He and Derrick White joined the latest WWE RAW card at the TD Garden on Monday. When he was introduced during the break, the crowd greeted him enthusiastically.

Mazzulla’s experience became even more memorable when Triple H handed him a customized championship belt with the Celtics logo.

The Celtics lost 102-92 to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, ending their four-game winning streak. Perhaps this was the reason Majulla didn’t seem too thrilled with Triple H’s gift.

However, Mazzulla also often looks the same – win or lose – so for all we know, he enjoyed it. Or maybe he’s just playing his heel role.

Undoubtedly, Derrick Rose became a true hometown hero during his NBA career. He grew up in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, attended Simeon Academy, and played for his hometown Chicago Bulls.

His accolades include winning 2009 NBA Rookie of the Year and 2011 NBA MVP. Additionally, Rose helped reignite excitement over the Bulls in the post-Michael Jordan era. Those heroics, among others, were given due respect during their jersey retirement ceremonies at the United Center on January 24.

One of the historians of his career was Chicago-based basketball journalist and cultural critic Robert “Scoop” Jackson. He has come out with a new book titled Derrick Rose: The Poohprint, According to Bruce Goodwin II of Cassius Life, published by Assoline.

In the book, Jackson works with Rose to share candid stories through text and photographs that document her life.

In an exclusive interview with ClutchPoints, Jackson said he spoke at the Nike Basketball Camp in Chicago. He was there with the late Temple coach John Cheney. At the time, Rose was at Simeon Academy.

Jackson had no idea that his words would have such a deep impact on Rose.

“I saw him in seventh grade,” Jackson said. So then I came to know about him. I didn’t know Derrick probably until his junior year at Simeon, and I talk about it a little bit in the book, I think it was on the author’s page or something, where Nike had John Chaney and I come to Chicago to talk to three or four high school basketball teams, and Simeon was one of those teams.

“So we talked to them, and that’s when I met Derrick face to face, and the rest of the team, you know, Dap’s game, you know, and all that and all that, and that’s the thing, I’d say I knew him. Probably four years before that, but I knew him.”

The scoop and derrick come full circle.

Jackson, who co-founded SLAM Magazine, was working for ESPN during Rose’s rookie year with Chicago in 2009. They reconnected for the first time since that initial meeting and picked up where they left off.

Jackson said, “So it happened years later, because he’s a rookie with the Bulls, ESPN, you know, he was assigned to do a story on Derrick Rose because he had a rookie season, and it was going into the playoffs.”

“The first thing he says to me is man, I was looking forward to it because I remember every word you said when you came, when you spoke, when you and Coach Cheney talked to us, when I was like a junior, when I was a senior, and I remember every word you said.”

“I was like, wow. The Boston Celtics, even before Jayson Tatum’s long absence due to an Achilles rupture, were already a formidable team to contend with, thanks to the consistent two-way excellence of both Jaylen Brown and Derrick White. White’s talent may not match the box score, but he is the quintessential winning player. He does everything the Celtics need to play winning basketball, and his impact was evident once again on Monday night.

It may have been Brown who scored 41 points on 10-20 shooting from the field and 19-21 from the charity stripe against the Phoenix Suns, but it was White who held the team together on the defensive end. Celtics star Derrick White is a coach’s dream

White is respected among coaches and analytics fans, as he does everything a team wants from a guard who plays heavy minutes. He can defend big players, he can attack them from beyond the arc, and he’s unselfish at both ends of the court, willing to sacrifice his body for the right play.

The Celtics star also received major praise from Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson, who said he is a top-five player in the NBA. And considering how impactful that can be, there really is an argument to be made for it.

Derrick White is listed as probable for Saturday night’s matchup as the Boston Celtics prepare to face the Washington Wizards.

Boston released their latest injury report ahead of Saturday’s 6:00 p.m. ET tipoff, listing White as probable with a right knee injury. The update comes as the Celtics look to snap a two-game losing streak and regain momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season after a 104-102 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night.

