Newhook Supremacy, Second Round Schedule, Hutson

Here are the Montreal Canadiens and NHL news items you may have missed on Monday.

montreal canadiens news

  • The Habs are one of the best teams in the NHL when it comes to handling adversity. On Monday night, Alex Newhook again played the hero and won his second series in a row. The Newfoundlander has been one of the most important players in the playoffs, stepping up when the Canadiens needed him most. [Canadiens Highlights: Newhook Clinches The Series]
  • See! The return of the playoff classic.
  • Whenever you’re on a list with Jacques Lemaire, Larry Robinson, Frank Mahovlich and Henry Richard, you know you’re in great company. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to suggest that now that Lane Hutson is on the list he is in better company.
  • Russ Courtnall, Claude Lemieux, and Yvon Lambert are also a pretty solid list.
  • It may not have been a good goal, but it can’t be denied that Newhook has fallen short in these playoffs.
  • There are few things more enjoyable than watching a young team win an exciting game.
  • The Habs won, so we don’t need to dwell on this game for too long, but it’s ridiculous that there was no penalty when the Sabers ran down Dobbs for the second time in the series.

  • The winds of change are blowing with the Edmonton Oilers. One of those changes could involve Craig Berube. Recently, the Oilers relieved Mark Stuart and Chris Knoblauch of their coaching duties. Now, they must act quickly and accurately to add a new head coach who can help them cross the finish line. Bruce Cassidy was earlier associated with this franchise, but now a new name has emerged. [Edmonton Oilers]
  • Is Nico Hischier going to cost the New Jersey Devils more than $11 million per season for the next eight years? The latest AFP Analytics offseason contract projections indicate that may very well be the case. The Devils have a lot of answers to answer under new general manager, Sunny Mehta. [New York Devils]
  • Since ancient times, undue importance has been given to low-sized prospects. Look no further than Cole Caufield, the 5-foot-7 Montreal Canadiens 50-goal scorer who fell to 15th overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. The New Jersey Devils could take advantage of that bias towards smaller players by selecting Viggo Bjork if he is still available with their 12th overall pick in the first round on June 26. Angstrom Moved, Most Valuable Canadiens, Hutson

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed on Monday.

montreal canadiens news

  • The Canadiens opted to send defenseman Adam Engstrom to the Laval Rocket (AHL). Laval is in the midst of its own playoff push, currently trailing 2-1 in its series against the Toronto Marlies. They will be in a better position now that their best defenseman of the regular season is back. This also means that Noah Dobson is no longer in danger of missing any games due to an upper body injury.
  • We asked Canadiens fans who they thought was the team’s most valuable player in the first round, and the results definitely won’t surprise you. The name of Jacob Dobbs came up early and often. That being said, there were several other Habs players who deserved praise for their performance against the Tampa Bay Lightning. [Canadiens MVPs From The First Round Of NHL Playoffs]
  • Head coach Martin Saint-Louis was clearly excited after the series win against the Lightning. Apparently he’s also a big fan of The Wolf of Wall Street.
  • Phenom Len “Wayne” Hutson received high praise from the National Hockey League Players Association.
  • There’s no doubt that Nick Suzuki (and the rest of the first line) could have performed better at 5v5 in the first round, but all things considered, he still had a good series, as evidenced by the fact that he led the team in scoring along with Hutson (6 points).
  • Head coach Martin Saint-Louis opined on Suzuki’s results, suggesting that his captain improved as the series progressed.
  • Dobbs is one of the most competitive athletes you will ever meet. Surprising or not, he takes every game quite seriously.

