3 goalie coaches the Devils could pursue

It appears Sunny Mehta has gone through his process of identifying the New Jersey Devils’ weaknesses, and he has broken up with the dead weight.

Thus, Devils GM fired Dave Rogalski on Tuesday and is rehiring Sergei Brylin within the organization. He will not be in a coaching capacity.

Sheldon Keefe will remain as head coach of the Devils, and Keefe hired Brad Shaw and Jeremy Colliton to remain as his assistants.

However, the Devils need to replace Braylin behind the bench and hire Rogalski – widely known as the Martin Brodeur hire – as a goaltending coach.

The search to replace both is currently ongoing. Starting at the goaltending coach position, who could Mehta and Keefe pursue for the position?

Leo Luongo-Florida Panthers/Charlotte Checkers

Well, now that Mehta is in charge and Braden Birch as his right-hand man, why not go back to the Florida well that has worked so far?

Leo Luongo, younger brother of Hall-of-Fame goaltender Roberto Luongo, has played two NHL roles with the Florida Panthers. He was previously their goaltending development coach in 2020-21 – where he helped Sergei Bobrovsky have a strong year and helped Chris Dreigger turn in a stellar performance. He then graduated to Director of Player Development, and is now Director of Goaltending for Florida’s AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.

Luongo is a member of a first-of-its-kind goaltending excellence department in Florida that has helped develop netminders such as Dreigger, Joey Daccord and Spencer Knight.

Part of Luongo’s responsibility as Director of Goaltending is to streamline the structure between Florida and Charlotte so that NHL and AHL goaltenders can receive similar development and mentorship.

In fact, he has been a key part of Florida’s organization that has helped Luongo and Florida win two Stanley Cups.

This would certainly bode well for NHL goaltenders and developing netminders like Mikhail Yegorov and Jakub Malek.

Luongo could also help develop his own goaltending excellence department in New Jersey and ultimately end the revolving door of weak goaltenders in the Devils organization.

Hannu Toivonen-Toronto Marlies

If we’re looking for a goaltending coach to match Keefe, look no further than Hannu Toivonen, who overlapped with Keefe for three seasons in the Toronto organization.

Former pro goaltender turned goalie coach Toivonen has been labeled the Toronto Marlies goaltending guru after helping bring Ilya Samsonov back to NHL standard and successfully develop Dennis Hildeby early in his career.

With Samsonov in particular, Toivunen’s task was to get him back on track as a goaltender after taking a leave of absence for a “physical and mental reset”.

Toivonen’s role in Samsonov’s resurgence when he returned on January 14 after a 10-day reset was instrumental in his return to the Maple Leafs on the tail end of the 2023–2024 season. Samsonov posted a well below average .862 SV$ and 3.94 GAA in his first 15 games. He was assigned to the AHL Marlies to work on himself, and Samsonov received dedicated one-on-one mentoring from Toivonen.

Through focused sessions on the ice and support from the team’s development and performance staff, Toivonen helped Samsonov rebuild his confidence, refine his technique, and restore his mental intensity. The results were shocking. Upon his return, Samsonov delivered a much-improved .904 SV% and 2.70 GAA over his final 25 games, demonstrating the profound impact of Toivonen’s guidance in helping the Russian netminder regain his form and stabilize the Maple Leafs’ crease.

Now, it appears Toivonen is grooming another young goaltender in Toronto, named Artur Akhtyamov, who finished his first season as the starting goaltender for the Marlies with a 2.88 GAA and .904 SV% in 37 games. Akhtiyamov carried his strong regular season performance into the postseason where he has posted a 2.25 GAA and .916 SV% in eight games so far.

A source told New Jersey Hockey Now that Toivonen is “deserving of a promotion” and would be an excellent choice to take over the Devils’ vacant position.

Curtis Sanford-Toronto Maple Leafs

It seems more like the Devils could take Toivonen from Toronto rather than displace Curtis Sanford, who is already the goaltending coach in Toronto.

However, the Maple Leafs are going through changes of their own, and the arrival of a new head coach does not guarantee Sanford will remain in his position.

Sanford is a former NHL goaltender turned coach who has spent his coaching career in the Maple Leafs, Utica Comets and Abbotsford Canucks organizations.

In Toronto, Craig Berube inherited Sanford, who was hired by Keefe as goaltending coach in 2022–23.

Their most recent results don’t jump off the page in terms of their goaltenders’ performance. However, this is a result of the team’s poor performance overall.

In recent seasons, Sanford has put up some solid numbers from goaltenders such as Martin Jones, Joseph Woll, and Anthony Stolarz.

Depending on his luck in Toronto, Sanford’s familiarity with Keefe could attract him to New Jersey as the 46-year-old goalie coach looks to continue his career in the NHL.

Bob Stauffer floats goalie prospect trade

Trade rumors are like sunshine around this time of year; The further you go into the summer, the more there is.

The Edmonton Oilers already have a lot of decisions to make this summer. While some believe they need to find a way to send out defender Darnell Nurse, there are bigger problems that must be addressed.

One of those problems was solved by an Oilers Now radio host (employed by the team, mind you). Bob Stauffer appeared on the 100% Hockey Podcast and talked to the hosts about some of the issues burdening the team.

Bookmark the Edmonton Oilers on SportsNut so you don’t miss the latest news, rumors, opinions and more.

Oilers insider addresses the Jerry-Ingram tandem

tristan jerry

One topic of discussion was the combination of Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram. Jarry is under contract for a few more years, while Ingram is a free agent.

“They’ve got to find a way to move forward here with Tristan Jarry,” Stouffer told hosts Darren Millard and John Shannon. “Under the assumption that he’s in Edmonton next year, he’s got to work with them, just like he had to work with (forward Trent) Fredericks, right? Like he’s got to work with those guys and get it out of them.”

“I think Jerry’s a better puck handler. He’s got a great glove hand.”

Additionally, Stauffer is unsure whether the Oilers are interested in bringing Ingram back.

Stauffer argued, “I think they have to figure that kind of thing out.” “I think Ingram gave them as much as he could, but he didn’t steal any games in the playoffs. We’ll have to see what happens with Ingram. But I think he might have to consider a move out of the organization if this trend continues.”

