Mitch Madness! Marner hat trick gives Golden Knights 2-1 lead in the series

It took more than half a game for either team to score in Game 2 between the Vegas Golden Knights (1-1) and Anaheim Ducks (1-1). There were no such problems in Game 3, as the Golden Knights scored early and often, including a hat trick from Mitch Marner, to win Game 3, 6–2, and take a 2–1 series lead.

The Golden Knights scored on five-on-five, short-handed and power plays in the first period. It was his third, three-goal period of the playoffs. Just 1:06 into the game, Jack Eichel, stationed near the bottom left wall, delivered a perfect cross-ice pass to defenseman Shea Theodore (3), who beat Anaheim goalie Lucas Dostal from the crease. Anaheim forward Ryan Poehling appeared to screen Dostel and never saw the shot, which was Vegas’ first shot of the game.

The Golden Knights’ top playoff penalty kill unit continued their stellar play and scored their third short-handed goal of the postseason to give Vegas a 2-0 lead. Mitch Marner moved the puck into the Anaheim zone against a tired Anaheim group. Once over the blue line, he dropped the puck to oncoming Braden McNabb (1), who skated down the left wing and flicked a wrist shot from the faceoff dot inside the left circle that went under Dostal’s glove at 12:13 of the first.

Just as the Golden Knights scored early, they also scored late. On his first power play opportunity of the game, and with just 4.6 seconds remaining in the period, Marner (4) got a loose rebound that Dostal could not stop and stuffed it just inside the left post to give the Golden Knights a 3–0 lead. However, the news was not good for the Golden Knights in the first start, as they lost their captain Mark Stone to injury after only 4:24 of play.

It was a disappointing first period for Anaheim, as they had more shots (11 to 8), more power play chances (2 to 1), more hits (15–11), and eight fewer assists than the Golden Knights (11 to 3), yet found themselves in a 3–0 deficit. He also made a goal change to start the second period, pulling Dostal and calling on Ville Husso.

While Husso made some early saves, Marner and the Golden Knights quickly addressed that as well. A tic-tac-toe passing sequence between Brett Howden, Theodore and Marner followed, which ended with Marner (5) taking a stick tackle around Husso and slicing the puck inside the empty net on his backhand at 9:19 of the second to put the Golden Knights up 4–0.

Marner, who moved into the top line in Stone’s absence, continued his dominance and completed a natural hat trick at 17:56 of the second. The combination of William Carlson and Marner wore Anaheim down a lot. Karlsson won a puck battle below the goal line and got the puck to Marner, who then stepped out from behind the net and fired a harmless shot toward Husso that bounced under his right pad to increase the Golden Knights’ lead to five. The goal completed the first postseason career hat trick for Marner and also set a new career high for points in a playoff game with four.

Anaheim finally got a chance to get past Vegas netminder Carter Hart at 6:30 of the third. Alex Killorn took a poorly angled slap shot from just below the right circle that hit Hart under his right armpit and rolled into the net. Both of the Golden Knights’ defensemen struggled to clear the puck, but Anaheim rookie forward Beckett Seneca (3) dived on the loose puck and was able to knock it over the goal line to ruin Hart’s shutout bid and make the score 5–1.

Chris Kreider (2) pulled Anaheim to within three when he found himself alone in the crease with the puck on his stick and fired a shot past Hart’s glove at 15:09 of the third. The goal was Kreider’s 50th career playoff goal. However, that was as close as Anaheim got, with Howden (6) scoring into an empty net at 18:04 of the third minute to give the Golden Knights a 6–2 lead.

notes

  • The Golden Knights’ penalty kill has killed 27 of 28 penalties so far in the postseason.
  • The loss was Anaheim’s first at home in the playoffs. They were ahead 3-0 at Honda Center.

figures

  • The shots on goal gave Anaheim a 33–28 victory.
  • Hits were 53–23 in favor of Anaheim.
  • Power play chances were three for Vegas and two for Anaheim.
  • Faceoff winning percentage favored Vegas 56.9% to 43.1%.
  • Blocked shots heavily favored Vegas 20-6.
  • Vegas had double the gift, 16-8, but the takeaway was also double, 8-4.