White last appeared in Boston’s 125-116 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday, delivering one of his strongest performances of the season. The veteran guard recorded 34 points, seven assists, five rebounds and one block while shooting 11 of 22 from the field. He also converted 9 of 11 free throws and completed 3 of 11 from three-point range in 40 minutes.

The 31-year-old has played a major role in Boston’s backcourt all season long. In 63 appearances, White averaged a career-high 17.5 points, as well as 5.7 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game. He is also posting a career-best 1.2 steals per contest while logging 34.3 minutes per game.

While his shooting numbers are 39.4% from the field and 32.7% from three-point range, White continues to be a valuable two-way contributor for the Celtics team, which currently holds a 43-23 record.

Celtics injury report reveals Derrick White’s status ahead of Wizards matchup

Boston’s injury report includes White as well as several additional players:

• Baylor Scheierman – potential (sprained right ankle)
• John Tonje – Suspicious (G League Two-Way)
• Nikola Vucevic – Outside (right ring finger fracture)
• Derrick White – potential (injury in right knee)

The Celtics enter Saturday’s contest with the goal of stabilizing after recent losses by maintaining their position near the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

Jayson Tatum is currently listed as questionable on the injury report for the Thunder matchup due to ongoing Achilles injury management. Tatum has played in three games since returning from the Achilles tear he suffered in last year’s playoffs, and so far has performed about as well as fans have expected. Some have theorized that Boston may have kept him out of Thunder games to avoid playing against Lou Dort, who has gained a reputation for injuring opposing star players.

Peyton Pritchard is listed as probable for Boston due to neck spasms after missing his last game against the San Antonio Spurs, while Derrick White is considered questionable with a right knee injury.

Meanwhile, for the Thunder, Isaiah Hartenstein will be out of the lineup with a left calf injury, with Jalen Williams also out with a strained right hamstring.

The Celtics are currently ranked number two in the Eastern Conference, and have been playing well since Tatum’s return last week. In their last game against the Spurs, Boston saw star Jaylen Brown controversially ejected in the first half, and despite ultimately putting up a valiant effort, they ran out of gas during the game.

Winds in the Eastern Conference may begin to blow in a different direction. Throughout the season, the Detroit Pistons have reigned supreme in the Eastern Conference. But the Boston Celtics are going after them with speed and force. On Sunday, the Celtics defeated another former contender, the Cleveland Cavaliers, 109–98 to move to 43–21 on the season and fall just 2.5 games behind the Pistons in the standings.

The Celtics may be peaking at the right time, and what makes this season so outstanding for everyone involved in the franchise is that they managed to hold down the fort and excel despite an injury to Jayson Tatum. Now that Tatum is back, the Celtics may be the favorites to come out of the Eastern Conference.

But as much fanfare as Tatum and Jaylen Brown attract for their continued excellence, the Celtics won’t go anywhere without the beating heart of Derrick White, who received such high praise Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson after his altercation on Sunday.

The Celtics’ Derrick White is a coach’s dream

Many fans were stunned when White was getting just a few more minutes than Tatum for Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics. But it made sense. He can fit into every lineup. He can defend multiple positions, and he enjoys doing the dirty work. And besides, he’s one of the best volume three-point shooters in the NBA.

“What people probably aren’t measuring is his defensive impact… Analytically I think it’s probably proven in different places that he’s that player and that’s how we treat him,” Atkinson said.

It’s been nine years since Tatum and Brown have been teammates since the 2017-18 campaign. They went on multiple playoff runs together, reached the NBA Finals twice and won a championship in 2024.

There has been much debate from media personalities over whether Boston should split the two, but the franchise has balked at keeping them together. So far, Tatum and Brown have kept the Celtics in serious contention. White agreed with this sentiment during his appearance on the White Noise Podcast on March 8.

“I think it’s just like the media is trying to start something. Now it’s like who’s the team, who’s 1A? I think they do a good job of not listening to it. I think obviously there are times when it’s annoying for them, but for me, it doesn’t matter to me. I don’t care. As long as we win, I don’t care who 1A and 1B are,” White said at 1:22. Jayson Tatum, how the Celtics played against the Cavaliers

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are back on the court together after returning from injury. The Celtics are now 2-0 since Tatum came back to beat the Cavaliers 109-98 on Sunday afternoon.

