Devil’s Own Slow Burn; Quinn Hughes, Wild Fall Behind Stars

One of the things New Jersey Devils fans are hoping for is a first-round exit from the Minnesota Wild.

Why?

Because some people are still holding out hope that the Devils might take Hughes’ older brother if he is hesitant to commit to his new team. When the calendar turns to July 1, Hughes has one year left on his contract. So whether it’s a deal this summer or via free agency next offseason, the less successful Minnesota is, the more likely it is that Quinn won’t commit.

Personally, I see Quinn staying in Minnesota. But never say never. Especially when there are no results.

At the Links, a slow burn by Devils ownership before eventually firing Tom Fitzgerald.

Elsewhere, chaos in Philly, Alexis Lafreniere’s big deal, and goalie crisis in Buffalo?

Devil’s Trade Rumors and News

New Jersey Hockey Now: Why didn’t Devils ownership fire Tom Fitzgerald sooner? At Sunny Mehta’s introductory press conference, managing partner David Blitzer explained that “there was no eureka moment.”

Buffalo hockey now: Yes, that’s my name in the byline. I’m helping with our Buffalo Sabers coverage while they’re in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. First, after heading into Game 2, does Buffalo already have a goaltender crisis?

Forever Blueshirts: The New York Rangers knew their top six wasn’t scaring anyone. Part of the issue is that Alexis Lafreniere hasn’t taken the step forward expected. The former No. 1 overall pick explained that he knows he can get even better, and wants to maintain his strong position in 2025-26.

Athletic ($): Devils fans are expecting it to be bad, but after the Minnesota Wild’s loss to the Dallas Stars last night, their reaction in Game 4 while falling behind 2-1 in the series will really tell us all if they are any different.

If not, maybe Quinn Hughes isn’t ready to live in Minnie.

Boston Hockey Now: As for the Boston Bruins, they do not have a captain in this Stanley Cup playoffs. However, Jeremy Swayman is establishing himself as a leader.

Philly hockey now: What a series this is shaping up to be for the Philadelphia Flyers. Amidst massive chaos last night they took a 3-0 series lead over their rivals from Pennsylvania. More from Will James here.

10 top MLB prospects who could make their Major League debut next fall

We’ve already seen some of the top MLB prospects make their major league debuts this season, some of them even doing so with lucrative contract extensions. In what is already shaping up to be one of the best rookie classes in over a decade, another wave of talent could be on the horizon. Let’s take a look at 10 top MLB prospects who could debut in the coming weeks.

READ MORE: MLB Power Rankings Week 3

1. Max Clark

Syndication: Detroit Free Press
Junfu Han/USA TODAY Network via Imagen Images

Max Clark is a former third overall draft pick who is currently ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 8 prospect. He’s currently slashing .344/.421/.500 in Triple-A, and while he hasn’t hit any home runs yet, he’s showing off his speed with six stolen bases and eight doubles. The Tigers could also easily make room for him; All it would take is sending down Jahmai Jones, who is currently slashing .077/.077/.077.

2. Bryce Aldridge

Baseball: San Francisco Giants at Spring Training-Team USA
Mark J. rebilas-imagen images

Bryce Aldridge has already spent time in the big leagues through 2025, and while that stint was about as bad as it could go, it feels like he deserves another chance. MLB Pipeline gives him a 70 power tool, which would be a perfect fit for a Giants team that currently ranks last in MLB with just nine home runs in their first 19 games.

3. Travis Bazana

Syndication: The Columbus Dispatch
Samantha Madar/Columbus Dispatch/USA TODAY Network via Images

Travis Bazana was the No. 1 overall pick in 2024, and he’s already knocking on the big league door. He is currently reaching base at a .389 clip in Triple-A and slugging at .451. Meanwhile, Cleveland’s big-league second baseman, Brian Roccio, has a .688 OPS. Rocio could be moved into a utility role to make room for Bazana, who could make an immediate impact on Cleveland’s lineup. He proved himself at the World Baseball Classic earlier this year as a member of Australia’s team.

4. Walker Jenkins

Syndication: Wilmington Star-News
Michael Cuneo/StarNews/USA TODAY Network via Imagine Images

The former No. 5 overall pick is ranked as the No. 11 prospect by MLB Pipeline, and although his Triple-A numbers probably aren’t where the Twins organization would like them to be, it’s probably time to call him up. The Twins are making noise in the AL Central, and Walker Jenkins could be ready to make a big impact.

5. Jonah Tong

MLB: New York Mets at Chicago Cubs
mat marten-image images

Jonah Tong made his debut with the Mets last season and was impressive in his first start, allowing one run in five innings. It was all downhill from there. Tong lasted five starts and finished with a 7.71 ERA in 2025. But the Mets once thought he was ready, and last year he had a 1.43 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A. It feels like there hasn’t been much development for Tong at the minor league level.

6. Jett Williams

Syndication: Journal Sentinel
Dave Kallman/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/via USA TODAY Network Images

Jett Williams is one of two Brewers infielders ranked in MLB Pipeline’s top 100. The Brewers have always found ways to win by using their youth, and Williams is part of their next batch.

7. Cooper Pratt

Syndication: Journal Sentinel
Dave Kallman/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/via USA TODAY Network Images

The Brewers have already extended Cooper Pratt an eight-year, $50.75 million contract. This alone is reason enough to call him. Obviously the team has confidence in him.

8. Harry Ford

Baseball: Milwaukee Brewers Spring Training-Great Britain
Rick Scutari-Imagen Images

Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz is hitting .171 with a -0.2 bWAR to start 2026. Washington gave up one of their top weapons in Jose Ferrer last season to bring in Harry Ford. Why keep Ford in Triple-A when their major league catcher is struggling?

9. Ryan River

MLB: Spring Training-Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona Diamondbacks
Matt Kartoziyan-Imagen Images

Ryan Rivers is 27 years old and is projected to be a big league reliever. MLB Pipeline still likes him so much that he is ranked as the 100th best prospect in baseball. The Dodgers have been wasting a potentially high-leverage relief arm in Triple-A, and it seems like it’s time to get him in the show.

