  • It’s always fun to remember that this is the beginning of the Habs’ potential dominance. They still have a lot of work to do when it comes to roster construction, but they are clearly in the midst of one of the most efficient rebuilds in league history.
  • With all due respect, that’s a dubious amount, seeing your team lose instead of winning is the epitome of denial.

  • The experience of listening to calls in other languages is absolutely amazing. The French broadcast continues to produce incredibly energetic clips.
  • There’s no doubt that rookie netminder Jacob Dobbs is enjoying a strong playoff run. He’s also in good company when it comes to winning a pair of Game 7s. Hall of Famers Ken Dryden and Jaroslav Halak are the only other Canadian netminders to manage this impressive feat.
  • If we filter the results a bit further, only Dryden and Dobbs have accomplished the above feat on the road.

Here are the Montreal Canadiens and NHL news items you may have missed on Monday.

  • Now that the Laval Rocket are eliminated from the AHL playoffs, the Habs have announced the recall of four Black Aces. Defensemen David Rickenbacker and Adam Engstrom, forwards Florian Czekaj and Owen Beck will also be involved. You’ll notice they chose not to promote Joshua Roy or Samuel Blais.

Newhook notability, Rockets playoff adversity, Dobbs

Here are the Montreal Canadiens and NHL news items you may have missed on Friday.

montreal canadiens news

  • Alex Newhook attacked in Game 2 against the Buffalo Sabers and scored two goals to lead Montreal to an impressive 5–1 victory. The game ended up being one of Montreal’s best seasons of the year, with the Habs defeating Buffalo 2–0 and sweeping them 7–0 in the first round. • Zach Benson’s frustrated chihuahua act is part of his playing style, and he’s given full marks for what he has to do to survive in a league full of Rottweilers. But it was fun to watch him try to chip Jacob Dobbs, a player who lives for this kind of grease. It’s worth noting that Dobbs was right after the failed Twitter attempt.
  • He won’t get credit for this, but it appears that Mike Matheson was trying to protect Benson from any serious injury when the Sabers forward reached the bottom of the dog pile.
  • You could tell Newhook was *a little* excited to read the starting lineup before Game 2.
  • Rockets head coach Pascal Vincent had nothing but great things to say about his captain Lucas Condotta.

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the odds and won the NHL draft lottery. That stroke of luck has completely changed the narrative around the moribund franchise. Just a day earlier, all one could talk about was the team’s appointment of new general manager John Chayka, which was being widely criticized. Now, it’s all about that No. 1 pick in next month’s draft. [Toronto Maple Leafs]
  • Colorado Avalanche superstar center Nathan MacKinnon has already locked in a spot on the Maurice Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goalscorer in 2025-26. Now he will get a chance to win the Hart Trophy as league MVP for the second time in his career. [Colorado Avalanche]

Dobbs started the final game of the regular season.

The Montreal Canadiens (48-23-10) will face the Philadelphia Flyers (42-27-12) on Tuesday, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

This will be the final game of the regular season for both teams, and considering that the Habs and Flyers have already qualified for the playoffs, some regular players may be missing from the lineup.

Josh Anderson, Mike Matheson and Phillip Danault could see the game as healthy scratches to give them some rest before springtime hockey begins. As for Caden Guhle, he did not practice, but head coach Martin St-Louis said he will be available for Tuesday’s game.

We do know that netminder Jacob Dobbs will start for the Canadiens, giving the rookie netminder a chance to earn his 30th win. As things stand, Dobbs’ record is 29-9-4, including a 2.75 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage.

This will also be the 43rd game that Dobbs has appeared in, meaning he has been in over half of Montreal’s games, a huge feat for him when we consider the team has had three different netminders this season.

Montreal Canadiens Projected Lineup

Alexandre Texier – Alex Newhook – Ivan Demidov

New goaltending coach’s impact on Dobbs and Fowler

The Montreal Canadiens are heading into the playoffs with two rookie netminders, a rare occurrence in the NHL.

And although Jacob Dobbs and Jacob Fowler both lack NHL experience compared to most goaltending combinations, they have shown very encouraging potential throughout the season, and even more so since the Canadiens hired Marco Marciano as their goaltending coach on January 28.