  • The 2026 NHL Draft Lottery could completely reshape the future of the league, with multiple teams competing for the No. 1 overall pick. While some franchises enter as clear favorites, history shows that the lottery often springs surprises. [NHL]
  • The New Jersey Devils’ decision to trade Sunny Mehta out from under the Toronto Maple Leafs is looking like pure highway robbery, as the Leafs selected John Chayka as their new general manager on Monday. [New Jersey Devils]
  • The Carolina Hurricanes are no strangers to the heated competition of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, nor are they unfamiliar with the vice grip-like pressure of their opponents’ passionate fan bases. However, Saturday was a step into uncharted territory with an in-depth statement from an unexpected source.[Carolina Hurricanes]

Montreal Canadiens News and Notes

Three of Juraj Slafkowski’s goals came on the power play, but it was really Montreal’s work at 5v5 that should be considered the most encouraging aspect of the Game 1 win. The Habs swept the Tampa Bay Lightning, and by a wide margin. [Canadiens Playoff Analysis: The Key Statistic From Game One Win]

Slafkowski praised head coach Martin St-Louis for his wise use of timeouts against the Lightning. Rather than wait for another opportunity, or lose it on the time clock, St.-Louis decided to call a timeout at the beginning of overtime, which immediately led to Slafkowski’s game-winning goal.

He also noted that Canadiens work as a pack, with each player leading the hunt in the same direction.

Speaking of Slafkovsky, despite excellent work on the powerplay, he was clearly the team’s best player at 5v5. He had more individual high-danger scoring chances at 5v5 (three) than the entire Tampa Bay Lightning lineup (one).

The excitement in practice following the 4-3 overtime win against the Bolts was impeccable.

The Canadiens did not produce a terrible effort against the Tampa Bay Lightning in game two, however, as some costly mistakes cost the Bolts a 3–2 overtime victory, including a terrible pass attempt by Juraj Slafkowski. That being said, Slafkowski was far from the only player who made a mistake on Tuesday night. [Canadiens Highlights: Exciting Overtime Loss]

The Habs players were quite composed after the disappointing loss. As Mike Matheson explained, they always knew they were going to face a talented team in the Lightning.

It remains to be seen if head coach Martin Saint-Louis will make any lineup changes before Game Three on Friday, but there are some good options if he decides to change things up.

While the Canadiens generated more high-danger opportunities than the Lightning at 5v5, the momentum shifted strongly to Tampa Bay’s corner about midway through the game. [NST]

With all due respect to Arbor Zekaj, I was expecting him to write “I want it this way” in the first few notes.

Sniper Cole Caufield was the latest athlete to pour his heart out to the Players’ Tribune, in a brilliant piece that can only be described as heartfelt and honest. “To me, hockey is the best game because you can’t really do it alone. Scoring 50 this year was amazing, but it was a team accomplishment. And really, it’s about the whole environment you’re in. The Bell Center has been incredible all season, and scoring No. 50 in front of all you guys and with my dad in the building… it was a great wave to go into these playoffs.” [Players’ Tribune]

Caufield also discussed the upcoming game at the Bell Center and the impact Canadiens fans have on the team’s motivation.

The top four have struggled when it comes to shutting down the Lightning, however, the third pairing of Jaden Struble and Arbor Zekaj has stood out. Take a look at how the Canadiens’ defensemen have performed so far in the playoffs. [Canadiens Need Better Results From Top Four]

With the series tied at 1-1, we also take a look at which forward lines have performed well, and which trios need to up their game against the Bolts. [Which Canadiens Lines Are Performing Best In Playoffs]

Zekaj doesn’t seem particularly concerned about Tampa’s continued slickness. He’s got a point, because the Habs have created a lot more high-danger scoring chances than the Bolts, but getting to the line is always a tough proposition, especially when you’re dealing with habitual line steppers.

Head coach Martin St-Louis joins Zekaj when it comes to not losing any sleep over Tampa’s strategy.

It was another even game, at least on the scoreboard. Thanks to an overtime goal from Len Hutson, the Habs emerged with a 2–1 win and a 2–1 series lead. All things considered, the scoreline was a little favorable towards the Tampa Bay Lightning, a team that generated a fair amount of high-danger scoring chances at 5v5. [Canadiens Highlights: Hutson Plays The Hero In Big Win]

Hutson’s game-winning goal was so good it’s worth watching twice.

It should also be noted that Hutson somehow managed to achieve his goal. This may seem arrogant to some, but we all know that’s not Hutson’s style. He is confident in his game and has the results to back it up.