10. Colt Emerson

MLB: Chicago Cubs in Spring Training-Seattle Mariners
alan henry-image images

Colt Emerson would be higher on this list if there was a clear path to playing in the major leagues, but there isn’t. JP Crawford, Brandon Donovan and Cole Young have locked down the infield, and the Mariners don’t want to call on Emerson just to hide on the bench. At the same time, for a good prospect like Emerson, you find a way for him to find playing time. If it means moving the defense around, that might be what Seattle needs to do.

History of the Rise of the Senators and Fall of the Red Wings

Well friends, it’s official: the Ottawa Senators are headed to the playoffs! On January 24, they finished in last place in the Atlantic Division and second in the Eastern Conference. At the time, the Detroit Red Wings led the Atlantic and were tied for most points in the East. There was a difference of 16 points between the two teams.

Now, with the Sens up by five points on the Wings, Detroit is officially out of the playoffs for the 10th consecutive season. As much as this story is about the Senators’ dominance over the last two and a half months, the Red Wings’ downfall deserves to be discussed as much. Let’s get into the details.

Read more: It’s time for Jordan Spence to extend

Ottawa Senators by the numbers

The Senators’ 4–1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on January 24 left them in sole possession of 15th place in the Eastern Conference. That’s when his season changed. have a look:

  • first 51 games: 23-21-7, 3.22 goals/game, 3.39 goals against/game, 22.9 PP%, 71.8 PK%
  • last 29 games: 20-6-3, 3.62 goals/game, 2.31 goals against/game, 24.4 PP%, 83.6 PK%

Let’s break down these numbers among all the NHL teams:

  • first 51 games: 25th in points %, 12th in goals/game, 28th in goals against/game, 10th in PP%, 31st in PK%.
  • last 29 games:T-1st in points %, 4th in goals/game, 1st in goals against/game, 10th in PP%, 5th in PK%.

Obviously, it was a change of the entire team. Sure, his goalscoring and power play were solid in the first 51 games, but those numbers have reached even greater heights since then. Goal prevention is where the Senators have improved even more dramatically. A lot of it has to do with their goal setting. To keep an eye:

  • first 51 games: .865 Team SV% (32nd in the NHL)
  • last 29 games: .900 Team SV% (7th in the NHL)

The .865 SV% paced the Senators for the lowest team SV% in the NHL since the 1993–94 Ottawa Senators. Keep in mind, that was the Senators’ second year of existence. Individually, Linus Ullmark went from .881 SV% to .904 SV%. They have 14 wins since returning from their leave of absence on January 31 for the league lead.

Detroit Red Wings by the numbers

Now for the fall part of the equation. The Red Wings defeated the Winnipeg Jets 5–1 on January 24 to tie the Carolina Hurricanes for most points in the East. Sure, the Red Wings played an extra game, but they were undoubtedly in a great spot to end their long playoff drought. Well, so much for that! Let’s take a look at the figures:

  • first 53 games: 32-16-5, 3.11 goals/game, 2.96 goals against/game, 24.7 PP%, 79.3 PK%
  • last 27 games: 9-14-4, 2.59 goals/game, 3.15 goals against/game, 19.7 PP%, 73.5 PK%

And now for a league-wide comparison of those numbers:

  • first 53 games: 4th in points %, 17th in goals/game, 13th in goals against/game, 6th in PP%, 18th in PK%.
  • last 27 games: 28th in points %, 30th in goals/game, 22nd in goals against/game, 22nd in PP%, 27th in PK%.

This is the exact opposite of the senators. They lagged behind in virtually every category. Clearly they relied too heavily on their power play, which held back just like every other part of their game. The Red Wings didn’t just become a mediocre team, they became one of the worst teams in the NHL. Keep in mind, they were buyers on deadline. Here’s what their deadline acquisition did for them:

  • Justin Faulk: 15 games, 4 goals, 6 points, -3, 20:16 time on ice/game
  • david perron: 14 games, 2 goals, 2 points, -9, 13:42 ice time/game

The Senators were the ones who traded Perón to the Red Wings. He was replaced by Warren Foegele, who scored 5 goals and 7 points in 19 games with Ottawa. It certainly wasn’t just Faulk and Perron who caused Detroit’s decline. For example, Lucas Raymond had a dramatic fall. He scored 58 points in his first 51 games, but has scored only 18 points in his last 27 games.

defining game

Let’s go back to March 24. The Senators were in Detroit to face a Red Wings team that was one point ahead of them. These were the problems:

  • They were playing for the second straight night, having played against the Rangers in New York the night before.
  • They were without Jake Sanderson, Thomas Chabot and Nick Jensen on defense.
  • The Red Wings had won all three meetings up to that point in the season.

Any back-to-back is tough, but playing both games on the road in two different cities, as well as missing both Chabot and Sanderson, made this feel like a scheduled defeat for the Senators. Additionally, depth D-men Dennis Gilbert and Lassie Thomson were out, forcing the Sens to call up forwards Jorian Donovan and Carter Yakemchuk to play their first career games.

outcome? The Senators’ incredible 3–2 win moved them ahead of the Red Wings in the standings for the first time since December 5. The Senators never let the Red Wings pass after that. The Red Wings suffered several tough losses in a row to keep them out of the playoffs, but considering the circumstances, this was the worst.

final thoughts

There came a time when it felt like none of the teams fighting for the last few playoff spots in the East were going to lose completely. Of course, the Red Wings were the exception. They lost 8 of their last 11 and 18 of their last 27 and found themselves out of the playoff picture.

Meanwhile, the senators never gave up. They played 20 games without Brady Tkachuk early in the season. He endured nearly 50 games of terrible goaltending. Linus Ullmark took a partial leave of absence during the year. Jake Sanderson missed 13 games. After the Olympic break, they used 12 defensemen. In the end, their resilience has been rewarded with a second consecutive trip to the playoffs.

These two teams have shown a lot of disdain for each other over the past few years as they have tried to work their way back to contender status. Obviously, senators have the upper hand. Meanwhile, the Red Wings must figure out what to do next after a terrible collapse that saw them miss the playoffs once again.

Elite receiver could fall to Patriots at pick 31 after new draft rumors

The New England Patriots are in desperate need of a No. 1 receiver for the 2026 season, and it could fall into their kitty in Round 1 of this month’s NFL Draft.

