“That was God’s answer” – Player fell through at the last minute on transfer to Manchester United

PUMAS UNAM goalkeeper Keylor Navas says his failed move to Manchester United had no effect on him.

Real Madrid signed the stopper from Levante UD in August 2014 and a year later Manchester United came calling.

Manchester United’s late approach for Navas

At the time, David De Gea was the number 1 at Old Trafford and starring for the Red Devils. His impressive performances for Manchester United caught the attention of Real Madrid.

The La Liga side tried to lure the former Atletico Madrid player back to the Spanish capital. As part of the deal, Real Madrid agreed to let the 39-year-old Costa Rican join Manchester United.

Louis van Gaal was then in charge of the Premier League team and he talked Navas into convincing him. This dual operation was planned to be completed by the deadline of summer 2015.

However, the paperwork related to the move was not submitted before the window closed and the operation collapsed.

Manchester United renewed De Gea’s contract. He ultimately left the English club on a free transfer in 2023 and joined Fiorentina a year later.

AS asked Navas about his failed move to Manchester United, and he said: “He called me at home about four or five o’clock in the afternoon to discuss the possibility. United manager [Van Gaal] Talked to me to try to convince me.

“Then I prayed with my family, asking God to do what was best for us according to His will. The fax did not arrive on time, and that was God’s answer to our prayer.

“It was a frantic few hours getting to and from the airport, medical, reviewing contracts and attending meetings.

“When the deadline passed and the fax did not arrive, everyone was stressed except my wife and me. I said goodbye to the Real Madrid executives who were negotiating and went home very calmly, knowing that something better was about to happen.”

Navas’ unsuccessful move to Manchester United paid off as he won three consecutive Champions League titles with Real Madrid between 2015–18. He left Los Blancos in 2019.

On this success, Nawas said: “I don’t know if something like this will happen again, but apart from great sporting success, it would be very difficult to maintain a high-quality, cohesive group for so many years. There are constant changes in clubs now, and our strong unity was key to achieving those successes.”
