With NASCAR’s silly season just a few months away, Kyle Busch’s future is the biggest uncertainty in the Cup Series right now. Now the uncertainty may be less.

Bob Pokrass of Fox Sports wrote that if Busch were to leave RCR, which he is still reluctant to do, joining Spire Motorsports is the “most logical” destination for the future Hall of Famer.

Suárez, who many believed was struggling to save his Cup career entering 2026, has the highest average starting position (12.92) and average finishing position (15.00) in his Cup Series career. He currently sits 14th in the points, one spot off the lead in The Chase while Busch is 24th.

Who could replace Kyle Busch at Spire Motorsports?

Entering 2026, the most likely scenario appears to be that Daniel Suarez does not live up to expectations in his first season with Spire Motorsports and is replaced by Kyle Busch in the No. 7 car. Circumstances may have changed that.

However, Michael McDowell has been Spire’s worst performing driver this season. Despite finishing second at Watkins Glen, McDowell is 21st in points and trails Suarez in average starting position (17.78), average finishing position (19.92), and points (225, 21st).

In Friday’s contest against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Kyle Schwarber did something that had only been done once before in Philadelphia Phillies history. The slugger equaled the record set by Cy Williams in 1923 by homering 20 times in the Phils’ first 45 games of the season. He has also hit nine home runs in his last eight games. Schwarber is on pace for a ridiculous 72 home runs.

Age remains a concern for Schwarber, as the former outfielder transitions to full-time designated hitter duties after the 2023 season. But his power has only improved since then, hitting a career-high 56 homers in 2025. He is the definition of a true triple output player, someone who primarily walks, strikes out, or hits home runs. Many are questioning whether his power can continue as he ages, so how has Schwarber maintained his ability to throw for power?

History as a slugger

None of this is new to Schwarber, although it has certainly reached a new level recently. He has always been a power hitter. Since 2017, Schwarber posted only one season with fewer than 30 homers (2018), not including the COVID-shortened 2020 season. This is a level of consistent slugging that is simply head and shoulders above everyone else in the game. And it’s that consistency that has established Schwarber as one of the best in baseball.

The slugger has spent time with four clubs in his career, but most of his service time was split between the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia. Interestingly, Schwarber has gotten better with age. His time with the Cubs was early in his career, where he hit 121 homers. But during his most recent stint with Philly, the hitter has 207 dingers. In a league where age almost always means getting worse, Schwarber has managed to turn it around.

They say wine gets better with age, but so does Kyle Schwarber. In the first seven seasons of his career, he never reached the 40-homer mark. But in the four seasons that followed, Schwarber has surpassed 40 home runs three times. The only time he failed to reach there was in 2024, when he scored 38 runs. And even though he surpassed his career high in points last season with 56, it looks like Schwarber is even better in 2026.

His 165 wRC+ is an all-time high compared to last year’s 152. ISO is a statistic that measures pure power hitting, which is calculated by subtracting batting average from the slugging percentage. Schwarber has a ridiculous .384 ISO mark. That production at the plate has equated to 1.5 WAR for the slugger in just 45 games. This puts him on pace for 5.4 WAR on the season. for a player who Only Contributes with his bat, that’s huge numbers.

Statcast has some graphs of Schwarber’s plate production that help explain his profile as a player with three true results. The first two (seen below) show his hot zone as a power hitter, with the red color on the image indicating the part where his home runs are hit.

As you would expect, these zones are fairly similar, with the middle of the zone being the primary spot where Schwarber makes quality contact. An interesting metric is the top right part of each figure. These are pitches that are high and inside, given that Schwarber is a left-hander. He’s doing a tremendous amount of damage on those pitches, with 1,500 ISO and 2,000 SLG. His strikeout rate in that area is also attractive (pictured below left). He has not yet hit a pitch in that area of ​​the zone, demonstrating a distinct ability to wait for that pitch and do damage.

Even more shocking are his on-base percentage stats. The four quadrants outside the zone are a helpful way to measure plate discipline and movement. Schwarber has a combined .559 OBP on pitches out of the zone, which means he’s walking in a ridiculous fashion. He is tied for 11th in MLB with 30 walks, giving him a 14.7 percent walk rate.

Schwarber is an anomaly in that regard. Before him, most sluggers known to get better after age 30 were steroid users. The year Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs, a record that has yet to be broken, he had a .863 SLG and a .535 ISO. Schwarber isn’t nearly as good, but is doing something similar without the help of performance-enhancing drugs.

The Phillies’ 2026 season

The year got off to a rough start for Philadelphia, who fired manager Rob Thomson after a 9–19 start. They have since improved to second place in the National League East with a 22–23 record under interim manager Don Mattingly. Much of that success was due to Schwarber’s bat. In baseball it is impossible for a player to carry a team. But it often feels like the team wouldn’t be where they are without Schwarber; he is He Precious.

