On Monday night, what was supposed to be a pretty good season for the Los Angeles Lakers came to a disappointing end when they were officially eliminated from the playoffs by the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder. Expectations were always low when top star Luka Doncic suffered a serious hamstring injury just before the postseason began. But the Roosters still showed their ability and courage to reach the semi-finals by defeating the Houston Rockets in the opening round.

Still, roster changes are coming this offseason. NBA legend LeBron James may have played his final game in Los Angeles – and possibly in the league. And DeAndre Ayton will almost certainly opt out of the final year of his deal. While those are notable losses, the Lakers aren’t too far away from being legitimate title contenders in 2026-27. But they still need better rim protection, big-time rebounding and more athletic versatility on defense.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at 10 impact players the LA front office should target this offseason to bolster the roster around young stars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

Sign Isaiah Hartenstein

Although his stats don’t jump off the page, Isaiah Hartenstein makes a notable impact wherever he plays. He is a classic dirty work player who will do whatever is necessary to win and that is what the Lakers need. But beyond those attributes, he is a great rebounder – especially on the offensive boards – a smart and tenacious defender and a skilled passer. If LA can get him for the right price in free agency, he will fill a lot of their needs in the front court.

If Andrew Wiggins opts out of the final year of his contract with the Miami Heat (he is expected to), he should be a target for the Lakers. He is a classic 3-and-D player who would be a great fit on this Lakers team. He can guard many wing defenders Doncic or Reaves can’t despite being a legitimate three-point threat – he shot 41% from beyond the arc in 2025-26. Plus, if it doesn’t work out, he’ll be off the books after next season.

One player who will have a lot of interest in free agency this summer is Denver Nuggets swingman Peyton Watson. He had a breakout season in 2025-26 just in time to make the jump to the open market. Posting 14.6 points, nearly five rebounds and 1.1 blocks a game. Although it may be a small thing at just 23 years old, his success is huge.

With two young players at the core of the roster, the Lakers should target other young players to move forward with them. Watson should be at the top of their wish list. However, the major issue is that he is a restricted free agent, and the Nuggets have a chance to match any offer.

If the Cleveland Cavaliers do not reach the Conference Finals this month, Jarrett Allen will definitely be on the trade block, and the Lakers should be first in line for his services. The one-time All-Star brings the rebounding, rim-protection and lob threat Doncic wanted. He’s no star, but he’d be a perfect fit for LA.

Although he is still owed three years and more than $90 million, it will be worth it as he could address major needs this summer.

Trade for Yves Missy and Herb Jones

If the Lakers want to go a more budget-friendly route to address some issues, another option would be to talk to the New Orleans Pelicans on the phone and inquire about the cost of a trade for center Yves Messi and forward Herb Jones.

Neither of them have impressive offensive stats, but they are impressive defenders the Lakers should target this summer. Jones is a top perimeter defender. Missy is an impressive 21-year-old rim protector who can be further developed. This is not a sexy business, but will yield big profits over the course of the season.

Despite averaging 19 minutes and scoring only five points per game, New York Knicks fans can tell you how valuable Mitchell Robinson is. He is a top-notch defender at the center position and rim protector, but his elite offensive rebounding could be the difference between a playoff team and a contender.

Knicks fans will also tell you how hurt the big man is. He would certainly be a risk for the Lakers, but he’s still only 28 years old and that’s exactly what they need in the middle.

Draft Terrence Reed Jr. with the No. 24 pick

The Lakers clearly have options in the free agency and trade market. But the 2026 NBA Draft is deep and has some gems available at the end of the first round and the beginning of the second round. One player who should be on their radar is Connecticut big man Tyrese Reed Jr.

He is a strong rebounder who is adept at tearing down offensive boards. He is an agile athlete on defense, but he also has a solid offensive game after scoring only 20 points per game for the Huskies last season.

