Mysterious Rob Dillingham wrist injury makes Chicago’s chaotic trade deadline even more bizarre

Injuries continue to be an issue for the Chicago Bulls, especially to newcomers. Jaden Ivey and Anfernee Simmons are both out with injuries. Now, Rob Dillingham has faltered.

Dillingham suffered a strange wrist injury during Tuesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors. Although the Bulls won 130-124 in OT, concerns about the health of players are more uncertain than ever.

Afterwards, according to Julia Poe of The Chicago Tribune, head coach Billy Donovan provided an analysis of Dillingham’s injury. Necessarily saying it’s not terrible, but he needs time to get back into the team.

“It’s nothing too serious, but he has some wrist issues that need to be addressed in the offseason,” Donovan said. “He doesn’t feel OK all the time shooting the basketball. I think he’ll be OK once everything gets settled, but it’s something he’s struggling with and dealing with.”

Overall, Dillingham played 20 minutes and finished with five points and four rebounds.

Meanwhile, the bulls are in a very delicate position. In February, they made seven trades before the trade deadline, causing fans and observers to ask more questions about the franchise’s long-term plans.

Dillingham arrived in Chicago from the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of the deal that sent Ayo Dosunmu to Minnesota. Originally, Dillingham was brought in to give him more opportunities to score and play more minutes.

However, with Ivey, Simmons and their injuries, the validity of the Bulls’ decision making over the past month is under even greater scrutiny.

Meanwhile, the Bulls will kick off their five-game road trip in Los Angeles. On Thursday they will play the Lakers and on Friday they will play the Clippers.

Referee explains Luka Doncic’s mysterious technical foul

The Los Angeles Lakers lost 120-113 to the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night, but the biggest conversation afterward focused on Luka Doncic and a tricky technical foul during the Western Conference matchup. The Lakers star recorded his 15th technical foul of the season in the loss to the Nuggets, causing confusion among fans and players inside the arena. After the game, referee Ed Malloy clarified the situation in the official pool report shared by Benjamin Royer of the Orange County Register.

“Doncic was issued a technical foul for using profanity toward a referee. We are not trained to stop offensive turnovers when a technical foul is called on defense.”

The clarification helped explain why the whistle did not come immediately. Officials allowed play to continue before assessing a penalty at the next dead-ball moment. Still, the delay left many wondering what actually caused the call to occur.

The moment also overshadowed another strong performance from Doncic under the arena lights. The Lakers guard finished with 27 points on 11 of 24 shooting, while adding 11 rebounds, seven assists and four steals. His influence was visible on the entire game. Yet technical fouls soon became the main story after the Lakers lost another tough matchup against the Nuggets.

Lakers star reacts after controversial technical

Doncic addressed that moment directly after the game. The Lakers guard insisted he tried to remain quiet during the conversation.

“I was trying not to talk at all. The first thing I said was no warnings or nothing,” Doncic said.

Technology has real consequences. It was his 15th of the season. Under NBA rules, a player automatically receives a one-game suspension after reaching 16 technical fouls.

Reporters asked the Lakers starter whether he planned to avoid the second one.

“We’ll see. Can’t predict the future,” he said.

Then he gave a blunt answer about what should happen next.

“Don’t take another technique.”

The Lakers are moving forward now knowing that another blowout could sideline their star. Under the bright lights of the field and the pressure of the playoffs, every word and whistle carries more weight. After Luka Doncic’s technical foul, will the Lakers star survive his 16th whistle, or will the next whistle bring a suspension?

Kristaps Porzingis’ return date uncertain amid ‘mysterious’ illness

SAN FRANCISCO – It’s difficult to say when Kristaps Porzingis will return to the field for the Golden State Warriors.

After debuting against the Boston Celtics, the Dubs’ trade deadline acquisition has missed the last five games due to an illness that the team has not publicly classified or defined, with details about what Porzingis specifically is doing remain sparse.

Before the Warriors’ game with the Los Angeles Clippers, coach Steve Kerr described the nature of Porzingis’ illness in non-descriptive terms.

“It’s a little mysterious,” Kerr told reporters. “We’re obviously working with him and hoping he can get some clarity, and he can kind of move forward and get to a point where he’s going to be consistently healthy. But it’s something the medical staff is working hard with him on, and, yes, I won’t even offer any theories now, any medical theories.”

The last part of Kerr’s answer stems from the confusion he caused regarding Porzingis’ illness when he said in a radio interview that his previous postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) diagnosis was “misinformation”, and that a different illness had forced him to miss a game for Atlanta last year.

Kerr later walked back those comments, and told reporters that what he said was a “stupid mistake” and that he regretted trying to talk about something he is not able to talk about professionally. Now, Kerr’s return doesn’t mean Porzingis’ current ailment is due to POTS. However, this creates a bleak picture about his condition, the nature of his illness and when he will return.

What we know about Porzingis’ situation

We know very little about Porzingis’ condition, as Kerr declined to share specific information about his condition. But what we do know is that Porzingis was able to practice on Friday of last week, when the Dubs returned from their quick two-game, back-to-back road trip. It was his first practice since falling ill, which seemed like an encouraging development ahead of their Saturday game with the Los Angeles Lakers.

But things apparently took a turn for the worse as he was ejected from the Lakers game the next day. And then today before the Clippers game, Porzingis was not at the Warriors’ shootaround this morning.

