With 21 points in a 136-11 loss to the Miami Heat, the San Antonio Spurs’ Dylan Harper accomplished a feat in his basketball career, though it was not common during his NBA rookie season: back-to-back 20-point games.
“This is my…this is my first 20-point back-to-back games?” Harper asked in response to a question about scoring more than 20 in consecutive games.
When told he scored 20 or more points in a game eight times, the 20-year-old guard didn’t say much more.
“Oh, wow,” Harper said. “Oh wow.”
The second overall pick of this summer’s draft averaged 19.4 points per game in his only season with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. While other players in the draft class, like former Duke teammates Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel, are hitting those numbers as pros, Harper is averaging just 11.5 points per game this season on a team that holds the second-best record in the West and is equipped with quality depth on the wings.
“We are winning,” Harper said. “The best thing about this league, for me, coming to a team where even though I’m not scoring 20 every night, I get to learn from a great vet, [De’Aaron] Fox, who obviously has been in the league, two-time All-Star, and all that. So, I get to learn from someone like him and be aggressive as well as take a back seat.”
Along with Fox, the Spurs rotation includes Rookie of the Year Stephen Cassel as well as Devin Vassell, who has averaged nearly 19 points per game in two different seasons.
“Yeah, I’m finding my stride, but I think having Steph back and Dev coming back has made the game a lot easier for me,” Harper said. “So much space on the floor. We have a lot of threats, so it really picks my poison. They do a great job of encouraging me to just be me and get off the ball, find open shooters. But if it’s one-on-one, attack.
“So, to be honest, scoring 20 is not the main thing. The main thing for me is just to win. And, as long as we win, I am fine.”
Although his stats are lower than he’s used to, the son of former NBA great Ron Harper has a definite opinion on his current role.
“I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” Harper said. “I’ve been hired into a great organization that teaches you the game at a high level, and I think even in a game like this where the numbers may look good, I’m still watching film, still getting yelled at like any other game. It’s a testament to the kind of standard we’re all held to, but I love it. I feel like I’m getting better day by day, whether it’s watching film or on the court.”
Not only does San Antonio see Harper as a big part of their success this season, but the Spurs also see him as a big part of the future centered around MVP candidate Victor Wembanyama.
“I think one thing about us is that we’re all competitive, and we’re relentless. No matter what the score is, I think we have a great group of guys that compete at a high level all the time,” Harper continued. “This team can do miracles; there’s a lot of potential, but we’re trying to take it day by day, step by step, not skipping any steps. The sky’s the limit.”

The Rookie of the Year discussion has begun, and the conversation focuses on Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel and VJ Edgecombe. This doesn’t reflect what other players are doing in the league, because there are some who are playing really well. One of those rookies is Dylan Harper.
Chandler Parsons recently showed love to the San Antonio Spurs rookie, and although he doesn’t think he’s in the Rookie of the Year conversation, he thinks he has a solid career ahead of him.
“If you put Dylan Harper on the Mavs or Charlotte [Hornets]”He’s probably averaging the same exact numbers, if not better,” Parsons said on Run It Back. “He’s that good. … This scenario of being on a good team almost hurts his chances of winning [ROTY]. His opportunity is not there; He’s playing less minutes, he’s playing behind guys like Fox and Cassel, where Cone and Cooper have the final green light and they’re playing on bad teams.

Harper is in a different situation than Flagg, as he is basically putting up big numbers for the Mavericks as the No. 1 option on the team. Knueppel has played a solid role for the Hornets, but they are not one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.
As far as Harper is concerned, he is playing behind multiple guards, but he is still contributing to the Spurs as they are one of the top teams in the Western Conference. Harper certainly deserves flowers for the way he’s been performing with the Spurs, but it won’t come with a Rookie of the Year trophy.
As for him, he’s probably hoping he gets a chance to capture an NBA championship at the end of the season because of the role he’ll play in helping them get there.