While the Patriots’ offense took a notable step forward in 2025, it was mostly due to the MVP-level play of young quarterback Drake Mays. But as the competition became tougher in the postseason, the need for the team to bring in more weapons for him became apparent.

To start the offseason, Mayes’ goal of getting more impact targets became difficult when he parted ways with Stefon Diggs, his top receiver from last season. However, in free agency, the team addressed the growing problem by signing veteran Romeo Doubs from the Green Bay Packers. But there is no clear evidence that he can be a legitimate WR1 in 2026.

With the top free agent receivers off the board, the Patriots now need to look to this month’s NFL Draft to get their budding superstar QB a better target for next season. However, the WR position is always a target for teams at the start of the event, and previous mock drafts suggested that the best three in this year’s class – Carnell Tate, Makai Lemon and Jordan Tyson – would be off the board in the first 20 selections.

Will Jordan Tyson still be on the board this late in Round 1?

Patriot
Mark J. rebilas-imagen images

Well, probably not. According to ESPN NFL expert Matt Miller, Tyson is now likely to fall out of the top 20 because “his hamstring problems are of concern to teams.” Furthermore, his eight declines in 2024 also worry interested franchises. Football Insider said Indiana’s Omar Cooper Jr. could surpass him and be the third WR selected in Round 1.

The Patriots should also be concerned about injury and decline issues. However, he has been in the debate as the best pass catcher in 2026 for several reasons. He is an excellent route runner who should make an immediate impact in the NFL. He is in good shape at 6 feet 2 inches and 200 pounds. Additionally, he has shown a strong ability to consistently beat defenders for balls in the air.

If Tyson is still on the board when the Patriots are on the board at 31 — which is now very possible — the Patriots should and likely will jump at the chance to select him.

Devils erase three-goal deficit, fall to Canadiens in shootout

If the New Jersey Devils had made the playoffs this season, the series against the Montreal Canadiens could have been really fun.

The Devils hosted the Habs at the Prudential Center on Saturday in the first match of a home-and-home situation of the weekend, losing 4-3 in the first game via a shootout.

Canadian fans arrived in large numbers in Newark, New Jersey, and were unruly before warmups even began.

That’s partly because it looks like Montreal will go to the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and partly because it’s to see Cole Caufield score his 50th goal of the season.

When the puck dropped, Caufield was pounded on the half break – an early opportunity to reach the 50-goal plateau. However, Johnathan Kovacevic’s backcheck was too much for the Habs forward, and he never got a shot on goal.

The Devils then pressed Jacob Dobbs in waves, pushing the Canadiens into their own zone.

However, it was the Canadiens who struck first when Jaden Struble drove into the Devils slot and received a pass from Caufield to give Montreal a 1–0 lead.

The second period also started like the first. The Devils were heavy in the Montreal zone, pressuring Dobbs with abundant zone time and opportunities during the first seven minutes of the middle frame.

However, Jonas Seigenthaler’s tripping penalty at the 7:40 mark of the period sent the Devils to their first penalty kill. Ivan Demidov doubled the Habs’ lead on another Caufield primary assist, receiving a back door pass and making the game 2–0 on a one-time chance.

Just over a minute later, as the power was restored, Lane Hutson tripled Montreal’s lead to give the Habs a 3–0 lead.

However, the Devils finally struck back at the 6:52 mark of the second. Dawson Mercer drove the Devils’ net, and from an impossible angle, sliced the puck over Dobbs’ left shoulder and past his left ear, cutting the Canadiens’ lead to 3–1 with very little visible twine.

Despite the Devils being at a disadvantage, Jack Hughes and Jasper Bratt lined up for a 2-on-1 in the Montreal end.

The Devils suffered a prolonged loss after high-sticking Zachary Bolduc left Brendan Dillon whistled for a double minor.

Although Dobbs made the save, Jack and Bratt quickly went on another 2-on-1 breakaway after a bad Montreal turnover and this time, Jack scored his 25th shorthanded goal of the season to cut Montreal’s lead to 3–2.

The Dillon penalty went over, as did one shortly afterward in the second period, and New Jersey entered the third period trailing by a goal.

The Devils put the pedal to the metal in the third period. It took 17:44 to get going on offense, but Timo Meier finally made the breakthrough and erased the three-goal deficit to tie the game with three minutes to go at the end of the third period.

The lead was not enough in regulation in Game 76 of the season, and the Devils and Canadiens went to overtime. And despite an entertaining extra period, it was not enough and the game required a shootout.

After five rounds, the Canadiens won extra points 4–3 on the stick of Zachary Bolduc.

Jake Allen made 26 saves on 29 shots through 65 minutes of regulation and overtime, handing them their 17th loss of the season.

Key takeaways after Siren’s third-round fall against Victoire

Despite dominating the first period, the New York Sirens couldn’t get the job done in the latest PWHL Takeover Tour game in Detroit on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Montreal Victoire 3-1. Montreal scored three unanswered goals in the third period for a strong comeback victory in the first nationally-televised PWHL game.

Victoire improved to 46 points (12-4-2-5) and extended its points streak to 11 games (7-2-2-0). They are two points behind the Boston Fleet for first place overall in the PWHL.

New York missed a chance to move ahead of the fourth-place Toronto Raptors after Boston beat Toronto 4-0 on Friday. After losing their fourth consecutive competition, the Sirens remain four behind Sceptres in the standings with 27 points (8-0-3-12); Each team has seven games left in the regular season.

Katherine Dubois took the lead in the third period with two goals just 4:44 apart. Alternate captain Laura Stacey added some relief, extending the lead just 49 seconds after Dubois’ second tally. Victoire goalkeeper Anne-Renée Desbiens took over the rest, allowing one or fewer goals for the 13th time this season.

Sirens goaltender Kayleigh Osborne suffered her fourth consecutive loss despite a strong start, stopping Montreal’s first 17 shots. In her league-leading 22nd appearance of the season she finished with 26 saves on 29 attempts.

New York kept things quiet for Osborne by outshooting Montreal 11–2 in the opening frame. Jade Downey-Landry recorded Montreal’s first shot at 1:58, but Victoire went 14:26 without another shot until Michigan native Shian Darkangelo ended the drought at 16:24.

The Sirens took the lead into the first half for the first time since March 8, thanks to Casey O’Brien’s sixth goal of the season. Jaime Bourbonnais’ one-timer went past Desbiens, and O’Brien crashed the net to bury the loose puck at 9:09.

