Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed on Thursday.

Jacob Dobbs finds ways to win easily, including his strong effort in a 2-1 win on Thursday night. The win was his 24th win of the year, more than veteran netminder Patrick Roy had in his rookie season. This was also an important game when discussing Montreal’s playoff prospects. Lane Hutson quietly scored 70 points on Thursday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets, becoming the fourth defenseman in franchise history to reach 70 points.

Head coach Martin St. Louis was clearly frustrated with the media Thursday morning, a common occurrence in Montreal. While members of the media have been trying to get as much information as possible ahead of the games, Saint-Louis has made it clear it will be holding its cards as the playoff race heats up.

Forward Alexandre Texier was not in uniform Thursday, replaced by Joe Veleno in the lineup. Texier has been listed as day-to-day due to a lower body injury.

ESPN produced a very interesting segment on top Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael Hayes, discussing a few topics including the unfortunate passing of his father.

Shockingly or not, the team’s two best goalscorers spend a lot of time practicing their goal scoring.

When the Florida Panthers played the Seattle Kraken, it was a game that marked a special milestone and accomplishment for coach Paul Morrissey. Morris, now in his fourth season with the Panthers, became the second player to coach 2,000 NHL games, joining Scotty Bowman. [Florida Panthers]

The Bruins’ road narrative is beginning to change as the schedule gets tougher. There are 10 games remaining in the season, six of which are on the road and seven against playoff teams. In their upcoming leg, the Bruins have three sets of back-to-backs. Only three rivals (Florida, Philadelphia and New Jersey) are out of the playoff picture. [Boston Bruins]

The Detroit Red Wings need to start winning games. After losing in heartbreaking fashion to the Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators, Detroit is one point out of the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs with 11 games remaining in the regular season. Despite scoring 84 points through 71 games, the Red Wings need more. [Detroit Red Wings]

NY Mets make surprise move as insurance if Luis Robert Jr. or Carson Benz disappoints in 2026

In a surprise move ahead of Opening Day 2026, the New York Mets made an additional replacement that sounds like a failsafe in case Luis Robert Jr. or rookie Carson Benz disappoints early in the new season.

NY Mets fans are feeling very optimistic about the start of the new season on Thursday. Despite a disastrous collapse at the end of the 2025 campaign and losing fan favorites Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz in free agency, the club’s offseason changes have produced a roster with genuine World Series potential.

Two notable adjustments this season have been in the outfield. One of the team’s most notable offseason moves was the addition of extremely talented but disappointing one-time All-Star Luis Robert, Jr. as their new center fielder. They will also start highly touted prospect Carson Benz in right field on Opening Day.

Still, both come with risks. After looking like a future superstar after the 2023 season, Robert Jr. has struggled to stay healthy over the past two seasons. And when he’s on the field, he looks like the same offensive player he was three years ago. As for Benz, he looked good in spring training and has serious talent, translating minor league success to the big leagues is never a sure thing.

New York Mets sign Tommy Pham

Perhaps that’s why the NY Mets made an unexpected move on Thursday. Before the start of their season, reports surfaced that they had signed 12-year veteran Tommy Pham to a minor-league deal.

Pham turns 38 this month and is far from his prime. However, he had 10 homers, 52 RBI and 44 runs batted in with a .245/.330/.370/.700 slashline in 120 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates last season. Their addition seems like a “just in case” move if Benz and/or Robert Jr. struggle in the first month of the season.

Although he is not an everyday player, he can still contribute as part of a platoon, especially with youngsters. NY Mets fans will be hoping they don’t see Pham in Queens this year because that means Robert Jr. and Benz were supposed to be difference makers in 2026.