Mitch Johnson reacts to gaining home court advantage in the first round

The San Antonio Spurs barely broke a sweat in their game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday at the FedExForum as they ran away with a lopsided 123-98 victory.

The Spurs demonstrated their strength from the beginning, defeating the Grizzlies 38-19. From there it was just a formality. San Antonio won its seventh consecutive game and improved to 55–18.

The Spurs also secured homecourt advantage in the first round, returning to the playoffs after a six-year absence.

San Antonio coach Mitch Johnson acknowledged this significant gainBut as Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News reported, he also remained quiet about it.

Johnson said, “I would expect it to be loud with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm. But it’s still a little bit away, so hopefully we can keep getting better and make some improvements in a lot of areas.”

The 39-year-old Johnson is in his first full season with the Spurs after taking over from Gregg Popovich. He has big shoes to fill, but clearly, he’s up for the challenge.

He has molded the team into a two-way force. They have guys like Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Cassel, De’Aaron Fox and Devin Vassell playing comfortably, while finding the right role for Keldon Johnson and utilizing Dylan Harper off the bench.

The last time the Spurs were in the playoffs in 2020, Johnson was still an unknown deputy to Popovich. But the seeds were being sown, and because of his deep knowledge of the game and inherent leadership, it was only a matter of time until he was tapped to have a shot.

Now, Johnson and the Spurs are on their way to success.

Mitch Johnson gets real after brutal 6-game challenge

The San Antonio Spurs followed up with a rodeo road trip that matched the best edition of their annual jaunt since their inception in 2003, with a home stand that was almost as impressive. Clutchpoints were discussed in detail with head coach Mitch Johnson.

“You feel the intensity and the competitiveness. The teams that you’re talking about and the urgency that a lot of them have, I think it’s been really good for us to go through these games and find out about other teams and find out about ourselves.”

Whichever team Johnson’s group plays during its six games at the Frost Bank Center is a postseason contender that will likely at least make the play-ins. Three of those teams are widely considered to be among the best in the NBA.

Spurs role as postseason contender

San Antonio began their home games with a win against the Detroit Pistons, entering the night tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the fewest losses in the league. The very next night, the Spurs overcame a 25-point deficit to defeat a Portland Trail Blazers unit that is in eighth place in the Western Conference.

The Silver and Black then defeated the Houston Rockets by 25 points, who were in third place in the West at the time. Next came the Boston Celtics. Like Houston, Boston is in third place in its conference, and like the Celtics, the Rockets fell. Two nights later, without Victor Wembanyama, the Alamo City welcomed a Denver Nuggets team that was in fourth place in the West. This would prove to be the only game of six that the Spurs would lose as after Wembley recovered from an ankle injury, they defeated a Charlotte Hornets team that is in 10th place in the East. Loss-wise, Charlotte is five losses ahead of that last spot in the conference play-in spot.

“We’ve had to participate in a lot of different types of games, whether it’s getting a little open and covering a lot of distance defensively, matching some physicality in a lot of different ways, execution late in the game, seeing different ways for guys to defend us,” Johnson said of ClutchPoints’ tenure.

San Antonio held Charlotte without a field goal for more than five minutes in the fourth quarter, defeating the Hornets 115–102 to close the home stand.

“I thought we settled in. Had a little ups and downs in the third quarter, got open a little bit, and it’s hard to save them when the game is like that.” Johnson said.

The Spurs’ first-year head coach added, “I thought we did a really good job of fixing our defense, even if it wasn’t weak.” “It’s always easy to get organized by moving away from artificial things, but I thought we did a good job of getting set up, staying connected and getting them ready to play through their counters; or just the beginning shooters trying to get a look because they’re very good at seeing those guys and progressing from that to the next guys.”

Going 5-1 after an 8-1 record during the Rodeo Road Trip to include two ‘home’ games in Austin gives the Spurs a 49-18 mark for the season. Johnson hopes it will serve his championship contender well.

“Hopefully all of these experiences are lessons that we will turn into knowledge and wisdom as we move forward.”