Captain Nick Suzuki’s dry humor was at play after the thrilling win.

While the first line struggles to generate much offense at even strength, Kirby Dach has done a great job in leading the Canadiens to wins, including a two-point effort on Friday night. It was one of his best games in a Habs uniform since joining the team in 2022.

It’s very easy to dismiss the play of Arbor Czekaj and Jaden Struble on the third pairing, but it would be intellectually dishonest to ignore the fact that they lead all NHL defensemen in expected goal share. Yes, it is easy to play on the third pair, but it is never easy to control more than 80% of the expected goals. [Canadiens Need Better Results From Top Four]

Ivan Demidov sat down with Elliotte Friedman to discuss his rookie season with the Habs, and how they quickly became part of their family.

Tampa Bay’s strategy of rushing players, harassing goaltenders and punching opponents in every scrimmage is backfiring spectacularly. In fact, in addition to the series lead, the Canadiens have actually had more hits than their opponents through three games. [Tampa Bay’s Strategy Is Backfiring In Series Versus Canadiens]

The discrepancy in high-danger shots in the series is hard to ignore. In fact, after three games, the Canadiens have accounted for 75% of high-danger scoring opportunities at 5v5, the highest mark of all teams in the NHL playoffs.

Apart from the physical battle, which the Habs are winning, there are several other reasons why the Canadiens have managed to take the lead in the series, including the excellent play of the third pair of Arbor Czekaj and Jayden Struble. [Top 3 Reasons The Canadiens Have A Series Lead]

Believe it or not, Shekaz leads the entire NHL in expected goal share with an impressive 83.8%. [NST]

Kirby Dach discusses support from head coach Martin Saint-Louis as he overcomes an endless list of injuries in recent seasons.

This is clearly trolling, but comparatively speaking, it is quality trolling. Additionally, given that Brady Tkachuk appears to be one of the worst leaders in the league, perhaps it is time to examine his position in the Senators organization. Or maybe he is a great leader who never seems to have luck when it comes to leadership. Difficult to say.

The clip embedded below has nothing to do with the Habs, but when a dirtbag like Ridley Gregg starts punching a player who’s being pinned down, it’s hard not to roll your eyes. That is pure cowardice.

The Canadiens actually managed to establish their first two-goal lead in the series on Sunday night, but it was not enough, as a late-game surge by the Lightning resulted in a 3–2 loss, tying the series at two games apiece in the process. [Canadiens Highlights: Late-Game Collapse Costs Habs]

There was no chance that the New Jersey Devils were going to let Sunny Mehta slip through their fingers. Sunny Mehta is eight days into his Devils tenure and has already endeared himself to the New Jersey organization and fans in his introductory press conference. Yet, just nine days ago, there was real interest and possibility that Mehta could be the next man in charge of the Toronto Maple Leafs. [New Jersey Devils]

A little number 86 flying around the ice playing with the puck on his stick? That must be Jack Hughes, right? Actually, it’s Buffalo Sabers rookie, Noah Ostlund. When the Sabers learned they were losing Josh Norris to injury in Game 3, it caused a bit of panic. [Buffalo Sabres]

There’s no love lost between the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators during the Round One matchup in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and after the events of Game 3, it’s safe to say that the general feeling of dislike has grown even deeper after Jake Sanderson left the game following a check to the head of Taylor Hall. Hutson plays hero in big win

The Montreal Canadiens host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday night, with the winner looking to emerge with a commanding 2-1 series lead.

As is tradition, the Canadiens held a spectacular ceremony, with team legend Yvan Cournoyer also in attendance. Not that they needed much help, but thanks to the Roadrunners, the Bell Center faithful immediately created a great atmosphere in another intense matchup.

It was another tied game, with the Canadiens taking the series lead thanks to an overtime goal by phenom Lane Hutson.

Let’s look at the highlights!

secondary scoring

Frenchman Alexandre Texier took the early lead for the Canadiens, taking advantage of a smart game that featured great assists from Zachary Bolduc and Kirby Dach.

