The Atlanta Hawks are arguably one of the hottest teams in the league as they are on a nine-game winning streak, and they are trying to make it 10 games against the Orlando Magic. This trend began when C.J. McCollum was inserted into the starting lineup for Zachary Rishachar, as statistics showed that the Hawks were a better team when he played with the other four starters of Dyson Daniels, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Jalen Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu.

Those stats are still proving true, and it doesn’t look like McCollum will be going back to the bench any time soon. After his win against the Milwaukee Bucks, McCollum was asked if he would like to be the starter.

“For me, this is what the team needs,” McCullum told reporters. “I think the money comes on time every two weeks, regardless. That’s always helpful, but historically, I’ve been a starter, but I’m comfortable filling whatever role is necessary for us as long as we’re competing for something. That’s what’s really important to me: winning basketball and competing for something right now. That’s what they want me to do, and when your boss tells you something, you’ve got to do that.”

McCallum’s move into the starting lineup hasn’t affected the way the Hawks play, and if anything, it’s made them better. Jalen Johnson has been able to continue producing at a high level with McCollum in the lineup.

“Some of the lineups may look different, but CJ has been a great vet and he understands the game at a high level,” Johnson said. “So having him on the court with us, he just shows us little signs and things where we can be effective, and I think he’s done a great job leading our group.”

The Hawks needed a vet like McCallum on their team, as they were one of the younger teams in the league when the season began. McCollum has made big shots in postseason basketball and played with some of the game’s stars. His presence will only make the Hawks better, especially at this point in the season.

The Hawks are currently trying to climb the Eastern Conference standings, but despite their winning streak they haven’t made much of a splash. At this point, all they can do is control what they can and hope that the teams above them start falling away.

The Atlanta Hawks have seen different iterations of their team come and go this season, but they currently have this group they are used to down the stretch. With a mix of experienced and young players, the Hawks have the right ingredients to make the playoffs, and they are doing so, as evidenced by their current winning streak.

One player who has been a big help for the Hawks since January is CJ McCollum, and he seems to fit in well with what the team is trying to accomplish. Quin Snyder recently made the move to insert him into the starting lineup, as statistics show he is a much better team when he plays with Dyson Daniels, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Jalen Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu.

Players also see the difference McCullum makes when he is on the field.

“From an experience standpoint, we have CJs who are experienced, and the same thing with nickel, Okongwu said. “They’re leading us to better basketball, we’re having fun out there.”

“C.J. has been great for us,” Daniels said. “That vet presence, a guy who can make things happen. He’s a leader for us. A guy we can rely on, a guy who can get a bucket when we need to. It’s been really good to have him.”

When the Hawks needed a bucket, McCollum was there to make the save many times. This is what he has done throughout his career, and he is helping the Buckeye Hawks as they try to climb the Eastern Conference standings.

Snyder believes the Hawks have found something with McCollum and the other newcomers to the team.

“There was a period of about a week or two where those guys were really trying to figure it out,” Snyder said. “The thing that allows teams to come together is to bring yourself to the team and not be able to worry about a lot of numbers. I think those guys have really started to embrace that, and it makes the whole greater than the sum of the parts.”

The Hawks are clicking at the right time of the season, and if they take care of business, they could find themselves higher than the ninth seed by the end of the year.

ATLANTA – It was all about Trae Young when the Washington Wizards faced off against the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday. It was Young’s first time in Atlanta since being involved in the trade, and he was given a proper standing ovation throughout the night for everything he had done for the franchise over the past eight years.

Two days later, the Wizards faced the Hawks again, but this time, it was the two guys who were traded for Young: CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. Both played well in the rematch and helped the Hawks win 126–96.

After the game, both players spoke about their time with the Wizards, and each gave different expressions on how they felt about the experience.

Kispert was drafted by the Wizards with the 15th pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He had been with the team since then before being traded to the Hawks in January.

“I spent my entire career competing against these guys in practice,” Kispert told reporters after the game. “And doing it in a different uniform feels weird now, especially two days ago. Today felt a little more normal. I have incredible relationships with the guys on the other side. I felt like it was seeing old friends that I’ve missed since the trade.”

Kispert was able to see the growth and development of the guys who are still on the team, and it felt like a bittersweet moment for him to play against them and have a good game.

McCollum, on the other hand, was traded to the Wizards last offseason and only played with the team for a few months. Ironically, his best game as a Wizard was in November against the Hawks, when he scored 46 points. This is probably the only thing he remembers from that stint.