Mitch Johnson weighs in on Victor Wembanyama’s MVP case amid historic season

There is little debate that Victor Wembanyama has become one of the NBA’s top players in his third season. The 23-year-old’s stellar performances have earned the San Antonio Spurs the status of legitimate contenders. Is that enough to make him the league’s youngest-ever MVP?

Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson thinks so.

“He is a great facilitator to help his team win [as anybody]” Johnson said before Thursday’s matchup with the Brooklyn Nets. “The individual stuff that is recognized as the best or most valuable is offense, defense, boards and everything that comes in between. He is at the forefront for [each of] They. And there are other guys in the league who do that, too. I haven’t delved into it, but I definitely think it’s in the conversation. It would be difficult for anyone to make a logical argument as to why he is not in that conversation.”

Wembanyama’s two-way contributions have led the Spurs to the NBA’s third-best record (42–16).

The French phenom is averaging 24.0 points, 11.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists on .503/.353/.812 shooting splits. Offensively, he is one of six players averaging more than 24 points on 50 percent or better shooting, along with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant and Austin Reaves.

Meanwhile, Vembanyama continues to wield historic influence defensively. He leads the NBA with 3.9 steals (steals + blocks) per game, and 0.8 ahead of the next highest player (Scotty Barnes: 3.0). According to CleaningTheGlass, the Spurs allow 10.6 fewer points per 100 possessions on the court versus off, which is the NBA’s second-largest defensive rating swing, behind only Rudy Gobert (-12.7).

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Wembanyama currently has the fifth-best MVP odds at +3300, behind Gilgeous-Alexander (-190), Jokic (+300), Cade Cunningham (+1400) and Luka Doncic (+2000). The Spurs star can only miss three more games to maintain his eligibility.

Mitch Johnson talks San Antonio draft pick’s rapid improvement amid Player of the Week honors

San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Ingram has spent much of this season honing his skills behind the scenes. The quiet development of the 2024 second-round pick has been a source of satisfaction within the Spurs organization.

Ingram was named G League Player of the Week after averaging 22.2 points, 13.4 rebounds and 7.4 assists in his last five appearances with the Austin Spurs. He recorded four double-doubles and one triple-double, while Austin posted a 4–1 record.

Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson said of Ingram’s development, “The Player of the Week is definitely trending in the right direction.” “I think it’s always somewhat gratifying for him, somewhat beneficial as an organization and a staff, and somewhat fun when you have a young player in your program for a year and they’re grinding, especially when you’re in the G League and it can be a little out of sight, out of mind to the outside world. You’re selling them on slowly getting better and keeping up with the process.

“It can be hard for young guys when, sometimes, they don’t get the attention or direct feedback that they’re looking for or that they’re used to, especially because a lot of them end up being really good college players. So it’s great for him to continue to be that way and see the improvement and development that he’s had and to be recognized in a very deserving way.”

Ingram, the No. 48 pick in the 2024 draft out of North Carolina, has spent most of this season in the G League, appearing in just five NBA games.

The 6-foot-5 forward’s two-way development with Austin has been encouraging for San Antonio. Ingram is averaging 16.1 points, 12.7 rebounds and 4.8 assists on 48.2 percent shooting in 21 G League appearances.

“He’s really accepted his role and embraced it,” Johnson said. “It can be hard to do that in terms of your role as a defender, a physical role player, playing off the ball to a certain extent. But always trying to extend or create more possessions with offensive rebounds, hitting open shots, getting out and running in transition, and obviously we want him to be a dominant defender and be able to rebound. I think that’s something he’s really embraced and you’ve seen it. And sometimes when you do that If you do it, you get a monster production with it, you can tell he has put his energy in the right places.”

The Spurs signed Ingram to a one-year, two-way contract before this season.

Mitch Johnson’s heartfelt message to Devin Booker amid hip injury

The San Antonio Spurs picked up where they left off before the midseason break with an easy 121-94 win over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday at the Moody Center.

After a hard-fought first half, the Spurs outscored the Suns 37–22 in the third quarter, blowing the game open.