What do the Oilers need from an Eastern Conference team?

Stauffer suggests a trade for a goaltender prospect. That is, one who is closer to NHL-ready than the current crop of hopefuls.

Stauffer urges, “Maybe they need to target a young goaltender in an organization that has deep goaltending potential.” “They’ve got a lot of goalscoring potential themselves. But they’re years away, you know, three to four years away. There’s a club in the East that has four very good goalscorers in their system right now. So we’ll see what happens here moving forward.”

“I’m not saying anything about the team. I respect that organization for having a goaltender.”

My thoughts on goalie prospect trading

  • The Detroit Red Wings are likely the team Stauffer is referring to.
  • On Puckpedia, Detroit’s potential goaltenders to sign are Michal Postava, Trey Augustin, Carter Zyllander and Sebastian Cossa.
  • The Red Wings have $32,791,667 in salary cap space before addressing their free agent situation.
  • Postava and Augustin are contracted for at least one more season. Cossa and Zylander will become restricted free agents on July 1, 2026.
  • Cossa, 23, has big size, but has fallen out of favor with the Red Wings organization. Given that his contract is expiring, Detroit may be tempted to trade him before July 1.
  • Unfortunately for the Oilers, they will have to address their goaltending from multiple angles.
  • If they play better defense, it will make things a lot easier on their netminders.
  • The Oilers goaltenders need to improve the weaknesses in their game over the summer to become better overall players.
  • If the organization trusts Jerry’s limits, they probably won’t betray him.

One way or another, it’s going to be an interesting offseason for the Oilers. Addressing their goal-related issues should be a top priority.

We’re waiting to see if they really feel the same way.

Devils shut down goalie Markstrom for the rest of the season

The New Jersey Devils announced Friday that they are sidelining goaltender Jacob Markstrom for the remainder of the season due to a serious injury.

Markstrom last played Tuesday in the Devils’ 5-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, stopping just 15 of 19 shots. That loss eliminated New Jersey from contention for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Markstrom is 23-19-1 with an .883 save% and 3.07 goals-against average and one shutout in 44 games for the Devils this season. He became the second Devils player to be ruled out, as defenseman Luke Hughes was also placed on injured reserve on Thursday.

The Devils have three games remaining. They will play against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday, then play their final home game of the season on Sunday against the Ottawa Senators, before closing out the year on Tuesday against the Boston Bruins.

The Devils are closing in on Jacob Markstrom

David Kirouac-Imagen Images

Markstrom and Jake Allen have teamed up for the No. 1/1A goalie duo this year. For the most part, Allen has been the better option, as he is 16-17-2 despite better numbers with a .903 save% and 2.73 GAA.

But Markstrom’s struggles, especially recently, may be injury related. Coach Sheldon Keefe said Markstrom was being shut down with multiple nagging injuries.

Those injuries didn’t stop Markstrom from fighting Igor Shesterkin against the New York Rangers last week.

Markstrom, who signed a two-year contract extension on Halloween, was the primary starter for the Devils and Sweden at both the Milan/Cortina Olympics. Sweden had the better defense in front of him, as he went 2-0-1 with a .933 save%.

But in New Jersey, Markstrom was one of the NHL’s worst statistical goaltenders this season. He had a minus-13.71 goals-against average in all situations and a .892 save percentage at 5-on-5 this season.

Nevertheless, Markstrom was shut out with his only shutout of the season in just two starts. He stopped 18 of 18 shots in a 3-0 win against the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday. But it was their only appearance to allow fewer than four goals in their final four appearances in 2025–26.

Nico Dodge will start Sunday against the Senators

NHL: Minnesota Wild and New Jersey Devils
John Jones-Imagen Images

Allen is expected to start Saturday night in Detroit, but the Devils’ goaltender’s move was to call up Nico Dawes from Utica of the American Hockey League.

Dodge made his only start this season on October 22 against the Minnesota Wild. He made 30 saves on 31 shots in New Jersey’s 4–1 win at the Prudential Center.

Dodge has been the primary starter for the Comets this season and went 15-16-8 with an .891 save% and 2.84 GAA in 42 games. Dodge’s numbers are far better in the NHL, as he is 23-23-1 with a save% of .899 in 53 games with the Devils.

Look for the Dodgers to open Sunday at home against Ottawa on fan-appreciation night at the Rock.

Goalie pulls Hurricanes to win over Blue Jackets

A broken hockey stick caused by pure frustration in the visitors’ tunnel was an obvious indicator of the Carolina Hurricanes’ game on Tuesday night, but strong goaltending and a heavy helping of luck saved what was almost a game that hurt more than just flesh.

In the first half of the game, the Hurricanes were dominant against their Metropolitan Division rivals – the Columbus Blue Jackets. In the first period, the Hurricanes got two power play opportunities, and Shayne Gostisbehere and Logan Stankoven both used them, putting Carolina ahead two-to-zilch at the first intermission.

The game was good, the offense was flowing and the defense made life more difficult for the Blue Jackets. However, as the second frame progressed, what was working had holes in it. Puck management fell apart, their transition game suffered and they ultimately gave up an inch to the Blue Jackets.

Kirill Marchenko turned that inch into a mile.

Taking advantage of the Hurricanes’ sudden lack of focus, Marchenko pulled his team back into the fight with his first goal in eight games. The puck slipped under Brandon Bussey’s padding, and officials had to review it to make sure it even crossed the goal line before being put on the boards.

When the Hurricanes started to get the game going, it was Busey who stopped the bleeding by making repeated saves throughout the frame. At one point, he was alone against Sean Monahan as all the other players on the ice converged on the corner boards of the defensive zone – leaving Columbus alone in the slot with the puck. Thankfully for Carolina, their netminder was on top and finished off the chance.

‘Make or Break’ Third Period

The Hurricanes gave themselves another wound in the third period. Stankoven entered the zone with pressure from the Blue Jackets and dangerously dropped the puck to Jackson Blake, who ultimately missed. Adam Fantilli caught it, and after some tic-tac-toeing back into the Hurricanes zone, he hit a shot that tied the game.

Columbus had the momentum, and Carolina had the offense.