Since then, both players have improved their 5v5 save percentages, and by quite a large margin too.

Jacob Dobbs goaltending statistics

As you can see in the table below, Dobbs’ save percentage has increased significantly, but it is not due to any major defensive changes by the Habs. The Canadiens are forcing Dobbs to make more saves than ever before in both regular (SV/60) and high-quality saves (HD SV/60).

And yet, Dobbs has also significantly improved his high-danger saves (HDSV%) percentage, which is enough evidence to suggest that he is providing the Canadiens with better results than before while dealing with more shots on a nightly basis.

We have to take into account the sample size, as Dobbs appeared in 24 games before Marciano’s arrival, and only 13 games since, but I’d argue that’s more than enough to present that there’s a strong correlation between Marciano’s appointment and Dobbs’ uptick in results.

Jacob Fowler Goaltending Statistics

As for the other first-year goaltender, he has significantly improved his save percentage while facing slightly more shots per game.

Fowler’s high-danger save percentage has dropped slightly, although it should be noted that he is facing a 33% increase in high-quality scoring opportunities.

Montreal Canadiens Brass Tacks

It’s very difficult to discern which improvements are simply due to the general ups and downs of a hockey season, and which are directly related to Marciano’s work, but the numbers suggest that both of Montreal’s first-year goaltenders have benefited from his presence, at least in the short term.

For example, Dobbs has also improved his save percentage on the penalty kill, which started at .812 before Marciano’s arrival, and has since increased to .868.

The real test will be when the Canadiens start making a push in the playoffs, but as things stand, the team can be confident they made the right decision based on all the available data.

Carrier injured, Dobbs starts vs. Lightning

The Montreal Canadiens (42-21-10) face the Tampa Bay Lightning (46-21-6) on Tuesday night, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

This will be the third time these two teams will face each other, with the Lightning having won both the previous matches. Montreal lost 6–1 in early December, and while the Habs offered a much better effort in the next meeting, they still dropped a 5–4 decision in late December.

Simply put, Tampa Bay is the type of team that fits Montreal. As things stand, if the playoffs started today, the Canadiens would face the Buffalo Sabres, but there’s also a good chance they would face the Lightning in the first round of the playoffs, depending on how the final stretch of the season unfolds.

Lineup Changes

Jacob Dobbs is set to start against Tampa Bay, and will be aiming to win his fourth game in a row, a continuation of the excellent results that led to him being named the first Star of the Week in the NHL.

As for the rest of the lineup, the Habs announced that defenseman Alex Carrier will miss between two to four weeks due to an upper body injury, which explains why they recalled Adam Engstrom from the Laval Rocket (AHL).

Engstrom, 24, can play on the left or right side, and is clearly Laval’s most productive defender. He’s also the most NHL-ready player on the farm, and calling up David Rickenbacker would have been interesting, but throwing anyone to the wolves at this point in the NHL season is foolish. Ultimately Rickenbacker’s time will come.

That being said, Engstrom is not expected to play on Tuesday. Instead, Arbor Zekaj practiced with Caden Guhle, giving us a pretty good indication of the potential defensive pairing, and ending his one-game experiment as a fourth-line forward.

Montreal Canadiens Projected Lineup

Cole Coffield – Nick Suzuki – Juraj Slafkowski

Alex Newhook – Oliver Kapanen – Ivan Demidov

Angstrom Recall, Dobbs First Star, Dutch

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed on Monday.

montreal canadiens news

The Habs opted to recall defenseman Adam Engstrom from the Laval Rocket. The 22-year-old Engstrom leads all Rockets defensemen in scoring, with 10 goals and 24 assists in 45 games. This suggests another defenseman could be injured, or the team intends to use Arbor Zekaj on the fourth line as they face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night. [Canadiens Top 20 Prospects – No. 5 Smooth Skating Engstrom]

Rookie netminder Jacob Dobbs was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week, thanks to a perfect 3-0 record, not to mention an impressive .962 save percentage. [Jakub Dobes Earns First Star Honours]

There was some encouraging news on the injury front, as injured forward Kirby Dach was seen skating in Brossard.

