Olympic goaltender linked to trade talks

The Detroit Red Wings need to make big changes and rumors are already flying. Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman clearly stated in the post-season conference call that the team needed better players to advance in the Stanley Cup playoffs. In fact, one NHL insider has an idea for Detroit in a potential trade this summer.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman believes the Red Wings should focus on St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington during the offseason, according to an insider on the 32 Thoughts Podcast. Friedman didn’t think John Gibson and Cam Talbot were problems, but would represent a potential upgrade.

Binnington was the starting goaltender for Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina, leading them to a silver medal. Meanwhile, the 32-year-old goaltender struggled to perform in St. Louis, posting an .873 save percentage and allowing 3.33 goals per game. Although the statistics were not good, Binnington is still a good goaltender.

Prior to his struggles during the 2025–26 NHL season, Binnington had two campaigns with a save percentage over .900 and fewer than 2.9 goals allowed per game. When it matters most, the St. Louis goaltender shows up, as he did in the 2026 Olympics and his last two appearances in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

There are a few things that can stop a potential deal. Detroit’s system has a plethora of highly regarded goaltender prospects. With top prospects Sebastian Cosa and Trey Augustin on the sidelines, the organization may be more willing to ride with Gibson again and show patience.

After all, the Red Wings have other areas of need, including an elite forward and a new bottom six. For now, it’s an interesting idea, but Binnington may not need it.

Washington Commander’s icon returning to the field at 66 to capture Olympic gold?

Washington Commander-One of the greatest players in Redskins history is returning to the field for the first time in 24 years, and it’s all in an attempt to win Olympic gold in 2028.

In two years, the Olympics will return to the United States for the Los Angeles Summer Games. And for the first time, American football will be among the games played. However, it will not be traditional tackle football and will instead mark the debut of flag football as an Olympic sport.

This week, national team tryouts are taking place in Chula Vista, California, and one of the athletes vying for a spot on the USA Soccer roster is a Hall of Famer. The Associated Press reports that Washington Commanders veteran Darrell Green will be one of the players competing in the tryouts.

What makes this news so interesting is that the seven-time Pro Bowler’s 66th birthday is just a few weeks away. And the last time he played in an NFL game was in 2002. However, Green will go down as one of the greatest cornerbacks in league history because he was a freak athlete with epic speed, and it looks like the senior has some left in the tank.

“Darrell qualified through our digital combination. He’s later in his career than other testing participants, but his testing results were impressive,” Kelly Brownson, senior director of high performance and national teams for USA Soccer, told the AP. “Our coaches and staff felt he deserved a closer look. … He is a rare athlete who has remained in shape and is ready to compete this week.”

Green went viral in 2024 after a video surfaced showing how good the 64-year-old athlete was still when he took some high school players under the tree of learning in a training session. Furthermore, this is the same guy who ran a 4.2 40 yard dash in 2000 at age 40.

If there was any player who could surprise USA Soccer officials and earn a spot on the team, it’s Darrell Green. It also helps that some current NFL stars will be taking part in flag football’s Olympic debut.

The corner played all 20 of his NFL seasons in Washington, and is their all-time leader in games played, interceptions and defensive touchdowns. He was the first inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

Minnesota Wild linked to blockbuster trade for Olympic gold medalist

The Minnesota Wild are looking for an upgrade at center by the NHL trade deadline. After trading for defenseman Quinn Hughes, the Wild hope to complete their roster to make a big push at the Stanley Cup. Now, Minnesota is being linked to a big trade of the Olympic gold medalist to Team USA.

Minnesota is still in pursuit of New York Rangers center Vincent Trocheck, reports Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet on TNT. Trocheck, who was part of the Olympic gold medal team for the United States at the 2026 Winter Olympics, is the main focus of New York’s trade deadline plans.

The 32-year-old center has 12 goals and 38 points in 45 games with New York this season. Despite New York’s struggles, Trocheck is still performing at an elite level, especially on the power play. Trocheck is a top-six option for a Stanley Cup-caliber team, and Minnesota would be a perfect fit.

Hughes, along with Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy and Brock Faber, have the Wild poised for big performances in the Western Conference. The Minnesota trade for Trocheck would officially solidify their place among Stanley Cup contending teams. Currently, the Wild are in third place in the Central Division with 80 points.

Trocheck is under contract for the 2028–29 NHL season with a $5.625 million cap hit. The 32-year-old center is still performing at a high level, and his cap hit is good for teams to acquire. Minnesota has been searching for an elite center since December, and Trocheck would check the box.