“It was just another game,” McCallum said. “I was there for 120 days, but it was a great time. I enjoyed my time there. The organization was great to me. The staff was great, the front office, the players, but I’ve moved on, and I think they’ve moved on too, and I wish them all the best, but just one more game that we needed to win.”

This was the second time in McCallum’s 13-year career that he was traded. Having once been president of the National Basketball Players Association, he knows the business of the game. The business probably felt like just another day at the office to him.

“I think this game means more than that [Corey]“He was there for a long time,” McCallum said. “For me, I had a cup of coffee and tea there. I had to figure out how to get to the facility without GPS, and then I got to work.”

As far as Kispert is concerned, this was the first trade of his career and there were some emotions associated with it.

“Saying goodbye to people you’ve had relationships with for four and a half years is really hard,” Kispert said. “In the blink of an eye, I’m in a new city and playing with a new team. I felt like I’d been drinking from a fire hose for a long time.”

It’s safe to say Kispert is more comfortable a month after the trade, and he had the best game of his career tonight against his former team, finishing with 33 points. The funny thing is that no one except Kispert knew that he was close to his career high during the game.

Kispert said, “I didn’t expect anyone to know, I wanted to keep it low-key. Knock on wood kind of thing.”

For both players, they leave a situation where the organization’s focus is on developing their youth, and it was going to be a bridge year for them. Now he is with a team that is competing based on its young players. McCallum and Kispert presented two sides of the same coin, and they may be satisfied with where they are now.

The Atlanta Hawks are still figuring out what exactly they are after reshaping their roster, but the early returns since acquiring CJ McCollum show that Quin Snyder’s developed offensive hierarchy is starting to yield results. The Jalen Johnson-led team has won two of its first three games following the NBA All-Star break and is on a relatively improving schedule. From February 23 to March 30, the Hawks play only five road games. Of the 14 domestic contests during that span, seven rivals are already focused on improving their NBA Draft Lottery odds.

Winning the Eastern Conference’s sixth seed and avoiding the NBA Play-In Tournament altogether after trading Trae Young is still a long shot. Still, a new starting lineup of Dyson Daniels, Nickell Alexander-Walker, CJ McCollum, Jalen Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu has provided offensive balance without sacrificing too much defense. McCollum is the only real goal-pointer, but the other four are doing a good job of protecting the rim and keeping opponents out of the paint. For example, the ninth-ranked Hawks (28-31) have shown improvement in points allowed in the paint over their last five games.

This shows that this team is still playing with pride and commitment to improvement. Given the schedule, the win is a must. Snyder really believes they can pull off some postseason upsets, especially if McCollum performs well in some key games.

“We’re in a little bit of a battle. We’ve played without a point guard this season, and we’ve played without a pure center this season. So the influx of a guy like C.J. who gives us another ball handler, another pick and roll player can be really valuable to everybody,” Snyder explained. “We’re going through the process of integrating those guys, and we’ll keep grinding.”

Although the offensive hierarchy is still a work in progress, Snyder is measuring success beyond the win column.

“I’m really more focused on how we’re playing, how we’re growing and how we’re coming together,” Snyder said. “We want to win every game, but to a certain extent. Whenever your team changes you have to face some difficult situations. Hopefully, we will play in such a way that we can repeat it and be successful.”

The Hawks, no longer employing Young, are operating without a single traditional floor general. Instead, Snyder has distributed playmaking duties throughout the roster, a change he described as born out of circumstance. What has emerged is a multi-lead approach to playmaking that distributes creation across the roster rather than routing everything through a single lead guard.

CJ McCollum helps Hawks

A 22-year-old Australian has been the most visible example of that development. Originally acquired for his defense, Dyson Daniels has become the primary ball handler due to circumstance and according to Snyder, he has embraced the challenge.

Snyder said, “Necessity can be the mother of invention.” “Dyson has really grown into that (point guard) role, which has been great to see him progress. He’s making plays for other guys, handling the ball and guarding that position. (Daniels) has really taken on that role for us and grown as a player.”

Johnson has been allowed to stick to what’s comfortable, with great success. Thankfully, the Hawks already have their own young face of the franchise, share a clear development plan, and now know how to best utilize future MVP-caliber talent.

“Jalen, again, is unique in his ability to pass and handle the ball, especially in the open court. (Johnson) isn’t in a position where we’re asking him to run the team, but there’s a lot of things we do where he’s the starter with the ball,” Snyder admitted. “We’ve put him in pick-and-rolls like any other player. That’s a big key for us. That versatility with multiple players and multiple playmakers is something we really value for us and we try to take advantage of that. Jalen is at the top of that list.”

