Stephen A. Holmgren destroyed for weak Game 1 vs Spurs and Wembanyama

ESPN talking head Stephen A. Smith took on Oklahoma City Thunder star Chet Holmgren on Tuesday morning for his seriously poor performance in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals against the San Antonio Spurs and rival Victor Wambayama.

On Monday night, NBA fans were treated to a spectacular clash between the Western powerhouse Spurs and Thunder. And much to the dismay of the Oklahoma City fans, San Antonio was able to pick up a crucial win in Game 1. For the most part, all of the game’s top stars shined. However, there was one major exclusion: Holmgren.

The first-time All-Star, who received a massive five-year, $239 million contract before the season, had only eight points and seven shots in 41 minutes. Yet, in addition to his almost non-existent play on offense, there was also the fact that Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault decided to put Alex Caruso and Jalen Williams on the 7-foot-5 Wambayama instead of Holmgren in the fourth quarter and overtime.

It was a nightmare night for Holmgren compared to his perceived rival Vembanyama. His performance was something ESPN’s Smith took time to talk about on Tuesday morning’s episode of take first. Questioning the inner toughness of the four-year veteran.

Stephen A.: ‘Where the hell is Chet Holmgren?’

“Chet Holmgren, what’s going on?” Smith began by saying. “All this noise we’ve heard all these years, you’ll hear all this [Holmgren and Wembanyama] Don’t get along or don’t really like each other. I understand he is 7 feet 5 inches, but hey brother, you are not 6 feet 5 inches. You are 7 feet 1 inch tall. You have the skills, you can play. I’m looking at it, and Wembley is doing what he’s doing, but comparing it to Chet Holmgren who is doing nothing offensively, it’s like damn.

“Then, when you see Wembanyama close things down in overtime, you can’t have Alex Caruso or Jalen Williams guarding him [in the paint]. Chet Holmgren is supposed to be going, ‘Coach, I’ve got this job,” he added. “It can’t be cats a foot shorter than him trying to guard him in the paint… Where the hell is Chet Holmgren?”

Vembanyama posted 41 points, 24 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and made some big shots in their 122-115 double overtime win. Smith described Holmgren’s Game 1 plan as “dangerous” and said the big man “must accept the challenge” of guarding an MVP candidate or they will not return to the NBA Finals next month.

Chet Holmgren avoids discussion of ‘dangerous’ dynasty politics

The Oklahoma City Thunder have become the envy of the league. They have such a deep core, led by arguably the best player in the NBA in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and their core trio of Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams are at their peak. In fact, Holmgren and Williams, aged 23 and 24 respectively, have not even entered yet and yet have already won a title – which is more than many of the young and promising teams they have achieved.

When a young team becomes so elite so quickly, it’s hard to avoid the topic of whether or not they can develop into a dynasty – a team that runs the NBA for years. But Holmgren can’t get ahead of himself, because he knows the realities of the NBA make it hard to imagine anything happening.

“I think it’s a dangerous thing to try to think about because of how delicate things are in the NBA. We see it all the time. How quickly things can change, and nothing is guaranteed. So you really have to focus on each individual day,” Holmgren said in an appearance at The Arena.

“It’s one thing to bring things into existence, it’s another to distract yourself. So I think I’ll avoid distracting myself.”

That’s the healthiest mindset of any NBA champion, and it’s one of the many reasons the Thunder are favored to win the Larry O’Brien Trophy once again in June.

The reality of the new CBA is that teams cannot retain their talented core for long, as winning teams become expensive very quickly. Next season, Holmgren and Williams are going to be on max contracts, pushing the Thunder so deep into the waters of the second apron.

Be that as it may, OKC has plenty of first-round picks to replenish the roster once they need to cut down their payroll, and they’re primed to win for the next few years.

Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein, Lou Dort on injury report for Nets clash

The Oklahoma City Thunder could continue their five-game road trip by facing the Brooklyn Nets without three starters – All-Star Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein and Lou Dort. The Thunder clinched a playoff spot after defeating the Orlando Magic, becoming the first team to do so this season, while extending their winning streak to eight. Oklahoma City improved to 54–15.

However, if the defending champions are to extend their streak to nine, the Thunder will have to do it without Dortch and Hartenstein, with Holmgren listed as questionable on the injury report. Hartenstein, who returned from a left foot injury last week, is out due to management. Dort is out due to rest, and Holmgren, who is still recovering from a left hip injury, is listed as questionable.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 40 points, five rebounds and four steals in Tuesday’s win against the Magic. Chet Holmgren added 20 points, 12 rebounds and one block. Lou Dortch had five points and two rebounds and Isaiah Hartenstein had eight assists, seven rebounds and a block.