Victor Wembanyama praises potential Olympic teammate Nolan Traore amid encouraging debut with Brooklyn

Nolan Traore is finding his feet with the Brooklyn Nets. The 19-year-old rookie has impressed with his composure as the team’s primary ball-handler after earning the starting role. He put in another encouraging performance against fellow Frenchman Victor Wembanyama during Brooklyn’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday.

Wembanyama, who first met Traoré during the French national team’s preparations for the 2024 Olympics, spoke highly of his potential future teammate.

“[Nolan’s] Very young, and he was even younger when we were preparing for the Olympics in 2024,” he said, “and already, what I saw in him was maturity and the way he could control the game. And by the way, it doesn’t matter who the opponent is. He has real guts, and I believe he is someone who will make incredible growth in his career.

Many considered Traore to be one of the top five prospects at the start of the 2025 pre-draft process. However, after an up and down 2024-25 season, he dropped to number 19 in the nets.

Nolan Traore impresses in starting point guard role in Nets’ rebuild

Traore struggled during his first NBA appearance and the Nets assigned him to the G League at the beginning of the season. After a highly productive extension with Long Island, the rookie point guard has emerged as the focal point of Brooklyn’s offense during the second half of the season.

Traore is averaging 11.9 points, 2.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists on 44/30/76 shooting splits in 15 starts. The French floor general is the only NBA rookie to average 11 points and five assists during that span. His 6.2 assists per 100 possessions this season ranks third among all rookies who have played more than 800 minutes, trailing only Walter Clayton Jr. (6.6) and Dylan Harper (6.2).

“Nolan always believed he belonged,” Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez said. “He always fights back, and he’s becoming the voice and presence that we believe he is. He’s not there yet because we also believe his ceiling is very high. These last 23 games are huge for him, huge for this group going into the summer, which will be the greatest summer of our lives.”

Olympic reactions, Rickenbacker potential, Newhook

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed on Wednesday.

montreal canadiens news

Landing at No. 4 in our annual Montreal Canadiens prospect rankings is two-way defenseman David Rickenbacker. He’s one of the most polarizing young players in the system, and while his injuries and lack of professional experience have led some to label him useless, it’s too early to give up on the 21-year-old blueliner. Whatever happens, it’s time to readjust our expectations. [Canadiens Top 20 Prospects – No. 4 Enigmatic Reinbacher]

Even though Juraj Slafkowski was a dominant force at the Olympics, Slovakia failed to bring home a medal, leaving a sour taste in their mouth. Ideally, he’ll use his Olympic frustration to motivate him in the final stretch of the season.

Captain Nick Suzuki was quick to praise two of his Team Canada teammates: Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand, and Vegas Golden Knights winger Mark Stone.

Injured forward Alex Newhook will be in uniform when the Habs face the New York Islanders on Thursday. This marks an early return from an ankle injury that required surgical intervention.

Adam Engstrom and Jacob Fowler (ill) were both unavailable for the Laval Rocket as they faced the Toronto Marlies on Wednesday night. Unsurprisingly, Laval fell behind by a good margin and lost a 4–1 decision, with the only goal coming from Luc Tuch (9).

Things went from bad to worse for Engstrom, as he would miss four weeks of competition with an upper body injury.

Team USA goaltender Connor Hellebuyck can’t stop winning. At the White House on Tuesday, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, awarded the gold medal goaltender the Presidential Medal of Freedom – considered the US government’s highest civilian honor. [New Jersey Devils]

MLSE head Keith Pelley sent a letter to Toronto Maple Leafs ticket holders on Wednesday. A sort of ‘State of the Union’ for the team, if you’ll pardon the expression. The letter explained why they could not publicly discuss the team’s deadline plans and their continued goal of producing a Stanley Cup winner. [Toronto Maple Leafs]

The Bruins’ gold medal winners are back in Boston. Charlie McAvoy and Jeremy Swayman joined most of Team USA at the White House on Tuesday. Three Canadian players in the race for Olympic medal

Three members of the Montreal Canadiens will have a chance to medal at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina, Italy.

Gold Medal Game, Team Canada vs. Team USA, Sunday, Feb. 22, 8:10 a.m. ET/5:10 p.m. PT

Nick Suzuki and Team Canada will face the Americans in the gold medal game, a repeat of the final in the 4-Nation Faceoff Tournament. Canada somehow failed to make it through the elimination games, requiring the heroics of Suzuki and Mitch Marner to defeat Czechia in the quarter-finals.