The goal was Montreal’s third at 5v5 in this series, the first two goals coming from fourth-line winger Josh Anderson.

Considering that the first line has struggled to generate any sort of sustainable offense, getting production from the bottom six is a significant boon for the Habs.

responding to adverse circumstances

Even though the Canadiens controlled the majority of quality scoring opportunities at 5v5, a recurring theme in this series, the Lightning erased their lead, and quickly established one of their own.

It was the type of situation that could frustrate many teams, but the Habs are at their best when responding to adversity, as evidenced by Kirby Dach’s first goal of the series.

It wasn’t good, but it got the home team back in the mix early, and momentum returned to Montreal’s corner. Additionally, it was another goal away from the bottom six, just what the doctor ordered for a top-lined team starving for goals.

To give you a better idea of the state of mind of the first line, Cole Caufield, who scored 51 goals in the regular season, focused solely on his breakaway opportunity in the third period.

you hate to see it

With all due respect to Nikita Kucherov, who is clearly one of the most talented players in the league, it’s not easy to account for his demise.

His constant pranks are one thing, but when you combine his elite level nonsense with the fact that he has the personality of a frozen bag of carrots, it’s pretty obvious why he’s one of the least friendly players in the league.

On a completely unrelated note, which is obviously devoid of any meanness on my part, enjoy this attempt at Kucherov’s hit.

target setting

Surprisingly, or not, the game required extra time, marking the third consecutive time that these teams failed to find a winner in regulation.

All that matters in these scenarios is the ultimate game winner, but it should be mentioned that the Canadiens were the better team at 5v5, as they outshot the Lightning by a wider margin than in the previous two games.

Montreal’s strong effort was rewarded in overtime, where Hutson scored his second goal of the playoffs to give his team a comfortable 2–1 series lead.

The Montreal Canadiens will return to action on Sunday and face the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 4 of the first-round series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm ET.

Unless otherwise noted, all Montreal Canadiens stats are 5v5. Through the natural state trick.

Hutson hits 70, St. Louis disappoints, Dobbs

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed on Thursday.

montreal canadiens news

Jacob Dobbs finds ways to win easily, including his strong effort in a 2-1 win on Thursday night. The win was his 24th win of the year, more than veteran netminder Patrick Roy had in his rookie season. This was also an important game when discussing Montreal’s playoff prospects. [Canadiens Highlights: Dobes Wins, Surpasses Roy’s Rookie Haul]

Lane Hutson quietly scored 70 points on Thursday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets, becoming the fourth defenseman in franchise history to reach 70 points.

Head coach Martin St. Louis was clearly frustrated with the media Thursday morning, a common occurrence in Montreal. While members of the media have been trying to get as much information as possible ahead of the games, Saint-Louis has made it clear it will be holding its cards as the playoff race heats up.

Forward Alexandre Texier was not in uniform Thursday, replaced by Joe Veleno in the lineup. Texier has been listed as day-to-day due to a lower body injury.

ESPN produced a very interesting segment on top Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael Hayes, discussing a few topics including the unfortunate passing of his father.

Shockingly or not, the team’s two best goalscorers spend a lot of time practicing their goal scoring.

When the Florida Panthers played the Seattle Kraken, it was a game that marked a special milestone and accomplishment for coach Paul Morrissey. Morris, now in his fourth season with the Panthers, became the second player to coach 2,000 NHL games, joining Scotty Bowman. [Florida Panthers]

The Bruins’ road narrative is beginning to change as the schedule gets tougher. There are 10 games remaining in the season, six of which are on the road and seven against playoff teams. In their upcoming leg, the Bruins have three sets of back-to-backs. Only three rivals (Florida, Philadelphia and New Jersey) are out of the playoff picture. [Boston Bruins]

The Detroit Red Wings need to start winning games. After losing in heartbreaking fashion to the Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators, Detroit is one point out of the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs with 11 games remaining in the regular season. Despite scoring 84 points through 71 games, the Red Wings need more. [Detroit Red Wings]