Trade up in Round 2 and draft Zubie Ejiofor

If the Lakers are willing to trade up in the second round of the June event, another interesting target would be St. John’s big man Zubie Ejiofor. The Big East Player of the Year is a good rebounder and effective rim protector (he averages more than two per game) at 6 feet 9 inches tall. His offensive performance has also taken off after averaging 16 points per game last season.

As a potential replacement for LeBron James at power forward, Ejiofor could be a sleeper option early in Round 2.

If the Lakers are looking for an affordable risk with a upside this offseason, 10-year veteran Kristaps Porzingis should be on their radar. His bizarre health problems have seriously affected him in the last two seasons. However, his 2023-24 season with the Boston Celtics showed he can make a serious difference on a title contender if healthy.

Although he is not a beast on the boards, he is a rim protector who is a lopsided threat and can stretch the floor. Due to his recent illnesses, he could come cheap this summer.

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson provided an update on Jarrett Allen’s status on Tuesday, indicating significant progress ahead of the Wine and Gold’s meeting with the Orlando Magic for a three-game homestand.

“They’ve ramped it up over the last few days, so there’s a positive trend,” Atkinson said. “I saw him on the court yesterday, contact. I think we’re in the last stages of preparing him, so I can guess [he’ll return within] The next few games, that window.”

Allen returning to the fold would be a welcome sight for the Cavs, who have missed James Harden with his rim protection and pick-and-roll skills. Cavs receive another important injury update

Elsewhere on the injury front, Atkinson shared the latest news on Jaylon Tyson, who hasn’t played since the fourth quarter of the Cavs’ win over the Chicago Bulls last Thursday. The second-year swingman suffered a sprained left toe and what is now being treated as a bone bruise.

“Not long-term,” Atkinson said of the label change. “He practiced yesterday, and it was bothering him, quite honestly, so we took him out of practice. It’s an injury; definitely not long-term. I can see it being very short-term. It’s going to be a pain to bear. I hope he recovers very quickly.”

Tyson has been a big part of the Cavs’ rotation recently despite his minutes being cut back, so this is solid news regarding his troublesome toe. However, it doesn’t help their case in the current battle for more minutes, as Cleveland tries to figure out who will play the most minutes and who will be in the starting five.

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced Monday night that Jarrett Allen will miss the team’s upcoming three-game road trip due to knee tendinitis, extending his absence to 18 days since the injury. The Cavs are 2-3 without February’s Eastern Conference Player of the Month in their lineup, and there is reason to be uncomfortable. The setback is believed to be minor, but it would have been at least two weeks since Allen last suited up.

“I still think it’s a day-to-day thing,” Cleveland head coach Kenny Atkinson said Sunday afternoon. “That’s where we are with it. I wish I could get more specifics. But I don’t expect it to be long-term. He’s just dealing with some serious tendinitis, and sometimes that happens during the season, right?

“Especially after his stretch and his usage. So I’m thinking it’ll just be a short break, and we’ll get him back in the team soon.”

In two of the Cavs’ last three games, they have given up 128 and 130 points to the Orlando Magic and Dallas Mavericks. The first player shot 51.8% from the field with 37 attempts at the free-throw line, and the second shot 52.9% from the field with 27 attempts at the charity stripe, which is a sign of a bad habit.

Much of the problem can be blamed on a defense that is not consistently protecting the perimeter, with Allen lacking a key rim protector. Combine those two factors, and it’s difficult to keep opponents in check.

Cavs All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell said after a “bad loss” to the Mavs about the need to improve on defense, “Especially now that we don’t have JA in there, sometimes, we’re five short.” “[We have to be better at] To be able to defend, and if we lose, [making] [right] Rotating, and then, keeping them away from the glass. Although we sometimes play small ball, that is no excuse. I think this is the biggest thing. I think our defense was the only issue.

It’s probably at first because they want to get to the rim, so they’ll drive and drive and drive. Try to get them live from the outside.”

According to the star duo, this Cavs group has too much talent to worry about putting the ball in buckets.