In the semi-finals, it looked like Finland, a team that always performs well in international games, was going to ruin Canada’s gold medal aspirations, but a late-game push resulting in goals by Nathan MacKinnon, Shea Theodore and Sam Reinhart was enough to ensure the victory for the Canadians.

As for the Americans, they suffered a major setback in the semifinals, however, as superstar Quinn Hughes scored in a 2–1 overtime win against Sweden. This led to a relatively easy semi-final match, in which the Americans easily defeated Team Slovakia.

Bronze Medal Game, Team Slovakia vs. Team Finland, Saturday, February 21, 2:20 PM ET/ 11:20 AM PT

While most predicted Canada and the USA to meet in the final, few expected Slovakia to challenge for another Olympic medal. Yes, they won a bronze medal at the last Olympic Games, but that tournament did not include NHL players.

This time, Slovakia is impressing against the world’s best players, and Montreal Canadiens star forward Juraj Slafkowski is leading the way.

Like most Slovaks, Slafkovsky faced a tough time in the semi-finals against the Americans, a team loaded with NHL superstars. But in the grand scheme of things, Slafkovsky has clearly emerged as one of the most impressive players at the Olympics, with three goals and four assists to his name.

It remains to be seen whether Oliver Kapanen will be in uniform for the Finns, and if so, whether he will actually be given a shift. As one of the youngest players at the Olympics, Kapanen has spent more time watching hockey than playing hockey, and although he dressed in the semi-finals against Canada, Antti Pennanen stuck him to the bench.

Either way, it’s certainly been a unique experience for Montreal’s second-line centre.

Canada and Slovakia lead the way as Capital Stars’ Olympic journey continues

Washington Capitals stars Tom Wilson, Logan Thompson and Martin Fehrvary will all have a chance to win a medal. It came after both Canada and Slovakia won their Olympic quarterfinal matches on Wednesday.

Canada’s game was absolutely thrilling, as they defeated Czechia 4–3 in overtime. The Canadiens trailed 3–2 until Nick Suzuki equalized, and Mitch Marner scored the OT game-winner.

Wilson received two penalty minutes in the win and currently has three points in four games, along with multiple hits. Thompson was the backup goaltender behind Jordan Binnington, allowing three goals. The 28-year-old Capitals netminder has started one game for Canada, coming away with a win and a .960 save percentage.

Meanwhile, Fehrváry recorded his first Olympic point (an assist) in Slovakia’s 6–2 win over Germany. The 26-year-old defenseman recorded a secondary assist on the team’s first goal, scored by Pavol Regenda.

Fehrváry led Slovakia in ice time on Wednesday with 22:01. He is the country’s leader in TOI as part of the top shutout pair so far through the tournament.

For now, Canada and Slovakia will wait to see who they play in the semi-finals. The last two quarterfinal matches of the day are Finland-Switzerland and USA-Sweden.

Olympic Men’s Hockey Quarterfinals: Scouting Reports and Predictions

The Athletic has live coverage of Canada vs Czechia in the 2026 Winter Olympics men’s hockey quarterfinal.

MILAN — The quarterfinals at the Olympic men’s hockey tournament are set following Tuesday’s qualifying-round action. Here’s a look at all four of Wednesday’s matchups.

No. 7 Sweden vs. No. 2 USA

There’s no shame in silver. But for the world’s greatest hockey players, particularly those from one of the world’s greatest hockey countries, there’s not exactly a ton of pride in it, either.

“I’ve got a silver medal at home,” Sweden’s Gabriel Landeskog said. “And I guess it’s something that sits there. Doesn’t mean as much as if it would have been a gold medal. If it’s a gold medal, it’s very different. We all want to win; that’s what we were kind of bred to do.”

Sweden’s road to gold starts in earnest Wednesday night against the United States, a gold-medal-level matchup that’s happening in the quarterfinals thanks to Slovakia’s surprising Group B victory. After three round-robin games and Tuesday’s perfunctory 5-1 rout of Latvia, the real do-or-die games start now. And while Canada and the United States — the other two gold-medal favorites — cruised into the quarters with three easy wins and a bye, Team Sweden has scuffled and shuffled its way here.

And they might be better off for it.

“You can cruise through it and then all of a sudden you’re tested in a way you weren’t prepared for,” Sweden coach Sam Hallam said. “It gives you a better feeling now that we’ve had these small things go wrong every game and had to look at things, adjust small things.”

