Crystal Palace defender JD Canavut has revealed why joining the Eagles despite widespread doubt is worth it, as the 19-year-old has established himself in the Premier League following the departure of Marc Guhi.
Talking to Foot MercatoCanavot explained how the guarantee of playing time and Oliver Glasner’s project convinced him to make the move.
Canavot has been speaking about life at Crystal Palace as he begins to establish himself as Marc Guhi’s replacement at Selhurst Park.
He joined the Eagles from Toulouse, France in September. For approximately €23m. At the time he was seen as a replacement for Marc Guhy, who was heavily linked with an exit the previous summer.
That exit did not occur until the January transfer window, when the England international joined Manchester City. His departure opened the door for Canavot, who has now played every minute of Palace’s last three Premier League games. This included a standout performance in the 3–1 win over Tottenham.
Why did Crystal Palace appeal to Canvote?
The move to Crystal Palace was not the path many expected for the defender. In fact, when this happened, some people questioned this step. However, the 19-year-old did not listen to him.
“The project presented to me was very simple: you would play from the first season, He said.
“I was told I would get playing time, and we are talking about a club that has produced players like Olise, Eze and other young talents in recent years.
“Naturally, it appealed to me. I also talked to coach Glasner: a top coach. He had done some great things with his previous clubs, especially in Frankfurt where he won the Europa League. For me, everything looked good.
“I spent a year at Toulouse and then went straight to the Premier League. For some people, it may seem an illogical choice, because they would have gone to Germany, a league that is good for French players and youngsters. But the Premier League is what I wanted.”
Learning from Guhi and studying Saliba
Guhi’s departure in January created an immediate opportunity for Canavot, but also significant pressure. The former Palace captain led the club to its first major trophy. He also established himself at the club as one of the league’s most reliable centre-backs.
Guéhi was very willing to offer his advice to the man who is seen as his replacement, something Canavot appreciates.
“Mark is a top player. He’s incredibly good,” He added.
“He talked to me a lot, he gave me advice because we are both central defenders. He is the defender I look up to the most along with William Saliba. They are the ones who have the same style as me.”
Canavot has started each of Palace’s last three league games since Guhi’s exit. The defender has completed the full 90 minutes on every occasion.
He is not being asked to replace his predecessor overnight, but the responsibility he is already taking on suggests Crystal Palace’s long-term plan is quietly taking shape.
Despite his young age, there is a lot of promise already displayed and Eagles fans have another player to look forward to.