Harden said, “Offensively, we’re very talented. Defensively we need to get better.” “We can score with the best of them. It’s important to get consistent stops and rely on our defense to win games.”

“I mean, I’m not really worried about the offensive piece,” Mitchell said. “We had 16 turnovers for 25 points; it affects your transition defense. You can’t get set even when we have Evan [Mobley] At 5. But I think the biggest thing is just stopping the ball and then staying in our rotation. It’s just the finer details, and we have to get better.”

Mobley has had success when Allen has been absent, but he has also been able to rely on perimeter players generally holding their own. Mitchell specifically pointed this out on Sunday, but Cleveland hasn’t been able to put anyone up front for a week. This results in overhelp, which takes teammates out of their spots and ultimately allows opponents to touch the paint.

From there, they are either scoring, getting to the free throw line, or kicking out to shoot or initiate a swing-swing sequence. The Cavs start scrambling, and then it becomes a world of hurt.

“You can look at my postgame comments against Orlando, OK? Very, very similar,” Atkinson said. “I think it’s a very similar game. Much more generous on the defensive end. And I just told guys, it starts with that first unit. Not very good defensively. They never felt us out. They got comfortable. They got confidence, and then, it’s the same kind of story, right? We’ve got really good defenders in that lineup, so an unforgivable defensive effort today.

“Give credit to Dallas. I just thought their energy level was higher. But, when your energy level isn’t there — sometimes you have games where it’s not there — now you have to use your kind of savvy and experience and be in the right position. You might not have a game where you’re super active, and that happens, but there were a lot of mental breakdowns.”

In addition to praising Max Strus for a great comeback effort and start to the season, Atkinson used his entire press conference to discuss the defense.

He himself also reflected on whether Cleveland should have switched groups from 1-to-5 as a challenge to prepare for the playoffs, because “we don’t normally do that.” But describing this effort as passable feels like a real red flag at the end of the season.

“We showed four or five clips where we’re not touching them,” Atkinson told ClutchPoints in the press room. “In a switching defense, you have to control the screener. You have to slow down the screener, right? You have to stay on the ball. We’re playing man-to-man, but it was like, we were in a zone because we were so different. And in the NBA, if teams are so comfortable, the shots are easier. They’re not worn out physically, so they’re fresher to make shots.”

Take care of basketball matters too.

“I’ll just say the last thing I knew the focus wasn’t there [there]I think we had 12 live-ball turnovers,” Atkinson said. “Some of those were differentials. Some of those were the lineup. Maybe I threw some in there by not shooting enough, so that was a big part of it too.

“Live-ball turnovers are death. I hope this doesn’t sound too harsh, but they are. If you have a live-ball turnover above the free-throw line, it’s probably going to be a layup. You can’t prevent it.”

Cavs have been banged up again, but depth needs to shine defensively

It should be noted that Sam Merrill has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, and Jaylon Tyson injured his ankle last Friday in Dallas. They are key pieces of the perimeter.

However, Ellis is known for his ball pressure and technique, and Dean Wade is a top defender with his versatility, so the Cavs should be outmatched very easily.

Mitchell and Harden have the right message, but they need to hold up their end of the bargain in this case too.

At times, Cleveland’s wings behave a little more loosely due to the frontcourt threats behind them. And although this defensive drop off over Allen’s absence from the lineup may be a bit much for one player, it undoubtedly underlines his importance to the team.

As the Cleveland Cavaliers have players like Max Strus returning from injury, the latest news from the team has revealed a key star who will miss time. While Cavs star Jarrett Allen is absent due to a knee injury, the team has sketched out a tentative timetable for his return.

With Allen already missing time due to a knee injury, his last game was played on March 3, where Cleveland won 113–109 over the Detroit Pistons. The veteran center played 21 minutes in that game, recording eight points on four-of-seven shooting from the field with three rebounds.