It’s something Landeskog is getting a taste of with the Colorado Avalanche this season. After one of the best starts in NHL history — 31-2-7 — the Avs have lost nine of their last 15 games. Hardly a crisis, but potentially beneficial in the long run.

“That’s the same as over there, same as in the NHL,” Landeskog said. “You’re going to run into adversity at some point, and how you manage that is how you’re going to define yourself as a group, and how you handle that is up to us in the locker room. We’ve stumbled in the tournament so far. We’ve also shown some really good things, so for us, it’s just a matter of continuing to build, understanding that hopefully we’ve got another week to go here and understanding that we need to be playing our best hockey at the most important time, which is right now.”

The U.S., meanwhile, caught something of a bad break by virtue of Slovakia’s group win. Instead of facing a second-tier team, the second-seeded Americans get a seventh-seeded Swedish team full of NHL stars.

“(Wednesday) could be our last day,” U.S. defenseman Quinn Hughes said. “So we’ve got to be prepared. Playing a really good team.”

Based on Tuesday’s practice, U.S. coach Mike Sullivan seems to have locked his lines in place, with Jack Eichel centering Brady and Matthew Tkachuk, Auston Matthews centering Jake Guentzel and Matt Boldy, and Dylan Larkin centering Clayton Keller and Tage Thompson. Keller replaced Kyle Connor in the last group-stage game, as the Winnipeg Jets star finds himself a healthy scratch on the international stage for the second time in 12 months, following last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off.

The Americans certainly have an edge in goal. Connor Hellebuyck is sharp and rested, while Hallam will have to either go with Jacob Markström for the second time in 21 hours or with Filip Gustavsson (who was a little shaky against Italy and Finland) or 23-year-old Jesper Wallstedt (who has yet to play in this tournament).

The U.S. hasn’t yet been at its best — at least, what should be its best given the talent on the roster — in this tournament. The Americans’ game has been a little inconsistent, a little scruffy. But they feel they’re getting closer to their ceiling. No time like the present to find it.

“I think we’re just continuing to find our game,” said Jack Hughes, on the fourth line with Brock Nelson and J.T. Miller. “Getting more comfortable with each other, more comfortable with the systems. Obviously now it’s the quarters, so you’ve got to really lock in. But it’s such a short tournament. You’ve got to find your game early. Play each game with the same intensity and play hard.”

Added Dylan Larkin: “It’s nerve-wracking. It is. It gets you going, and I think that’s what brings out the best in guys. I’m excited for it. Every play, every puck’s going to matter.”

After the Swedes’ win over Latvia, their attention turned immediately to the Americans. The last time these two teams met, at the 4 Nations, Sweden eked out a 2-1 victory.

“We’ve got to stay out of the box,” said Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman, who noted that “selfishly” he was glad to get an extra game in as he works his way back to midseason form after missing nearly two months with an injury. “They’ve got a phenomenal power play, a lot of weapons on it. It hasn’t been too long since we played them in 4 Nations, but obviously some different personnel, Quinn Hughes is back. We’ve just got to make sure that we’re physical on their skill, try to stay out of the box, and play a patient game.”

No. 8 Czech Republic vs. No. 1 Canada

It is a rematch of the Olympic opener for both teams after Team Canada trounced the Czech Republic 5-0 last Thursday.

“I think last time we actually had a decent start against Canada, we had some chances, we know what we need to do, we have to play simple, put (pucks) behind, get a good forecheck, get to the net and find a way to score at least some goals,’’ Czech center Tomáš Hertl said after his team’s 3-2 win Tuesday over Denmark in the qualifying playoffs. “We can’t be scared. If we wait and wait, we know what they can do. They have the best player on the planet on the team. They can destroy you.

“You have to just play with confidence,” continued the Vegas Golden Knights center. “We can’t think about who is on the ice, because all four lines are good for them. You have to enjoy it and play hard. It’s one game, you know? You never know what can happen. We can get some bounces, we can score early, and it can go our way.”

But Hertl stressed again that what the Czechs can’t do is just sit back.

Besides, Hertl joked, it’s all part of their plan right now, playing Canada twice in six days.

“That was our plan because we said we probably can’t beat Canada in the same tournament twice,” he said, smiling. “We gave them the first win so now it’s our time!”

Veteran defenseman Radko Gudas said staying out of the penalty box against the No. 1-ranked power play in the tournament (44 percent) is paramount.