Alex Caruso addresses memorable play in Thunder’s win

One of the most memorable moments of the Thunder’s 113–108 win against the Magic occurred in the first half when Alex Caruso used his shoe to block a shot. Caruso, who was charged with goaltending and technical fouls during the game, admitted she regrets doing the dramahe said, according to Justin Martinez of The Oklahoman.

Caruso said, “I’d never been in that situation before. It came next to me. So, I was like I’m going to use it.” “I just thought I was going to block it. Honestly, I didn’t know what the call was going to be. I didn’t know it was going to be goaltending and a take. If I had known that, I probably wouldn’t have made it.”

When Caruso realized it was too late to put his shoe back on during the game, he decided to use it.

“As soon as I got my shoe in my hands, I was thinking of using it,” Caruso said. “Not in a malicious way, but I’m going to try to make a play to stop the ball. It’s one of those weird NBA plays that probably won’t happen for the next 10 years.”

Caruso finished with two points, eight rebounds and two steals in Tuesday’s win against the Magic.

Chet Holmgren opens up about playing at Madison Square Garden

After playing his second game at Madison Square Garden, Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Chet Holmgren discussed the importance of playing in the Mecca following his 28 points in a 103–100 win against the New York Knicks. What Holmgren called playing at Madison Square Garden – “a hooper’s dream” – is true for many young NBA players.

Holmgren scored 22 of his 28 points in the first half and finished with six threes. The Thunder All-Star quickly found his offense before his team was able to hold off the Knicks.

“Just trying to find open space. From there, most of my teammates were looking at me and then hitting shots,” Holmgren said. “We’ve had a lot of close games. I felt like we did a pretty good job of getting into the right thing. We made enough plays on both ends to close it out. Obviously, they made some plays, too. They haven’t fully converted yet, and if they do, it’s a different-looking game. But that’s how basketball goes.

“Obviously, we want to get better. We want to keep getting better. Find out from this game how we can get better. It’s a tough league, and you always take wins. You never take it for granted. A win is a win.”

Perhaps it was the bright lights of MSG that helped Holmgren find his offensive rhythm in the Thunder’s three-point win against the Knicks.

Holmgren said, “It doesn’t matter if you have 100 points; it only counts as one win on the record. But it’s always nice to have a good game in the Mecca.” “I’ve only played here once, and I would say that’s definitely my best game at the Garden. So, it’s amazing. And on top of that, we were able to win the game, which is even better.”

Holmgren’s scoring was 11 of 19 from the floor, including 6 of 11 from deep, eight rebounds and two assists. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 26 points, eight assists and one steal.

After the Thunder lost Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein, All-Stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren led the defending champions to a close win on the road. Caruso suffered a left hip injury, and Hartenstein was also ruled out for the night with a left calf injury. Heading to Madison Square Garden, Holmgren says he can feel the positive spirit from his teammates, as the Thunder end their three-game road trip on a high note.

“Playing in the Garden is any hooper’s dream,” Holmgren said. “The juices were flowing, and we were ready to play.”

The Thunder, riding a four-game winning streak, will host the Warriors on Saturday.

‘Hooper’s dream,’ Chet Holmgren says after close win against Knicks

There’s something about the bright lights of Madison Square Garden that brings out the best in the NBA’s rising stars. For Oklahoma City Thunder big man Chet Holmgren, Wednesday night was the perfect stage to show why he is a fundamental part of a championship contender.

In a back-and-forth battle leading up to the final possession, the Thunder defeated the New York Knicks 103–100. Holmgren was the focal point of the attack, finishing with 28 points and eight rebounds. He made 11 of 19 shots from the field and hit six crucial three-pointers, silencing the boisterous New York crowd every time the Knicks threatened to pull away.

After the game, Holmgren did not hide his excitement about performing in the world’s most famous arena. “Playing in the Garden is any hooper’s dream,” Holmgren said. “The juices were flowing, and we were ready to play”. His defensive presence was equally impressive, as he stopped multiple drives by Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns in the final minutes.

The win didn’t come easy, especially with Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein suffering minor injuries earlier in the evening in Oklahoma City. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 26 points and eight assists, providing the steady leadership needed to earn the win on a tough road. For the Knicks, Anthony-Towns led the way with 17 points, but late turnovers proved costly as the Thunder’s defense crumbled.

The Thunder remain on top of the Western Conference standings, and games like this prove they have the mental toughness to win in adverse environments. As Holmgren continues to develop into a two-way force, the rest of the league is beginning to realize that “Hooper’s dream” is becoming a reality in OKC.

Thunder’s Chet Holmgren launches new Nike KD 18 PE sneakers

Most of the rookies and young stars in the NBA grew up watching Kevin Durant of the Rockets as one of the greatest scorers the game has ever seen. Durant essentially changed the meaning of scoring as a seven-foot player, something Oklahoma City Thunder forward Chet Holmgren certainly modeled his game after growing up. As a tribute to arguably his biggest influence, Holmgren will be releasing upcoming PE colorways of Durant’s signature Nike KD 18.

