Carter Yakemchuk scores season-defining win in NHL debut

The Carter Yakemchuk era officially began last night! Talk about a great start. Yakemchuk played 12:46, assisted on the first goal of the game and scored the next goal as the Senators won 3–2 against the Red Wings. Let’s dive into the details of Carter Yakemchuk and the Senators’ incredible back-to-back wins!

Yakemchuk’s strong start

Just a week ago, I wrote about Yakemchuk’s progress in the AHL this season. For the most part, it has been a successful year, with Yakemchuk now having 10 goals and 36 points in 50 games. The downside is that he was a team-worst -30. The following sentence was in my article: “It is unlikely that Yakemchuk will get his NHL opportunity this season.” The organization seemed committed to having him play a full season in the AHL. Well, low and behold, the Senators have been ravaged by injuries, forcing Yakemchuk into the lineup for his first NHL game in the middle of a playoff push against a rival team. No pressure, right?

The credit for this goes to Travis Green. He made sure not to overshadow Yakemchuk or fellow rookie Jorian Donovan. Donovan only played 4:42, which makes sense when you consider that not only was this his first NHL game, but he had been out the last few weeks in Belleville due to injury.

Meanwhile, Yakemchuk played 21 shifts. 1:22 of that came on the power play, where he noted his penchant for assists between the legs. At 5 on 5, 50% of his shifts began in the offensive zone. For comparison, here are the other D-men offensive zones starting at 5 p.m. last night:

  • cleven: 29%
  • when: 24%
  • spence: 18%
  • mat fire: 0%

Kleven and Zub were given penalties of over 5 minutes. Yakemchuk was not used on the penalty kill. In terms of setting a young offensive D-man up for success, this is exactly how to do it. From there, of course, it was up to Yakemchuk to play well, and he certainly did that.

Best senator ever back to back?

I will not pretend to know each sense one by one. This is what I know. This was quite challenging as the Senators played both games on the road. To make matters worse, they played both games without their best defender Jake Sanderson. However, it doesn’t end here!

In their win against Rangers, he played the second half of the game with only four defenders. They lost their new number one, Thomas Chabot, at the end of the first leg. Then they lost Lassie Thomson in the second. Despite this, he only allowed 10 shots in the entire game.

In the second game last night in Detroit, they were now without Sanderson, Chabot, Jensen, Gilbert and Thompson on the back-end. Donovan played less than five minutes, leaving Cleven as their only regular left-shot D-man. They found a way to win 3–2, giving them an incredible 2–0 record in one of the greatest back-to-backs in team history.

Linus Ullmark stands tall

Let’s face it, given how the cards were stacked against them, the Senators needed Ullmark to have a great game. That’s exactly what he did last night. He saved 33 of the 35 shots he faced, including some incredible saves late to preserve a one-goal lead. This is the most saves Ullmark has made in a game all season.

It feels as if their struggle is now behind them. Since returning from his leave of absence in late January, Ullmark has gone 9-2-2 with a .902 SV%. This is by no means a typical SV%, but it is important to note that the Senators limit shots better than any team in the NHL. His 2.31 GAA during that time ranked fifth-best among all goaltenders with at least 10 games played. If he can provide that type of goaltending, the Senators have a great chance to get back to the playoffs for the second year in a row.

The Senators can’t enjoy back-to-back spectacular victories much longer. They play another big game tomorrow night at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Why did Wendell Carter Jr. discuss the injury report late vs. Hornets?

The Orlando Magic will be without center Wendell Carter Jr. on Thursday night after he was sidelined with a mild left rib injury ahead of their game against the Charlotte Hornets.

Orlando (38-30) announced an update on its latest injury report on Thursday afternoon, giving Carter Jr. a late opportunity as the team prepares for tipoff at 7:00 p.m. ET on NBA TV. His absence adds to an already lengthy injury list as the Magic face major rotation losses heading into the season.

Carter Jr. last appeared in a 113-108 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, where he recorded 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal in 29 minutes. He made 3 of 9 shots from the field and converted 5 of 6 free throw attempts in the contest.

The 26-year-old has been a consistent presence for Orlando throughout the season. In 65 games, he has averaged 11.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game, while shooting 50.6% from the field and 32.2% from three-point range in 29.6 minutes per contest. His interior presence and rebounding have played a vital role in the Magic’s frontcourt stability.

