This may be too high a price for Irving. However, if LA isn’t hit with a heavy draft penalty for the Aspiration Scandal, using a future pick to pair Irving with Leonard, and whoever they get with the No. 5 pick, could lead to a very good team next season.

Miami Heat

The Miami Heat are likely to be star hunting this summer after a disappointing finish to the 2025-26 season. Before this year’s trade deadline, reports surfaced that the team was considering a trade for Ja Morant. If they were open to that idea, why not make a move for Irving instead? At least he’s less volatile and has played better over the years.

If they lose Norman Powell in free agency, the Heat will need to fill their scoring void. If healthy, the trio of Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro and Kyrie Irving could make some noise in the East next season.

With 21 points in a 136-11 loss to the Miami Heat, the San Antonio Spurs’ Dylan Harper accomplished a feat in his basketball career, though it was not common during his NBA rookie season: back-to-back 20-point games.

“This is my…this is my first 20-point back-to-back games?” Harper asked in response to a question about scoring more than 20 in consecutive games.

When told he scored 20 or more points in a game eight times, the 20-year-old guard didn’t say much more.

“Oh, wow,” Harper said. “Oh wow.”

The second overall pick of this summer’s draft averaged 19.4 points per game in his only season with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. While other players in the draft class, like former Duke teammates Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel, are hitting those numbers as pros, Harper is averaging just 11.5 points per game this season on a team that holds the second-best record in the West and is equipped with quality depth on the wings.

“We are winning,” Harper said. “The best thing about this league, for me, coming to a team where even though I’m not scoring 20 every night, I get to learn from a great vet, [De’Aaron] Fox, who obviously has been in the league, two-time All-Star, and all that. So, I get to learn from someone like him and be aggressive as well as take a back seat.”

Along with Fox, the Spurs rotation includes Rookie of the Year Stephen Cassel as well as Devin Vassell, who has averaged nearly 19 points per game in two different seasons.

“Yeah, I’m finding my stride, but I think having Steph back and Dev coming back has made the game a lot easier for me,” Harper said. “So much space on the floor. We have a lot of threats, so it really picks my poison. They do a great job of encouraging me to just be me and get off the ball, find open shooters. But if it’s one-on-one, attack.

“So, to be honest, scoring 20 is not the main thing. The main thing for me is just to win. And, as long as we win, I am fine.”

With the return of Powell and Herro to the Heat, Saturday was only the 12th game where they were both active in the game together, and the results have been mediocre. There were interesting rotational patterns where Herro and Powell played in different lineups rather than playing on the court together. When they were on the floor at the same time, it felt like action.

However, the two got extended minutes with each other on Saturday as they played 14 minutes, and defensively it wasn’t the best, with Miami outscoring the Magic by three points in that time. There could be a discussion about one starting and the other coming off the bench, Powell, who has recently come off the bench, scored 20 points on Saturday.

One can easily see how strange it would be for Powell to have an All-Star season early on and then become a reserve later on. However, there have been plenty of wins with either Powell or Herro out, creating a potentially uncomfortable situation for Spoelstra and one of the players to concede.

However, the hope is that in these final 14 games, the Heat can make the Powell-Herro tandem work and solidify their spot in the Eastern Conference. There’s no denying that both have great offensive abilities on the field, but concerns on defense are legitimate.

Once again, Giannis’ postgame comments add to the mystery of what’s really going through his mind regarding a potential offseason departure. It’s very clear that Antetokounmpo wants to win, and if he can’t do it with the Bucks, maybe he can do it with Bam in Miami.

After all, from Antetokounmpo’s own comments it sounds like Adebayo is his ideal future teammate.

“Obviously, whenever I play against Bam, it’s always extra motivation. I think he’s one of the best players in the NBA,” Giannis said Thursday night in Miami. “One of the best two-way players in the NBA. One of the best 4-5 players in the league.”

The Milwaukee Bucks suffered a blow against the Miami Heat on Thursday at Kasia Center when Ousmane Dieng missed the remainder of the contest due to an illness.

Dieng has been playing well since the Bucks acquired him from the Chicago Bulls before the trade deadline, even earning a starting spot right away.

Milwaukee announced on the air that he would not return to the game. Dieng, who was subbed out in the third quarter, failed to score in 14 minutes.

Summer experience with Suns shapes Haywood Highsmith’s veteran presence

After the Brooklyn Nets waived him, Highsmith signed a two-year veteran minimum contract with Phoenix. ATLANTA – The Atlanta Hawks started the second half of the season with a road win, an environment they have been quite comfortable in this year. As of Friday, the Hawks were 17-15 on the road.

It’s home games where they lag (10-16 record), and that was the case in their 128-97 loss to the Miami Heat. The Hawks took a flat approach to start the game, while the Heat were clicking on both sides of the ball.

It was the second quarter where the Hawks came alive, and with a run started by Corey Kispert and CJ McCollum, they saw a 15-point deficit disappear.

“We played with better pace,” McCallum said. “We came out and ran. I think in the first quarter, we got our sea legs back and we didn’t come out and run. Didn’t get a chance to get stops.

“In the second quarter, we came out and ran. Corey got a dunk and a transition three. Got some rim pressure, got some kick out three eyes out. I think that was the difference.”

The Hawks trailed 57-51 at halftime and with little momentum. Unfortunately, they went back to their old habits and the Heat never looked back in the second half, taking a 34-point lead in the fourth quarter.

“They went into the zone to start the fourth quarter and I think that changed the game,” McCollum said. “They took advantage of some turnovers and missed shots. I don’t think we did enough to win. [Tyler] Hero got down. He’s got a lot more freedom, a lot more space in his pick and roll, and a lot more space in his pull-ups. I think a lot of guys hurt us tonight, and I think we didn’t deserve to win this game.”

The Heat had 72 points in the paint to the Hawks’ 38. They were defeated 58-46. Plus, they got 20 points off their turnovers. The only thing that went good for the Hawks in this game was that they shot 42% from the three-point line, but that was still not enough to win.

“I think when we follow the game plan, and we come out and execute the game plan, that’s when we play our best. I don’t think we did a good job of executing the game plan tonight,” Jalen Johnson said.

The Hawks were coming up by one, but they didn’t use it as an excuse for the loss.

“I would have liked to have gone to bed before 3 a.m. last night, but they beat us to it,” McCallum said. “It’s the same. They came out, they played better than us. They started well. They got points in transition, they got threes, they got rim pressure. Tonight they did what they wanted. So back-to-back or not, they did enough to win, and we didn’t do enough.”

The Hawks have four consecutive games to correct their mistakes for their home woes this season, and they are coming against opponents who haven’t had the best performances this year.