In other injury-related news, Alexandre Texier also spent some time stretching his legs on Monday.

Canadiens power forward Juraj Slafkowski turns 22 on Monday, already having 273 games of NHL experience.

New Jersey Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald is on the hot seat, and he knows it. However, as the days go by, the feeling grows that he is going nowhere. However, this does not mean that no new ones will come. The Devils have performed very poorly this season despite their recent record – winning 10 games in their last 14 contests. [New Jersey Devils]

In a rare occurrence, Vegas Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon decided not to wait until the end of the season to make a major change, but instead gave his flagging veteran a kick to the team with only eight games remaining in the season. [Vegas Golden Knights]

It’s hard to believe that nine years have passed since the Devils selected Nico Hischier with the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. It’s even harder to believe that Hischier is already in the top 20 in games played in Devils history, despite the fact that he only has one Stanley Cup playoff series win to his name. Hutson hits 70, St. Louis disappoints, Dobbs

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed on Thursday.

montreal canadiens news

Jacob Dobbs finds ways to win easily, including his strong effort in a 2-1 win on Thursday night. The win was his 24th win of the year, more than veteran netminder Patrick Roy had in his rookie season. This was also an important game when discussing Montreal’s playoff prospects. [Canadiens Highlights: Dobes Wins, Surpasses Roy’s Rookie Haul]

Lane Hutson quietly scored 70 points on Thursday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets, becoming the fourth defenseman in franchise history to reach 70 points.

Head coach Martin St. Louis was clearly frustrated with the media Thursday morning, a common occurrence in Montreal. While members of the media have been trying to get as much information as possible ahead of the games, Saint-Louis has made it clear it will be holding its cards as the playoff race heats up.

Forward Alexandre Texier was not in uniform Thursday, replaced by Joe Veleno in the lineup. Texier has been listed as day-to-day due to a lower body injury.

ESPN produced a very interesting segment on top Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael Hayes, discussing a few topics including the unfortunate passing of his father.

Shockingly or not, the team’s two best goalscorers spend a lot of time practicing their goal scoring.

When the Florida Panthers played the Seattle Kraken, it was a game that marked a special milestone and accomplishment for coach Paul Morrissey. Morris, now in his fourth season with the Panthers, became the second player to coach 2,000 NHL games, joining Scotty Bowman. [Florida Panthers]

The Bruins’ road narrative is beginning to change as the schedule gets tougher. There are 10 games remaining in the season, six of which are on the road and seven against playoff teams. In their upcoming leg, the Bruins have three sets of back-to-backs. Only three rivals (Florida, Philadelphia and New Jersey) are out of the playoff picture. [Boston Bruins]

The Detroit Red Wings need to start winning games. After losing in heartbreaking fashion to the Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators, Detroit is one point out of the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs with 11 games remaining in the regular season. Dobbs wins, Roy ahead of rookie race

The Montreal Canadiens host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night in a game with significant playoff implications.

It was a tough match, but in the end the Canadiens emerged with a 2–1 victory.

With the win, first-year netminder Jacob Dobbs recorded his 24th win of the season, officially surpassing Patrick Roy’s win total in his rookie season, doing so in 11 fewer games.

An impressive feat, all things considered.

Let’s look at the highlights!

first and best

Jayden Struble made his mark by scoring his first goal of the year, not to mention his first goal since November 26, 2024. Suffice it to say, it’s a stretch.

It must be said that both Lane Hutson and Zachary Bolduc did a great job helping him, with the former keeping the game alive in the offensive zone on two occasions and eventually finding an open teammate.

Dobbs holds the fort

It was a relatively slow-paced game, although it should be noted that the Blue Jackets held a 9–2 edge in high-danger scoring opportunities during 40 minutes of play.

Dobbs did a great job of shutting down the Jackets when they were carrying the bulk of the momentum, including a pair of breakaways in the second period.

He’s not always technically the best goaltender in the league, but he has an uncanny way of scoring important wins for the Habs, and that’s all that matters at this point in the season.

welcome back, zach

With the game tied 1–1, the Canadiens got some much-needed offensive support from the bottom six when Zachary Bolduc scored his first goal since December 23 and his 11th of the season.