The absence of Carter Jr. further diminishes Orlando’s depth in the frontcourt. The team’s injury report also lists Anthony Black (left lateral abdominal strain), Jonathan Isaac (left knee sprain) and Franz Wagner (left high ankle sprain/injury management) out. With several starters and rotation players sidelined, Orlando will be forced to rely on their remaining available personnel to fill key minutes.

Magical way to stabilize the standings without Wendell Carter Jr. vs. Hornets

The Magic entered Thursday’s contest looking to stop a two-game losing streak and reclaim a spot in the Eastern Conference standings. Orlando drops to the sixth seed and is one game behind the Toronto Raptors (39-29) for fifth place. The team is also 3.5 games behind the Cleveland Cavaliers (42-27) in the race for the fourth seed.

Charlotte (35-34) presents a competitive challenge as it continues to dominate the Eastern Conference standings. With both teams fighting for a postseason berth, availability and depth could prove decisive.

Following the matchup against the Hornets, Orlando will return home to begin a two-game homestand. That streak begins Saturday night against the Los Angeles Lakers (44-25), who are on a seven-game winning streak.

As the regular season enters its final stretch, the Magic’s ability to manage injuries while maintaining consistency will continue to be important. Carter Jr.’s late start underscores the challenges facing Orlando as it looks to stabilize its rotation and stay within reach of a higher seed in the Eastern Conference.

Carter Jensen

(Carter Yakemchuk)

Senators’ top prospect Carter Yakemchuk is being investigated

With the Senators off tonight, now is a good time to take a look at the world of Senators prospects. Today’s focus will be on one possibility in particular. In fact, he’s their best prospect. Let’s take a closer look at what’s going on with Carter Yakemchuk.

READ MORE: Senators score seven points to beat Sharks

Basics about Carter Yakemchuk

Yakemchuk is a 6’3″, 219 pound, right shot defenseman. The Senators drafted him 7th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft. Yakemchuk played four consecutive seasons in the WHL for the Calgary Hitmen before joining the AHL this year.

Here were my pre-draft notes on Yekemchuk, which still more or less remain my thoughts on him:

Pros:The stats jump off the page – 30 goals, 71 points, 120 PIMS, 275 shots. Plays a very physical, cheap, dirty game. Ready to fight. great shot. Great hands – can hang legitimately.

Shortcoming:The first few steps are slow. Questionable defensive play – Appears to lack urgency in his own zone at times, sometimes tries to do too much with the puck or make special plays.

ground level:Playing on such a bad team, they asked him to do everything, so I’m choosing to believe that some of his defensive lapses are because of that. He’s huge, he’s low, he’s got great hands. He fits into any team’s blueline, as long as he can find the defensive side.

Carter Yakemchuk by the numbers

Yakemchuk’s statistics with the Belleville Senators this season are as follows:

  • 47 games, 9 goals, 35 points, 26 PIM

Yakemchuk was recently named AHL Player of the Week. He recorded six assists in two games. In the game before that, he scored a goal and also added an assist.

Among AHL defensemen, Yakemchuk is ninth in both goals and points. Among AHL rookies, he ranks seventh in points. The downside is that his -29 is worst in the AHL.

final thoughts

When you look at how Yakemchuk records his points, this is not a quiet, secondary assist-getting player. He has great plays to set up his teammates. From a shooting perspective, he can absolutely shred the puck. At the beginning of the year, his production was primarily on the power play – through his first 27 games, he scored 18 points. 12 of them were accompanied by additional men. Since then he has scored 17 points in his last 20 games. Only three of them have come in the power play.

Given his size and style of play, I have no doubts about his ability to stick around physically. I’m sure as he gets more comfortable, there will be more toughness at the professional level. The question is, can he skate and defend well at the next level? It is unlikely that Yakemchuk will get his NHL opportunity this season. Next season, however, there is a good chance that Nick Jensen is no longer with the team. This opens up a space on the right side. It is up to Yakemchuk to not only finish this season strong, but prove early next year that he is a better skater and defensive player to earn his chance as a full-time NHL player.

Patience will always be necessary with Yakemchuk. Considering how strong their defensive depth is at the moment, what a luxury it is for the Senators to not have to rush their top prospect into the NHL. Brent Burns makes a good comparison. Burns didn’t become a top-four D-man until he was 22. Yakemchuk is just 20 years old.

Wendell Carter Jr. posters Cooper flag for game-winner vs. Mavericks

The Orlando Magic found themselves in a very tight matchup against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night and in the end Orlando came out victorious. There may have been some magical moments, none of which were more particularly notable than Jalen Suggs’ ridiculously improbable made basket off a PJ Washington deflection. But Wendell Carter Jr. did his best to outdo his teammate by leading Orlando to victory with a memorable poster jam.

