After months of Minnesota Vikings trade rumors, the front office agreed to send out Jonathan Greenard over draft weekend. While 2024 first-round pick Dallas Turner is set to replace Greenard’s spot in the starting lineup, where he will play opposite Andrew Van Ginkel, the Vikings’ forward depth is undoubtedly thin.

Prior to this, the Vikings had a strong three-man rotation. Behind Turner and Van Ginkel, they have a trio of former undrafted free agents in Bo Richter, Tyler Batty and Chase Chambliss, all unproven players with less than three years of experience. Thus, Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores is likely aiming to sign another pass-rusher before the season starts.

Floyd recorded 19 pressures last year, which was actually the fewest in his eight-year career. He only had 3.5 sacks, the second fewest of his career. So, why would the Vikings want him? While the 33-year-old Floyd is coming off a rough season, even those numbers would be respectable as a rotational edge rusher, especially if Coach Flores thinks there’s a chance Floyd can return to top form in 2024 after recording 8.5 sacks. Plus, Kevin O’Connell and Floyd overlapped for two seasons on the Rams, so he already knows what the veteran will add to the locker room.

AJ Ebenezer

Still only 27 years old, AJ Epenesa may still have some untapped potential hidden in his bones. He has never recorded more than 6.5 sacks in a season, but he has recorded at least 6 sacks in three of his six playing seasons. This is a respectable track record, considering he has only once started more than two games in a season. The Vikings’ coaching staff may feel like they can get the most out of the 6-foot-6-inch, 260-pound defender.

The 37-year-old future Hall of Famer has reached his prime, yet Von Miller is still extremely productive. Last season, he managed to record nine sacks despite starting only three games. Jadeveon Clowney

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft is somehow still only 33 years old, and he’s become a bit of a journeyman, but still a productive guy. Last year, he recorded 8.5 sacks as a member of the Cowboys, despite only making six starts and appearing in 13 games. Clowney also has a very high floor and a high ceiling, having recorded over 20 pressures in each of the last three seasons.

In the 3-4, your edge rushers aren’t just pass rushers. They’re outside linebackers who have to break ground against the run, occasionally drop into coverage, and still get after the quarterback. This is a different job description. Max Crosby can do it all, and he’s one of the few players in the league who can really do it. But that man standing in front of him? That room is empty now. Leonard needs a bookend. This week’s combine is where the search begins in earnest.

Here are five edge rushers you should watch at the NFL Combine this week and read ahead of the NFL Draft.

reuben ben jr | miami

Ben is the most physically dominant pass rusher in this class and it’s not particularly close. Thick, powerful, plays with leverage and violent hands, and recorded 9.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss for a Miami team that went to the national championship game. The knock on that — and scouts have been talking about it this week — is arm’s length. The smaller weapons at 3-4 outside linebacker can cause problems at the point of attack against NFL tackles. See how he measures when the official numbers come out on Thursday. If the weapons are OK, he’s a top-five pick and will be gone before Las Vegas gets a sniff of him. If the numbers raise questions, there is also a scenario where he drops significantly. In a 3-4 scheme that asks its top players to be more than just designated pass rushers, Benn’s run defense is really a selling point. He makes headway better than anyone in this class.

David Bailey | texas tech

The pure speed-to-power combination that Bailey brings is the best in the draft. Fourteen and a half sacks, 19.5 tackles for loss last season. His first step is almost unfair – he’s off the ball before the tackle has even processed the snap. The question scouts are asking isn’t whether he can rush the passer. Obviously, he can. It’s whether he’s a three-down player in the scheme that calls for it. A 3-4 outside linebacker in Leonard’s system, which blends the influences of Brian Flores and Mike McDonald, needs to be reliable against the run before becoming a pass rush weapon. Watch Bailey in one-on-one drills and pay attention to how he uses his hands. Power rushers who can bend and redirect translate better into the 3-4. Bailey could be that guy.

Cassius Howell Texas A&M

Twenty-five sacks and 33 tackles for loss over the past three seasons. This is not a wrong impression. Howell doesn’t get as much attention as Ben and Bailey because he doesn’t fit the prototype (he’s not as big, not as tall), but the production is undeniable and the turn around the corner is legitimate. In a 3-4, a small but explosive outside linebacker who can run from a two-point stance is really valuable. McDonald’s defenses in Baltimore routinely used that type of player. TJ Parker | CLEMSON

2025 was tough for Parker. Clemson’s defense struggled throughout, and their numbers fell short of their excellent 2024 season. Eleven sacks and six forced fumbles in 2024 tells you what the ceiling looks like. The power in his game is real. He plays and performs better than any player in this class, makes hard tackles against the run and has advanced hand usage. For a 3-4 scheme that asks the outside linebackers to be strong on initial downs before running on third down, Parker profiles well. Arvel Reese | Ohio State

Daniel Jeremiah has Reese taken third overall in the entire draft class. third. Not third in lead gainers – third overall. Ohio State used him all over the field, off the ball at linebacker, as a rusher, as a spy. That versatility is exactly what Leonard’s hybrid 3-4 is going to demand. Looking to make an impact after the All-Star break, the Miami Heat got off to an explosive start with a 128-97 win over the Atlanta Hawks with the return of a key piece to the puzzle. As soon as Heat star Tyler Herro returned to practice on Thursday after missing the previous 15 games, he came back on Friday night, and made an immediate impact that caught the attention of captain Bam Adebayo.