Still, Nikolaj Ehlers did the best job he could and got the Hurricanes the clutch goal they needed.

After a failed challenge for goal interference by the Blue Jackets, the Hurricanes initiated another power play, with Andrei Svechnikov taking the lead – after eating a puck earlier in the game, bruised mug and all.

…Honestly, this was not a night for faces. Miles Wood, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Andrei Svechnikov all took tackles in their individual careers, while three high-sticking penalties were assessed throughout the game.

Interestingly, Ehlers had an assist on Svechnikov’s goal, which was his 3rd point of the night and 40th assist of the season (a new career high), and his 64th point (tied his career high).

Eventually, the clock ran out and Columbus’ net was empty as the Blue Jackets took the power play in the final minute. But it was all for naught, as Jordan Martinook scored an empty-netter. It was the tenth short-handed goal for the Hurricanes this season, moving them into second place in the league-wide tally.

The final score came out to be 5-2 in favor of the Hurricanes, but if not for Bussey’s focus and incredible success on special teams, things could have ended very differently.

Canadiens Trade Talk: Evaluating potential goalie targets

It is no secret that the Montreal Canadiens have received less-than-stellar netminding this season, a situation that has led some to suggest the team should acquire a goaltender before the NHL trade deadline.

This is a logical approach, as the Habs could improve the team by trading for a goaltender who can perform better than Samuel Montembeault.

However, the two names being mentioned as potential upgrades for the Canadiens, Jordan Binnington (32) and Sergei Bobrovsky (37), are far from their statistical prime.

In fact, the 29-year-old Montembeault is much younger than the troubled netminders. This doesn’t mean the Canadiens can’t acquire a goaltender over the age of 29, but if they do, they’ll have to make sure the player in question can potentially deliver better results than Montembeault.

Montreal Canadiens goaltending trade targets

Before we look at the numbers, it should be noted that Binnington and Bobrowski have won Stanley Cups in the past, and there is something to be said for providing valuable experience to the youngest team in the league.

However, the goaltender in question is no longer in Stanley Cup shape, as evidenced by his numbers, which are downright terrible.

To get a better idea, we’ll take a look at four different metrics at 5v5: save percentage (SV%), goals saved above average per 60 (GSAA/60), high-danger save percentage (HDSV%), and high-danger goals saved above average per 60 (HDGSAA/60).

We filtered results for players with at least 1000 minutes played at 5v5 this season, giving us a total of 49 goaltenders.

As you can see in the table above, Montbault is near the bottom of the league in all four metrics.

And yet, he’s still managed to produce better numbers than both Binnington and Bobrowski. They are ranked last or close to last in most categories, a good reminder that the grass is not always greener.

You could argue that this isn’t a fair comparison, as the Montreal Canadiens are a better team than the Florida Panthers and St. Louis Blues, but that would be to ignore the fact that the Canadiens are below both teams in high-danger shot share (46.3%).

In other words, the Canadiens squandered high-danger chances, making life much harder on their netminders. There are a dozen or more awkward rushes every night, not to mention a few instances of confused defensive coverages.

Simply put, the idea of acquiring Jordan Binnington or Sergei Bobrovsky makes little to no sense for the Montreal Canadiens, as they would be unlikely to surpass Montembeault, not to mention Jacob Dobbs.

And then there’s the matter of freeing up cap space for netminders with worse numbers than the second-best Habs goalie.

All things considered, making this type of deal would be a mistake in the face of the smart, thorough work Kent Hughes and Co. have done since taking the reins in Montreal.

All Montreal Canadiens stats are 5v5, via Natural Stat Trick, unless otherwise noted.

NHL Insider reveals Edmonton Oilers’ bold goalie trade plan for 2026

The Edmonton Oilers are one of the bigger teams to keep an eye on at the NHL trade deadline. As of Tuesday, March 3, Edmonton holds the final wild card spot. However, the lack of production from its goalkeepers is a major problem. So, what’s the latest on the Oilers’ trade plans for the goalie over the next few days?

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman believes Edmonton has accomplished its goal, as explained on the 32 Thoughts Podcast. One of the Oilers’ main goaltenders, Connor Ingram, has a .894 save percentage and recently allowed five goals against the San Jose Sharks. Meanwhile, Tristan Jarry has a .863 save percentage since arriving in Edmonton.

Jerry spent his entire career with the Pittsburgh Penguins before being traded for goaltender Stuart Skinner. Over the past four games, the Edmonton goalkeeper has had 18 goals and not conceded two of them. Needless to say, this has been a major weakness for the Oilers during the 2025-26 NHL season.

There are several goaltenders available, such as the Florida Panthers’ Sergei Bobrovsky, but Edmonton seems content with filling other needs such as defence. On Monday, the Oilers acquired defenseman Connor Murphy from the Chicago Blackhawks for a 2028 second-round pick. Better defense can help score better goals.

While acquiring a better goaltender should be Edmonton’s top priority, that doesn’t seem to be the case heading into Friday’s trade deadline. The Oilers are likely working with Ingram and Jarry, while Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are expected to provide more help moving forward.

Best Field Hockey & Ice Hockey Sticks and Goalie Gloves in India 🏒🧤

Top Field Hockey & Ice Hockey Sticks and Goalie Gloves in India: A Complete Guide

Hockey is more than just a sport in India; it is a legacy. Whether you are playing under the sun on a synthetic turf or sliding across an ice rink in Ladakh, having the right equipment is crucial for performance and safety. Selecting the best field hockey sticks or ice hockey gear requires understanding materials, weight, and grip.

In this guide, we explore the top-rated hockey sticks and goalie gloves available in the Indian market to help you elevate your game.

Choosing the Best Field Hockey Sticks in India

Field hockey remains the heart of Indian sports. For players looking to dominate the turf, the choice usually boils down to wood vs. composite sticks.

  • Composite Sticks: Modern professionals prefer composite sticks made of carbon, fiberglass, and aramid. Brands like Adidas, Rakshak, and Spartan offer high-carbon sticks that provide maximum power for hits and drag flicks.
  • Wooden Sticks: Ideal for beginners and students, wooden sticks offer a better “feel” for the ball, helping newcomers develop their dribbling skills.