“They have some unbelievable players on their power play,” Gudas said. “Then putting pucks in areas where we can get it back, make sure that we make them turn every time. It’s going to be a great challenge for us. It’s going to be fun.

“Anyone who can’t get motivated for that game tomorrow, there’s something seriously wrong with them. They shouldn’t be playing hockey. So it’s going to be a great challenge for us but we’re looking forward to it. If we want to get a medal, we have to beat the best teams.”

The Czechs were a little too cautious and looked nervous early on in their win over Denmark on Tuesday. It wasn’t a very convincing performance. They’ll need a much better effort Wednesday.

Canadian captain Sidney Crosby was asked Tuesday after practice what significance, if any, there would be to play the Czechs again for the second time in six days.

“Maybe a bit more familiar,’’ Crosby said. “But at this point, you’ve got to go out there and play the game and execute. So regardless of how many times you played each other, I think you still got to go out there and do it.”

Added Bo Horvat: “I obviously expect them to play us hard again. They played us hard the first game. You know, they’ve continued to keep getting better throughout the tournament, and we got to be ready to go, for sure.”

The Czechs did try to set a noticeable physical tempo in the opener, but it didn’t produce the desired results. Canada didn’t back down on the physical stuff.

“I thought we matched that really well,” Horvat said. “We try to match anybody that we play. They came out hard and they came out strong and I thought we matched that really well. So we expect them to come out harder. Playing us hard again. So we’ve got to match that again.”

Team Canada veteran Brad Marchand could be back in the lineup Wednesday and may get another crack at facing former Bruins teammate David Pastrňák, with whom he says he’s remained close.

“I love Pasta,” said Marchand. “… I’ve loved where his game has gotten. He’s such a competitor. He was always a great player, but he was streaky early on. He’d get really hot and then really cold. He works extremely hard at his game and he’s become one of the top-five players in the game. He’s incredible, the way he controls the play every time he’s on the ice. His consistency level is at the top of the league. It’s really incredible what he’s done. And it doesn’t matter who he’s playing with. You could put him with the top guys on the team or some younger guys who are just learning the game and he’s going to affect the game the same way. He’s a very, very impressive player.”

Pastrňák had an assist in Sunday’s game but overall, still not the kind of play expected from a star of his caliber.

“Honestly, I haven’t played my best here yet, so just waiting, and hopefully I saved it for tomorrow,’’ Pastrňák said after the game Tuesday.

Martin Nečas of the Colorado Avalanche scored again Sunday on a blistering slap shot to the top corner. He’s been carrying the Czechs so far.

“His ability of skating and escaping in the tight spaces, he’s an incredible skater and he’s becoming a star year by year,’’ Pastrňák said of Necas.” Every year he’s getting better. It’s fun to see. Really happy for him, and glad I can help him out, and he knows I’m here for him. He’s fun to watch.”

No. 5 Switzerland vs. No. 4 Finland

This has upset potential, although Finland has rebounded strongly ever since opening the Olympics with a 4-1 loss to Slovakia, beating rival Sweden 4-1 and smoking Italy 11-0.

“Amazing team and amazing players,’’ Swiss captain Roman Josi said after the game Tuesday of Finland. “Every time the Finns play a tournament, whether it’s world championships or Olympics, they are always one of the favorites. They play really good as a team, so we will have to be at our best.”

Still, the Swiss are back-to-back silver medalists at the IIHF World Championships and have won three of their four games following Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Italy in the qualifying playoffs.

The Swiss also got a boost against Italy with the return of defenseman Andrea Glauser from a suspected concussion. Though he only played a little under 11 minutes and did not start the game with Josi, his regular partner, the fact that he was in uniform bodes well for his availability against Finland.

The Finns would be wise to stay out of the box; Switzerland has the third-ranked power play in the tournament at 31 percent after scoring two more with the man advantage Tuesday. The Swiss also have the second-ranked penalty kill (92 percent) in the tournament.

But, as Josi noted, Finland is always a medal threat — the country has failed to medal at only one of the five Olympics that included NHL players — and this year is no different.

Finland is always defined by team play and defense; the Finns have allowed two five-on-five goals at these Olympics.

“(The) win against Sweden showed for ourselves how we have to play to be able to win. It’s going to be like that in the next round,” Finland captain Mikael Granlund said after the win against Italy. “It’s going to be a highly skilled game where we have to be at our best all the time. (We’re) a really experienced group. We know what we need to do to be able to win games. That’s what we have to focus on.”

