effectively claimed that although he also felt like a talented actor, especially looking at his earlier work, it was only later that he developed a ‘real process’. Chalamet said that early in his career, he felt like an untapped talent like Brandon Roy.

“I can look at LeBron and his career. The first few years in Cleveland and I had no process or way to deal with it. ‘I feel like ‘A Complete Unknown’ and ‘Marty Supreme.’ It’s the first time I really had a process and a method, I don’t want to say an artistic process. I don’t want to ignore my other work, but this is the first time I’ve really worked on a large scale,” he said.

Of course, while his early work in films like Beautiful Boy was also influential and earned him praise, it was only later that Chalamet really took off working. He also compared the situation to James’s early days in Cleveland, where he was a scoring phenomenon and an athletic monster, rather than the playmaker-scorer hybrid he eventually developed into.

Although the comparison may not be the most straightforward, one can definitely see where Chalamet is coming from, and how much respect he has for James.

What a story Brandon Bussey has become, and what an honor it is for the Carolina Hurricanes to be the paper on which that story is written. After an incredible start to his NHL career, the 27-year-old has inked a deal to stay in Carolina for the coming years. …but how does it stack up to other goaltender contracts in the NHL?

On Monday, the Hurricanes signed Bussey to a three-year extension worth $5.7 million, with an average annual value of $1.9 million, including a 10-team no-trade clause for the final year.

In addition to the contract, the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation also donated $10K to the Autism Society of North Carolina. Busey, who has been a supporter of autism in sports since before the beginning of his professional career, has worn the goalie mask specifically to pay tribute to his younger brother, Dylan, who has non-verbal autism. This season’s mask features puzzle pieces and rainbow butterflies as well as Dylan’s initials.

Brandon Bussey vs. the World

Considering Bussey’s play, ranking second in high-danger save percentage (.869) and posting a 23-3-1 record this season, $1.9 million per year is remarkably low.

To draw comparisons with Ilya Sorokin, the league’s top dog in high-danger save percentage this season – who had similar numbers to Bussey in his early years – signed a three-year contract in September 2021. The annual price tag came in at $2M, which was a bit high cost. However, this was before the salary cap increased, which began in the 2022–23 season and increased rapidly in 2024–25. In 2023, the New York Islanders star goaltender signed an eight-year extension worth $8.25M.

Meanwhile, the current price tags for both of Busey’s Hurricanes teammates – Pyotr Kochetkov and Frederik Andersen – are $2M and $2.75M annually, respectively.

Other notable comparisons are the San Jose Sharks tandem, which Bussey faced in his NHL debut. Yaroslav Askarov, who signed his first extension in 2024 (before the cap increase), is on a two-year contract worth $2M annually. Additionally, Alex Nedeljkovic, who signed a two-year deal through 2024, makes $2.5M per year.

While Bussey’s sample size is quite small, having only played 27 games in his career, if he continues to have similar results, he could go down as one of the greatest signings of the decade.