If he can keep this up, he will establish himself as not only the greatest slugger in Philadelphia history, but one of the greatest in MLB history. While in Philly, he has averaged 47 home runs a season (2022–25). Given this, he is on pace to reach 574 home runs by the time his contract with the Phillies expires in 2030. Busch has now won 105 races without a Cup Series victory and is currently 24th in points, behind teammate Austin Dillon and slightly ahead of Erik Jones.

The issues resulted in RCR making another crew chief change for the No. 8 team with Jim Pohlman being replaced by Andy Street. It’s a move that appears to be paying off, with Busch finishing in the top-10 twice in the last three races, and would have made it three consecutive top-10s had he not gotten revenge against John Hunter Nemechek on the final lap at Texas.

Another reason Bush could re-sign with RCR. Hendrick, Joe Gibbs Racing, Team Penske and 23XI Racing don’t want him and clearly don’t see the 41-year-old as an upgrade from what they have. This potentially leaves a return to RCR as the best of Bush’s limited options.

Who can replace Kyle Busch at RCR?

While Richard Childress Racing would obviously like to bring Busch back to the No. 8 car for the 2027 season, they have options. If he decides to leave or his contract demands become too high, there are two names to keep in mind as replacements.

The most obvious RCR prospect is Jesse Love. In his age-21 season, Love is already a part-time driver for RCR in the No. 33 car and is poised to win the Xfinity Series this season.

Reigning Xfinity Series champion Love was previously looked at as an option for Legacy Motor Club in 2027 before their search focused on Riley Herbst. One reason for this could be the hope that Love is destined to occupy the number 8 car.

If RCR determines that Love is not quite ready for a full-time seat at the Cup Series level, the team could give Austin Hill a chance. He has proven to be far better racing in the lower levels than in the Cup, but he may be a short-term option until Love takes over.

Coming out of the wreck, the running order for Jack Link’s 500 was Ryan Preece, Chastain, Chris Buescher, Christopher Bell, Eric Jones, Michael McDowell, Todd Gilliland, Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., AJ Allmendinger, Cody Ware, Noah Gragson, Zane Smith and Austin Dillon, as recorded by The Athletic’s Jeff Gluck.

Kyle Busch made headlines before this weekend’s NASCAR race at Kansas Speedway by suggesting he could get paid for comments he made earlier in the week about Denny Hamlin. Since Busch’s on-track performance isn’t adding anything to the feud, he’s now working behind the microphone.

In a recent interview, Busch said that Hamlin played the role of the villainous driver who is winning too much. However, they are not talking much, leaving Hamlin to “run his mouth” and say he “might have to face him again here soon” and that Busch has been “washed up” as a driver.

“He has his own podcast and he’s been running his mouth lately so he might be here again soon… He’s been telling me I’m tired and can’t drive anymore.”

To set the record straight, Hamlin never said his former partner was washed up or could no longer drive. Instead, on last week’s episode of Actions Detrimental, the driver of the No. 11 car said Busch should “take it better” amid Richard Childress Racing’s ongoing struggles. Hamlin also said that anyone still holding out hope that Busch would regain his former glory as a consistent winner will be “very disappointed” because the 40-year-old “doesn’t know how to get speed out of a Next Gen car on a consistent basis.”

Hamlin, who has scored 12 Cup Series wins since his last trip to Victory Lane in Busch’s No. 8 car, also compared himself to Busch, saying he “can’t catch that guy’s helmet talent-wise”. Apparently, Bush didn’t hear that part of the segment. It’s also notable that when Busch was on the podcast last year, Hamlin credited him with developing his career.

Busch also revealed his “hate list” of fellow NASCAR drivers, which includes Carson Hocevar, Joey Logano, and Brad Keselowski. As with Hamlin, the only problem he may cause for them is when he’s going to lag, and probably not for the first time in that race.

NASCAR statistics support this. Over the last six races, Busch ranks 31st in average finishing position (25), which puts him well behind Hamlin (5.3, second), Keselowski (10.0, sixth), Hocevar (14.3, 13th) and even the struggling Logano (19.8, 21st).

Even in the last 15 races leading up to Talladega, Busch is 21st in average finishing position (20.6), while Hamlin is fifth (11.8), Keselowski is sixth (12.5), Logano is 12th (15.3), and even Hocevar (19.6) is slightly ahead of the future Hall of Famer. None of these drivers can really see Busch as a rival because he is not providing them any competition.

Busch’s frustration with RCR is obvious, but what has brought his struggles even more into the spotlight is that Dillon has been performing better than him this season. Both are forced to deal with RCR providing inadequate support, but the driver of the No. 3 car is handling it better and producing better results.

Notably, Hamlin did not respond to Busch’s weekend comments during Monday’s episode of Actions Detrimental. It will be interesting to see how things play out between the two drivers in the coming weeks, when Hamlin will inevitably tie Busch for a career Cup win and ultimately surpass him this season.