With the news of missing the upcoming three-game road trip, Allen will miss his eighth consecutive game. So far this season, Allen is averaging 15.3 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game on 63.6 shooting from the field in his ninth year in the association.

At any rate, it remains to be seen when Allen is ready to return as the upcoming road trip begins on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Bucks, with a hoped-for return when the Cavs return home to take on the Orlando Magic on Tuesday, March 24. Cleveland currently holds a record of 41–27, placing them in fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

While Cleveland Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen may not have won Cade Cunningham’s NBA Player of the Month award for the Eastern Conference in February, his incredible 11-game performance cannot be ignored. He averaged 22.3 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 blocks in less than 30 minutes per contest for the Cavs, with a 74.0% field goal percentage.

This led the entire NBA, and, as Eric Slater of ClutchPoints wrote, he was the only player in the league to average 20 and 10 on at least 50% shooting.

After the team’s last home game, a stunning 109–94 win over the New York Knicks a week earlier, Larry Nance Jr. drew attention to that dominance in Donovan Mitchell’s postgame interview. Before the real question came up, he asked the All-Star guard about the “God of Greats.”

As funny as that exchange was, the loud praise that Allen received in the locker-room was well-earned and appreciated.

Allen has been a strong player on the inside and his start to the month was described as a Hakeem Olajuwon-like performance against the Portland Trail Blazers. Allen scored a career-high 40 points with 17 boards, five assists and four blocks. It featured his face photoshopped onto the famous “100” photo of Wilt Chamberlain in celebration in the locker room.

This would ultimately be a precursor to what would come in February, which saw him record nine double-doubles in 11 opportunities. With Evan Mobley sidelined with a calf injury, Allen was playing well even before the Cavs rebuilt their roster with a franchise-altering trade for James Harden.

“He’s just caught this wave, this momentum. He’s playing out of his mind. I mean, both ends,” Atkinson said, noting his defensive rating of 84 against the Knicks. “He’s playing great basketball. Confidence. I think his usage increased a lot with Evan being out. I think it gave him confidence. He started taking some risks out there. And then, he always finishes in the paint, right? First in the league in field goal percentage last year. So he can do that.”

But since Harden adapted to alcohol and gold, the relationship has become just as natural. The 36-year-old’s pick and roll savvy, coupled with Allen’s timing and footwork, are a match made in heaven.

“Being out there, JA, I can say he’s a lot better than I thought he was in terms of being able to catch the ball, being able to finish around the rim with both hands,” Harden said. “He has a lot of touch around the rim, and I think that’s probably one of the most underrated parts of his game. So just trying to find ways to get him the ball and in positions where he can be successful, and the same thing with Eve and all of our big guys…

“… Just defensively, how active he is offensively, how he understands, when to roll to the basket, when to roll short, when to find the pocket, screening angles, different things like that. And he’s so athletic; he gets into a roll. It’s getting off screens or setting screens quicker, that’s something I’ve had to get used to. No disrespect to different players. [Ivica] Zubac is also really good in his own way, but Jarrett is like a speed roller, so I’m really going to have to get used to finding that speed.

Allen acknowledged that Harden’s arrival has only reinforced the positive play that has continued over the past month and a half.

“Just his patience,” Allen said. “He won’t force any shots. He won’t force any lobs all the time. He won’t try to force hero plays. He’ll try to pick apart the other team, just try to read their defense and try to make the right play.”

Mitchell said of Allen’s mentality with Harden, “Just aggressive, aggressive, vocal on both ends of the floor.” “He’s in the pick and roll. He’s on the boards. He’s getting the ball in the paint. Sometimes we feel like he’s surrounded by four guys and he’s still getting out there, finishing through contact. This is the most aggressive I’ve ever seen him. And that was before James. And now, you add James, and it’s like a whole ‘nother layer. He’s really being vocal, and we need that.”

It also helps his recovery from two separate, painful finger injuries suffered early in the season.

