Cutman Jacob “Stitch” Duran is standing by his decision to cancel Nate Diaz’s fight against Mike Perry, telling MMA Junkie Radio that he was left with no other option but to protect his fighter.

Duran was brought into the program specifically at Diaz’s request to work in Diaz’s corner. When the fight deteriorated, he called to intervene and advised the referee to stop the fight.

Diaz was hit in several places during the fight, a cut on the right side of his forehead caused profuse bleeding which Duran was unable to stop. Diaz also suffered a broken finger during the bout and later told Duran that he could not see due to the bleeding. Diaz finished the night with 15 staples and 20 stitches.

“He was beaten,” Duran told MMA Junkie Radio. “Mike was very strong, very aggressive.” Duran said he told referee Diaz that he was not going to back down despite the official pressuring him to continue.

The crowd at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California reacted with condemnation and was criticized on social media. Duran said no one changed his viewpoint. The reassurance he needed came directly from Diaz. Durán said that after the fight Diaz thanked him and hugged him when he said goodbye, Diaz’s father was also present to thank him. Duran said Diaz admitted he couldn’t see, which he said was the deciding factor.

“My job is to protect the fighter,” Duran said. “That’s what I did to Nate.”

The stoppage drew additional attention, considering the night’s co-main event, the bout between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano on Netflix, also ended in a stoppage between rounds two and three. Duran said he has since received praise from within the combat sports industry, including a message from boxing legend Marco Antonio Barrera.

“I got a lot of compliments from people in the industry,” Duran said. “they understand.”

For many longtime UFC fans, St-Pierre is the greatest fighter in MMA history. The Canadian player performed brilliantly during his 15 years in the game. He amassed a record of 26–2 and would become the greatest welterweight of all time after successfully defending the title 10 times. He then cemented his place as a true legend when he returned after a four-year retirement to win the UFC middleweight belt in 2017.

It was the perfect way to end his incredible career, and he has never returned to high-level competition since. However, he left the door open in a new interview with MMA Junkie this week. During the conversation, he admitted that “he gets requests once or twice a month to fight in MMA, boxing, grappling or grappling.”

Yet instead of saying he turned them all down because he was already competing in high-level combat sports, he said it just wasn’t the right time to be involved in those opportunities. He is currently prioritizing other projects and has been dealing with a back injury recently. Still, the 44-year-old UFC great isn’t exactly against the eventual matchup in any case.

That information should perk up the MVP and Netflix offices. If the event is successful, Netflix will definitely be open to another one as live sports content is a major priority for the streaming service right now. But with the UFC tightening its grip on the top talent in the sport, MVP will again have to turn to some veteran names, and St-Pierre would be a strong choice. Especially if the fight took place in Canada.

But which opponents would the MMA icon actually consider returning to fight? The two names are most meaningful. They are Anderson Silva and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

A super-fight between St-Pierre and Silva is something UFC fans wanted badly in 2010 and 2011. Although it seemed like a real possibility at the time, it never happened. The Brazilian turned 51 last month, has the fight with GSP gone well, is this the best buy date? Yes, but if it was on Netflix old school fans would still watch it. Furthermore, we are in a time when their major fighting legends are fighting all the time, and fans are tuning in to them.

St-Pierre vs Nurmagomedov fight that will really intrigue fans. The Russian will turn 38 in September, so the age issue is less ridiculous than the St-Pierre and Silva matchup and more on par with what we’ll see this weekend. The UFC lightweight legend has said in the past that GSP was his late father’s favorite fighter, and he always wanted a confrontation with “Rush”.

The biggest issue in the making is whether Nurmagomedov still has a contractual relationship with the UFC. Plus, there’s also a real possibility that UFC CEO Dana White will try to jump in and steal the fight from MVP.

Either way, there’s just a crack in the door, and MVP-Netflix should be questioning whether Rousey vs. Carano is a success.

Simply put, Jacob Dobbs was clearly the team’s MVP, as evidenced by the fact that he stopped 181 of 196 shots sent his way, good for a .923 save percentage, well above his regular-season save percentage of .901. It’s also worth noting that he faced 80 high-danger scoring chances, which is a testament to his ability to make a big save when the Canadiens needed it most.

Dobbs may have less experience than most NHL goaltenders, but he gave the Canadiens the confidence they needed to contend for long periods in which the Lightning dominated, which equates to a veteran presence in net.

Montreal Canadiens Best of the Rest

With six points in seven games, not only did Lane Hutson co-lead the Canadiens in scoring with Nick Suzuki, but he also reminded us that he’s not done setting the tone for his NHL career yet.

We already knew he was a dominant presence in the regular season, but it quickly became clear that he had even more to offer in the playoffs.

When it comes to Montreal’s battle fleet, Hutson is a rising tide that lifts all ships.

Everyone will say Dobbs but I’m picking Hutson. He’s a rock star on defense, he changes games if you look at his minutes.

Given that the Habs lacked much of a sustained attack at 5v5 from their first line, they relied on a range of players to complement their offensive contributions.

You would be hard-pressed to find a particular depth forward who excelled, as there were several excellent options, including power forward Josh Anderson. He scored the first two goals of the series at 5v5, and his physical play set the tone against an incredibly attractive Lightning lineup.

Habs fans were also quite pointed to the excellent play of the third line, who was actually used as a second line or possibly fourth line at various times in the series. Regardless, the play of Alexandre Texier, Kirby Dach and Zachary Bolduc was key to overcoming the lack of attack from the first line.

As far as defensemen not named Hutson go, Canadiens fans raved about Arbor Zekaj, and although he did not dress for Game 7, it’s fair to say he performed very well in his limited usage against Tampa Bay.