Spurs rookie Dylan Harper is not enjoying the best statistical season by an NBA rookie. not by a long shot. But, thanks in part to Stephen Cassel and De’Aaron Fox – as well as Victor Wembanyama – he is enjoying one of the most successful seasons by any standout rookie. By a long shot.
Harper shared, “With three dynamic guards, we’re hard to figure out. I think when Fox and Steph start playing, we’ve got the two best guards in the NBA.” “And I think when I come off the bench, I think it’s another weapon that we have. So, I think it opens up the door for everybody, including Vick. And I think when Vick has that much pressure and two guys go at him, it opens up the world for us.”
Harper is seventh on the team in scoring with 11 points per game. Playing 22 minutes per night, the second overall pick of last summer’s draft is seeing the floor significantly less than Cassel and Fox. The reigning Rookie of the Year is averaging 16.6 points in 29.7 minutes, while Fox, a two-time NBA All-Star, is scoring 19 points per night in a team-leading 31.6 minutes of action.
Harper praised his other teammates, saying, “I think we can all score from everywhere. That’s the beauty of this team. We can all dribble the ball.”
Harper added, “We have a group of ball handlers and a group of scorers. So, every night is going to be a big night.” “As a collective group, just coming forward and helping as much as we can, it’s great for us.”
Although all are dynamic offensively, Harper, Castle and Fox each have an aspect of their game that they do better than the other two. Fox is the best scorer of the three. Harper may be the best at getting to the rim. And Castle is easily the best defender of the group.
“He has understood his role very well,” Wembanyama said. “The level he’s playing at is really unseen for a second-year player and how it fits into our game plan.”
Nicknamed “Area 51” as an allusion to their jersey numbers and Wembanyama’s ‘alien’ nickname, Wembanyama and Cassel are one of the most lethal defensive combinations in the NBA.
“I know we make it difficult, we make it uncomfortable for people to play against us,” Wembanyama said. “That’s the goal because a guy has to dribble around one of the best on-ball defenders and then make a shot against some of the best rim protectors; it’s very tough.”
While Cooper Flagg and Kohn Knueppel lead the Rookie of the Year discussion, Harper will likely be playing even if he doesn’t play this spring.
“It feels great,” Harper said of the Spurs’ success. “I think this is the most wins I’ve had in a long time. So, to have this win streak and keep it going and not take teams for granted, I think, is huge for us.”
Thanks to former Rutgers stars, Fox and Cassel, the Spurs are currently seeded second in the West. Their position at the top is much closer to the Oklahoma City Thunder than the teams behind them.

The NBA Slam Dunk Contest has been in decline for some time, with most of the league’s best players refusing to compete in the dunking exhibition. It certainly feels like the NBA has had to beg some players to go out and compete, and this year, there were plenty of throwbacks — from Jaxon Hayes’ routine tomahawk dunk, to Jace Richardson’s hard fall, to San Antonio Spurs rookie Carter Bryant’s timeout, to reigning Dunk Contest champion Keshad Johnson’s eccentric dance moves.
But it looks like a rising star in Spurs rookie Dylan Harper could at least bring a little name recognition to the dunk contest. In an appearance on the Cousins Podcast with Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady, Harper, who was accompanied by his father and three-time NBA champion Ron and his brother, current Boston Celtics guard Ron Harper Jr., was perhaps inspired to attend the 2027 NBA Slam Dunk Contest in Phoenix.
“I could have done every dunk you did in that contest,” Dylan told his father, referring to Ron’s appearances in the 1987 and 1989 dunk contests. “[But] “I’m not doing a no-dunk contest.”
“Don’t you think you’re good enough?” McGrady asked, provoking a reaction.
“No, I guess I don’t know that many tricks,” the Spurs guard replied. “[But] We can see like a year. We can see next year.
In 1987, Ron Harper, still with the Cleveland Cavaliers, self-lobed and tapped to the front rim for a reverse dunk before a reverse dunk for his second of two of the night. He finished fifth in the competition.
Two years later, he executed a one-handed, 360 Statue of Liberty jam (which he made on the second attempt) followed by a self-lob, a high toss off the ground, which he punctuated with a thrusting one-handed tomahawk.
The Spurs guard doesn’t have a high enough bar to clear given the dunks his father did.