Five players scored in double figures for Boston in the win. Brown led the way with a stat line of 23 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. He shot 7 of 17 from the field, including 1 of 3 from beyond the arc, and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line. Tatum was next with 20 points and three rebounds, Peyton Pritchard had 18 points and seven assists, Baylor Scheierman had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Sam Hauser scored 15 points.

Boston improved to a 43–21 record on the season and finished second in the Eastern Conference standings. They are above the New York Knicks and Cavaliers while trailing the Detroit Pistons.

The Celtics will remain on the road and await their next matchup. They will face the San Antonio Spurs as tip-off takes place on March 10 at 8 PM ET.

Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies was once seen by many as the next face of the NBA. However, after a series of controversies and injuries and a few disappointing seasons overall for Memphis, the 26-year-old has been the subject of minimal trade interest despite his abundance of talent.

Now, his teammate Taj Gibson has come out in defense of Morant and compared the 26-year-old to none other than Derrick Rose.

“Yeah, I love everything about him. People don’t understand, when you play against him and you’re actually on the court you see how he commands his team, how they embrace each other, how they love to work hard. Being a point guard, you have to be a leader. Being a point guard, you have to play hard. And your teammates are inspired by that,” Gibson told All the Smoke. Said during his appearance on the podcast.

“The main thing I see between him and Derrick is athleticism, but also a desire to try to be great. Some players talk about being great, and do what they’ve got to do, but that young man is special,” he concluded.

Although Morant and prime Derrick Rose may have a lot in common when it comes to skill and athleticism, Rose was known as the model professional throughout his career. Rose overcame a series of injuries to continue his NBA career, and showed an elite mindset while transitioning into a rotational contributor.

Additionally, Rose has also had a much cleaner career than Morant, who has already been embroiled in several controversies. In March 2023, Morant appeared on Instagram Live at a Denver-area nightclub and briefly displayed a handgun on camera.

Just a few weeks later, on May 14, 2023, another video surfaced showing Morant again holding a firearm during an Instagram Live broadcast inside a vehicle. Commissioner Adam Silver ultimately imposed a 25-game suspension to begin the 2023–24 season.

This, along with other controversies and injuries, has undoubtedly played a role in the decline in the value of Morant’s stock, with the Grizzlies understood to be open to trade offers for the two-time All-Star.

You know, you’ve got a guy like Herb Jones who doesn’t ask the coach to draw up a play for him. He’s always aggressive. He sees that no one watches the defense, he’s proactive. Everybody knows him for that,” Murray explained. “But, you know, I think the more we hang out together, have fun and learn to translate each other, it could be really special.”

The Pelicans (15-42) are lottery favorites, but the development of their rookie duo has emerged as a real bright spot. Queen averaged 12.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists; Fears is averaging 13.3 points and 3.1 assists. Murray suggested that his statistics told only part of the story. What impressed him more is how he handled the inevitable ups and downs of an NBA rookie season, especially when the roles changed dramatically.

What has made the Boston Celtics such a strong team to face this season, despite the major roster overhaul last offseason with the absence of Jayson Tatum and the departures of Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford, has been the team’s consistent next-man-up mentality.

Earlier in the season, it was Josh Minot who stood out as a multi-positional defensive pest for the Celtics. There was a time when Jordan Walsh was turning everyone’s heads. Hugo Gonzalez is a spark-plug who experienced one of the most memorable clutch moments of the season for Boston.

But now, a different unknown player is moving to the Celtics in the form of Baylor Sheuerman. Sheuerman is emerging as a key guy for Boston, especially with the way he helps the team control the glass. On Tuesday night, in a blowout 97–81 win over the Phoenix Suns on the road, Scheuerman recorded another double-double, an 11-point, 11-rebound effort.

The Celtics have been dominant on the glass over the past month and Sheyerman has been a big reason for that. In fact, he now has three career point-rebound double-doubles, and all three have come within the last three weeks, as reported by Celtics Stats on X (formerly Twitter).