No. 6 Germany vs. No. 3 Slovakia

Just 21 hours after beating France to advance to the quarterfinals, Germany will be playing Slovakia in a win-or-go-home game. It’ll be Germany’s third game in four days, and fifth in seven. Slovakia, meanwhile, will be coming off three straight off days.

Can adrenaline make up the recovery gap for Germany? This is the Olympics, after all.

“It’ll help for sure,” German captain Leon Draisaitl said after an uneventful 5-1 victory over France on Tuesday. “It’s a big game, it’s a do-or-die game, right? So adrenaline will be going. We’ll make sure we’ll be ready to go.”

Thanks to Slovakia’s group win, eighth-ranked Germany won’t have to face any of the traditional powers in the quarterfinal. In fact, with Draisaitl, Tim Stützle, JJ Peterka, Moritz Seider and Philipp Grubauer in net, Germany could be seen as the favorite, despite their unremarkable group-stage performance. (And were Germany to win, and the other favorites prevail, the semifinals would be Canada-Germany and U.S.-Finland, meaning a vastly tougher road to a gold medal for the Americans than the Canadians.) But Slovakia won that group for a reason. Juraj Slafkovský and the Slovaks are rested and riding high. It won’t be easy.

“It’s always a great game against them, always hard,” Germany’s Nico Sturm said. “Especially when we play them, it’s always a battle. I expect a grind from start to finish.”

Neither team was considered a serious contender coming into this tournament, yet one of them will be playing for a medal. And both have good reason to think it’ll be them.

“It’s in your head, but you don’t want to focus on that, you want to focus on the game and just play your best game and then we will see how it ends up,” Slovak defenseman Šimon Nemec said. “We just have to play our best game, just put 100 percent effort and we will see. But yeah, we know we have a big chance to win.”

“We’re one game away from it, so we think about it and prepare the best way we can for (Wednesday),” said forward Dalibor Dvorský. “The people (back home) are really happy. The whole nation is watching. We just love playing good for our country and hopefully we can make our fans even more happy in the next two games here.”

Sturm said Slafkovský is becoming one of the elite goal scorers and playmakers in the NHL. His 10 goals in 10 Olympic Games since 2022 is the stuff of legends. So Germany better rest up.

“It’s important what we do now for the next 20 hours,” Sturm said. “Probably not going to have a ton of beers.”

Olympic quarterfinals, top prospects, lines

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories and content you may have missed Tuesday.

montreal canadiens news

We’ve reached the Montreal Canadiens’ top 10 prospects, as voted by you Habs fans. Thanks to his impressive size and untapped potential, towering Kelowna Rockets forward Hayden Poupaneakis bursts into the top 10. [Canadiens Top 20 Prospects: No.10 The Towering Paupanekis]

Juraj Slafkowski, Nick Suzuki and Oliver Kapanen should be in uniform Wednesday morning, representing their respective countries at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. The quarterfinals will start early, as Slafkovsky and Team Slovakia will face Team Germany at 6:10 a.m. [Canadiens Olympic Schedule: Three Players In Quarterfinals]

Suzuki anchored the third line between Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brandon Hagel and Florida Panthers winger Sam Reinhart at Team Canada practice on Tuesday.

As for Slafkowski, he has clearly been one of Italy’s best players, and is being recognized as such by many outlets.

The Habs were back in action Tuesday, although some players were missing from practice. Obviously, the Olympians were not in Brossard, but Patrik Laine, who was scheduled to return to play in the near future, missed practice with a lower body injury and is considered day-to-day.

Alex Newhook practiced, but was wearing a non-contact jersey. Newhook’s original recovery period was four months, meaning he should be ready in mid-March. That being said, his recovery is going pretty well, maybe even better than anticipated when the injury first occurred.

New goaltending coach Marco Marciano was also working hard, spending time working on the nuances of the game with his new students.

Shockingly or not, Lane Hutson and Ivan Demidov were among the first players to hit the ice during practice.

Key findings after USA, Canada reach Olympic finals

For the seventh time in Olympic women’s hockey history, the United States and Canada will play for gold on Thursday at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics.

The United States and Canada have faced off in only one gold medal game since the addition of women’s hockey to the Olympics in 1998. Thus, it comes as no surprise that the rivals meet once again on the big stage.

Canada leads all nations in women’s Olympic ice hockey with five gold medals. The Americans have won twice, most recently at the 2018 PyeongChang Games.