It has been a disappointing season for Herro to say the least, as in addition to missing the last 15 fixtures, he has been absent in 45 of the 57 games he has played so far. Coming off the bench in the win at Atlanta, he led the team with 24 points on nine of 14 shooting from the field, two of four from deep, four rebounds and three assists.

For Adebayo, who recorded 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists, it is not surprising to see how Herro could impact Miami, but he felt the guard has an “edge” to him.

“We know what Tyler can do – it’s not a shock…but I think he had an edge about him today, and he showed it,” Adebayo said, via the team’s video, which was posted on Twitter by HeatCulture, formerly of X.

It was Herro’s 11th game of the season, which was an “encouraging” sign to see, as head coach Erik Spoelstra reiterated.

“It was definitely exciting,” Spoelstra said. “Obviously, it’s been a unique season for him. We know how competitive he is; we know how much he wants to be there. But these are things you can’t control. But we’ve never forgotten about the talent he brings. He changes our dynamic tremendously.”

Heat’s Tyler Herro speaks on his return from rib injury

While the Heat are looking to turn their season around after finishing close to a .500 record and finishing eighth in the Eastern Conference, Herro’s involvement could reflect the totality of what this team is really like. At the end of the day, Herro’s health is paramount to as far as this team can reach.

“It felt great,” Herro said. “Finally, it was amazing to be out there. To be out there with my teammates, playing games and getting into my routine again. It felt good.”

The focus has now turned to what his role will be at Will, whether he will continue to come off the bench or return to the starting lineup. After missing 13 games with a toe injury, Spoelstra benched him in a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on January 6, but returned to the starting lineup.

“Right now we’re just trying to get him out of there,” Spoelstra said. “We’re going to manage the minutes. I’m not thinking too much about it, I’m not putting anything into it, I don’t have a timeline for anything.”

That remains to be seen, but the answer will be revealed soon as Miami takes on the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night.

There are still a few weeks left until moves are made in the 2026 NFL offseason, but the amount of pass rushers available this spring is already generating a lot of buzz. From NFL trade rumors involving Trey Hendrickson and Max Crosby to some underappreciated free agents, there are attractive options for pass-rush-needy teams.

Let’s take a look at our NFL offseason predictions to see where the top edge players will land this spring in both the trade market and NFL free agency.

Trey Hendrickson: Indianapolis Colts

A tag-and-trade for Trey Hendrickson seems inevitable. With the way the Cincinnati Bengals have handled contract negotiations with their All-Pro edge rusher over the past few years, we see no reason to believe they’ll let him hit the open market and walk away for nothing. The issue for Cincinnati is that a tag-and-trade creates more drama, and any team interested in acquiring Hendrickson would have to pay for the trade and then sign him to a long-term deal. With general manager Chris Ballard on the hot seat and having already sacrificed future draft capital to build this defense, we think the Indianapolis Colts will make a big change and re-unite Hendrickson with defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.

Khalil Mack: Baltimore Ravens

In 2025, the Baltimore Ravens finished the regular season with the fifth-lowest pressure rate (19%) and second-lowest sack rate (4.6%) in the NFL. We’re confident that first-year head coach Jesse Minter will help fix some of this, but Baltimore’s pass rush still leaves a lot to be desired. Fortunately, the club has over $20 million in cap space this offseason, and could make a lot of it with the Lamar Jackson contract restructuring. Doing so would give Baltimore the financial flexibility to bring in Khalil Mack on a one-year deal, while also adding a high-end defender who can still generate pressure and stop the run.

Hidden Object: Washington Commanders

We think instead of spending on a top pass rusher in NFL free agency, the Washington Commanders take a different approach. This will see a significant portion of their cap room spent on improving the supporting cast around Jaden Daniels and utilizing a top-10 pick on an edge rusher. It won’t be everything that Commanders general manager Adam Peters does. He will take advantage of the defense that has led his team to the Lombardy Trophy with the addition of Boye Mafe. While his sack numbers – 8 over the past two seasons – don’t jump off the page, the 27-year-old is above average against the run and generating pressure.

Odafe Oweh: Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers need to retain one of their top pass rushers who is bound for NFL free agency. Given that Odafe Oweh is young, we think the 27-year-old will be brought back if Khalil Mack heads elsewhere. After landing in Los Angeles a few weeks before the NFL trade deadline, Oweh generated 19 pressures, 13 quarterback hits, 8 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks in 12 games with the Chargers. Also, with the departure of Jesse Minter, the club needs to retain one of the primary reasons for its defensive success last season.

Bradley Chubb: Dallas Cowboys

Because he is being released, signing edge rusher Bradley Chubb will not be included in the NFL’s compensatory-selection formula. This makes him very attractive to clubs in need of pass-rushing help who would not be able to spend money in NFL free agency because they do not want to give up the selection they receive for departing talent. A team like the Green Bay Packers could be an option, but we’re going in a different direction. New Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker worked in Denver when Chubb earned his second Pro Bowl selection in 2022. Dallas also needs veteran pass-rushing help, preferably at a reasonable price.

Max Crosby: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

We think Max Crosby will request a trade this offseason, making the Las Vegas Raiders willing to move him to a contender. While the Detroit Lions are a popular choice as his landing spot, we’re projecting the All-Pro edge rusher to land with another NFC contender. If Mike Evans and Lavonte David are re-signed, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking at a narrow window for contention with their core getting older. Crosby would be a major upgrade for the Buccaneers Rush, giving them a difference-maker whose presence will also help Vita Vea, Calijah Kensi and Yaya Diaby. Las Vegas takes the premium draft capital and moves Crosby to the NFC, while the Buccaneers pick up a player who can help them compete for an NFC crown next season.