The Magic took a brave defensive stance with less than 10 seconds left, they went out in transition in half, and refused to call a timeout to set up the Mavericks defensively. Suggs stepped up the pace against Klay Thompson and got into two-man action with Carter. The Mavs then sacked Suggs and relieved Carter of the role man position. Every Mavs defender came up late, including Cooper Flagg, who tried to deny Carter’s slam – only to end up being put into a poster.

Magic finished taking Carter’s dunk led to a 115–114 victory over the Mavericks, as Dallas could not respond with a game-winner of their own.

The Magic have struggled with injuries this season, with Suggs not getting enough of his game and Franz Wagner still out indefinitely with an ankle problem. Still, Orlando remains within striking distance of the sixth and final outright playoff spot in the East, as this latest win over the Mavs brings them to 33-28 on the season, or half a game behind the Philadelphia 76ers.

The competition for the sixth place is going to become even more intense. The Charlotte Hornets are destroying every team in their path, the Atlanta Hawks are hitting their stride, and the Miami Heat can always be counted on to compete until the end.

(Scottie Barnes)

Vince Carter shouts out Scotty Barnes amid star’s solid season

Vince Carter understands the challenges that come with being the face of Canadian basketball. The Toronto Raptors will never leave hockey behind and are often out of the spotlight within the NBA landscape, so it takes a certain type of player to lead the franchise. The 2024 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee believes Scotty Barnes is occupying that role brilliantly this season.

Although Brandon Ingram is the team’s top scorer, the No. 4 is still widely considered the cornerstone of the Raptors. Carter praised his ability to remain impressive while also adjusting to fellow game-changers.

“I want to give Scottie his flowers,” he told reporters in Toronto before Tuesday night’s showdown with the New York Knicks, according to TSN’s Josh Levenberg. “This was his team for a long time. He was willing to make sacrifices for the good of BI coming in and his own survival. And look what he did. He still became an All-Star. He also brought another All-Star with him… So, it’s just a sacrifice for the good of the team. Yes, the numbers went down, but the accolades are coming your way now.”

Barnes has yet to ascend to true superstardom, with his 29.1 shooting percentage from 3-point range serving as a hindrance in such a situation, but he’s still an undeniable difference-maker on one of the breakout teams this season. The 24-year-old forward is averaging 19.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.4 steals while shooting a career-high 50.1 percent from the field. He’s also a Defensive Player of the Year candidate, having proven himself to be a two-way force in the Great White North.

Scottie Barnes now has to figure out how he can lead the Raptors (35-25) into the next stage of their development. The team is currently two games behind the Cleveland Cavaliers for fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Toronto will have a steep hill to climb if it draws the Cavs, Knicks or Boston Celtics in the early rounds of the playoffs (the latter is unlikely to face the first-place Detroit Pistons), but this group could still be dangerous.

The former No. 4 overall draft pick is filling the Raptors with needed intensity. If he can continue to step up and lead, Toronto will have a tough competition in the 2026 postseason. Vince Carter will be watching closely.

Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady reveal the mindset behind Bills Night collaboration

The budding partnership between the Toronto Raptors and Buffalo Bills continues. During the 2025 season, the Raptors expressed their support for the Bills on social media. Now, both teams are taking the next step as Toronto hosts Bills Night 2 this Tuesday.

The architects behind this collaboration are two former Raptors players: Hall of Famer Vince Carter and his cousin Tracy McGrady. During the event, Carter and McGrady talked about the rationale behind the collaboration.

According to Josh Levenberg, he said, “Why not bring the two sports together to support each other rather than against each other?”

Carter says the Bills and Raptors fan bases are very similar in their passion for supporting their home teams. Both Toronto and Buffalo have some of the most passionate fan bases, even earning their own nicknames (Jurassic Park for Toronto, Bills Mafia for Buffalo).

“Seeing what Jurassic Park is like, especially when they’re on the road during the playoffs and things like that. Seeing what the Bills Mafia is, if you’ve never had that opportunity, I recommend it, if you’re not a part of it, just to see it. It’s just something special and (we want) both sides to collaborate and do it together.”

How are Carter and McGrady tied to the Bills? In 2024, the two Raptors alumni, along with Toronto FC forward Joey Altidore, were part of a private equity group that purchased a minority stake of the team. Both Carter and McGrady are now part-owners of the Bills, prompting this collaboration.