The United States advanced to the final with a 5-0 win over Sweden on Monday, improving to 6-0-0-0 in Olympic play. The Americans outscored opponents 36–1 in six games; They have not allowed a goal since their opener against Latvia on February 5.

Kayla Barnes became the 15th different American to record a goal in these Games. She was one of five different USA skaters to find the back of the net in the semifinals, joining Kendall Coyne Scofield and Hayley Scamurra, who scored her third goal of the tournament.

Canada maintained its full presence in the gold medal game, albeit less effectively than its American counterparts. Captain Marie-Philippe Poulin scored two goals as Canada registered a 2-1 win over Switzerland on Monday.

The Canadians outscored opponents 21–8 and were 5–0–0–1 heading into the finals – with the only loss coming a 5–0 loss at the hands of the United States. Canada defeated the Swiss 4–0 in its Olympic opener, but found the going tough to win in the semi-finals. A goal by Rachel Enzler at 4:53 of the third period allowed the Canadians to maintain a one-goal lead for the remainder of regulation, despite a 46–8 shots advantage.

The United States are the favorites to go to the final – and it’s not hard to see why. In addition to their complete dominance over opponents in these games, the Americans have won their last seven international meetings against Canada, dating back to the 2025 IIHF Women’s World Championship in Czechia. Yet Canada’s struggles could be easily forgotten with a win Thursday, when they face Team USA for the gold medal at 1:10 p.m. Eastern time.

clash of styles

You don’t have to look too hard to see where these two teams differ.

The United States’ strength comes from their dynamic lineup balance, allowing coach John Wrobleski to roll four forward lines and three defensive pairings with relative ease. This is largely thanks to the massive influx of pro-ready NCAA talent – like Caroline Harvey, Layla Edwards, Abby Murphy and Joey Dunn, to name a few. Harvey, a senior at the University of Wisconsin, leads all Olympic skaters with nine points and a plus-14 rating.

Contrast that with Canada, which doesn’t feature any collegiate talent on its roster. Its youngest skater is 24-year-old Jen Gardiner, who is already in the middle of her second PWHL season.

Ten different American skaters scored at least five points in six games. The other nine nations combined have nine skaters; There are three in Canada.

In a tough semi-final match against Switzerland, Canadian coach Troy Ryan relied heavily on his top forward line of Poulin, Sarah Fillier and Daryl Watts. Fillier led everyone with 20:01 TOI, and Poulin scored all of Canada’s goals on Monday. He’ll likely get a similar ice time Thursday with Olympic glory.

That doesn’t mean Poulin, Fillier and Watts, along with some other notable contributors like Julia Gosling and Emily Clark, aren’t able to keep the Canadian attack in games, but it will be an uphill battle against an American team that has made depth its biggest asset.

no asterisk this time

As Canada prepares for another showdown against the Americans, last Tuesday’s crushing defeat is fresh in the mind. Of course, Canadians might argue that a 5-0 final – the largest margin of victory between Canada and the United States at the Olympic level, men’s or women’s – requires an asterisk.

Canada’s lineup did not include Poulin, who missed two games with a lower-body injury after taking an illegal hit from Czechia’s Kristina Kaltunkova. As far as influence goes, there is no player more important to Canada’s success than “Captain Clutch”.

Both teams hope to stay healthy for the gold medal game on Thursday. No asterisks this time – just best-at-the-best hockey.

History is watching you

Palin registered her name in the history books on Monday. After tying Hockey Hall of Famer Hayley Wickenheiser for the all-time Olympic goals lead in Canada’s 5-1 win over Germany on Saturday, Poulin solidified her status as the all-time Olympic women’s hockey goal leader by scoring twice. Palin now has 20 goals in 26 Olympic games – the first female player to break the 20-goal mark.

Now the focus turns to Team USA captain Hillary Knight.

Knight scored the 14th Olympic goal of her career in the opener against Latvia, moving her into a three-way tie with Natalie Darwitz and Katherine King on the all-time American leaderboard. The Knights announced ahead of the 2025–26 PWHL season that this year’s winter games would be their last. It’s only fitting that the 36-year-old could end her historic Olympic career with the ultimate goal of taking sole possession of the record books for the USA.

Poulin and Knight have a history of showing up when games matter most. The stage is set for a storybook ending in what could be the final Olympic contest for both rival captains.