It certainly seems like the Celtics are producing quality contributors on the factory line, which is how they’ve gotten so many contributions from unexpected sources.

The Celtics have won nine of their last 10 games, and they now have the third-best record in the NBA despite Tatum’s absence. The great play of Jaylen Brown as well as the consistency of Derrick White and Peyton Pritchard have played a huge role in this, but head coach Joe Mazzulla has managed to squeeze a lot out of a core that wasn’t very inspiring early in the season.

To make matters better for the Celtics, Tatum is close to returning, which should lift the team even further.

“When we played Portland, at halftime we were talking about kicks and how we didn’t have to take extra dribbles,” Queen said. “The kicks are open, and they were pressuring us. I got the ball, took a dribble, then passed it to (Sadiq Bey), and he made a three. It was a good pass.”

In a league often obsessed with dunks and isolation scoring, Queen’s favorite play was a simple swing pass resulting in a three-pointer. It was a play born of a halftime adjustment. After an impressive 126-111 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night, Pelicans rookie Derrick Queen decided to give 17-year veteran DeAndre Jordan a taste of his own medicine. While Queen told jokes, Jordan had the last laugh on the court. With the Pelicans missing several key rotational pieces, head coach James Borrego turned to the 37-year-old center to lead the defense.

During NBA All-Star Weekend, one of the participants in the Rising Stars Game was New Orleans Pelicans rookie forward Derrick Queen. Queen is enjoying a strong season with the Pelicans as one of the top rookies in the NBA. The Pelicans almost didn’t get the opportunity to draft Derrick Queen, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Queen was part of a draft-day trade involving the Atlanta Hawks in which the Pelicans acquired the second lottery pick which they used to select the Maryland big man.

Trade also took place at a heavy cost. That cost the Pelicans their first-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, a draft that is shaping up to be one of the best in recent memory. The Pelicans are headed for a top-five pick in the upcoming draft. That selection will be conveyed to the Hawks, giving Atlanta a chance to nab a potentially franchise-changing talent in a deep draft pool.

But if Queens continues its current trajectory, perhaps the gamble was worth it for Pelican. He has appeared in 55 games, including 43 starts, at a rate of just 26 minutes per game. He averaged 12.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.0 steals on 49.1 percent shooting from the field, 27.8 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 77.7 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

While the Pelicans have had some disappointing seasons recently, they appear to have two solid cornerstones in Queens and fellow rookie Jeremiah Fears. Fears was also selected to compete in the Rising Stars competition.

Queen had nine points on 3-of-8 shooting, six rebounds and two assists. Embiid, on the other hand, had a game-high 40 points on 13-of-27 shooting, 11 points, four assists and two blocks.

The Pelicans and Mavericks have met three times this season, with Davis scoring only once and scoring a game-high 35 points on 16 of 28 shooting. He also grabbed 17 rebounds and two assists. Queen was not too weak with 19 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals.

The Atlanta Hawks selected Queen, who starred for Maryland, with the 13th overall pick. He was traded to the Pelicans on draft day in exchange for Asa Newell and a first-round pick.

Chicago native Matas Buzzelis continues to move forward. The second-year guard for the Chicago Bulls participated in the Rising Stars Game on Friday to kick off NBA All-Star Weekend. In the process, Bouzelis has long-term All-Star aspirations.

Rose had his jersey retired after the Bulls’ game against the Boston Celtics on January 24. He is one of four other Chicago players to receive this honor. The others were Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Jerry Sloan and Bob Love.

Currently, Bouzelis is at a point where he is making his mark. Of course, he’s still adjusting to a new dynamic after the Bulls traded seven players during the trade deadline. Those players included Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu and Nikola Vucevic, all of whom played important roles in mentoring Buzzellis in his freshman year.

Right now, the Bulls are 24-31 and in the midst of a six-game losing streak. Also, they have lost 9 of their last 10 matches.

Currently, Bouzelis is averaging 15.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Buzzellis attended Hinsdale Central High School in the Chicago suburb of Hinsdale for his freshman and sophomore years.

Rose is a native of Englewood. NBA All-Star Weekend will conclude with the All-Star Game on Sunday.
