Laval Rocket season on the line vs. Toronto Marlies

While the Montreal Canadiens attempt to even up their second-round series against the Buffalo Sabres, their AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket, have been pushed to the brink in the AHL playoffs.

As things stand, Laval is tied 2-2 in their series against the Toronto Marlies, and considering this is the second round of the Calder Cup playoffs, it’s a best-of-five situation. In other words, Game 5, scheduled for 3 pm ET on Saturday, will decide the winner of the series.

It’s a less-than-ideal scenario for the Rockets, a team that has endured spectacular adversity in a season that has seen many of its best players make their way to Montreal.

Luckily for Laval, defenseman Adam Engstrom was recently returned to the AHL, but the fact remains that they are playing without their starting goaltender Jacob Fowler, who is currently serving as Jacob Dobbs’ backup in the NHL.

Even when we take into account the losses of players like Engstrom, David Rickenbacker, Jared Davidson, Florian Czekaj, Joshua Roy and Owen Beck at various stretches of the NHL, it’s worth noting that Laval has managed to overcome long stretches of tough spots to capture the North Division title, which means they’ll have home-ice advantage in Game 5 on Saturday, a significant advantage given the NHL-like environment for the Rockets. Fans form at the Place Bell on any game day.

This is extremely important in this particular case, as the Rockets are facing a can’t-lose situation against the Marlies in what can only be described as a physical series.

If the Rockets lose, their encouraging season will be quickly forgotten, and labeled another failed playoff push.

If they win, as expected, they will advance to the next round, but they will receive little praise from analysts and fans. More than anything, this would be described as loss aversion.

It’s not an easy scenario to face, but it’s one filled with adversity, a recurring theme in both Montreal and Laval.

And like the Habs, the Rockets perform best with their backs against the wall.

Montreal Canadiens News and Notes

  • Elliotte Friedman officiated in the first round series between the Habs and Lightning. Or more precisely, they immediately discussed a penalty, which at first seemed imaginary, but was actually a legitimate penalty on Oliver Kapanen. In this particular case, I would argue the point was that the referee’s hand did not go up until Dominic James oversold the contact moments later. Either way, the Canadians cannot focus on umpiring in this series, as it is a factor they cannot easily control.
  • Even though the results on the ice at 5v5 have been less than ideal, Lane Hutson has done a great job when tasked with defending star players 1v1.
  • Lost in the shuffle over the weekend, the Canadiens re-assigned defenseman David Rickenbacker to the Laval Rocket (AHL). The Rockets’ playoff push begins on Wednesday, with a series against the Toronto Marlies on the menu.
  • Members of the organization who met with the media on Monday included Alexandre Texier, Alex Newhook and head coach Martin St-Louis.
  • The Habs are now one game away from advancing to the second round of the NHL playoffs. Veteran Brendan Gallagher was again included in the lineup, and he made an immediate impact by scoring the opening goal of the game. Kirby Dach and Alexandre Texier provided the other goals in a vital 3–2 win. [Canadiens Highlights: Gallagher Leads Way In Huge Win]
  • Rookie netminder Jacob Dobbs was great, stopping 38 of 40 shots sent his way, including nearly 10 high-danger saves.
  • Defensive defenseman Lane Hutson had another outstanding game. It should also be noted that he has maintained his ridiculous production rate in the playoffs. The phenom has registered his name on the scoresheet 10 times in 10 games of his career.
  • While the Canadiens were taking a series lead against the Lightning, the Laval Rocket were busy doing the same in the AHL. Laval beat the Toronto Marlies 3-1 on Wednesday to take a 1-0 series lead. Florian Czekaj, Joshua Roy and Samuel Blais scored for the Rockets, while Kaapo Kakkonen made 20 saves to ensure the win.
  • The entertainment factor is through the roof when it comes to this Lightning Fan Crash.
  • That’s not the case anymore, but there was a time when some doubted whether Lane Hutson’s impressive production would translate to the NCAAs. And then he questioned whether he could do it in the World Championship. And World Juniors. In the nhl. And finally, the playoffs. At this (very early) point in his career, there is little left to prove.
  • Sniper Cole Caulfield is one of the finalists for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually to the player in the league who displays the best type of sportsmanship throughout the season. In 81 games played, Caufield accumulated only 14 penalty minutes. [Caufield Among Finalists For Lady Byng Memorial Trophy]
  • The French call of Alexandre Texier’s game-winning goal is absolutely brilliant.
  • Veteran Brendan Gallagher had his mother on his mind when re-inserting him into the lineup on Wednesday. Considering how much he has sacrificed for the franchise, it was a fitting start to their playoff run from the perennially underappreciated forward.
  • Unfortunately for the organization, the Laval Rocket also dropped their playoff game, losing 6–2 to the Toronto Marlies. Laval actually established a 2–0 lead midway through the first period, but the Marlies’ four powerplay goals were too much to handle. [AHL]
  • One of the main reasons the Canadiens have been able to keep up with the Lightning is because of the play on the team’s third line. Or is this his fourth line? Either way, Alexandre Texier, Kirby Dach and Zachary Bolduc are scoring at a first-line pace. [Caufield Among Finalists For Lady Byng Memorial Trophy]
  • Caufield, one of the players who has struggled at 5v5, was quick to send his praise.
  • As for Bolduc, he is one of several young players in the province who were inspired by the experienced Brendan Gallagher.
  • Gallagher is appreciative of the support he has received since returning to the lineup.
  • With all due respect to Henrik Lundqvist, the game clearly lacks respect for Jacob Dobbs. Sure, he’s a rookie, but you could argue he’s done just as good a job as the veteran Andrei Vasilevskiy.
  • big bill It truly epitomizes what it means to be a member of the Montreal Canadiens.
  • Noah Dobson skated on Friday, and by all accounts, it looks like he’s as close as possible to returning to the lineup. There were also some whispers that he was almost cleared to play in Game 6.
  • Juraj Slafkowski decided to take a shot at Max Crozier, who was taken out of the lineup for Game 6.