The result is a crime without rigid hierarchy. Daniels organizes the attack, Johnson initiates the action from the frontcourt, and McCallum provides the scoring punch. Nichelle Alexander-Walker paints a picture of playmaking as an unconventional but effective contributor. Snyder has encouraged the 26-year-old guard to be more aggressive over the next few months.

“As far as playmaking, you know (Alexander-Walker) can get into the lane,” Snyder said. “He’s not your typical playmaker, but I think he’s unselfish and he’s willing to get off the ball when he’s blocked… We’ve tried to encourage him to be really aggressive in shooting. Even some contested shots from three.”

With McCollum adding another reliable pick-and-roll operator and an experienced scoring option from the wing, Snyder’s rotation is generating enough offense to remain competitive, even as the roster is holding its own. With a softer schedule ahead and a newly formed offensive identity, the Hawks are betting that need-driven invention leads to the NBA Playoffs. That test will show the front office what it takes to chase a top-four seed next season.

With the team needing a spark, Snyder selected 2024 No. 1 overall pick Zachary Rishachar over veteran guard C.J. McCollum. Rishacher showed promising signs as a rookie, but he has had a tough sophomore season as the pressure of being a former top pick began to mount.

In a similar vein, Snyder hinted at potentially making this change after Atlanta’s 31-point loss to the Miami Heat on Friday night via Hawks beat writer Kevin Chouinard.

“This is our best lineup by far, from a plus-minus standpoint,” Snyder said. “You could make the argument that we should start that lineup…how can we best utilize CJ?”

McCollum came to the Hawks in one of the most notable moves of the season when Atlanta sent star point guard Trae Young to the Washington Wizards. Some believed McCollum would be traded upon arriving in Atlanta, but he has been a quality contributor for the Hawks since the trade.

Before Sunday, McCollum had appeared in 18 games for the Hawks and was averaging 19 points a game even in 30 minutes of action per night. Now without Young on the team, Atlanta is in desperate need of the scoring punch provided by McCollum as they try to maintain their position in the play-in tournament.

On the other side of the coin, a move to the bench will hopefully take some pressure off Rishaer and allow him to start playing his best basketball like he was starting last season. If he can rediscover that form, Atlanta will be a scary team come the postseason.

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Hawks started the second half of the season with a road win, an environment they have been quite comfortable in this year. As of Friday, the Hawks were 17-15 on the road.

It’s home games where they lag (10-16 record), and that was the case in their 128-97 loss to the Miami Heat. The Hawks took a flat approach to start the game, while the Heat were clicking on both sides of the ball.

It was the second quarter where the Hawks came alive, and with a run started by Corey Kispert and CJ McCollum, they saw a 15-point deficit disappear.

“We played with better pace,” McCallum said. “We came out and ran. I think in the first quarter, we got our sea legs back and we didn’t come out and run. Didn’t get a chance to get stops.

“In the second quarter, we came out and ran. Corey got a dunk and a transition three. Got some rim pressure, got some kick out three eyes out. I think that was the difference.”

The Hawks trailed 57-51 at halftime and with little momentum. Unfortunately, they went back to their old habits and the Heat never looked back in the second half, taking a 34-point lead in the fourth quarter.

“They went into the zone to start the fourth quarter and I think that changed the game,” McCollum said. “They took advantage of some turnovers and missed shots. I don’t think we did enough to win. [Tyler] Hero got down. He’s got a lot more freedom, a lot more space in his pick and roll, and a lot more space in his pull-ups. I think a lot of guys hurt us tonight, and I think we didn’t deserve to win this game.”

The Heat had 72 points in the paint to the Hawks’ 38. They were defeated 58-46. Plus, they got 20 points off their turnovers. The only thing that went good for the Hawks in this game was that they shot 42% from the three-point line, but that was still not enough to win.

“I think when we follow the game plan, and we come out and execute the game plan, that’s when we play our best. I don’t think we did a good job of executing the game plan tonight,” Jalen Johnson said.

The Hawks were coming up by one, but they didn’t use it as an excuse for the loss.

“I would have liked to have gone to bed before 3 a.m. last night, but they beat us to it,” McCallum said. “It’s the same. They came out, they played better than us. They started well. They got points in transition, they got threes, they got rim pressure. Tonight they did what they wanted. So back-to-back or not, they did enough to win, and we didn’t do enough.”

The Hawks have four consecutive games to correct their mistakes for their home woes this season, and they are coming against opponents who haven’t had the best performances this year.

Johnson said, “The opportunities are in front of us. We just have to go out there and get it. We got another chance to regroup on Sunday, and tomorrow we got a chance to watch film and get better.”