When buying, look for the “bow” (the curvature). A Low Bow is perfect for 3D skills and flicking, while a Mid Bow is better for all-round play and hitting.

Ice Hockey Sticks: Finding Your Flex

While ice hockey is a niche sport in India, its popularity is surging in northern regions. Unlike field sticks, ice hockey sticks are longer and categorized by “flex.”

For Indian players, brands like Bauer and CCM are the gold standard. A stick with a lower flex (around 65-75) is better for quick snapshots, whereas a higher flex (85+) suits defensive players looking for powerful slapshots.

The Shield: Best Goalie Gloves for Field & Ice Hockey

The goalkeeper is the backbone of any hockey team. Whether you’re facing a hard leather ball or a frozen puck, your hands need elite protection.

Field Hockey Goalie Legguards and Hand Protectors

In field hockey, the “gloves” are actually high-density foam protectors. The left-hand protector is flat to deflect shots, while the right-hand protector is shaped to hold the stick comfortably. Brands like TK and OBO are widely available in India and offer superior rebound control.

Ice Hockey Goalie Catchers and Blockers

Ice hockey goalies use a “Catcher” (like a baseball glove) and a “Blocker.” In the Indian climate, ensure you choose gloves with moisture-wicking liners to prevent sweat buildup and maintain a firm grip on the stick.

Key Factors to Consider Before Buying

  1. Material: Carbon percentage determines power. Higher carbon means more power but requires better technique.
  2. Size: A field hockey stick should usually reach your hip bone.
  3. Weight: Light sticks (520g-540g) are great for attackers; medium sticks (550g+) are better for defenders.

Conclusion

Investing in high-quality hockey equipment is an investment in your safety and skill development. For field hockey, domestic brands like Rakshak provide excellent value, while international giants like Adidas offer cutting-edge technology. For ice hockey, focusing on the right flex and durable goalie gloves will keep you competitive on the rink. Always prioritize comfort and grip to ensure you perform at your peak during the match.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Which brand is best for field hockey sticks in India?

Popular and reliable brands include Adidas, Rakshak, Spartan, and Vampire. Adidas is preferred for professional turf play, while Rakshak is widely used in domestic circuits.

2. What is the difference between a Mid Bow and a Low Bow stick?

A Mid Bow has a curve in the middle, making it great for passing and control. A Low Bow has the curve closer to the head, which helps in drag flicking and performing 3D skills like lifted dribbling.

3. Do I need different gloves for field hockey and ice hockey?

Yes, absolutely. Field hockey goalie gloves are made of high-density foam designed for ball deflection, while ice hockey gloves consist of a catcher and a blocker specifically designed to stop a puck.

4. How do I maintain my hockey stick?

Avoid using your composite stick on rough concrete surfaces as it wears down the head. Always wipe your stick dry after playing in the rain or on a wet turf to maintain the grip longevity.

Tristan Jarry borrows Kris Letang’s stick after breaking his, but it doesn’t matter as he makes a great glove save to deny Jonathan Drouin

Unbelievable Goal by Hockey Goalie From Behind the Net #shorts #nhl #sports

Unbelievable Goal by Hockey Goalie From Behind the Net: A Viral NHL Sensation

In the world of professional ice hockey, certain moments transcend the boundaries of the rink and go viral globally. Recently, a clip titled “Unbelievable Goal by Hockey Goalie From Behind the Net #shorts” has been taking the internet by storm. While India is historically a field hockey powerhouse, the adrenaline-pumping world of the National Hockey League (NHL) is rapidly gaining a massive fanbase among Indian sports enthusiasts.

The “Goalie Goal”: A Rare Masterpiece

Scoring a goal in the NHL is hard enough for world-class forwards, but when a goalie does it, it’s nothing short of legendary. What makes this specific viral short so “unbelievable” is the positioning. Most goalie goals occur when the opposing team pulls their keeper for an extra attacker, leaving an empty net. However, launching a puck accurately from 200 feet away—specifically from behind one’s own net—requires immense strength, precision, and a bit of “ice cold” luck.

For Indian fans used to the tactical finesse of field hockey, the raw power required to lift a vulcanized rubber puck across the entire length of an ice rink is a sight to behold. This viral moment highlights the evolving athleticism of modern goaltenders who are no longer just shot-blockers but active playmakers.

Staying Updated with Hockey Scores

As the NHL season progresses, keeping track of hockey scores has become easier for fans in India. With the time zone difference, most games take place during the early morning hours in India. Whether you are following the high-flying Boston Bruins, the star-studded Connor McDavid-led Edmonton Oilers, or the defending champions, staying updated with live scores is essential for any sports bettor or hardcore fan.

  • Live Apps: Use the official NHL app or ESPN for real-time play-by-play updates.
  • Social Media: Follow hashtags like #NHL and #HockeyHighlights for instant clips of goals.
  • Indian Broadcasts: Keep an eye on streaming platforms like Disney+ Hotstar or FanCode, which occasionally feature major ice hockey events.

Why This Matters to Indian Sports Fans

India’s love for hockey is deep-rooted. While the surface (ice vs. grass/turf) differs, the spirit of the game remains the same: speed, teamwork, and clinical finishing. Seeing a goalie score from behind the net resonates with the Indian “sporting spirit” that appreciates underdog stories and extraordinary feats of skill. As digital connectivity grows, these 60-second #shorts are bridging the gap between North American leagues and the Indian subcontinent.

Conclusion

The viral sensation of a goalie scoring from behind the net is a testament to why the NHL is one of the most exciting leagues in the world. It’s a rare blend of luck and elite skill that happens once in a blue moon. For Indian fans, this is the perfect time to dive deeper into the sport. Beyond the viral shorts, following the hockey scores and understanding the league standings can lead to a lifelong passion for the fastest game on Earth.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How rare is a goalie goal in the NHL?
Extremely rare. In the history of the NHL, fewer than 20 goals have been officially credited to goaltenders. It is considered one of the most difficult feats in professional sports.

2. Can a goalie score from behind their own net?
Yes, as seen in recent viral videos. If a goalie plays the puck behind their own goal line and clears it high enough to travel the length of the rink into the opposing empty net, the goal counts.