The relationship between Toronto and the Bills goes back even further. From 2008 to 2013, the Bills played home games in Toronto as part of a series. Discussions have resurfaced about the Bills playing home games in Toronto following the MLSE partnership between the Bills and Raptors, but Buffalo is focused on opening their new stadium first.

The Raptors lost to the New York Knicks 111-95 on Tuesday night. Brandon Ingram led the Raptors with 31 points, while Immanuel Quickley had a double-double of 13 points and 12 assists against his former team.

Wendell Carter Jr. reveals secret of Orlando’s tie after win against LA

Wendell Carter Jr. made a decisive play Tuesday night, scoring the game-winning basket to give the Orlando Magic a 110-109 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. After the win, Carter pointed to one word – “aggressive” – as the key to Orlando reaching another level offensively.

Carter finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds and two assists in 36 minutes. He made 9 of 13 shots from the field and added two free throws, controlling the paint throughout the contest before getting a late putback that sealed the victory.

After the game, Carter credited his teammates for encouraging him to maintain a tenacious mindset.

“Honestly, I give my teammates a lot of credit. You know, the guys we started with, Des, P, AB, Jay Suggs, we got there, Tristan, they all encourage me. They tell me when I’m aggressive, it takes our team to a new level on the offensive end.”

He detailed how this approach affects the group beyond the box score.

“Because I do a lot of things that don’t show up in this box score night in and night out. But they say offensively when I’m aggressive it opens up another chapter for this team. So I definitely give them a lot of credit. But at the same time, processing the game, slowing it down a little bit mentally, but still playing at a fast, fast pace.”

The Magic relied on that interior presence against Los Angeles, especially in the fourth quarter. Orlando improved to 31–26 with the win and finished their four-game Western Conference road trip with consecutive wins over both Los Angeles teams.

Carter’s production this season reflects a steady role within Orlando’s rotation. In his sixth year with the franchise, the 26-year-old center has averaged 11.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in 54 appearances. He is shooting 48.7% from the field, 32.2% from 3-point range and a career-high 80.1% from the free-throw line, while logging 29.6 minutes per contest.

While Carter’s game-winning effort highlighted his night, the overarching theme of aggression has come up repeatedly in Orlando’s recent surge. Teammates have emphasized that when Carter strikes decisively, whether it’s finishing at the rim, stepping into mid-range looks, or crashing the glass, it creates additional spacing and rhythm for the offense.

The Magic also got another standout performance from Paolo Banchero, who recorded 36 points, 10 rebounds and six assists against the Lakers. Orlando’s ability to generate balanced contributions on both the perimeter and interior has provided momentum entering the final stretch of the regular season.

With the road trip complete, Orlando returns home to begin a four-game homestand starting Thursday against the Houston Rockets (35-21) at 7:30 p.m. ET on Prime Video. As the Magic attempt to solidify their position in the Eastern Conference, Carter’s emphasis on controlled aggression may remain a central factor in maintaining their upward trajectory.

All-Star Weekend was a homecoming for Spurs rookie Carter Bryant

The San Antonio Spurs were well represented at All-Star Weekend. Victor Wembanyama was voted as the starter for the All-Star Game. Stephen Castle and Dylan Harper competed in the Rising Stars competition, with Harper also being a part of the returning Shooting Stars event. And rookie Carter Bryant, who has recently started playing regularly with the Spurs, was one of the headliners of the slam dunk contest.

Bryant was selected late as a replacement for the Rising Stars Tournament due to an injury to Memphis Grizzlies rookie Cedric Coward. He was impressive during his first All-Star Weekend appearance, showing some of the defensive ability that the Spurs knew they were getting when they drafted him.

In the first Rising Stars game as part of Team Vince, Bryant finished with four points, one rebound and one blocked shot in a little over five minutes. In the second game, as Team Vince won the Rising Stars championship, Bryant finished with five points, one rebound and one steal, while shooting a perfect 2-of-2, including 1-of-1 from 3-point range.

For Bryant, being able to participate in All-Star Weekend as a rookie was a testament to the hard work he has put in since being drafted.

“On my side, I feel like the work I’ve put in is being seen and my teammates have held me to a standard that’s allowed me to perform a certain way,” Bryant told ClutchPoints in an exclusive interview. “Obviously with injuries, it took something for that to happen, but I’m fortunate enough to be in a position where I’ve performed well enough this season, whether it’s the last few games, to get a chance to play in the Rising Stars game. It’s an honor.”