San Antonio won its eighth straight and moved to 39–16, while Phoenix fell to 32–24. The loss could be extra costly for the Suns, as Devin Booker was forced to exit early with a hip injury and did not return.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson sent a message of support for Booker, who has struggled to stay healthy this season.

“Hopefully, Devin is OK. You hate to see one of the league’s premier players get injured,” Johnson said, as quoted by Jared Weiss of The Athletic.

Booker played only nine minutes, tallying five points and one rebound.

He has already missed 13 matches due to an ankle injury.

Stephen Cassel had 20 points, four assists and three steals to lead the Spurs, with Victor Wembanyama adding 17 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. De’Aaron Fox contributed 15 points, three rebounds and eight assists.

Booker’s premature exit further troubled the Suns, who were playing without Dillon Brooks due to a one-game suspension.

Jalen Green led Phoenix with 26 points, three rebounds and three steals in his second game back from a hamstring injury. Mark Williams contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds.

It’s unclear whether Booker will miss an extended period of time, but as Johnson said, it would be good for the league to get the All-Star guard back on the court as soon as possible.

Jeremy Souchon doesn’t ‘see eye to eye’ with Spurs’ Mitch Johnson

Former San Antonio Spurs power forward Jeremy Sochan has yet to make his debut for the New York Knicks. However, he has a lot to say about his former home, recently revealing that he would not have seen eye to eye with Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson over some issues.

The 22-year-old revealed that he wanted a bigger role in the team, something that might be due to the Spurs’ deep roster.

“There’s no real opportunity in my opinion. It is what it is. It’s a deep team. Maybe I didn’t get one-on-one with the coach. I’m just fortunate to have somewhere to grow,” he said, per James L. Edwards III of The Athletic.

While his desire for more minutes was acknowledged even by Johnson himself, this move appears to be the best solution for all parties involved.

“We were all well aware of his desire to be in the rotation and given more opportunities, especially recently. We wanted to do the right thing for him and make sure he has that opportunity before the year is out,” Johnson said, per Yahoo Sports.

The Spurs’ rotation tightened amid roster changes and internal development priorities, causing Sochan’s minutes to drop to just 12.8 per game during the 2025–26 campaign. His exit also depletes San Antonio’s 2022 first-round class, as none of the three selections from that draft remain with the franchise (Blake Wesley and Malachi Branham).

While Sochan averaged only 4.1 points and 2.6 assists during the 12.8 minutes per game he spent on the court, his defensive versatility and effort were never questioned. Sochan was simply on a team that needed more from him in terms of floor spacing and offensive ability, and last season he didn’t get the minutes he needed to prove his worth alongside Victor Wembanyama.

He, the 22-year-old, will be hoping to change the Knicks for the better.

Big game Mitch! Marner starts new era with overtime heroics

When Mitch Marner left Toronto last summer, he did so with that reputation hanging over his head like a cartoon storm cloud.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are a historic, Original Six franchise. Marner left his mark on his record by wearing his hometown team’s sweater during his 657 games. At the conclusion of his Leafs tenure, Marner was fifth in scoring with 751 points. He was and still is fourth in career assists with 520.

But when fans talk about Marner, they don’t even mention his offensive talent, or his perennial candidacy for the Selke Trophy. Instead, they refer to him as someone who disappears when the lights are brightest.

in an article for athleticJonas Siegel called Marner a ‘two-way powerhouse’ who helped the Maple Leafs win a lot of games in the regular season.

He wrote, “But this was not the player who got them in the postseason, at least not often, and certainly not in the biggest games.”

“In [2025] In the playoffs, the Leafs swept their way around the Ottawa Senators in the first round and took a 2–0 series lead against the Panthers, but squandered it in disastrous fashion. Siegel wrote in a separate article, Marner again failed to produce when the Leafs needed him most.

Mark Stone, his teammate on the Vegas Golden Knights, disagreed with the sentiment that Marner was not a ‘clutch’ player.

“As a teammate, I haven’t experienced this,” he said after Marner led Canada to a 4-3 overtime win on Wednesday. “[At] 4 Nations, he gets a big overtime goal for us [against Sweden]Makes for an incredible game for the winner [in the gold medal game]. Then tonight, when we need him most, he makes a play.