3. Where can I check NHL hockey scores in India?
Indian fans can check scores on Google Sports, the NHL official website, or apps like Flashscore and SofaScore for real-time updates.

4. Is Ice Hockey different from the Hockey played in India?
Yes. In India, “Hockey” usually refers to Field Hockey played on turf. Ice Hockey is played on an ice rink with skates and a puck instead of a ball, but both share similar rules regarding scoring and fouls.

Junior Ice Hockey Goalie Gear Size Guide: India Buying Tips

Junior Ice Hockey Goalie Gear Size Guide: India Buying Tips

Ice hockey is a rapidly growing sport in India, particularly in regions like Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. As more young athletes step into the crease, selecting the right equipment becomes vital. Being an ice hockey goalie is one of the most demanding roles in sports, and for a junior player, proper fit is the difference between a great save and a potential injury.

This guide provides essential tips for Indian parents and players on how to size junior goalie gear correctly, considering the unique challenges of availability and climate in the Indian market.

1. Measuring Leg Pads (The Goalie’s Shield)

Leg pads are the most iconic part of goalie gear. For junior players, the most common mistake is buying pads that are too large, hoping the child will “grow into them.” This hampers mobility and technique.

  • How to Measure: Measure the distance from the floor to the center of the kneecap (while slightly bent) and from the kneecap to the mid-thigh.
  • The “At-Home” Test: When the player puts the pads on, their knee must land directly in the center of the knee cradle. If the knee is too low, the pads are too big.

2. Catch Gloves and Blockers

A junior goalie needs to feel the puck. In India, where gear is often imported, sizes usually follow “Junior” or “Youth” categories.

  • The Blocker: There should be no more than half an inch of space between the fingertips and the end of the glove. A blocker that is too big will rotate on the hand during a save.
  • The Catch Glove: The player should be able to close the glove comfortably. Ensure the wrist strap can be tightened enough to secure the glove to a smaller wrist.

3. The Goalie Mask (Helmet)

Safety is paramount. A goalie mask must fit snugly around the entire head with no gaps.
Pro Tip for India: Since you might be playing on outdoor rinks in high altitudes (like Leh), ensure the internal foam doesn’t become too brittle in extreme cold. Always check for the HECC or CSA certification stickers on the back.

4. Buying Tips for the Indian Market

Finding ice hockey gear in India can be tricky. Here are a few strategic tips:

  • Check Local Foundations: Organizations like the Ice Hockey Association of India (IHAI) often have equipment registries or second-hand gear programs.
  • Importing Considerations: If ordering from abroad, factor in “Customs Duty.” Junior gear is often lighter, which can help save on international shipping costs.
  • The Layering Factor: Since many Indian rinks are outdoors, ensure the chest protector and pants have enough room to accommodate a thin thermal base layer without restricting movement.

Conclusion

Choosing junior ice hockey goalie gear requires a balance between protection, mobility, and growth room. In the Indian context, where the sport is evolving, investing in the right size ensures that young “wall-builders” stay safe and develop the correct habits on the ice. Remember, a well-fitted goalie is a confident goalie. Always prioritize the fit of the knee cradle and the helmet above any aesthetic preference.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What age group is “Junior” gear for?

Generally, Junior gear is designed for players aged 8 to 12 years. However, sizing should always be based on physical measurements (height and weight) rather than age alone.

2. Can my child use player skates for goaltending?

While beginners in India often start with player skates, it is highly recommended to switch to goalie skates as soon as possible. Goalie skates have a flatter blade for stability and extra reinforcement to protect feet from puck impacts.

3. Where can I buy ice hockey goalie gear in India?

Specialized shops are rare, but you can find gear through the Ladakh Winter Sports Club, certain dealers in Delhi, or by ordering from international retailers that ship to India. Always check for local community gear swaps!

4. How do I know if the chest protector fits?

The chest protector should end at the waistline. If it is too long, it will push the helmet up when the goalie crouches. The elbow pads must stay in place when the arms are moved.

(Conclusion)

The Day Ron Hextall Made History: First Ever NHL Goalie Goal Explained

The Day Ron Hextall Made History: The First Ever NHL Goalie Goal Explained

For many sports fans in India, “hockey” immediately brings to mind the skillful stickwork on grass fields. However, Ice Hockey—the lightning-fast winter cousin—has a history filled with moments of pure audacity. One of the most legendary feats occurred on December 8, 1987, when Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ron Hextall did the unthinkable: he became the first goalie in NHL history to score a goal by intentionally shooting the puck into the opponent’s net.

Who was Ron Hextall?

In the late 1980s, Ron Hextall wasn’t just known for stopping pucks; he was known for his fiery temperament and his revolutionary puck-handling skills. While most goalies stayed glued to their crease, Hextall played like a third defender, often clearing the puck out of his zone with the precision of a midfielder.

The Historic Moment Explained

The date was December 8, 1987, and the Philadelphia Flyers were leading the Boston Bruins 4-2. In a desperate attempt to tie the game, the Bruins pulled their goalkeeper to add an extra attacker. This left their net completely empty.

With roughly 1 minute and 12 seconds left on the clock, the puck was dumped into the Flyers’ zone. Instead of covering it or passing it to a teammate, Hextall stepped out, settled the puck, and took a massive swing. The puck soared over the heads of the defenders, glided across the ice, and slid perfectly into the center of the Boston net. The Spectrum stadium erupted; history had been made.

Why This Changed the Game

Before Hextall, a goalie’s job was strictly defensive. While Billy Smith (New York Islanders) was technically the first goalie credited with a goal in 1979, he only received credit because he was the last defensive player to touch the puck before an opponent’s accidental own-goal. Hextall was the first to shoot and score direct.

He proved it wasn’t a fluke by doing it again in 1989, becoming the first goalie to score in a playoff game. Today, modern goalies like Pekka Rinne and Linus Ullmark owe their offensive confidence to the trail blazed by Hextall.

Tracking Hockey Scores in India

If you are an Indian fan following the NHL or international ice hockey championships, keeping up with hockey scores can be tricky due to the time zone difference. Most NHL games happen during the early morning hours (IST).

