Darius Garland’s special moment with family after win over Grizzlies

The Intuit Dome felt a bit like home for Darius Garland on Saturday night. The Los Angeles Clippers’ mid-season acquisition put on a show in a 123-120 win over the Memphis Grizzlies, but the highlight for Garland happened after the final buzzer.

For the first time since his trade to Los Angeles, Garland’s family was in the building to watch him suit up in the Clippers’ jerseys. Following the handshake line, the star guard bypassed the locker room to head straight to the sideline. Garland shared an emotional moment with his parents and siblings, posing for photos on the court and soaking in the atmosphere of a successful home debut in front of his inner circle.

On the court, Garland looked like he’d been playing in Tyronn Lue’s system for years. He finished the night with 21 points and six assists, stifling the Memphis defense with his trademark floaters and accurate passing. Garland shot an impressive 8 of 20 from the field and knocked down three triples, keeping the Clippers’ offense going even as the Grizzlies tried to take a lead late in the game.

Isaiah Jackson was the beneficiary of several Garland lobs, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Grizzlies struggled to find a rhythm without Ja Morant, although Ty Jerome led Memphis with 23 points in the losing effort. Taylor Hendricks added 18 points, but the Grizzlies had no answer to the Clippers’ balanced attack, with six players scoring in double figures.

With the win, the Clippers continued to climb the Western Conference standings. More importantly, Garland has found his comfort zone in Southern California.

Darius Garland’s injury update hints at a March return

The Los Angeles Clippers are anxiously awaiting the debut of point guard Darius Garland, who the team acquired from the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for James Harden. It was a shocking trade deadline move for the Clippers, who were playing some of the best basketball in the NBA before the trade.

Garland is currently out of the lineup due to injury, and recently, The Athletic’s Law Murray gave the latest update on his potential return status.

“I’ve been told that LA Clippers point guard Darius Garland is practicing on a limited basis to manage his surgically repaired left toe. Garland will not play tomorrow vs. the Nuggets or Friday in Los Angeles. Status for Sunday vs. Magic to be determined,” Murray, formerly of the X, told Twitter.

Murray then clarified that Garland “is week-to-week. Expected to play this season, but will likely debut in March. The Clippers want Garland to be fully recovered from the toe injury when he returns to play.”

Injuries have been a major problem for Garland over the last few seasons with the Cavaliers, which many have attributed to the team not having fully hit its stride yet.

However, when he is on the floor, the 26-year-old is one of the better scoring point guards in the NBA, capable of creating his own offense and facilitating for others, having made two All-Star teams so far in his career.

The combination of Garland with the treasure trove of assets the Clippers got back from the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Ivica Zubac will give Los Angeles a solid set of building blocks moving forward, no matter what the future holds for Kawhi Leonard, who is currently playing some of the best basketball of his career.

The Clippers next play against the Denver Nuggets on Thursday evening.