Hayes Voted Best Prospect, Pickford Excellence, Laval

Montreal Canadiens News and Notes

He landed the top spot in our annual Montreal Canadiens prospect rankings, voted on by Habs fans. Dynamic forward Michael Hayes earned the No. 1 spot because of his elite skill set, not to mention he has already established himself as one of the top players in the NCAA. It remains to be seen how long he’ll stay in the NCAA, and whether the Habs will want him to spend some time in the AHL before graduating to the NHL, but there’s no doubt that Hayes represents Montreal’s best hopes of drafting an elite player from their current prospect pool. [Canadiens Top 20 Prospects – No. 1 Dynamic Michael Hage]

Our analyst Ronnie Hermo took a deep dive into the data prepared by Samuel Montembeault, Jacob Dobbs and Jacob Fowler and the results may surprise you! Well, sensationalism aside, Ronnie always does a great job, and in this case, he has shed some important light on the current situation. While Dobbs has managed to win more games, the statistics show that Montembeault has also played relatively well. [Canadiens Analysis: – Which Goalie Should Start Down The Final Stretch Of The Season]

The Canadiens are reportedly interested in trading for Robert Thomas, but the cost would be too high. This makes sense, because Thomas is at his statistical peak, and you rarely see a player of his talent become available for trade. According to the report, the trade package would also include top Canadiens prospect Hayes, among others.

Laval rocket is doing its job properly. In addition to being the center of entertainment in Laval, they are set to honor firefighters with new jerseys over the weekend. They will then auction off the jerseys and the proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. This is a great initiative that clearly deserves our support. On that note, even if they aren’t supporting any important charities, I would still suggest going to see Rocket, as it offers the best bang for your buck when it comes to the entertainment budget. In particular, families benefit from the reasonable costs, great ambiance and great facilities at Place Bell.

Adam Nicholls continues to be one of the most important members of the Canadiens organization, helping young players become confident NHLers.

Besides, he also has a very good shot!

ICYMI: Netminder Jacob Fowler took the No. 2 spot in our Canadiens prospect rankings. All things considered, he has shown that he can be a dominant presence in every league from the USHL to the NHL, but we should be wary of thrusting him into the NHL spotlight too quickly. He still needs to absorb as much experience as possible in the AHL before the pressure of becoming Montreal’s starter comes. [Canadiens Top 20 Prospects – No. 2 Stoic Fowler]

It’s officially silly season! Habs-related rumors have been increasing, with one of the most recent reports linking the Calgary Flames to defenseman Arbor Zekaj. [Canadiens Rumours: Calgary Reportedly Interested in Xhekaj]

Patrik Laine’s name also came up on Tuesday. Apparently, the Los Angeles Kings have renewed interest in the power play specialist. [Canadiens Linked To Kings In Laine Trade Rumour]

While the Flames have shown interest in Zekaj, the Habs continue to kick the tires on Flames forward Nazem Kadri. [Evaluating Canadiens Rumour Linking Kadri To Montreal]

With the March 6 NHL trade deadline looming, we take a look at the most pressing needs of Kent Hughes and company. While many want the Habs to acquire a forward, the defensive situation is far more worrisome. Montreal scored a lot of goals, but struggled to keep the puck out of their own net. [Top 5 Canadiens Needs Heading Into Trade Deadline]

There were 12 goals scored in Tuesday night’s game between the Habs and Sharks! Watch highlights of the goal bonus in California that resulted in a 7-5 win for the Sharks [Canadiens Highlights: Goal Bonanza In San Jose]

One of the Canadiens’ top prospects, Bryce Pickford, refuses to stop scoring goals at will in the WHL. Pickford was voted as the No. 7 player in our annual Top 20 Habs prospects rankings. [Canadiens Top 20 Rankings – No. 7 The Extraordinary Bryce Pickford]

As always, phenom Lane Hutson has his eyes on the prize.

