The future of LeBron James has been a topic that has dominated the NBA season. According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin in his latest report about the Lakers’ potential offseason plans and James’ future, he will be.

“If James wants to play a 24th season, he would be welcome in L.A. Pelinka announced before the start of this season that he would be fine if James retired with Laker, and sources told ESPN, that sentiment was meant to reflect a 2026 retirement or 2027 retirement if James intends to extend his career,” McMenamin said in his statement. He further added, “If James returns, his salary will be a major factor in determining what kind of team L.A. can build.”

James currently makes $52.6 million, which will come off the books for the Lakers in the summer. That leaves the Lakers with $51 million in cap space to spend building around Luka Doncic. Should he consider returning to Lex, a significant pay cut would be on the horizon.

McMenamin said, “Although he took the maximum $2.7 million salary cut on the last deal he signed with L.A. to help the franchise avoid second-apron penalties, if he were to take a dramatic pay cut to re-sign with the Lakers this summer, it would be a significant deviation from the way he has negotiated his entire career.”

In his record-setting 23rd season, James is averaging 22 points, 7.1 assists and 5.8 rebounds.

Donovan Mitchell, what’s next for the Cavaliers

Donovan Mitchell is right to remain focused on the current season. The Cavaliers traded Darius Garland to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for James Harden, increasing their chances of being a serious contender for the remainder of the season.

Heat’s 48-win resurgence boosts Chris Bosh’s confidence in title hopes after LeBron James

The Heat advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals that season and pushed the Toronto Raptors to seven games, but fell just short in a Conference Finals matchup against James and the Cavaliers. Bosh was sidelined for the postseason due to recurring blood clotting issues, a condition that ultimately ended his playing career.

I was like, ‘I should be here’ because usually the people who have the thing that I have, aren’t here anymore. I just took it to heart and moved on and got it out of my system and moved on.

Bosh’s career was short, championship confidence never wavered

Bosh averaged 21.1 points and seven rebounds during the 2014–15 season and 19.1 points and 7.4 rebounds in 2015–16 before his career was cut short. He was later inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.

While Miami never returned to the Finals during Bosh’s tenure following James’ departure, the franchise later reached the NBA Finals in 2020 and 2023 under a new core led by Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.

Looking back, Bosh said the Heat had the talent and confidence to compete for another championship – even without James – if circumstances had turned out differently.

Ahead of Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic’s sixth All-Star Game appearance, he talked about the longevity of his career, one month away from teammate LeBron James’ 41st birthday. As for Doncic, he can’t see himself in James’ shoes during the 26-year-old’s eighth NBA season.

In his 23rd season, James is still playing at an elite level, averaging 22.0 points on 50.2% shooting, 7.1 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game. While it’s hard to imagine LeBron retiring at the end of this season, at the very least, one more season will welcome a 24th season in 2026-27, when James turns 42.