O’Brien extended his point streak to three games. The 2025 No. 3 overall pick leads all PWHL rookies with 16 points (six goals, 10 assists).

Coach Greg Fargo offered after the game, “I thought today was a different story for us than the last few games.” “We got off to a great start. I thought our first period was as good as we’ve played.”

Montreal took the momentum in the second round by defeating New York 15–7. The Sirens maintained the lead thanks to the composed play of Osborne, who stopped Lena Ljungblom on a breakaway and denied Hayley Scamurra twice in a row. Desbiens was just as quick, stopping O’Brien on two breakaways.

New York nearly took a 2–0 lead at 7:54 when Kristin O’Neal deflected a point shot from Micah Zandi-Hart, but the officials ruled out a clear goal for high-sticking after review.

Victoire maintained its lead in the third period – only this time, it showed on the scoreboard.

Dubois took advantage of a miscue by Siren rookie Anna Bergman to equalize at 1:54. The 2025 fifth-round pick (No. 33 overall) sent a cross-ice pass straight to the stick of Victoire rookie Natalie Mlinkova, who quickly led the Montreal Rush and knocked the puck back to Dubois in the high slot. Bergman then collided with Siren forward Claire Degeroge as Dubois stretched it to the left point and fired a wrist shot over Osborne’s blocker.

Dubois gave Montreal its first lead of the day at 6:40 of the third minute, when a slick backhand feed from Darkangelo set up the 30-year-old for a one-touch shot through Osborne’s five-hole. Stacey immediately redirected defender Kati Tabin’s long shot to make it 3–1 at 7:29.

Victoire Fourcheque suppressed any possibility of the siren’s return. New York managed one shot after Montreal took the lead – a Sarah Fillear wrister at 19:47 broke a 14:06 shotless stretch.

“Momentum is a funny thing,” Fargo reflected. “You get a little bit, and I think Montreal started to get a little bit more as that second [period] Close, and they took it to third for good. Some mistakes hurt us.”

Sirens lost for the second time this season after scoring the first goal (6-0-0-2). New York’s points percentage dropped to .391, more than 50 percentage points below the fourth-place Sceptres (.449) and fifth-place Ottawa Charge (.455).

New York was without rookie star Kristina Kaltunkova, who missed her second consecutive game with an unspecified injury. The 2025 No. 1 overall pick is day by day.

Detroit native Elle Hartje joined Fillier and O’Brien in New York’s starting lineup in front of a crowd of 15,938 at Little Caesars Arena. He won four of six face-offs and recorded one shot on goal in 15:15 of ice time.

“It’s been great to be home. That’s a hard question to answer right now,” Hartje said after the game. “Obviously, it’s about hockey, so not getting the ‘W’ is pretty disappointing, but it’s great to see Hockeytown represented all the time.”

Victoire: The siren failed in the third period against the takeaways

New York flips the script on first period problems

The struggles of the Sirens’ first period are well documented. New York entered the opening frame on Saturday with the most goals scored (26) — an even greater increase from the minus-eight goal differential since the Olympic break.

They flipped the script against Victoire thanks to a strong forecheck and impressive play from their top forward line of Fillier, Anne Cherkovski and O’Brien.

“I don’t think we need to change anything,” O’Brien insisted during the first intermission.

This is easy to say but not easy to do. New York was outrebounded 27–13 in the final 40 minutes, having only six shots and three scoring chances in the third.

“Some parts of our game that we liked – the way we were handling the puck – as the game went on, we started to get away from it a little bit for one reason or another,” Fargo explained. “We have to find a way to match and exceed that effort moving forward.”

Despite strong offensive pressure out of the gate, the Sirens failed to finish second behind reigning PWHL Goalkeeper of the Year Desbiens. New York was clearly frustrated when Dubois tied the score in the third and offered little resistance in the face of a heavy Montreal forecheck.

“When we have a tough game or something that ends up in the back of your net, we’ve got to find a way to respond a little better in those moments, because bad things are going to happen,” Fargo said. “we know that.”

The sirens are still chasing ‘the full 60 minutes of hockey’

There are some serious issues in New York right now, but continuity is key.

O’Brien said after the game, “I don’t think we’ve played a full 60 minutes of Siren hockey in a long time.” “And we know that if we do that, we’ll win.”

Whether it’s a slow start or a late-game collapse, the end result has been all too familiar lately. And at this stage of the season, the Sirens cannot afford to leave points on the table.

“I think the important thing for us is to stay connected to our game on a more consistent basis,” Fargo said. “Playing a complete game with good habits, great structure and great energy – that’s what it takes to win at this level. You can see that the difference between winning and losing in the PWHL is really small.”

Even as the Sirens entered the Olympic break in a playoff spot, questions arose from time to time about their consistency, especially with such a young roster. Those concerns only grew with this second half’s decline.

Fargo added, “We have to put together 60 minutes of hockey with our habits and the details of our game.” “The team is working through it. They want to win. We all want to win, and it’s going to change for us. We just have to stay on track with what we’re doing.”

New York doesn’t have much time to right the ship.

Do you get déjà vu?

Montreal Victoire celebrates a 6-2 win over New York Sirens.
Courtesy of PWHL

The Sirens lost six out of seven games after the Olympic break and nine out of 10 through January 20. If this vibe sounds oddly familiar, you’re not imagining things.

In 2024–25, the Sirens lost nine consecutive games (0-0-3-6) from January 31 to March 5. They finished the season last in the PWHL, missing the playoffs by seven points.

This year’s team still has a chance to avoid that fate, but it will need a sharp turnaround to do so.

“Obviously, nobody likes to lose, so I’m not happy about it, but I don’t think anybody is disappointed,” O’Brien said. “We all know what a great team we have.”

If the Sirens look for a spark to break out of this slump, they will have to find it on home ice. New York returns to the Prudential Center on Wednesday to host the Minnesota Frost before Saturday’s matchup against the Seattle Torrent in front of a Madison Square Garden crowd.

Despite strong first period, Devils fall to Carolina Hurricanes again

For 20 minutes, the New Jersey Devils looked like a red-hot team capable of competing with any opponent in the NHL.