Check out our sneakers news for more upcoming releases and breaking content!

Upon entering the league in 2022, Holmgren signed a multi-year endorsement deal with Nike that includes sneaker sponsorship. While Holmgren is still waiting to make the leap into his own signature sneaker model, he has favored the Nike KD series during most of his time in the NBA. It’s fitting since both players share a similar tall frame and Holmgren has been modeling his game after Durant since playing AAU.

The Nike KD 18 serves as Kevin Durant’s latest sneaker in his illustrious signature catalog, which Nike has attempted to revive with retro releases of KD’s past sneakers this year. These upcoming Chet Holmgren PEs (Player Exclusive) will be arriving as retail releases within the coming months.

Nike KD 18 PE (Chet Holmgren)

Giving fans additional information about release dates during the 2026 NBA All-Star Weekend, Holmgren confirmed the upcoming release of “Camo” and “Thunder & Rain” colorways of the Nike KD 18. The first to feature is a “Camo” colorway arriving on March 13th, 2026. Coyote/Security Orange-Medium Brown Outdoor-inspired attire. Based on Brown and Olive Green, we see a Real-Tree pattern across the upper and accents in the iconic Safety Orange known to all outdoorsmen.

The following “Thunder and Rain” pairing comes as a surprise Space Purple/Multicolor-Pure Purple Color scheme. Holmgren rocked these during the Thunder’s season opener against the Rockets and Kevin Durant, making these a special pair in his PE collection. The majority of the shoe is constructed in purple, with cheetah print panels on the underlying layers, giving it an undeniable Prince vibe given Holmgren’s roots in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Both pairs will be releasing alongside each other in exclusive Nike SNKRS drops on March 13th, 2026. The pairs come in limited quantities in full sizes and as Holmgren said, “Once they run out, there won’t be any more.”

Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander didn’t hold back his emotions about missing overtime during Friday’s showdown against fellow MVP candidate Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets. After leading the Thunder to erase a 16-point deficit in the second half, Gilgeous-Alexander was forced to miss the rest of the game. He reached his scheduled minutes for his first game back after suffering an abdominal strain.

Still, that didn’t make the process any easier, as Gilgeous-Alexander cheered the Thunder against the Nuggets from the bench during the final period of the game.

“I hate it. I can’t wait for the minutes restriction to go away,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “But if I rehash this injury, it won’t make any difference. So, that’s the way I look at it.”

Despite the fact that 2025-26 has been Thunder forward Chet Holmgren’s first All-Star season, serious back injuries have cropped up from time to time throughout the year. Given Holmgren’s questionable status for Tuesday’s match, it is difficult to predict whether he will play or not.

As the Thunder continue on their regular season schedule without All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Ajay Mitchell and possibly Alex Caruso, who missed Sunday’s game against the Cavs with a left ankle sprain. Caruso has been listed as doubtful, as has Holmgren.

Coming off his first All-Star selection, Holmgren has helped the Thunder pick up wins against the Brooklyn Nets and Cleveland Cavs on Sunday. He has been the defending champions’ defensive anchor, cleaning up the glass in the paint.

The Raptors upset the Thunder in their last meeting in January. Holmgren finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds in a game where Gilgeous-Alexander was available, as the Raptors defeated the defending champions in a 103–101 victory. The Thunder may have to avenge that loss without moving on.

When it comes to the question of whether Chet Holmgren is playing tonight against the Raptors, the answer is probably.

Chet Holmgren points to health when asked about Nuggets’ growth

During his first appearance at All-Star weekend, a reporter asked Oklahoma City Thunder forward Chet Holmgren about the growth he has seen with the Denver Nuggets. The Thunder’s Holmgren discussed his personal growth this season ahead of his first All-Star Game selection. However, he was hesitant to talk about how much the Nuggets have improved as a team.

Instead, Holmgren discussed the injuries the Nuggets have experienced this season, much like the Thunder’s injury-plagued campaign.

“Denver has some different players on the roster who have taken some steps this summer,” Holmgren said. “They were a really good team last year. They’re a really good team this year. They’ve had some injuries, as we have, as everybody in the league has. Hopefully, they can get those guys back, and we can get all our guys back. At the end of the day, every team wants to be completely healthy and playing at their best. So, that’s what we’re hoping for.”

The Nuggets were without All-Star Nikola Jokic for more than a month. The Thunder have been missing Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the last five games. Oklahoma City has also struggled with injuries to Jalen Williams, who has missed 30+ games this season; starting center Isaiah Hartenstein, who has missed 16 games; And Ajay Mitchell, who has been out since January 21.