It has been difficult to create secondary and tertiary offense in Montreal, making this another important target for a player who has struggled to find the back of the net in 2026.

It was easily one of Bolduc’s best performances of the season, as he would foul Blue Jackets defenseman Damon Severson midway through the third period.

Dobbs makes another start, Anderson injured

The Montreal Canadiens (37-20-10) will face the Detroit Red Wings (37-23-8) on Thursday night, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

This will be the third and final meeting between these Atlantic Division teams in the regular season, with both teams having split the previous two games. The Canadiens dominated the Red Wings 5–1 in early October, while Detroit bounced back with a 4–0 shutout win in January.

More importantly, this will be a game that will have significant playoff implications, as Detroit and Montreal are separated by just two points in the Eastern Conference playoff race, although it should be noted that the Habs have a game in hand.

As things stand, Montreal’s playoff chances are around 85%, while Detroit’s are just under 69%. In other words, no team is comfortable enough to tolerate poor performance.

Given that Thursday’s game is so important, the Canadiens have decided to give rookie netminder Jacob Dobbs another kick. He had an excellent performance in Montreal’s 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, stopping 26 of 28 shots to secure the win.

If Dobbs wins, he will officially tie Canadiens legend Patrick Roy with 23 wins in his rookie season, quite a feat when we consider he had to share his net with two other netminders. For the record, Roy needed 47 games to reach 23 wins, while this would be Dobbs’ 34th appearance of the season.

Beyond the netminder, head coach Martin Saint-Louis will have to make some modifications to his forward lines, as Josh Anderson is currently listed as day-to-day (upper-body-injury) and will be forced to miss the game against the Red Wings.

It remains to be seen who will replace Andersen in the lineup, however, as injured forward Patrik Laine is not expected to play. In all likelihood, Joe Veleno, who hasn’t played since early February, will be facing the same team that drafted him in 2018.

The Red Wings are also dealing with injury issues, as Dylan Larkin, Michael Rasmussen, Andrew Copp and Michael Brandsegg-Nygaard are currently unavailable, with the latter getting closer to a return to action, and could be a late addition to Detroit’s roster on Thursday.

Dobbs expected to start, playoff race

The Montreal Canadiens (33-18-10) are set to face the Los Angeles Kings (25-22-4), with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

The Habs are less than 24 hours removed from a disappointing loss against the Anaheim Ducks, in which the team overcame a third period deficit to establish a very fragile one-goal lead. But as has been the case on many occasions this year, the Canadiens struggled to hold off their opponents, ultimately losing to the Ducks 6–5 in a shootout.

All things considered, it was a better effort than their previous game in California, a 6–2 loss to the San Jose Sharks. And the Canadiens managed to pick up a point in Anaheim thanks to great efforts from young stars like Cole Caufield, Lane Hutson, Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkowski.

With a shootout point in the bank, the Habs keep their playoff chances above 80%, but it must be said that they aren’t generating a lot of confidence from their recent play, which has seen a very low level of consistency, especially from a defensive standpoint.

Simply put, the Canadiens can score a lot of goals, but they have a very hard time defending, and this issue goes beyond the huge save percentages produced by their netminders.

Lineup changes, starting goalkeeper

Neither the Canadiens nor the Kings practiced Saturday. Any changes to the lineup will be revealed when they take to the ice for pre-game warm-ups.

However, the Habs are expected to start Jacob Dobbs, their strongest option among available goaltenders. Again, Montreal’s defensive situation makes life very difficult on the netminders, but it must be said that Dobbs gives the Habs the best chance to win on any given night.

As far as the skaters are concerned, we saw some very encouraging play from the front line on Friday night. The Slafkovsky experiment on the second line was mercifully ended, yielding immediate and fairly aggressive results from the top trio.

All three players scored at least two points, with Caufield scoring two goals.

With all due respect to Canadiens head coach Martin Saint-Louis, this was a decision taken a long time ago.

Montreal Canadiens Projected Lineup

Cole Coffield – Nick Suzuki – Juraj Slafkowski
