Battle One More Time, Dobson Gametime Decision

The Montreal Canadiens (3-3) face the Tampa Bay Lightning (3-3) in Game 7 on Sunday, with puck drop scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.

As has been the case throughout the series, the teams faced off in Game 6, with the Lightning emerging victorious 1–0 in overtime. This was the fifth game to require extra time, which shows how difficult the goal was to achieve.

In fact, Montreal’s best forwards Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkowski have yet to score a goal at 5v5 against the Lightning, which is one of the biggest problems facing the Habs in the final game of the series.

Simply put, the Canadiens need their star players to shine in Game 7.

The good news for head coach Martin St-Louis is that he is able to rely on his depth with players like Alex Texier, Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook to provide much-needed secondary and tertiary offense.

It’s also worth noting that veteran Brendan Gallagher has done great things from an underlying numbers standpoint, despite his lack of ice time. While Gallagher was on the ice, the Canadiens controlled over 70 percent of the shots, the best result among all skaters.

Possible Lineup Changes

It remains to be seen whether veteran Noah Dobson will be in uniform for the Canadiens, although his presence would be a significant boon for a team that has had difficulty defending the Lightning from the crowd.

Tampa Bay held a 22–7 advantage in high-danger opportunities during Game 6, erasing much of Montreal’s series lead in the process.

At the very least, with Dobson in the mix, rookie netminder Jacob Dobbs should be exposed to less of a weird man rush.

As of 11:20 a.m. ET, Dobson is considered a game-time decision.

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed on Friday.

  • Unfortunately for the organization, the Laval Rocket also dropped their playoff game, losing 6–2 to the Toronto Marlies. Laval actually established a 2–0 lead midway through the first period, but the Marlies’ four powerplay goals were too much to handle. [AHL]
  • One of the main reasons the Canadiens have been able to keep up with the Lightning is because of the play on the team’s third line. Or is this his fourth line? Either way, Alexandre Texier, Kirby Dach and Zachary Bolduc are scoring at a first-line pace. [Caufield Among Finalists For Lady Byng Memorial Trophy]
  • Caufield, one of the players who has struggled at 5v5, was quick to send his praise.
  • As for Bolduc, he is one of several young players in the province who were inspired by the experienced Brendan Gallagher.
  • Gallagher is appreciative of the support he has received since returning to the lineup.
  • With all due respect to Henrik Lundqvist, the game clearly lacks respect for Jacob Dobbs. Sure, he’s a rookie, but you could argue he’s done just as good a job as the veteran Andrei Vasilevskiy.
  • big bill It truly epitomizes what it means to be a member of the Montreal Canadiens.
  • Noah Dobson skated on Friday, and by all accounts, it looks like he’s as close as possible to returning to the lineup. There were also some whispers that he was almost cleared to play in Game 6.
  • Juraj Slafkowski decided to take a shot at Max Crozier, who was taken out of the lineup for Game 6.

  • Everything is being evaluated with the New Jersey Devils for GM Sunny Mehta, until they don’t. On Friday, Mehta made his first change as Devils GM, who has control of hockey operations. [New Jersey Devils]
  • Mehta will face big decisions this summer as he decides on five key New Jersey Devils pending free agents – including a big ‘maybe’. Priority No. 1 for Mehta should be to lock up Nico Hischier as soon as he’s eligible, however, he has one year left on his deal. It would not be wise to keep it hanging for long, but the time is there. [New Jersey Devils]

playoff officiating, dobson position, reinbacker

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed on Monday.

  • Elliotte Friedman officiated in the first round series between the Habs and Lightning. Or more precisely, they immediately discussed a penalty, which at first seemed imaginary, but was actually a legitimate penalty on Oliver Kapanen. In this particular case, I would argue the point was that the referee’s hand did not go up until Dominic James oversold the contact moments later. Either way, the Canadians cannot focus on umpiring in this series, as it is a factor they cannot easily control.
  • Even though the results on the ice at 5v5 have been less than ideal, Lane Hutson has done a great job when tasked with defending star players 1v1.
  • Lost in the shuffle over the weekend, the Canadiens re-assigned defenseman David Rickenbacker to the Laval Rocket (AHL). The Rockets’ playoff push begins on Wednesday, with a series against the Toronto Marlies on the menu.
  • Members of the organization who met with the media on Monday included Alexandre Texier, Alex Newhook and head coach Martin St-Louis.

  • Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk has been in NHL trade rumors for a while now and it doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon. Tkachuk’s future is a major topic of conversation after the Carolina Hurricanes defeated Ottawa in the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs. [Ottawa Senators]
  • The Washington Capitals have announced they are parting ways with former hub Kirk Mueller. Müller’s contract was due to expire in June. On Monday morning, Capitals general manager Chris Patrick released a statement regarding Mueller. The assistant coach wants to pursue “other opportunities in the National Hockey League.” [Washington Capitals]
  • After a 6-1 loss on Sunday, the Buffalo Sabers could be even stronger on Tuesday. The Sabers have beaten the odds heading into their first-round playoff series against the Boston Bruins with a mix of momentum and growing injury concerns. [Buffalo Sabres]

Dobson Impact, Zarovsky Elite Potential, Mooney

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed on Thursday.

montreal canadiens news

Noah Dobson played a key role in scoring at least one point against the New York Islanders. Unfortunately for the Canadiens, it was not enough, as the Islanders staged a comeback late in the game, before securing the overtime win. [Canadiens Highlights: Dobson Scores Twice To Secure A Point]

We’ve moved up to the Top 3 in our annual Montreal Canadiens prospect rankings. Starting things off is extremely talented winger Alexander Zarovsky, who is enjoying a great rookie season in the KHL. He is a dynamic presence in the offensive zone, and the fact that he is performing in a professional hockey league at such a young age is worthy of praise. [Canadiens Top 20 Prospects – No. 3 Brilliant Alexander Zharovsky]

Speaking of Zarowski, the 19-year-old forward scored a beautiful shootout goal to help Salavat win on Thursday.

Michael Hayes took to the ice on Thursday night, but it was LJ Mooney who stole the show. Hayes added one assist in a battle of Habs prospects, while Mooney recorded a goal and an assist in Minnesota’s 4–2 win over the University of Michigan. Another Canadiens prospect, Luke Mittelstaedt, also had a great night and earned two assists for the Gophers. As a reminder, Mooney was voted the No. 8 prospect in the organization by Habs fans. [Canadiens Prospect Rankings – No. 8 Highly-Skilled L.J. Mooney ]

OK, we missed Throwback Thursday, but it’s never too late to include a clip of current Canadiens head coach Martin Saint-Louis scoring on former Canadiens goaltender Patrick Roy.

The Laval Rocket will have to play without several of their top players over the weekend. Adam Engstrom will miss four weeks of action, while several others, including Jacob Fowler, have not been cleared to play.

The highlight of the night for the New Jersey Devils at PPG Paints Arena was when the Pittsburgh Penguins faithful gave golden goalscorer Jack Hughes a standing ovation to solidify Team USA’s victory at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Then again, it was penguins all night. [New Jersey Devils]

The Florida Panthers vowed to put on an aggressive performance against the Toronto Maple Leafs after the three-week Olympic break in an effort to get back into playoff contention. He certainly did that. The Panthers played one of their best times of the season and defeated the Leafs 5–1. [Florida Panthers]

It has been seven years since the last time the San Jose Sharks were not an obvious trade deadline seller. But the Sharks were just five points out of the Western Conference’s last wild card spot in San Jose’s first break game after the Olympics on Thursday against the Calgary Flames. [San Jose Sharks]