Given that the Habs have been linked to St. Louis Blues forward Robert Thomas, we decided to take a deeper look at his potential fit in the lineup as well as the estimated cost of his acquisition. [Evaluating The Trade Rumour Linking Thomas To The Canadiens]

Pierre LeBrun suggested the Canadiens might want to consider a goalie like Jordan Binnington. Honestly, I can’t see the Habs trading for a veteran netminder who has a worse save percentage than Samuel Montembeault. He also mentioned that the Habs are keeping an eye on Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri as well as New York Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck.

Speaking of goalie rumors that make no sense, Elliotte Friedman essentially shot down the idea that the Canadiens should take a serious look at Florida Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky.

Jimmy Murphy thinks the Habs could take a shot at AJ Greer or Brandon Duhaime. They are good depth options, but I would argue that bottom-six depth is not among Montreal’s most pressing needs as the trade deadline approaches. [Top 5 Canadiens Needs Ahead Of Trade Deadline]

This is not a rerun! Defenseman Bryce Pickford once again scored his 39th goal of the year. As a reminder, he was forced to miss some games due to injury. Wednesday night was his 49th game of the season. [Canadiens Top 20 Rankings – No. 7 The Extraordinary Bryce Pickford]

Pickford’s work was not completed there. He scored his 40th (!) goal of the year early in the second period.

He completed a hat trick, his third of the season, leading the Tigers to a 6–3 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Pierre LeBrun thinks the Canadiens have inquired about New York Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck ahead of the NHL trade deadline. Take a look at what Trocheck could bring to the Habs. [Trocheck Linked To Canadiens In Latest NHL Trade Deadline Talk]

Some insiders have suggested the Canadiens could pull the trigger on a deal that includes a goaltender, but the numbers suggest that veteran netminders like Sergei Bobrovsky and Jordan Binnington would be terrific trade targets. [Canadiens Trade Talk: Evaluating Potential Goaltender Targets]

ICYMI: Given that the Habs have been linked to St. Louis Blues forward Robert Thomas, we decided to take a deeper look at his potential fit in the lineup as well as the estimated cost of the acquisition. [Evaluating The Trade Rumour Linking Thomas To The Canadiens]

Juraj Slafkowski was returned to the first line in practice on Thursday, while Alex Newhook was moved to the second line, and Kirby Dach was moved to the third line. Mike Matheson was absent from practice, which led to a change in configuration between the defensive pairings.

The Canadians stuck to the deadline, but not for lack of effort. According to Kent Hughes, there was one particular trade that went to the wire, but ultimately failed. He also mentioned that a deal is still a possibility, pointing to potential “significant trade” in the summer. [Hughes Discusses Potential Significant Trade, Canadiens Deadline]

Speaking about trades, Hughes suggested that the Habs were sometimes included on the no-trade clause list, but this was mostly due to the previous ruling, and would not have any impact on any deals.

Watch all 41(!) goals of impressive Habs prospect Bryce Pickford. The talented defenseman was selected No. 7 in our annual prospect rankings. [Canadiens Top 20 Prospects: No.7 – Extraordinary Pickford]

Unfortunately, the highlight reel posted above is already out of date, as Pickford scored his 42nd goal of the year, helping the Medicine Hat Tigers defeat the Red Deer Rebels 7-3.

The star players made their mark, but it was not enough, as the Canadiens defeated the Ducks 6–5 in the shootout. There are so many highlights! [Habs Highlights: Star Players Salvage Point In Anaheim]

Jacob Fowler returned to play and immediately made an impact for the Laval Rocket, stopping 35 of 37 shots to secure a 4–2 victory for Montreal’s farm team. Fowler was the game’s first star, while Joshua Roy (16), Owen Beck (9), David Rickenbacker (5) and Florian Czekaj (11) scored for Laval.