  • Google Sports: Simply search “NHL scores” for real-time updates.
  • Official NHL App: Provides highlights, which are perfect for watching goalie goals and power plays.
  • ESPN/Star Sports: Occasionally broadcast major events like the Stanley Cup Finals or Winter Olympics.

Conclusion

Ron Hextall’s goal remains one of the most iconic highlights in the history of the NHL. It showcased a blend of skill and bravery that redefined what a goaltender could achieve. As Indian fans continue to expand their horizons beyond field hockey and cricket, appreciating legends like Hextall is the perfect way to start a journey into the world of ice hockey.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Is Ron Hextall the only goalie to score a goal?

No, since Hextall’s historic feat, several other goalies have scored, including Martin Brodeur (who has three career goals) and most recently, Linus Ullmark in 2023.

2. How can I watch NHL highlights in India?

The official NHL YouTube channel is the best place for Indian fans to watch game recaps, “Goals of the Week,” and historic clips like Hextall’s goal for free.

3. What is a ‘Pulled Goalie’ in hockey?

In hockey, if a team is losing by one or two goals near the end of the game, they “pull” their goalie off the ice to put an extra offensive player on. This leaves the net empty, which is how Hextall was able to score.

4. Does India have an Ice Hockey team?

Yes! India has a national Ice Hockey team that competes in the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia. The sport is particularly popular in Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh.

On December 8th, 1987 Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ron Hextall became the first ever NHL goaltender to score a goal.

Laurent Brossoit Goal: IceHogs Goalie Scores Rare Goal in AHL Hockey Highlights

Laurent Brossoit Goal: IceHogs Goalie Scores Rare Goal in AHL Hockey Highlights

In the fast-paced world of professional ice hockey, some moments transcend the standard box score. While Indian sports fans are traditionally accustomed to the high-scoring thrills of cricket or the tactical precision of field hockey, a rare phenomenon from the American Hockey League (AHL) is currently capturing global attention. Laurent Brossoit, the veteran goaltender for the Rockford IceHogs, recently achieved the ultimate “bucket list” item for any netminder: scoring a goal.

A Rare Feat in AHL Hockey Highlights

On a night that started as a standard matchup for the Rockford IceHogs (the primary affiliate of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks), Brossoit turned the game into a viral sensation. With the opposition trailing and pulling their goalie for an extra attacker, the puck landed perfectly for Brossoit. Displaying the poise of a seasoned striker, he fired the puck the full length of the ice, watching it slide perfectly into the empty net.

Goalie goals are incredibly rare in professional hockey. When looking at hockey scores across leagues like the AHL or NHL, you see hundreds of goals from forwards and defenders, but a goalie scoring is a “once-in-a-season” event. Brossoit’s goal wasn’t just a fluke; it was a testament to his puck-handling skills and vision.

Why the Laurent Brossoit Goal is Trending

For fans following AHL hockey highlights, this goal represents more than just a point on the scoreboard. It highlights the evolving role of the “modern goalie.” Today’s goaltenders are expected to be more than just shot-stoppers; they are expected to play the puck and start the transition game. Brossoit, who is currently on a conditioning stint in the AHL to regain form, proved he is still one of the most talented players in the crease.

Breaking Down the Stats and Hockey Scores

  • Player: Laurent Brossoit (Rockford IceHogs)
  • The Play: Empty-net goal from the defensive zone.
  • Impact: Sealed the victory for the IceHogs, making them a top highlight on sports networks globally.

While the AHL might not have a massive domestic league in India, the rise of digital streaming and social media has allowed Indian sports enthusiasts to follow high-stakes North American hockey. Seeing a goaltender score is the equivalent of a wicket-keeper hitting a last-ball six in a T20 match—it’s unexpected, thrilling, and technically demanding.

Conclusion

The Laurent Brossoit goal will undoubtedly go down as one of the top AHL hockey highlights of the year. It serves as a reminder of the unpredictability and excitement that ice hockey offers. As Brossoit prepares to return to the NHL, he leaves the IceHogs with a memory that fans in Rockford (and new fans in India) won’t soon forget. Whether you are a hardcore hockey fan or a casual observer of hockey scores, moments like these are why we watch the game.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Crazy Hockey Goalie Mic’d Up Moments #hockey #goalie #shorts

The Chaos Behind the Mask: Why Crazy Hockey Goalie Mic’d Up Moments are Going Viral

In the world of sports, there is a common saying: “You don’t have to be crazy to be a goalie, but it helps.” While Field Hockey is a national pride in India, the intense world of Ice Hockey is rapidly gaining a massive digital following among Indian youth. One particular trend taking YouTube and Instagram by storm is #hockey goalie mic’d up shorts.

But what exactly makes these “mic’d up” moments so addictive? It’s the rare glimpse into the high-pressure, eccentric, and often hilarious world of the person standing between the pipes.

What Does “Mic’d Up” Mean in Hockey?

When a goalie is “mic’d up,” a small, wireless microphone is hidden inside their jersey or chest protector. While fans usually only see a stoic figure in heavy padding, the audio reveals a non-stop commentary. From talking to themselves to trash-talking opponents or even singing Bollywood tunes during a lull in play—the audio is pure gold.

Why Indian Fans Love Crazy Goalie Shorts

The popularity of hockey in India—thanks to our legacy in the Olympics—means Indian viewers appreciate the skill involved. However, the “Crazy Goalie” persona adds an entertainment layer. Here is what makes these moments viral:

  • Self-Talk: Goalies often talk to themselves to stay focused. Hearing a professional athlete scream “Focus, Rahul, focus!” or “Don’t blink!” is highly relatable to anyone who has played competitive sports.
  • The “Wall” Mentality: There is a certain madness required to let people fire pucks or balls at you at 100 km/h. The reaction of a goalie after a “big save” is often a mix of adrenaline and pure gibberish.
  • On-Ice Chirping: Goalies have the best view of the game. Their witty remarks to strikers who miss the goal are a highlight of these #shorts.

The Psychology of a Hockey Goalkeeper

Whether it is PR Sreejesh on the turf or an NHL goalie on ice, the goalkeeper is the backbone of the team. Mic’d up segments show that behind the intimidating mask is a human being dealing with immense stress through humor. For Indian students and young athletes, these videos provide a lesson in mental resilience—showing that even in high-stakes moments, keeping a light heart can improve performance.