“So… I guess it’s a Toronto thing,” Stone finished.

Marner is in the midst of his first season with the Golden Knights. Thus, he has not yet had the opportunity to fully shed his playoff demons. But Stone brought up three different ‘big moments’ where Marner came through for his team.

The first ‘big moment’ was Canada’s first game in the 4 Nations tournament. Canada led 3–1 after 40 minutes, but lost the third period. But in overtime, Marner answered the call and saved Canada from disaster with a heroic solo-try goal.

The second ‘big moment’ came just eight days later in the gold medal game at the 4 Nations tournament. Canada trailed 2–1 in the third period, but Marner forced a Sam Bennett goal to force overtime. And in overtime, Marner again had a big play, finding Connor McDavid alone for the game-winner.

The final – and arguably the biggest – ‘big moment’ was the quarter-final match between Czechia and Canada. Trailing 3–2, Canada scored late in the third period and forced overtime. And in overtime, as he had done against Sweden a year earlier in the 4 Nations, Marner did it himself and scored a goal to send Canada to the semi-finals.

Calling Marner a player who can’t perform in big moments is simply not accurate.

Maybe Mark Stone is right. maybe this Is A ‘Toronto thing.’

Mitch Marner’s Team Canada teammates booed by Maple Leafs after OT winner

This must have been a bittersweet moment for many hockey fans in Toronto. Watching Mitch Marner score the spectacular overtime winner for Team Canada over Czechia in the Olympic hockey quarter-finals had many Maple Leafs fans wondering why he hadn’t been so clutch for the Blue and White in the Stanley Cup playoffs all these years.

But Marner’s Team Canada teammates supported the winger after the thrilling OT win.

It started with his Vegas Golden Knights teammate Mark Stone, who is playing with Marner in the Olympics. Stone was asked about Marner’s thoughts on not being ‘clutch’:

As a teammate, I haven’t had that experience. 4 Nations, he gets a big overtime goal for us, makes an incredible play for the winner. Then tonight, when we need him most, he makes a play. So… I guess it’s a Toronto thing.

Truly a ‘Toronto thing’.

Tampa Bay Lightning star and Canadian teammate Brandon Hagel also gave his support to Mitch and dismissed the ‘not clutch’ narrative.

Hagel said, “I thought he wasn’t a big game player? He just showed the world.”

The most viral post about all this comes from former NHL All-Star goaltender Roberto Luongo, whose legendary status as a goaltender is only surpassed by his famous Twitter account. Moments after Marner’s memorable game-winner, he came up with this beauty:

In fact, Marner was born to wear the maple leaf on his chest. However, at this point, it will be the red one, not the blue and white one.

To be fair, this isn’t the first big-game goal Marner has scored for Canada in the last 12 months. He also scored a big overtime winner against Sweden in the 4 Nations last year, and then made a pass to Connor McDavid for the OT winner in that tournament a few days later.

What are Marner’s playoff stats with the Maple Leafs?

However, in fairness, to present both sides of the argument, we should point out Marner’s playoff record versus his regular season mark while a member of the Maple Leafs.

In 657 regular season games with Toronto, Marner had 221 goals and 741 points in 657 games. That’s an average of 1.13 points per game. In the playoffs? In 70 games over nine years with the Leafs, Marner had 13 goals and 63 points. That’s 0.9 points per game. And breaking it down to just Games 5, 6, and 7 of the playoff series, as many critics believe, Marner’s points-per-game drops to just 0.42 with 11 points in 26 such games.

Sure, you can debate whether a key goal in Games 1 to 4 is as big a deal as a key goal in Games 5 to 7 in a playoff series, but the numbers are shocking nonetheless.

The story has been going on for a long time. But perhaps Marner’s clutch genes are finally emerging with the help of these huge international competitions. Let’s see if this transfers to the NHL now.

When the Golden Knights take to the ice for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, we’ll finally be able to see if it was really a ‘Toronto thing’ that was holding Mitch back.