Nevertheless, in a result that seemed very familiar to Devils fans, the Carolina Hurricanes came back strongly with five consecutive goals in their 5–2 victory, which snapped the Devils’ two-game winning streak.

Evgeni Dadonov and Timo Meier each scored, the second of which came from Dawson Mercer in his 400th consecutive game. Jacob Markstrom made 29 saves in the loss.

Carolina scored three times in the second period, led by former Devils forward Taylor Hall, who had two assists. Nikolaj Ehlers also had a goal and an assist.

The Hurricanes won their 12th consecutive home game against the Devils, adding six Stanley Cup playoff wins over the past four seasons.

“I think this group needs to heal some wounds along the way,” Devils forward Connor Brown said after the game. “As soon as you let one in and get one on their heels, that’s where their system takes over. That’s the type of game they hunt.”

Devils had a strong performance in the first round in Carolina.

The Devils couldn’t have asked for a better start to the game.

They kept the shot count close throughout the frame and played the proverbial solid road game. Markstrom made eight saves, and they were mostly from outside, as the Devils gave up just 0.62 expected goals and two high-danger chances.

Despite two failed power plays in the first period, New Jersey also finished first on the board. Captain Nico Hischier hit Mercer with a 100-foot stretch pass and Mercer beat Carolina defenseman Sean Walker and found Meyer for a tap-in goal.

It was Meyer’s 22nd goal of the season. He has scored in three consecutive games and has five in New Jersey’s last seven games. Meyer now has eight goals in 15 games since the Olympic break ended.

Satan came unmasked in the second period

Failing to handle the Hurricanes’ surge has been a hallmark of the Devils’ struggles in Carolina, and Saturday was no different.

Carolina outscored the Devils 15–5 in the second period, and had a 32–13 shot-attempt advantage in the middle frame. Yet, according to Devils coach Sheldon Keefe, the whole thing backfired when Lenny Haminaho took the team’s only penalty of the game, a minor tripping at 8:27 of the second.

“We were definitely right there in the game,” Keefe said. “Up until the penalty take, I liked our second period. We didn’t get a lot of shots on net, but we were in our half of the ice. We just didn’t have the stamina or energy to keep up with it.”

Ehlers tied the score by beating Markstrom from the right circle on the power play, capping a typical passing play. Then Carolina’s rush got busy, energizing the Hurricanes’ offensive anticipation and forcing the Devils into mistakes.

“There’s no doubt that our bench sagged a little bit after we scored the first goal,” Keefe said. “It’s more than just the opponent. You know how hard it is to score. You’ve got the lead, you’ve given them life. The crowd just comes alive. It’s everything.”

Shane Gostisbier’s aggressive puck at the offensive blue line forced a turnover, creating a two-on-one situation for Jackson Blake and Logan Stankoven, and Blake got past Jonas Seigenthaler and beat Markstrom, giving Carolina the lead at 13:48.

“Punting against this team is exactly what they want,” Keefe said. “They drop it in the neutral zone, they come straight at you and it’s wave after wave. We’ve got to make a play. We’ve got to get it off the boards against these guys.

Jordan Staal scored just 95 seconds later, redirecting Ehlers’ shot after Simon Nemec’s soft back-handed clearing attempt, giving Carolina a 3–1 lead and effectively putting the game on ice.

“We had time to make a play and we panicked and threw it against the wall and that gave them an opportunity,” Keefe said. “Those are two big plays that end up on net.”

Kuemper records shutout as Vancouver Canucks fall 4‑0 to Los Angeles Kings

Darcy Kuemper stopped all 19 shots to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings at Rogers Arena on a brutal Thursday night.

According to NHL.com, the win snapped a four-game losing streak for Los Angeles and moved the Kings to within one point of the second Western Conference wild-card spot.

For the Kings, it was the consecutive wins needed for a team in the playoff race. Kuemper’s clean sheet was his 3rd of the season and the 39th shutout of his career.

For the Canucks, it looked like the franchise going through the rounds holding the rope. In fact, the score could have been worse. Kevin Lankinen made 34 saves, and that number tells only a part of it.

NHL: Los Angeles Kings at Vancouver Canucks
bob frid-images

The Kings were bigger, heavier and more direct, and it continued to force the Canucks into defensive changes that made the shutout inevitable.

sovereign king

At 17:34 of the first period, Scott Laughton opened the scoring on a power play with a deflection in front, following a byfield shot from the right circle.

Earlier, Kuemper had put up a big stop on Teddy Blueger in the slot, and on reflection, that was the beginning and end of the night for the Canucks.

Moore made it 2-0 just 1:21 in on another tip puck across the crease. Artemi Panarin made it 3–0 with 39 seconds remaining after Adrian Kempe forced Jake DeBrusk into a neutral-zone turnover.

The Kings outshot the Canucks 32–12 over two periods, and Canucks coach Adam Foote said Los Angeles came out “big, heavy on the puck, and mean and hungry”. This looks exactly like the game was supposed to look like.

The Canucks never created enough offensive-zone time, and when they finally got a decent look late, Kuemper put aside a Drew O’Connor redirect from the top of the crease.

Soon after, Byfield finished it off with a goal into the empty net. Ordinary hockey defeated hopeful hockey.

familiar ending

The Canucks have now lost four in a row and end their eight-game homestand at 2-6-0. They have shut out 14 of their last 17, and it was the sixth time the club was shut out this season, including a fifth home shutout that set a franchise record.

For Canucks fans, now comes the hard part. It’s not just about losing. What little room this team leaves for itself once the game starts to tilt in the wrong direction.

Senators earn point, but fall to Penguins in shootout

The Senators have to hope they don’t miss the playoffs by a point. In tonight’s overtime, they had one great chance after another, but couldn’t find a way to beat Stuart Skinner. They then led by one goal after the first period in the shootout, but the next two Penguins shooters scored as Stützle and Pinto both missed to end the game 4–3 for the Penguins. Let’s get into the details.

Ullmark shines through Senators’ defensive struggles

This is because the Senators will have a tough time without guys like Sanderson, Chabot and Jensen in their lineup. Tonight, he gave up 38 shots, the most he has given up all season. The second period was particularly difficult, with the Sens falling 16–6. That period ended with Ullmark making some big saves to keep the game tied. He kept the Sens in this game with several great saves, including a breakaway toe save in overtime.