It’s also worth noting that teammate Austin Dillon has outperformed Busch this season, and the No. 3 car is the only one to drive a win for RCR in the last few years. So, while he almost certainly won’t be behind the wheel of the No. 8 car in 2027, Busch could end up joining a team where the results will be exactly the same. If this happens, the conversation may focus on whether or not it is time for them to retire.

Shanahan not thrilled about Australia opener

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear on Monday that he is not at all overreacting to the NFL’s decision to start the 2026 season in Australia.

“I don’t see any professionals,” he told reporters.

Now, to be clear, he’s coming at this from a coach’s perspective. And football players and coaches alike have often expressed approval for the exclusivity of international games and the opportunity they give them to experience new things, while also stating very clearly that it is not good in terms of the quality of the game. Shanahan echoed those widespread sentiments. He acknowledged that the game is “good for the league to play globally” and “wonderful” for international fans to get a taste of NFL action. Nevertheless, he still does not see any positive benefits for his team.

Veteran Philadelphia 76ers point guard Kyle Lowry may rarely see action in the 2025-26 NBA season, but on a special night on Wednesday, he was allowed to take the field against the Chicago Bulls at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.

He averaged 13.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists with splits of 49.2 percent shooting from the field, 36.5 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 72.4 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

Kyle Van Noy is a free agent at a position of need for the New England Patriots. Van Noy has spent the past two seasons playing at a high level with the Baltimore Ravens. However, the Patriots were the franchise with which Van Noy won two Super Bowls in 2017 and 2019. So, could there be a rematch between Van Noy and New England?

Van Noy joined NFL Network on Tuesday morning and talked about his free agency. The 34-year-old linebacker was asked about a possible return to the Patriots, and he expressed a strong desire to return to New England.

“It would be a blessing come true,” Van Noy said on NFL Network. “Going home will be like a dream come true…[New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel]Friend, what’s going on?”

Van Noy had 12.5 sacks for Baltimore during the 2024-25 NFL season, but he languished as a pass rusher last year. The Ravens linebacker earned only two sacks and one interception in 15 games. It was the fewest sacks Van Noy had in a season since being traded to the Patriots in 2016.

So far, New England has Draymont Jones, Robert Spillane and Christian Ellis at linebacker, but it has been linked to others at the position. Van Noy would be more of a depth option at linebacker rather than a big addition. Maybe a return to New England will revitalize the 34-year-old linebacker after a difficult season.

The 2026-27 season will likely be Van Noy’s last season in the NFL, as he said on NFL Network. It would be fitting if this were Van Noy’s final year in New England, trying for his third and final Super Bowl victory.

The Milwaukee Bucks have had an up and down season and sit at 26-35. The biggest story for the Bucks is what’s happening with Giannis Antetokounmpo. He was almost traded by the NBA trade deadline, but remained with Milwaukee for at least the remainder of the season. Now, the biggest story is that Doc Rivers decided to keep Kyle Kuzma on the bench as a coaching decision.

The Bucks were playing the Celtics, and Kuzma did not play due to a coaching decision. Doc Rivers said the goal for the overall lineup is to try different things to find a rhythm, but he did not directly address benching Kyle Kuzma.

Kuzma addressed The Athletic’s Eric Nehm and said that he did not know in advance that it was happening, but he took it seriously and trusted the coaching staff, especially Rivers, given their past success.

“You have to take it seriously,” Kuzma said. “At the end of the day, we trust our coaching staff to make the right decisions on this team or whatever they think can win us games, especially for a guy like Doc. You know, he’s in the top 5 all-time in wins, so he knows basketball.”

Kuzma’s benching did not affect the outcome of the game, as the Celtics defeated the Bucks 108–81, despite Giannis Antetokounmpo returning from injury.

The former Laker was traded from the Washington Wizards to the Bucks midway through the 2024–25 season. In his first full year with the Bucks, the 2020 NBA champion averaged 12.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per contest, while shooting 48.3% from the field and 34.2% from three-point range in 56 games.

The Bucks are currently the 11th seed in the Eastern Conference and face an uphill battle to make the postseason, even a play-in game. They have also lost four games in a row and don’t look like they are a playoff-caliber team.

It’s been a tough journey for Kuzma, and if he’s still part of the Bucks’ plans moving forward, he still has another season left on his current contract beyond 2025-26. The $20.3 million Kuzma is owed in 2026-27 is also nearly fully guaranteed.

ESPN NBA insider Tim McMahon publicly criticized Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert on Wednesday, accusing the four-time Defensive Player of the Year of “crying” about offensive touches following recent comments involving teammate Kyle Anderson.

Speaking on ESPN’s NBA Today, McMahon addressed Gobert’s comments and suggested the veteran center should focus on the role he has played in helping Minnesota find success this season.

McMahon’s comments came shortly after Gobert spoke about Anderson, who recently returned to the Timberwolves after signing with the team last week following a buyout from the Memphis Grizzlies.