Not only was Carter Bryant given the opportunity to participate in the NBA’s premier weekend, but it was a homecoming for the Spurs rookie. His father D’Sean has been a longtime prominent figure in the Southern California basketball scene, having played in college at Long Beach State before moving into coaching high school basketball.

Bryant grew up in Southern California and played his senior year of high school at local powerhouse Corona Centennial. He also played for his father at Fountain Valley and Sage Hill, two other local high schools. One of the greatest things for him about attending All-Star Weekend was the presence of his family.

Bryant said, “Growing up, All-Star Weekend is everything to a kid, especially when you love the game. The best players in basketball get together and make things happen.” “But for it to be in my hometown, and to be a part of something I’ve always dreamed of, I’m so happy. Just being able to be with my family, being able to have my loved ones supporting me, it means everything.”

And as a local kid, it was former Los Angeles Lakers superstar, the late Kobe Bryant, who provided him with his favorite All-Star memory.

Bryant said, “I would say the one that really stood out was Kobe’s last All-Star Game. Being a Southern California kid, being a kid growing up with Kobe, when he got to the All-Star Game in Toronto last year.” “That whole weekend in general, from the dunk contest to the All-Star Game, having the iconic moments in that whole thing, it was dope.”

The Rising Stars Game was not the only event Carter Bryant attended during All-Star Weekend. He was also selected for the Slam Dunk Contest. He made it to the final round of the competition where he ultimately lost to Keshad Johnson of the Miami Heat.

Although Bryant did not win the dunk contest, he had a good performance overall. He explained how the event has served as a rising party for young players in the past. As he begins his rookie year with the Spurs, he feels like his All-Star Weekend participation could be a springboard for his own career.

“I think the one thing that’s been missing over the years is the swagger and confidence that a lot of the great guys had that originally did it. … It was kind of a coming out party for a lot of guys. A lot of young guys came in, they were really young players, but they wanted to do the dunk contest,” Bryant said, “kind of bringing that energy back to the dunk contest, having confidence in myself that I’m confident in the work that I do. I have a God-given ability because of my athletic talent and being able to display it.”

It was just before the All-Star break when Bryant got his first real opportunity in the Spurs rotation. Selected 14th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, he played consistently during the first few months of the regular season, but did not receive consistent playing time until February.

In the six games played just before the break, he scored in double figures three times, including a career-high 16 points in a blowout win against the Los Angeles Lakers. During that time, Bryant showed signs of being a reliable 3-point shooter. He shot a combined 44 percent from distance, a huge increase from his season average of 32.9 percent.

As far as what it takes to succeed in the NBA, one thing he has learned is patience.

Bryant said, “Patience is everything. I would say that’s the biggest thing I’ve learned. Understanding that not everything is going to be on your terms, what a great lesson that’s been.” “Having good vets and a great coaching staff, being able to sit down with a lot of the guys on the coaching staff… even in the video room, talking to the training staff about how to properly take care of my body. They’ve seen guys who have done this for a long time and had a chance to play 20 years.”

Bryant added, “That’s the ultimate goal, to play a long time and be a great player.” “Being able to pick those brains and not dwell in those moments when you feel like you can’t do anything right.”

But in addition to his offensive abilities, the defensive end of the court has been an area where Bryant has shined in his rookie season. When it comes to the Spurs’ regular rotation players, Bryant is top-10 on the team in defensive rating, according to Statmuse.

Offense in the NBA sometimes comes and goes, and the number of shots and opportunities players get often varies from game to game. But the defensive end of the court, is something that cannot be compromised. Defensively the effort and energy must always be there, no matter how many shots the player attempts.

This is a part of Bryant’s game that he is 100 percent confident he can make an immediate impact on.

Bryant said, “I don’t think you can put anybody in front of me that I can’t compete with. I embrace the competition. That’s what I grew up on. I grew up watching Kobe. I grew up watching those guys attack each other every night.” “When I grew up watching NBA basketball there were no buddy-buddy guys. It’s just the mentality, I’m trying to bring the understanding that every night is an opportunity to show what you’re made of.”

At the time of the All-Star break, the Spurs were in second place in the Western Conference standings, and were being mentioned among potential title contenders. As it stands, they are 40-16 in the West, have won eight straight games and are only two and a half games behind the No. 1 seeded Oklahoma City Thunder.

Players always have goals they want to achieve during the season, especially young players who are experiencing the NBA for the first time. But not Bryant. For him, all personal things will come in time. Right now, it is about maximizing his potential to help the team win.

