The San Francisco Giants’ rotation is another area of concern. Logan Webb was sent to the 15-day injured list Saturday afternoon due to bursitis in his right knee. The move is retroactive to Wednesday.
Webb sat out his most recent start on Tuesday due to knee soreness, throwing just four innings before exiting the game. He allowed six runs, raising his ERA to 5.06. This shows how disappointing 2026 has been so far for the right-handed batsman.
His metrics have been equally poor this performance, posting below-average marks in everything except his fastball run value (70th percentile). The run value of his offspeed pitches has declined drastically, from the 98th percentile in 2025 to 38th this year.
It’s not all bad. To be fair to Webb, some of it has been bad luck. His xERA is half a run lower than his actual ERA, with his 4.57 xERA compared to his 5.06 actual mark. But it doesn’t get much better for a pitcher who has long been viewed as one of the best in the National League.
The Giants have been struggling lately, and the loss of Webb doesn’t help matters any despite their recent difficulties. He should not be out for too long, recovery from knee bursitis usually takes 1-2 weeks. Hopefully, the stint on the IL will help Webb reset for the remainder of the season.
What replaces the web?
In the same move, Trevor McDonald was recalled from Triple-A. He has performed well in recent seasons and continues to have confidence in the Giants’ young players to step up this year. He was called up to start last week against the San Diego Padres and held the club to just one run on two hits in seven complete innings. He showed a lot of promise and dismissed seven batsmen in the beginning itself.
This player has performed brilliantly when called up to the big league level in the past. McDonald has a 1.44 ERA in 25 innings. But it’s been a completely different story in the minors. The right-hander has had an ERA over 5.00 in each of the last two seasons (5.31, 2025; 5.40, 2026). The lack of consistency has created a hesitation in the front office to trust McDonald’s production.
Regardless, he will get some opportunities to pitch until Webb returns. It’s possible he could displace one of the current pitchers in the rotation if he performs well enough. This may force someone else out when the web returns. That could be Adrian Houser or Tyler Mahle, both of whom have struggled bravely In his first season with San Francisco.