Conclusion

The Crazy Hockey Goalie Mic’d Up trend is more than just funny noises and screams. It is a celebration of the toughest position in sports. As digital content continues to bridge the gap between global sports like Ice Hockey and Indian fans, these shorts serve as a perfect entry point for those who love high-octane action and personality-driven content. So, the next time you see a #hockey #shorts video, turn up the volume—the best part of the game is what you hear, not just what you see.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Why are hockey goalies considered “crazy”?

Goalies are often called “crazy” because their job involves voluntarily stepping in front of high-speed projectiles. It requires a unique mindset and extreme courage compared to other positions.

2. Are the mic’d up moments real or scripted?

In professional leagues, these are 100% real. Players and goalies wear the mics during actual games or practice sessions to provide fans with authentic “behind-the-scenes” audio.

3. Is Ice Hockey popular in India?

Yes, Ice Hockey is growing rapidly in India, especially in regions like Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. The Indian National Ice Hockey team participates in international tournaments, and the sport has a dedicated fan base in the Himalayas.

4. Can I see mic’d up moments in Field Hockey?

While more common in Ice Hockey (NHL), major Field Hockey tournaments like the HIL (Hockey India League) and international matches are increasingly using player mics to enhance the broadcasting experience for Indian viewers.

5. Where can I watch these crazy goalie moments?

You can find them by searching for hashtags like #hockey, #goalie, and #shorts on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.

Remembering This Iconic Goalie Fight From The Battle Of Alberta 🥊

Remembering the Iconic Goalie Fight: A Legendary Moment in the Battle of Alberta

In the world of professional ice hockey, few rivalries carry the raw intensity and historical weight of the Battle of Alberta. While the rivalry between the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers has seen countless goals and bone-crushing hits, one moment stands tall in the memory of fans worldwide: the legendary goalie fight between Mike Smith and Cam Talbot.

For sports enthusiasts in India, where field hockey is a national pride, the high-octane aggression of ice hockey might seem startling. However, the 2020 clash between these two titans remains a masterclass in sporting drama and team loyalty.

The Setting: February 1, 2020

The stage was set at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. Tensions had been simmering for weeks following a series of physical encounters between the two teams. In the NHL (National Hockey League), when two neighbours like Calgary and Edmonton meet, the atmosphere is electric. But no one expected the “unspoken rule” of hockey—that goalies stay in their nets—to be shattered so spectacularly.

The Spark and the Explosion

The game was already a high-scoring frenzy. Late in the second period, a massive multi-player brawl erupted near the Oilers’ net. As players from both sides grappled, Edmonton’s Mike Smith didn’t just stay a spectator. He skated to centre ice, raised his gloved hand, and challenged Calgary’s Cam Talbot.

In hockey culture, a “goalie fight” is a rare, mythical event. It signifies the ultimate peak of a rivalry. Talbot accepted, skating out to meet Smith. What followed was a flurry of haymakers that sent the crowd into a state of absolute delirium. It wasn’t just a fight; it was a statement of intent from two teams that genuinely despised losing to one another.

Why This Moment Mattered

While India celebrates hockey for its tactical brilliance and grass-surface skill, the Canadian version on ice incorporates “the code”—the idea that players police themselves. The Smith vs. Talbot fight was the climax of a decade-long wait for the Battle of Alberta to truly “return” to its 1980s glory days. It showed that despite the modern era’s focus on speed and skill, the raw emotion of the sport remains its beating heart.

Conclusion

The goalie fight between Mike Smith and Cam Talbot remains an iconic chapter in NHL history. For Indian fans discovering the world of ice hockey, this event serves as the perfect introduction to the passion and intensity of the Battle of Alberta. It wasn’t just about the punches thrown; it was about the legacy of two cities divided by a highway but united by a fierce love for the game. Even years later, the video of these two netminders squaring off remains one of the most shared clips in sporting history.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is the “Battle of Alberta”?

The Battle of Alberta refers to the intense sports rivalry between the two NHL teams based in the province of Alberta, Canada: the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers.

2. Why do goalies fight in ice hockey?

Goalie fights are rare and usually occur when a game becomes exceptionally heated. It is often a way for the goaltender to stand up for their teammates or to signal that the rivalry has reached a breaking point.

3. Who won the fight between Mike Smith and Cam Talbot?

While most fans agree that Mike Smith (Edmonton) landed more significant punches, the event is remembered more for the spectacle itself rather than a “winner” or “loser.” Both players were ejected from the game following the fight.

4. Is fighting legal in ice hockey?

While not “legal” (players receive penalties and often fines), fighting is a long-standing tradition in the NHL used to deter dirty play and protect star players. In the Battle of Alberta, it is considered part of the rivalry’s DNA.

5. Where can Indian fans watch the NHL?

Indian fans can stream NHL games and highlights via various OTT platforms like Disney+ Hotstar or the official NHL YouTube channel for classic moments like the Battle of Alberta.

Can an Ice Hockey Goalie Score a Goal? 🏒🥅 #shorts #hockey #nhl

Can an Ice Hockey Goalie Score a Goal? Exploring NHL History

Ice hockey is a game of lightning-fast speed, bone-crunching hits, and strategic brilliance. For sports fans in India, who are increasingly following international leagues like the NHL, one question often pops up while checking hockey scores: Can an ice hockey goalie actually score a goal?

The short answer is: Yes! While their primary job is to stand like a wall between the pipes, goalies can, and occasionally do, find the back of the net. However, it is one of the rarest and most thrilling feats in professional sports.

How Does a Goalie Score?

In ice hockey, there are two primary ways a goaltender is credited with a goal:

  • The Direct Shot: This happens when the opposing team pulls their goalie for an extra attacker (usually in the final minutes of a game). The goalie stops the puck and shoots it across the entire length of the ice into the empty net.
  • The “Own Goal” Rule: If a player on the opposing team accidentally puts the puck into their own empty net during a delayed penalty, the goal is credited to the last player on the scoring team to touch the puck. Sometimes, that player happens to be the goalie.