Bryant said, “Making the playoffs, and with the talent that we have and the team that we have, we’re capable of making the finals. I think we’re there. I think we have a lot of guys that really work to their potential, and I think we have a good balance of vets and young guys.” “We all go to work understanding what the chances are for us as a team. I think that’s the thing for me, I’m not worried about any individual things.”

Bryant added, “Things like this come with time and come with winning.” “Winning is the first priority.”

Jamahl Mosley says Jevon Carter is ‘perfect’ fit for Orlando

The Orlando Magic turned in a franchise-record shooting performance Thursday night, but it was veteran guard Javon Carter who received strong praise from head coach Jamahl Mosley after a 131-94 win over the Sacramento Kings.

Orlando drained 27 3-pointers in the win, setting a new franchise mark. Carter, playing in his second game since signing with the team after the trade deadline more than two weeks ago, produced his best performance in a Magic uniform. The 30-year-old finished with 14 points, four assists, three rebounds and one steal in 23 minutes off the bench. He made 5 of 8 shots from the field, 3 of 5 from 3-point range and added one free throw, leading to a team-high plus-34 rating.

Carter joined Orlando after being waived by the Chicago Bulls in early February. The Magic immediately added the veteran guard, valuing his defensive intensity and experience.

Mosley said Carter’s impact was immediate.

“He’s about the right things. He’s about winning, he’s about the team, he’s about playing the right way and you saw that as soon as he stepped on the court, the whole court got up, talking to the crowd, getting people in the right spots, making shots with confidence,” Mosley said.

“But still, he’s about all the right things. He’s about winning, he’s about toughness. He fits perfectly with what we do here with the Magic — hard-nosed defense, creating our own offense on the other end.”

Paolo Banchero highlights Javon Carter’s energy in Magic’s historic win

Star forward Paolo Banchero, who led Orlando with 30 points, six assists, five rebounds, one steal and one block, echoed that sentiment. Banchero shot 10 of 21 from the field, 5 of 7 from beyond the arc and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line in 32 minutes.

“Just his energy — his energy, his voice, obviously his play, he’s active on defense, shot maker on offense, he tries to make the right play as a point guard,” Banchero said. “I think he fits really well into what we do… He’s a guy who has been in the league [for] She has a great attitude in a little while and is encouraging her to continue using her voice.”

Carter credited the team’s historic shooting night to unselfish play.

“Just getting down the slope, being unselfish, getting the ball out of it, being aggressive, you know what I’m saying, just taking shots out there. [and] Not really thinking about it, ignoring them. And just playing together,” Carter said.

He described the outing as the result of preparation and work.

“It was fun, I take pride in hard work, you know, hard work always pays off. That’s a motto I live by. You know it was definitely a lot of fun to be out there with the guys, really, getting back into the swing of things.”

With the win, Orlando improved to 29–25, and moved within a half game of the sixth-seeded Philadelphia 76ers (30–25) in the Eastern Conference. The Magic continue their West Coast road trip against the Phoenix Suns (32-24) on Saturday at 5:00 PM ET on NBA TV. Carter’s early impact adds another layer of depth as the playoff race heats up.

Spurs’ Carter Bryant falls short in NBA dunk contest despite perfect 50 slams

When the San Antonio Spurs selected Carter Bryant with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, the consensus was that he was a raw prospect who would need at least a few years to develop before becoming a reliable contributor. The organization took the risk, in part, because of his attractive athletic talent. This feature was put on display during the 2026 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

Bryant stunned fans inside the Los Angeles Clippers’ Intuit Dome on All-Star Saturday and scored 50 across the board after an East Bay slam in the second period. The 20-year-old forward fell short in the finals against Miami Heat’s Keshad Johnson, but still put in a great performance in his native California.

Bryant jumped off the floor and performed what might have been the best dunk of the night. Unfortunately, he missed a sure chance of winning the competition and was forced to settle for second place. The former Arizona talent can still take great pride in posting a perfect score.

Bryant still has a lot to learn, but he’s already making remarkable progress in his first NBA season. The 2024 McDonald’s All-American is enjoying a promising February, averaging 9.0 points and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 44.0 percent from 3-point range in just 16.7 minutes per contest. One can only learn a lot from a six-game sample size, but the young player is quickly earning the trust of his teammates and the coaching staff.

He should also earn more fans after his viral jam. Keep an eye on Carter Bryant.