Jacob Dobbs was solid, keeping the Canadiens on the first line in the game long enough to snatch a win from the jaws of defeat against the Los Angeles Kings. There’s no doubt, Montreal is a better team when Juraj Slafkowski, Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield play together. [Habs Highlights: First Line Dominance Saves Canadiens]

Trade Talk, Fowler’s impressive results, Laval

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed on Friday.

montreal canadiens news

With the NHL trade deadline a week away, we’ll be taking a look at many of the rumors regarding the Canadiens soon, but for now, we can discuss one of the most recent talking points. Elliotte Friedman linked the Habs to Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, however, it is important to note that he did not suggest this was a solid report. Friedman made it clear that a player like Ristolainen could be of interest to the Habs, but that’s about it.

“Canadians, I think they’ve seen some of these D’s,” Friedman said on his latest edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast. “People like Ristolainen, or, people like him.”

He is a big, right-handed defenseman, the type of player that will interest most NHL teams, however, he also has a $5.1 million cap hit that runs through 2026-27. Given his recent decline in underlying numbers, not to mention the fact that he’s on the wrong side of 30, I have a hard time believing the Habs are interested in paying a high price for a player like him.

With only two players left to appear in our annual Top 20 Montreal Canadiens prospect rankings, we’ve reached one of the most important young players in the system: netminder Jacob Fowler.

Craig Button suggested the Canadiens should trade for Sergei Bobrovsky, a goaltender who comes with a $10 million cap hit, and currently has the same save percentage as Samuel Montembeault (.874). With all due respect to Craig, this is a questionable suggestion that will not improve the team while forcing them to move assets to absorb his expensive contract. At best, this is a lateral move.

The Laval Rocket are finding ways to win despite missing half their roster. OK, that’s an exaggeration, but when they faced the Rochester Americans they were without Adam Engstrom, Jacob Fowler, Florian Czekaj and Laurent Dauphin, among others. Toby Bisson (3), Joshua Roy (14), Vincent Arseneau (5), Samuel Blais (5,6), Alex Belzile (25), Philippe Messer (7), Owen Beck (7), and Will Dineen found the back of the net for the Rockets as Laval emerged victorious 9–3.

Shocking or not, Michael Hayes improved his season numbers on Friday night. The dynamic prospect now has 13 goals and 33 assists in just 34 games. For context, Hayes scored 13 goals and 21 assists in 33 games during his rookie season with the University of Michigan.

ICYMI: Rounding out the top 3 of our Montreal Canadiens prospect rankings is talented winger Alexander Zarovsky, who is enjoying a great rookie season in the KHL. He is a dynamic presence in the offensive zone, and the fact that he is performing in a professional hockey league at such a young age is worthy of praise. Is general manager Tom Fitzgerald still considering a Steven Stamkos, New Jersey Devils trade? Earlier in 2025–26, it was reported that the Devils were considering the two-time Stanley Cup champion as a trade target amid the struggles in Nashville. However, due to the emergence of Stamkos after early season struggles, the Predators have turned things around. [New Jersey Devils]

Brett Kulak was a perfect fit. In his first game with the Avalanche, a day after being traded from the Pittsburgh Penguins, Kulak quietly had a solid defensive night for the Avs. More importantly, he looked to play well with Sam Malinsky on the third pairing, while also linking up with Josh Manson, among others. [Colorado Avalanche]

Before he got the chance to skate with the Pittsburgh Penguins in training camp, winger Justin Brazeau was used to hearing from coach Dan Muse. It wasn’t all that much, just a conversation between a player looking to make a jump in his career and a rookie NHL head coach. [San Jose Sharks]

Slafkovsky Supremacy, Suzuki Chance, Laval

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed on Saturday.

montreal canadiens news

There is no doubt, Juraj Slafkowski is a major presence at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. He scored a goal and an assist in Slovakia’s 5-3 loss against Sweden on Saturday morning, and is currently ahead of Canadian forward Connor McDavid in points among all hockey players. [Canadiens Star Slafkovsky Leads Olympic Scoring]

Oliver Kapanen was drafted in for the Finland vs. Italy game, but was stapled to the bench during the one-off match, which resulted in an 11–0 win for Finland.

Nick Suzuki has played offensively as well as defensively for Team Canada in the Olympics. For the most part, he will be relied upon to shut down opposing players, but we should not underestimate his offensive impact. As it is, he has created the fourth-most scoring chances among all Canadian skaters.

Montreal’s AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket, refused to lose. They are currently on a seven-game winning streak, including their 4-2 win over the Toronto Marlies on Saturday afternoon. Owen Beck scored his sixth goal of the year, while Joshua Roy scored his 13th. With 66 points in 49 games, Laval is currently fourth in the AHL standings.

Forward Kirby Dach has continued to put in time at Brossard during the Olympic break. We all know he has a long injury history, but it can’t be denied that he was looking good with Suzuki and Caufield before the three-week schedule hiatus.