It’s clear that Travis Green doesn’t trust Donovan right now. He played just 9:22 tonight. Yakemchuk was used a good amount tonight, playing 17:42 minutes and once again showing himself to be a threat offensively. Nonetheless, the quartet of Kleven, Zub, Spence and Matinpalo have worked extensively. Kleven, in particular, has seen his workload increase dramatically. He played 27 minutes tonight after playing a career-high 28:11 games in the previous game. With the news that Thomas Chabot is out for the next 4-8 weeks with his arm injury, Jake Sanderson may not be back soon.

Batherson scored twice again

From a goal total perspective, here are Batherson’s last 14 games:

  • 2, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 2, 0, 2, 0, 0, 0, 2, 2

He doesn’t just score one goal in a game! His two goals tonight give him 29 points on the season, a new career high. He will need five points in the final 10 games to equal his career-high of 68 points last season.

additional comments

I’ve seen Eric Carlson put on a show like Tonight many times. However, it’s not as much fun when it’s against the Senators. Karlsson is the main reason the Penguins remained in the playoffs last month. He has scored 21 points in the month of March. Only Nikita Kucherov has more than 25. Nice to see Brady Tkachuk deliver some big hits tonight. He finished the game with six hits overall, equaling his season high. After a brutal stretch in which the Senators played six games in nine days, including two back-to-back situations, the Senators finally got some rest. Like. He will be off for two days before playing in Tampa Bay against the Lightning on Saturday.

Caps fall flat against Blues

It certainly wasn’t the result the Washington Capitals (35-28-9) wanted. They fell flat and suffered a 3-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues (29-30-11) on Tuesday night.

It was the Capitals’ first stop on a three-game road trip as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive. Unfortunately, Tuesday’s shutout loss certainly wasn’t that.

The Capitals looked promising early, but could not locate St. Louis goaltender Joel Hofer. The team’s power-play problems also continued.

The highlight for the Capitals was when they went toe-to-toe with the Blues. Ryan Leonard’s aggressive attitude continued as he dropped the gloves with Otto Steinberg.

Later in the game, Pierre-Luc Dubois received a five-minute match penalty for fouling Robert Thomas. Many people questioned whether the fine was too high.

The Capitals’ regulation loss hurts more when you realize that Boston, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and the Islanders all lost on the same night. Washington’s playoff chances are shrinking by the minute.

Next, the Capitals will head to the Rocky Mountains to face Utah on Thursday night.

capitals analysis

From the moment they took the ice, the Capitals just took off on Tuesday. They were unable to score on Hoffer as the St. Louis netminder stopped all 21 shots.

What’s worse is that the Capitals could only muster six shots on goal in the first 40 minutes. An additional 14 in the third period ultimately were not enough.

The ongoing power-play problems continued as the Capitals went 0-2 on the night. The team was unable to create high quality chances.

The Blues went ahead 1–0 in the middle frame as Jimmy Snuggerud fired a one-timer from the left circle.

Shortly after that goal, Leonard took a high hit from Stenberg and a scuffle broke out between the two players. The 21-year-old tried to breathe some life into his team as he now has two matches left in his career.

In the final period, Stenberg doubled St. Louis’ lead when he caught Logan Thompson in front.

Down 2-0, Dubois caught Thomas and threw him hard to the ice. Thomas appeared to be badly hurt, and was given a match penalty for intent to injure Dubois.

Late in the game, Jordan Kirou recorded an empty-netter to complete the Blues’ shutout victory.

capitals report card

Team: D-

Absolutely flat performance from the Capitals, especially on attack. However, things went a little haywire in St. Louis.

Capitals Power Play: F

Once again, the Capitals could not advance on the man advantage. The team failed to create chances and fell 0-2.

Ryan Leonard: B

Leonard tried to breathe some life into the Capitals by dropping the gloves with Stenberg. It looks like the 21-year-old is learning hard from Tom Wilson.

Logan Thompson: B

Thompson was influential despite being disappointed by his teammates. He stopped 24 of 26 shots against the Blues.

Ivan Miroshnichenko: C+

Miroshnichenko stepped in for the injured Ethan Frank in the fourth row. He hit a shot off the post after a feed from Hendricks Lapierre.

Caps fall to Bruins in long shootout

The Washington Capitals (33-27-8) played longer than necessary on Saturday afternoon. They hung with the Boston Bruins (37-23-6) but lost 3-2 in a shootout that lasted nine rounds.

The Capitals needed a win to stay tied with Boston for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Washington finished with one point, despite needing two points.

The Capitals blue line took a big step to keep hope alive. Matt Roy led the scoring, while Rasmus Sandin had a multi-point game.

However, Boston never trailed as Charlie McAvoy recorded two goals. But neither team was able to score on many power play opportunities.

The game required overtime and then a shootout, which lasted nine rounds. Despite the Capitals’ best efforts, Fraser Minton scored the game-winner for Boston.

Next, the Capitals continue their four-game homestand by hosting Ottawa on Wednesday.

capitals analysis

After a scoreless opening period, Roy scored to put the Capitals ahead 1–0 75 seconds into the middle frame. The 31-year-old blueliner fired an 86 MPH shot past Jeremy Swayman into the top corner.

Roy generally looked impressive on the ice. The defensemen moved the puck well, and made smart reads at both ends of the ice.

Sandin also played well and recorded an assist on Roy’s tally. The 26-year-old player then scored an own goal at the beginning of the third.

With the score tied at 1–1, Sandin made the score 2–1 with a knuckle puck from the point. The blueliner also showed impressive two-way play and grabbed four blocks.

However, Boston’s blue line came through thanks to two goals from McAvoy. The Olympic gold medalist hit a point shot to equalize in the second, then deflected a shot to make it 2-2.

With the score tied late, the Capitals had two power play opportunities to try to take the lead. Unfortunately, the team’s problems continued on the man advantage.

Things got worse when Connor McMichael took a late penalty and the Capitals were shorthanded with more than a minute remaining. Thankfully, Boston did not score while their power play extended to OT.

The capital penalty kill intensified early in this period. Tom Wilson and Anthony Beauvillier were both in the box, but the team successfully killed 39 seconds of 5-on-3.