“I mean, he was really dealing with broken fingers,” Atkinson said. “He tried to play through it. And then, we made him sit out for a few weeks, right, and we paid for it [in the] Win-loss column, but we had to get it right. I think he is healthy, [it’s] That’s definitely a part of it.”

And yet, none of these reasons are the primary reason he plays with an edge every night.

“Kenny challenged me,” Allen said. “Evan was out, Evan hurt his shin, he told me, came to me and said, ‘You’ve got to pick it up. You’ve got to make up for the loss of rim protection, the loss of offensive ability.’ And I took it to heart. I went out there and honestly just started having fun and not really caring about the mistakes I was going to make, and just started playing freely, and it’s working out for me.

“I always try to say I’m the perfect soldier. You tell me to do something, I’m blindly going to do it, whether I believe it or not. And it’s working.”

Mitchell raised his head and gazed at Allen with open ears in his last interview after the game.

“Hopefully, we’ll keep it going until March, right?”

Cunningham and the Pistons are in town for a rematch of a classic, wild overtime game between the two just four days ago.

Expectations are now set for Allen even with Mobley back, which means the Cavs will have to continue to find The Fro at lower levels.

The marquee matchup between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Milwaukee Bucks ended in thrilling fashion. The Bucks won 118–116 in the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo, as seven Milwaukee players scored in double figures, led by Kevin Porter Jr., who finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

However, the Cavs’ Jarrett Allen came incredibly close to tying the game with a late layup that was contested by two players. However, the ball was released too late and the Bucks got the win. The Cavs were without both Donovan Mitchell and James Harden heading into the game battling injuries.

Allen had a positive game, top-scoring with 27 points and also grabbing 11 boards. It was the fifth consecutive game in which Allen finished with a double-double, and his 9th in 10 games since his spectacular 40-point performance against the Portland Trail Blazers earlier in the month.

He was accompanied by Dennis Schröder, who was the second-highest scorer that night with 26 points and five assists. The Cavs also saw Keon Ellis come off the bench to score 14 points, while Thomas Bryant added 11 points.

However, Milwaukee was the better shooting team on the night, producing an impressive 54.5% accuracy from the field and 42.2% accuracy from beyond the arc. AJ Green and Kyle Kuzma both converted five of their 10 three-point attempts, with Myles Turner also going 3-5 from three-point field.

The Bucks moved to 26-31 for the season and will now face the New York Knicks. Meanwhile, the Cavs will visit the Detroit Pistons and move into fourth place in the Eastern Conference with a 37-23 record, now trailing the Knicks by one game.

Bucks continue to punch up weight class amid Giannis injury

This is the Bucks second night of a back-to-back, which wasn’t too obvious considering how high Porter jumped over Allen for that poster. Last night, Milwaukee swept the Miami Heat, using an 11-0 run at the end of the game to blow away the Eastern Conference team that is currently eighth in the standings.

Now, the Bucks are currently facing off with the Cavs, which is a testament to their resiliency and excellent conditioning levels. At the time of writing, the game is tied, and anything can still happen in the final few minutes.

The Cleveland Cavaliers made a stir during trade season when they traded Darius Garland, an original member of the team’s core four, to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for James Harden. Harden is playing much more spectacularly than Garland this season, and he’s healthy, too. But an underappreciated part of bringing Harden in as a more consistent member of the starting lineup was unlocking the best from Jarrett Allen.

For almost his entire career, Harden has made life much better for his pick-and-roll partners. Clint Capela played his best basketball with Harden. Ivica Zubac did the same. And now, Allen is following suit. If there’s one thing Harden has going for him, it’s that his track record of excellence in the regular season is nearly unmatched. He is a regular season winning machine, and the Cavs have been humming since they brought him in via trade.

Harden reduced the burden on offense on Donovan Mitchell. He should make life easier for Alan and Evan Mobley in terms of getting good looks. And he reduced the need for Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson to rely on more inconsistent players to try to partner with Mitchell in the backcourt.
