Golden Knights’ Akira Schmid nominated for Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy

The Vegas Golden Knights have named goaltender Akira Schmid as their candidate for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

All NHL teams nominate a player for the award, which is presented each year to the player who best exemplifies tenacity, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

“Akira Schmid’s perseverance and dedication to hockey has paid off as he signs with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2025-26, plays his first full season in the NHL and starts for Switzerland at the Olympics,” the PHWA said. “Schmid spent most of the last four years improving his game in the Minors, and achieved career highs in terms of starts and wins in the NHL. In a season of inconsistency and injuries in the Vegas crease, Schmid has been consistent for the Golden Knights and is a big reason they are still in playoff position.

He is an excellent teammate and plays whatever role is asked of him, which often includes skating late with the shooters after practice, or entering games in the cold and playing lights out to steady the ship. “His humble, internally driven mentality is perfect for a role that is often underappreciated but has played a crucial role for the team.”

This season, the 25-year-old goaltender has started 34 games and posted a 16-10-6 record with a .893 save percentage and 2.59 goals-against average.

Since the return of Carter Hart, Schmid appears to be the third goaltender on the roster moving forward behind Adin Hill, with no clear path to a starting role unless an injury occurs.

The Golden Knights will play the Seattle Kraken on Thursday at 7:00 pm and will be looking for their fifth consecutive win under head coach John Tortorella.

Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin nominated for Masterton Trophy

For the second consecutive year, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has been nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. This certainly comes as no surprise if you’ve been following the team.

The Masterton Trophy is an annual award under the trusteeship of the Professional Hockey Writers Association. It is awarded “to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.”

The PHWA Washington Chapter released this statement:

“In Alex Ovechkin’s 21st season with the Capitals, and after breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record a season ago, he continues to play with the same passion and dedication he has given to the game since entering the league in 2005. At the age of 40, Ovechkin remains an integral part of the Capitals’ locker room. And on the ice, Ovechkin leads the team in goals and assists this season. Having again made history by hitting 1,000 career goals combined in the regular season and playoffs and tying Gordie Howe for the most 25-goal seasons in NHL history, he is undecided about his future next season, but has maintained a love of hockey that is infectious in the dressing room.

Despite turning 40 before the season, Ovechkin still made a major contribution on the ice. The Russian winger now has 61 points (31 goals, 30 assists) in 78 games, along with 928 career goals.

Ovechkin is in the final year of his contract and will make a decision about his future this summer. The 40-year-old talked about it in a recent interview with Capitals radio play-by-play announcer John Walton.

Devils’ Brendan Dillon nominated for Masterton Award

Ask anyone in and around the New Jersey Devils who their favorite person to chat with is, and most people will say Brendan Dillon.

He is a commanding presence off the ice and that is why so many people look to him as a leader.

As of Wednesday morning, the New Jersey chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association nominates a Devils defenseman for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is an annual award under the trusteeship of the Professional Hockey Writers Association and is given “to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.”

According to the United Views of the New Jersey chapter:

“After suffering a catastrophic neck injury in Game 1 of the 2025 playoffs that required artificial disc replacement surgery, Brendan Dillon relied on the advice of NHL and UFC athletes during a rigorous offseason recovery. He bounced back strong in 2025-26, and presented the Devils’ blue line with significantly improved defensive play while continuing to sacrifice his body for the well-being of his team. A true warrior, the 35-year-old The veteran reached his 1,000th NHL game on December 1, 2025. Dillon suffered a scary injury in that milestone, however, he came back for a shift in an unimaginable effort, and earned widespread respect from coaches and teammates for his tenacity – despite missing the third period as a precaution, Dillon is a vocal leader who holds teammates accountable, encouraging them. Stands up, and mentors younger players, inspiring the entire Devils locker room with his selfless commitment and dedication to the game.

On the ice, Dillon has been a mainstay partner for young Simon Nemec, who is completing his first year as an established NHLer, and where he has reached new heights.

Part of that success can be attributed to Dillon, who has been a steady presence next to Nemec on the ice, but also off the ice and in the locker room.

And he’s finally recovered from the summer, bouncing back from a season scare, and has been a consistent presence on the Devils blueline.

Voting on the 32 nominees for the Masterton Prize is now officially underway.