Despite the loss, Logan Thompson put in a remarkable performance, stopping 32 of 34 shots on net. He also made eight saves in the skills competition.

capitals report card

Team: B-

The Capitals tried their best to keep the game competitive in regulation, overtime and the shootout. Sadly, he could not win.

Rasmus Sandin: A+

Sandin had a multi-point day with a goal and an assist. The blueliner got a lot of good looks and got high-danger chances while also playing well on defense.

Matt Roy: A

Roy opened the scoring 75 seconds into the second period. He recorded his first goal since on November 17 versus Los Angeles.

Capitals Special Teams: C+

The Capitals’ power play once again struggled and their score became 0-3. However, the penalty kill was much better, including a 5-on-3 in the third.

Logan Thompson: B

Thompson made 32 saves in the loss. The netminder also stopped eight shots in the shootout.

Why Garnacho is Struggling Under Erik ten Hag: The Rise and Fall of United’s Star turn

Why Garnacho is Struggling Under Erik ten Hag: The Rise and Fall of United’s Star Turn

For Manchester United fans in India, watching football live on late weekends often brings a mix of adrenaline and frustration. At the heart of this emotional rollercoaster is Alejandro Garnacho. Once hailed as the “Crown Jewel” of the post-Ronaldo era, the Argentine winger currently seems to be a shadow of the player who stunned the world with an overhead kick against Everton last season.

As the pressure mounts on manager Erik ten Hag, the spotlight has turned to why his most explosive talent is failing to fire. Is it tactical rigidity, a dip in confidence, or the weight of expectations?

The Tactical Dilemma: Left vs. Right

One of the primary reasons for Garnacho’s recent struggles is his positioning. Naturally a left-sided winger who loves to cut inside on his right foot, Garnacho has frequently been deployed on the right flank to accommodate Marcus Rashford.

While he showed versatility last season, the current campaign highlights his discomfort. On the right, his crossing remains inconsistent, and he loses the “inside-forward” goal threat that made him a nightmare for defenders. Under Ten Hag’s current system, the lack of an overlapping full-back (due to injuries to Luke Shaw) means Garnacho is often isolated against two defenders.

The “Impact Sub” vs. Starter Debate

Garnacho’s rise was fueled by his electric energy off the bench. Against tired legs, his raw pace was a cheat code. However, as a consistent starter, he is finding it difficult to manage the pace of the full 90 minutes. Opposing managers in the Premier League have now “scouted” him; they show him the touchline and negate his ability to drift into central pockets.

Discipline and the Ten Hag Philosophy

Erik ten Hag is known for his “standards.” We saw this with Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo. Recently, social media activity and visible frustration when substituted have suggested a slight friction between the youngster and the manager. Ten Hag demands defensive tracking and tactical discipline—areas where Garnacho, a flair player, occasionally lapses. When these defensive duties aren’t met, the “Star Turn” often finds himself back on the bench, disrupting his rhythm.

How to Watch Manchester United Live in India

If you are looking to catch football live and track Garnacho’s progress, the Premier League is broadcast in India on the Star Sports Network. For those who prefer digital streaming, Disney+ Hotstar provides every Manchester United match live with high-definition coverage and expert analysis.

Conclusion

Alejandro Garnacho remains one of the brightest talents in world football, but his current slump is a combination of tactical shifts and the natural growing pains of a young player. For Erik ten Hag, the challenge lies in restoring Garnacho’s confidence without sacrificing the team’s defensive balance. Whether Garnacho can reclaim his “Star Turn” status or becomes another “what if” story depends on how he adapts to the rigors of being a marked man in the toughest league in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Why is Garnacho not scoring as many goals this season?

Garnacho is currently dealing with a lack of service from the midfield and is frequently being played out of his natural left-wing position, affecting his clinical finishing.

2. What is the best way to watch Premier League football live in India?

The best way is through Disney+ Hotstar for mobile and smart TV streaming, or Star Sports Select 1 and 2 for television viewers.

3. Is there a rift between Erik ten Hag and Garnacho?

While there have been minor social media controversies, there is no official report of a fallout. However, Ten Hag has been critical of Garnacho’s decision-making in the final third recently.

4. Can Garnacho play as a central striker?

While he has the pace, he lacks the physical strength and hold-up play required for a central role in Ten Hag’s system, making him most effective on the wings.

Golden Knights can’t stop bleeding, fall to wild on deadline day

What do the Vegas Golden Knights have in common with someone who takes blood thinners? Once bleeding starts it may be difficult to stop.

All season long, the Golden Knights have suffered from an uncharacteristic problem: they tend to spiral after allowing a goal. That’s exactly what happened when they hosted the Minnesota Wild at T-Mobile Arena on Friday. The Wild scored three quick goals in the second period, which proved too much for the Golden Knights to overcome in the 4–2 loss.

The first round was equal. The Golden Knights got off to a good start, shutting down the Minnesota power play and defeating the Wild 8–6. Colton Sissons got two breakaway chances, but Phillip Gustavsson shut the door both times.

Except for a three-minute gap early in the second period, the Golden Knights were the better team. They outshot the Wild 10-7 and created five high-danger scoring chances while allowing only one.

The problem is that during that 3:07 exception, Minnesota scored three times.

The Wild broke the ice at 5:18 of the second period. Noah Hanifin couldn’t connect with Mitch Marner on a no-look backhander, and Matt Zuccarello raced to the loose puck. Zuccarello slipped between Hanifin and Rasmus Andersson, drove in alone, and completed the breakaway.

The Wild doubled their lead at 8:25 of the second minute. Yakov Trenin had the puck behind the goal and found Daniil Yurov for a one-timer. Akira Schmid made the save, but the rebound went to Zack Bogosian above the right circle and the defenseman deflected the shot past the Rockets.

Just 18 seconds later, the Wild added to their lead. Brock Faber hit a shot from the point and Michael McCarron redirected it home.

After McCarron’s goal, the Golden Knights finally managed to stop the bleeding and not dig their hole any deeper. They renewed their attack, but Filip Gustavsson was exceptional.

As has often been the case this season, the Golden Knights ultimately finished in third place. Pavel Dorofeyev scored a penalty just 1:22 into the period, giving his team its first power play of the night.

The Golden Knights scored their third goal at 2:17, less than a minute into the power play. Jack Eichel delivered a pass through the middle and Pavel Dorofeyev found the winger’s 30th goal of the season.