With Szekaj on the ice, the Habs controlled 57% of the shots at 5v5, a significant feat when we remember the Canadiens were ahead by a large margin (316-260). Full marks to Jaden Struble, who served as Zekaj’s defensive partner for much of the series, as he also produced elite numbers on the third pairing.

There was one member of the organization who did not score a single goal, or provide an assist. He could not manage to score even a single hit.

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

And yet, Habs fans wanted to make sure head coach Martin Saint-Louis received recognition for the first-round win.

Through 58 games this season, the 27-year-old has averaged 33.4 points, 8.4 assists, 7.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game, while shooting 47.7 percent from the field, 37 percent from three-point range and 77.2 percent from the free-throw line.

Smith acknowledged that Doncic’s MVP chances may be affected by the Lakers’ past inconsistency, but said his current level of play is difficult to ignore.

The San Antonio Spurs have a stranglehold on the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with 15 games remaining on the regular season schedule. While the team is focused on making the playoffs, it looks like Victor Wembanyama has some lofty MVP and Defensive Player of the Year goals.

During the postgame press conference following the Spurs’ 115-102 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday, the 22-year-old center claimed he is making sure to keep his body fit and healthy for the final stretch of the season. He also claimed that he wants to win not only the MVP but also the DPOY this year.

“Right now, I’m taking great care of my body because I want to win MVP and DPOY as well,” Vembanyama said. “So, I’m just trying to press the gas from now until the end of the season. Really take care of my treatment, take care of my sleep, take care of my routine and perform for my team.”

Victor Vembanyama may very well achieve his goal of winning both MVP and DPOY this year. He’s at least making a strong case for his stellar play, averaging 24.2 points, 11.1 rebounds (career-high), 2.9 assists, 1.0 steals and 3.0 blocks (league-leader) per game. He is shooting 50.6% from the floor and 36.0% from beyond the three-point line, both career highs.

An MVP and DPOY would be a nice addition to Vembanyama’s trophy case. The third-year veteran already has the Rookie of the Year award for his efforts in the 2023-24 campaign. He was also named to the All-NBA Defensive Team that year. Vembanyama will have the chance to prove he is worthy of the two awards on Monday, March 16. The Spurs are scheduled to take on the Los Angeles Clippers in LA at 7 PM EST.

While the 65-game rule forces teams to play their stars regardless of their record, Nuggets coach David Edelman understands the importance of fans attending games. He doesn’t think this rule should apply to guys like Jokic and Gilgeous-Alexander, who rarely miss games intentionally.

“It’s the worst when your bus is parking, and you see kids in jerseys, and they show up, and that guy doesn’t play,” Edelman said. “I look at it both ways, but in the spirit of the game, I think Shai and Nicola have been great for the league over the years. I hope that’s taken into account as we move forward.”

Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander return for Nuggets

After missing the past nine games, Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander returns from an abdominal injury for Friday’s contest against Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets. It’s always must-see TV when Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokic are going at it.

After last year’s Western Conference Semifinals best-of-7 series, where the Thunder and Nuggets played Game 7 at Paycom Center, this should be another playoff-like intensity with SGA and Jokic taking center stage.

Cade Cunningham is having arguably the best season of his career so far, as he leads the Detroit Pistons to the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference through 57 games. Shaquille O’Neal believes Cunningham deserves the MVP award because he is playing so well. Even higher than Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown.

During a segment on “ESPN Tip-Off,” Shaq believed the 24-year-old guard is one of the most “complete” players in the league at the moment. The former veteran center turned NBA analyst likes the way Cunningham plays and believes he deserves the MVP trophy for helping make the Pistons a true contender once again.

“I watched [Cunningham] Play the next day, and he has a complete game,” Shack said. “He does everything right. More often than not, he gets everything right all the time. The way he plays, his speed, how he’s playing, and [the Pistons] Found that form. Kenny, you know what I’m talking about. Like, ‘We’re on a mission this year.’

The fifth-year veteran earned his second All-Star award this season, as he has been one of the most efficient players in the league so far. Through 51 games played, Cade Cunningham has averaged 25.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 9.8 assists (career-high), and 1.5 steals (career-high) per contest, while shooting 45.9% from the floor and 33.9% from beyond the three-point line.

Cunningham and the Pistons reached the playoffs last season, but were ultimately eliminated by the New York Knicks in the first round. This was the first playoff appearance for the franchise since the 2018–19 season. This year, Detroit is playing like they have something to prove, and the performance of Cade Cunningham is playing a big factor in their success.

As the NBA regular season heads into its final stages, one name that has emerged as one of the candidates for the league’s MVP award is Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham. The Pistons have been one of the best teams in the league all season, with Cunningham as their top player. According to ESPN’s Vincent Goodwill, it’s a big reason why Pistons head coach JB Bickerstaff believes his star should take home the NBA’s top honor.

Bickerstaff said, “The best player on the team with the best winning percentage, to me, is the guy who deserves to be MVP.” “He doesn’t take up nights or time or possessions defensively. He’ll run his 25 and make his teammates better.”

Cade Cunningham certainly has a big case for the MVP award, and JB Bickerstaff is right to campaign for his player. Cunningham has taken a huge step forward this year as the driving force behind the Pistons’ success. The team is currently 43–14 and in first place in the Eastern Conference standings. To put it in perspective, the No. 2 seed Boston Celtics are five and a half games behind them.

As Bickerstaff noted, the Pistons’ 75.4 winning percentage is the best in the league, just ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder, whose 45-15 record puts them at a perfect 75 percent.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Cunningham is in his fifth season in the NBA. He was selected for his second consecutive All-Star appearance. He has played just over 34 minutes per game in 51 games this year.
