The Dallas Mavericks are unable to catch any breaks this season as their troubles continue. On Monday, Daniel Gafford was forced to miss their game against the Golden State Warriors with a shoulder injury.

Gafford was playing great before being sent off late in the fourth quarter at American Airlines Center. The Mavericks announced that he would not return for the remainder of the game.

He finished with 20 points on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting. He also had seven rebounds, five assists, one steal and one block.

The Mavericks ultimately lost to the Warriors 137–131 in overtime.

Gafford has already missed more than 20 games this season due to various injuries. Entering the game against Golden State, he was averaging 9.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.2 blocks.

Dallas is already in fifth place, with Derek Lively II out for the season with a foot injury. The team acquired Marvin Bagley III at the trade deadline, but he is not a natural center. If Gafford sits out for an extended period of time, Dwight Powell could get extended minutes.

Cooper Flagg had a game-high 32 points on 12-of-19 shooting in the losing effort. He had four rebounds, nine assists and two steals, although he also had seven turnovers.

Bagley and PJ Washington combined for 18 points, three rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The Mavericks dropped their fourth consecutive assignment and lost 23–49. Meanwhile, the Warriors snapped their three-game losing streak and improved to 34–38.

Things won’t get easier for Dallas as they face the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday.

The Dallas Mavericks had a big win against the Cleveland Cavaliers in their first game in a row, and it’s almost like they controlled the game from start to finish. They will now face off against the New Orleans Pelicans, who have found new life following the return of Dejounte Murray, but like the Mavericks, are still near the bottom of the Western Conference.

Before the game, there were reports of some Mavericks players being injured. Klay Thompson is listed as questionable due to rest, and Daniel Gafford is doubtful with an illness.

Thompson missed two games last week due to rest, and it’s clear they want to give him as much time as possible to feel right to come back. In the same breath, the Mavericks will be playing tanking games, giving youngsters a chance to take some of those minutes.

As for Gafford, he has missed the last two games for the Mavericks and looks like he is on the verge of missing his third game in a row. With Gafford out, PJ Washington has taken over the center role, and he has done a good job in the role. Against the Cavs, he finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds and five steals.

It doesn’t seem like the Mavericks are trying to make this season completely pointless, and the goal seems to be to build good habits. They’re doing so while also being able to watch the development of young players like Cooper Flagg.

The Mavericks were able to hold down the No. 1 spot last season, and depending on where they finish at the end of the season, they have a good chance to do so again.

The matchup against the Pelicans will mean a lot to both teams, as they are right next to each other in the West standings.

And, just trying to play through it… It’s going to help me in the long run, I would say, because now it’s like the first time I’ve dealt with an injury that’s kind of lasted all season long.”

“So I’m learning a lot of things where, you know, taking more care of my body, trying to continue to find ways to be ready for the next game coming up,” Gafford said.

Despite Cooper Flagg’s stellar rookie campaign, the Mavericks are 21-38. They are the 12th seed in the Western Conference, two spots out of a play-in berth. Recently, the Mavericks made significant moves, trading D’Angelo Russell and Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards, which could be signaled as a reset for the organization around their new star.

The 27-year-old Gafford points toward that future. He currently has averages of 8.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game on a 63.2% field goal percentage. He could remain with Dallas as a consistent option at the center position, or his tradeable contract could be moved to add more depth to the team around Flagg. But Gafford’s availability certainly increases the Mavericks’ winning effectiveness.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have a way of making Target Center feel like a highlight factory, and Friday night was no exception. While the Timberwolves were recently sitting comfortably in the Western Conference playoff race, Nazi Reed decided to provide a moment that will be played on loop for the rest of the season.

With less than two minutes left in the first quarter and Minnesota already having a 10-point cushion, the sixth man of the year took matters into his own hands.

Reed caught a pass at half-court and took off on a one-man fastbreak. Most big men will look for the trailing guard or decide to drop to safety, but Reed is not most big men. He took a smooth “around the world” step to get past a retreating defender, picked up his pace and took off.