Solving Filip Gustavsson did wonders for the team’s confidence and the Golden Knights continued their attack. He recorded 14 shots and created 13 scoring chances in the third period; However, their desperate offense resulted in the Wild having 10 scoring chances.

The Wild took advantage of one of those scoring opportunities and restored their two-goal lead at 15:42 of the third. Michael McCarron passed the puck out to Vladimir Tarasenko, who raced up the ice on a 3-on-1 with Yakov Trenin and Jared Spurgeon. Tarasenko entered the field, played catch with Spurgeon and fired a shot that went past Akira Schmidt short-side.

The Golden Knights refused to go quietly and responded with 3:05 remaining in regulation. Tomas Hertl pressured Kirill Kaprizov under the goal line and forced a turnover. Pavel Dorofeyev sent a centering pass to Mitch Marner, who redirected it to Filip Gustavsson.

Despite pulling Akira Schmid for an extra attacker, the Golden Knights failed to generate the expected looks and lost 4–2.

“It’s pretty much the same,” head coach Bruce Cassidy said after the team’s loss. “We fall behind. Our stretch is very bad, and one becomes two and becomes three… It should be better now, with a more experienced group.”

“It’s hard not to fall in love” – Bournemouth man reveals how Bill Foley convinced him to join

Bournemouth’s Managing Director of Professional Football Tiago Pinto has revealed how owner Bill Foley convinced him to join the club in 2024.

Rivista Andesi today had an interview with the 41-year-old. He discusses various aspects of life at Bournemouth, including his relationship with Foley.

The American businessman is the owner and chairman of Chery after completing the acquisition in 2022.

Bournemouth is now one of several clubs under his leadership. Their network also includes FC Lorient, Auckland FC and Moreirance FC.

Bournemouth Development

His ownership has seen rapid growth for the Cherries, particularly under manager Andoni Ierola. Sport Witness has already covered Pinto’s feelings about him today.

He was the first big-ticket player to join the club in 2023, with Pinto making the move a year later.

He is in charge of the club’s wider football strategy and multi-club network. His arrival was part of a wider boardroom structure following Richard Hughes’ departure to Liverpool.

He joins Bournemouth after previous roles as Director of Football at Benfica and Sporting Director at Roma. And this was largely due to Foley, who completely convinced Pinto to take on his new role.

“In February 2024, I left Roma, and in the next three or four months, I wanted to rest a bit and refresh,” he said.

“Bournemouth CEO Neil Blake, who I was in touch with when we had talks with Vina and Justin Kluivert, called me to ask if I would be interested in a conversation. My first conversation was with him, the second with Bill.

“That video call with Foley is something I will never forget. After 10-15 minutes of conversation he said, “You know, Tiago, I don’t know much about football, but I understand a lot about people. I have no doubt that you are the right person.”

“Maybe he said that to convince me, I don’t know, but it felt so real that I said to myself, “Okay, let’s try it.”

Positive Bournemouth Relationship

Pinto and Foley have clearly had a positive relationship, with Bournemouth going from strength to strength under his guidance. At least it can be said that he is a fan of the American.

“It’s hard not to love his attitude and the way he interacts with us and the players,” he said.

“It’s something that comes from his background, his military experience and his hockey past, where he built a winning team. It protects him from the same problems as other owners who don’t understand the dynamics of the dressing room.

“He understands that, sometimes, players who don’t look technically brilliant can be vital to the balance of the team.”

Mohammed Siraj Suffers Scary Fall on Field During Match vs GT

Mohammed Siraj Suffers Scary Fall on Field During RCB vs GT: Latest Injury Update and Match Highlights

In the high-intensity environment of the Indian Premier League (IPL), every ball matters, and every player pushes their physical limits. During the recent clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT), fans held their breath as India’s premier pacer, Mohammed Siraj, suffered a frightening fall while attempting a sliding stop on the field.

As the race for the playoffs nears its peak, any injury to a key national asset like Siraj sends shockwaves through both the RCB camp and the Indian cricket fraternity, especially with the T20 World Cup on the horizon. Here is a detailed look at what happened on the field and the current status of the match.

The Incident: How Mohammed Siraj Got Injured

The incident occurred during the middle overs of the Gujarat Titans’ innings. Known for his tireless energy, Siraj was sprinting from the deep to prevent a boundary. As he attempted a signature sliding effort near the ropes, his spikes appeared to get caught in the turf, causing his knee to buckle awkwardly before he tumbled over.

Siraj remained on the ground for several minutes, clutching his leg in visible pain. The RCB medical team rushed to the spot immediately. The sight of the “Miyan Magic” bowler grimacing was enough to silence the home crowd. Fortunately, after receiving some primary treatment and stretching on the field, Siraj was able to limp back to his feet, though he looked visibly uncomfortable for the remainder of the over.

Impact on RCB vs GT Cricket Score

Before the injury scare, Siraj had been instrumental in keeping the GT batters under pressure. The RCB vs GT cricket score reflected a tactical battle. Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, struggled to find momentum early on against a disciplined RCB bowling attack.

Despite the fall, RCB’s bowling unit, spearheaded by the likes of Yash Dayal and Glenn Maxwell’s handy off-spin, managed to keep the run rate in check. However, the temporary absence of Siraj’s intensity in the death overs allowed GT to scrounge for some crucial late runs, setting up a competitive total on the board.

Why This is a Concern for Team India

Indian cricket fans are particularly worried because Mohammed Siraj is a vital cog in India’s fast-bowling arsenal. With the transition to international duties following the IPL, the BCCI medical team usually keeps a close watch on the workload and physical fitness of centrally contracted players. A knee or ankle injury at this stage could be devastating for India’s plans.

Conclusion

While Mohammed Siraj showed immense grit by staying on the field, the extent of the damage will only be known after the mandatory scans post-match. For RCB, Siraj is irreplaceable; for India, he is a gemstone. Fans across the country are praying that the fall was merely a momentary scare and not a long-term setback. As the IPL season progresses, player safety remains a top priority amidst the grueling schedule.

He stayed on the ground for a few minutes and looked in pain, but he eventually resumed his duties after being checked by the physiotherapist, though his movement seemed slightly restricted.