Holmgren said, “I thought it was good. I thought everybody out there was playing a good brand of basketball.” “It felt like, I guess you would say, a pick-up game, and when there’s that level of talent on the field, it’s always fun, it’s always good.”

He also talked about the ring he received for his All-Star selection, which was unexpected for Holmgren.

Holmgren said, “It was pretty cool. I didn’t know you could get an All-Star ring until I got it.” “So, it was pretty cool. It comes with a little box with a little video in it. It’s too bad, but I think I like our ring from last year a little more.”

Holmgren says he treasures the moment of his first All-Star Game.

“I definitely tried to take a moment during pictures yesterday and then warming up and playing the game today and think what a great opportunity this is,” Holmgren said. “I felt like I was beautiful most of the time. Just taking it all in.”

Holmgren and the Thunder resume their regular season schedule when they host the Nets on Friday.

While fourth-year forward Jalen Williams made his All-Star case for the Thunder’s Chet Holmgren, most would agree that it was a no-brainer. Ahead of his first All-Star appearance on Sunday, Holmgren discussed the work he’s done leading to arguably the best season of his career.

“I would call that all work that’s not in the game,” Holmgren said. “It’s the preparation before games, the morning shoots, the work over the summer; all the stuff that no one sees – the rehab from injuries. If you didn’t do it, no one would know about it. But at the end of the day, once you get on the court, it’s right there in the air.”

Holmgren is averaging career bests in points per game (17.4), field-goal percentage (56%), and rebounds (8.7).

Devin Booker can’t escape Chet Holmgren, Tyrese Maxey’s All-Star weekend ‘UNC’ label

Phoenix Suns All-Star Devin Booker revealed that while the 3-Point Contest invite surprised him last weekend, he couldn’t escape the OG label from others, including first-time All-Star Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Booker, 29, was the elder statesman of Team USA stars, among his fifth selections at the star-studded event.

For this, seeing Booker on the same team as him came as a surprise For Holmgren.

“Is that Devin Booker? On the young team? He could stretch it out a few years,” Holmgren said.

76ers All-Star Tyrese Maxey gave Booker the same treatment.

“How are you, old man?” Maxey said, to which Booker resigned from being one of the older players on the All-Star Game team.

“I’m the old man here, huh?” Booker said. “That’s madness.”

In the end, Team USA Stars, including Chet Holmgren and Tyrese Maxey, defeated Team USA Stripes. Nevertheless, this was possibly the first time that Booker was the oldest player on his team.

Suns All-Star Devin Booker fell three points short of winning this year’s 3-Point Contest, losing in the final round as he missed his final three shots that could have crowned him champion. The Blazers’ Damian Lillard won with a final score of 29 to Booker’s 27, despite having the highest score in the final round (30).

According to Duane Rankin of AZ Central, after losing by two points, Booker talked about the 2026 3-Point Contest, which would potentially be the last contest he will participate in.

“It hurt a little bit. I wanted it so bad. I wish I was defending it in Phoenix, but if I get an invite it’ll probably be the last time next year. I’m looking forward to it,” Booker said, according to Duane Rankin of AZ Central, formerly of AZ Central, on Twitter.

Lillard, who missed a game due to his Achilles injury, brought the trophy back to Portland.

The biggest thing Chet Holmgren credits for All-Star leap

Ahead of his first All-Star appearance, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Chet Holmgren explained how he took his game to new heights during Mayday on Saturday. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander supported Holmgren’s first All-Star selection, calling it a no-brainer. Gilgeous-Alexander watches Chet work during practice, but the Thunder starting forward says it’s important to work overtime when no one is watching.

For Holmgren, it’s the extra time he puts into improving his game to the best of his ability that has led to him becoming the All-Star forward he is today.

Thunder forward Chet Holmgren is grateful for his first All-Star selection. Before All-Star weekend, Holmgren reacted to Chet’s move to Los Angeles after his first All-Star selection.

“It means a lot. I have a lot of people I have to be grateful for – the help they’ve given me along the way. From family friends, coaches, old teammates, current teammates, the Thunder, the opportunity they gave me and the situation they put me in. I’m just forever grateful for that,” Holmgren said.

“I always say I would never play or give a chance to things of that nature, but that doesn’t mean there’s gratitude for it, and there’s no understanding of the seriousness of it. I’m extremely grateful, and I just feel like I have to keep going, and I have a lot of [further] To go.”

Holmgren will play for Team USA Stars along with Timberwolves All-Star Anthony Edwards, Suns’ Devin Booker, Raptors’ Scottie Barnes, 76ers’ Tyrese Maxey, Pistons All-Star tandem Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren and Hawks’ Jalen Johnson.