As for how he’s doing emotionally, Kerr said the two of them talked today.

“Spoke to him today. We had a good conversation and he’s OK,” Kerr shared. “I mean, he obviously wants to come back and wants answers. And we’re going to continue to support him.”

Despite this, this is a precarious situation for the Warriors as they were counting on him to get a boost after the trade deadline. They finally sealed the Jonathan Kuminga era and hope to turn over a new leaf with the size, skill and defense that Porzingis is capable of when fully healthy.

But he is not healthy. And while the Warriors made this trade knowing full well the risk, as Kerr and Mike Dunleavy have said publicly, it’s clear that the gamble hasn’t paid off at all so far.

For now, the Dubs will continue to monitor Porzingis’ health as uncertainty looms over his return date.

Why are the Warriors downplaying Stephen Curry’s mysterious knee injury?

Stephen Curry has not played since Jan. 30, when the Golden State Warriors lost to the Detroit Pistons 131-124. Not only was Steph dealing with knee issues midway through the season, but he was not looking good after an awkward layup attempt in the third quarter of this game. Curry left the game not feeling like himself and was later ruled out due to right knee pain.

Since this moment, the Warriors have gone 2-3 without their leader and were expected to be ready to go after his lengthy absence at the All-Star break. However, head coach Steve Kerr revealed on Wednesday evening that Steph will not play against the Boston Celtics on Thursday after the break, and it is possible that he may receive a second MRI to determine the exact nature of his knee pain.

“Steph didn’t practice today,” Kerr told reporters in San Francisco, via ClutchPoints’ Kenzo Fukuda. “He will be re-evaluated by our training staff tonight, but he was not where he needed to be for testing. It’s unfortunate, but we will have an update tomorrow after he spends his time with the training staff.”

Curry has been trying to get back on the field for the Warriors behind the scenes and during the All-Star break, yet the pain in his knee is still there, and he doesn’t feel he is ready to go through a full workout.

Warriors continue to downplay Stephen Curry’s knee injury

Over the past three weeks, Curry has been suffering from right patellofemoral pain syndrome, also known as runner’s knee, on the Warriors’ injury report, which typically takes several days of rest and time off to heal. Initially, the team was labeling Curry day-to-day due to his knee injury.

Friday will mark exactly three weeks since the injury.

Despite Kerr’s concerning announcement on Wednesday and Curry not attending Thursday’s game against the Celtics, the Warriors have continued to downplay Steph’s knee illness. Team sources told ClutchPoints that the organization does not see it as a major concern in the final stages of the regular season, and described the situation as being handled with utmost caution by the franchise.

Since the Warriors are already without Jimmy Butler for the remainder of the year and not where they were expected to be in the standings as a result, there is no margin for error. That’s why Golden State is taking an abundance of caution with Curry and will continue to wait for him to be 100 percent before returning to the court.

Still, the health of Curry’s knee for the remainder of the season is not a concern for the Warriors at this time, with sources saying he would play if the playoffs started today.

As the Warriors prepare for the end of the regular season, they find themselves 29-26 overall, three full games behind the Phoenix Suns for the 7-seed in the West standings. Although the Dubs are battling injury problems and hovering around .500 on the year, the organization is still optimistic about their chances of competing for a 6-seed or better in the Western Conference.

With six games remaining against those currently ranked in the top four of the West standings, there are plenty of opportunities for Golden State to prove themselves as competitive threats this season. Butler may be out for the year with his ACL injury, but the Warriors will get their first look at Kristaps Porzingis when he makes his debut against Boston on Thursday.

As for Curry, his knee will continue to receive treatment and he hopes to return soon. At this time, there is no clear timetable for when he will actually return, simply because it is a pain-tolerant injury based on the overall strength of his knee.

The Warriors understand that their playoff hopes are completely dependent on Curry’s overall health, which is why he will not be rushed back into action.

In 39 games this season, Curry is averaging 27.2 points and 4.8 assists while shooting 46.8 percent from the floor and 39.1 percent from 3-point range. He once again leads the league in both 3-pointers attempted (4.5) and 3-pointers attempted (11.5) per game.

Thursday night will be Curry’s 17th absence of the season, meaning he will officially be ineligible for season-ending honors and awards if he misses another game.

Manchester City rumour can be shot down – Player back in squad after mysterious absence

Anyone who may have gotten excited about Wesley imminently arriving at Manchester City can calm themselves down.

Why? Because he’s back in the Roma squad for their clash with Sassuolo. That’s according to Inside Roma, who say he’s managed to shake off the flu.

That same bout of flu had caused plenty of transfer speculation this week. A report yesterday, from Globo Esporte, stated that Manchester City had been in direct contact about a move to the Etihad for the Brazilian this month. They were backing up reports from England about the defender being of interest to Pep Guardiola.

That report from Brazil indicated that Manchester City had been following the defender for months. His performances at Roma have apparently convinced them they were right to look at him.

Then Wesley’s absence from the Roma squad caused plenty of raised eyebrows. Gian Piero Gasperini insisted it was flu and nothing more. But the timing was certainly curious, and healthy fuel for the transfer rumour flames.

Now they can be dismissed. Inside Roma report he’s back in the squad and the flu has been fought off. That should pour enough cold water on the Manchester City rumours for the time being.