A Rare Feat in NHL History

Since the inception of the NHL, goalie goals have remained legendary occurrences. The first goalie to ever be credited with a goal was Billy Smith of the New York Islanders in 1979. However, the first goalie to actually shoot the puck into the net was Ron Hextall in 1987.

When you are tracking hockey scores on apps or sports news sites, seeing a “1” next to a goalie’s name is the ultimate statistical anomaly. Famous names like Martin Brodeur (who has three career goals) and Linus Ullmark have etched their names into history by achieving this rare feat.

Why is it so Difficult?

For Indian viewers used to the dynamics of field hockey or football, the challenge in ice hockey is unique. A goalie wears heavy, bulky equipment that limits mobility. To score, they must possess incredible precision to launch the puck over the “neutral zone” and avoid opposing defenders, all while ensuring the puck doesn’t result in an “icing” call if they miss.

The Growing Popularity of Hockey in India

While India is a powerhouse in field hockey, the interest in the NHL and ice hockey is growing rapidly. Viral clips, such as #shorts on YouTube featuring goalie goals, have introduced a new generation of Indian sports fans to the intensity of the rink. Fans are now regularly checking live scores and following stars like Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews.

Conclusion

A goalie scoring a goal is the “Hole-in-One” of the hockey world. It requires a perfect storm of an empty net, a skilled goaltender, and the guts to take a 200-foot shot. While their main duty is to keep the hockey scores low for the opposition, seeing a goalie celebrate a goal of their own is one of the most electric moments in all of sports.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Has an Indian-origin goalie ever played in the NHL?

Yes, Robin Bawa was the first player of Indian descent to play in the NHL, though he was a forward. While there hasn’t been a prominent Indian-origin goalie yet, the sport is diversifying quickly.

2. Does a goalie get points for an assist?

Absolutely! Goalies frequently earn assists by passing the puck to a teammate who then scores. This is much more common than a goalie scoring a goal themselves.

3. What happens if a goalie crosses the red line to score?

In the NHL, a goalie is not allowed to cross the centre red line to participate in play. They must shoot the puck from their own half of the rink.

4. Where can I check live NHL hockey scores in India?

Indian fans can check scores on the official NHL app, major sports websites like ESPN, or follow live updates on Google Sports.

5. Who has the most goals as a goalie in NHL history?

The legendary Martin Brodeur holds the record with three career goals (one in the playoffs and two in the regular season).

History Made! 2 Goalie Goals Scored in 2023 🤯

History Made! 2 Goalie Goals Scored in 2023: Re-writing the Hockey Record Books

In the high-octane world of professional ice hockey, certain events are so rare they feel like glitches in the matrix. While fans usually track hockey scores to see which forwards or defenders are leading the points table, 2023 provided a statistical anomaly that left sports enthusiasts in India and across the globe stunned. For the first time in a single calendar year, two different goaltenders managed to find the back of the net.

A goalie goal is often cited as the “Holy Grail” of individual achievements for those between the pipes. To see it happen once is a treat; to see it happen twice in 2023 was absolute history in the making.

The Magic of the Empty Net: How it Happened

Most goalie goals occur during the final minutes of a game. When a team is trailing by one or two goals, they often “pull” their goalie to add an extra attacker. This leaves their net wide open—a gamble that provides a golden opportunity for a skilled goaltender with a precise shot.

1. Linus Ullmark (Boston Bruins) – February 2023

The first historic moment came from Boston Bruins’ star Linus Ullmark. During a game against the Vancouver Canucks, Ullmark caught a dumped puck, set his feet, and launched a perfect saucer pass across the entire length of the ice. The puck glided into the center of the empty net, cementing his name in hockey folklore. This goal didn’t just impact the hockey scores that night; it energized a Bruins team that was on a record-breaking streak.

2. Tristan Jarry (Pittsburgh Penguins) – November 2023

Keeping the momentum of 2023 alive, Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry decided to join the exclusive club in November. Facing the Tampa Bay Lightning, Jarry seized a loose puck and fired a high-arching shot that landed perfectly in the middle of the offensive zone before sliding home. Jarry became the first goalie in Penguins history to score, proving that 2023 was truly the “Year of the Goalie.”

Why This Matters to Fans in India

While field hockey has long been a staple in Indian sports culture, interest in ice hockey (the NHL and international leagues) is growing rapidly in the subcontinent. Understanding the rarity of these events helps new fans appreciate the skill required. Aiming at a 6-by-4-foot net from nearly 180 feet away, while wearing heavy protective gear, is a feat of incredible hand-eye coordination.

Impact on Statistics and Hockey Scores

When a goalie scores, the hockey scores reflect it just like any other goal, but the psychological impact on the opposing team is immense. It is the ultimate “insurance goal” that almost always guarantees a victory. For bettors and fantasy hockey players, these rare points are game-changers that occur once in a blue moon.

Conclusion

The year 2023 will forever be remembered as the year the “Goalies took over.” With Linus Ullmark and Tristan Jarry both showcasing their offensive prowess, they have set a new standard for modern goaltending. As hockey continues to evolve, these moments remind us that in sports, the unexpected is always just one shot away. Whether you are tracking the latest leagues or just getting into the sport, these historic milestones are what make hockey the most exciting game on ice.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How many goalies have scored in the history of the NHL?

As of late 2023, only 15 different goaltenders have been credited with a total of 17 goals in NHL history. Some were scored via direct shots, while others were the result of being the last player to touch the puck before an “own goal” by the opposing team.

2. Who was the first goalie to ever score a goal in hockey?

Billy Smith of the New York Islanders was the first NHL goalie to be credited with a goal in 1979, although Ron Hextall was the first to actually shoot the puck into the net himself in 1987.

3. Does a goalie goal count towards the team’s final hockey scores?

Yes, a goalie goal is treated exactly like a goal from a forward or defenseman. It adds one point to the team’s total score and is recorded in the official box score.

4. Why don’t goalies try to score more often?

It is extremely risky. If a goalie misses the net, it often results in an “icing” call, bringing the face-off back to their own defensive zone, which gives the opposing team a major advantage.

Two goalie goals in one year for the first time in a decade, with Linus Ullmark and Tristan Jarry each tallying a goal!