All-Star Goalkeeper Battle

The two front-runners face off in the gold medal game for 2025-26 PWHL Goaltender of the Year. Montreal Victoire goaltender Ann-Rene Desbiens is the favorite heading into the first half with a 9-4-0 record with a league-best 1.15 goals-against average (GAA) and .954 save percentage. Behind her is Erin Frankel, who led the Boston Fleet to first place in the PWHL standings with a 9-2-2 record, 1.35 GAA and .946 save percentage.

There was an advantage in Milan-Cortina. Frankel allowed only one goal on 67 shots in five games for the Americans; He leads all Olympic goalkeepers with an absurd 0.25 GAA and .985 save percentage. The 26-year-old is the anchor of an American goaltending group that has not allowed a single goal in 16 periods, and sets an Olympic ice hockey record with an active shutout streak of 331:23.

Desbiens has a respectable 1.81 GAA and .901 save percentage in four games for Canada, but he is at a disadvantage against a powerful American attack that scored five points against him last week. The red-hot Frankel doesn’t leave much room for error in the opposing net.

brace for impact

Even a 5-0 lead didn’t stop Murphy from crashing into Swedish goalkeeper Emma Soderberg in Monday’s second period. Murphy received a minor two-minute penalty for goalkeeper interference, however, it was denied by Sweden defender Jessica Adolfsson’s counter-attack.

It’s a prime example of the gritty, sometimes controversial edge that makes Murphy such a nuisance on the ice.

It’s apt to compare the 23-year-old’s self-indulgence to that of Florida Panthers agitator Brad Marchand. Murphy isn’t just a supreme talent and physical presence on the ice – he’s an elite destroyer who loves to get under the opponent’s skin. That was on display last week, when Murphy drew four of Canada’s five penalties in a lopsided victory over the United States.

In the gold medal game against rival Canada, Murphy won’t need much motivation to meet this moment. You can expect a tense, physical game and Murphy should be right at the center of it.

Olympic Hockey History & Stats: Guide to NHL & International Records

Olympic Hockey History & Stats: A Comprehensive Guide to NHL and International Records

Ice hockey and field hockey have long been pillars of the Olympic Games, capturing the imaginations of sports fans across the globe. For Indian sports enthusiasts, the word “Olympic Hockey” often invokes the golden era of Dhyan Chand. However, on the global winter stage, Ice Hockey holds a similar prestige, defined by high-speed action and the involvement of NHL superstars. In this guide, we dive into the evolution of Olympic hockey, key stats, and the impact of professional players on the world stage.

The Evolution of Olympic Hockey

While Field Hockey has been a mainstay in the Summer Olympics since 1908 (with India famously winning 8 gold medals), Ice Hockey made its debut at the 1920 Summer Olympics before moving to the inaugural Winter Games in 1924.

Initially, the tournament was dominated by Canada, but the Cold War era saw the rise of the Soviet Union’s “Red Machine.” For decades, the Olympics were strictly for amateur players. This led to the famous 1980 “Miracle on Ice,” where a group of American college students defeated the seasoned Soviet professionals.

The NHL Era: Bringing the Pros to the Ice

A pivotal moment in Olympic history occurred in 1998 at the Nagano Games, when the National Hockey League (NHL) allowed its players to participate for the first time. This transition shifted the Olympics from an amateur showcase to a “Best-on-Best” international spectacle.

  • Nagano 1998: The Czech Republic, led by Dominik Hašek, won gold, proving that NHL participation leveled the playing field.
  • Top Performers: NHL legends like Teemu Selänne (Finland) hold the record for most career points in the Olympics (43 points).
  • Recent Trends: The NHL did not participate in 2018 or 2022 due to scheduling and health concerns, but fans are eagerly awaiting their return in 2026.

Key International Records & Statistics

Understanding the stats helps appreciate the dominance of certain nations. In Ice Hockey, the “Big Six” (Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland, and the Czech Republic) have historically dominated the podium.

CategoryRecord HolderStatistic
Most Gold Medals (Men’s Ice Hockey)Canada9 Golds
Most Olympic Points (Individual)Teemu Selänne (FIN)43 Points
Most Field Hockey GoldsIndia8 Golds

The Transition of Talent: NHL vs. International Play

The style of play often differs between the NHL and the Olympics. Olympic rinks are traditionally larger (International size) compared to the narrower NHL rinks. This favors skaters with high speed and technical passing over physical “grinding” play. However, in recent years, many Olympic venues have adopted NHL-sized rinks to accommodate professional stars.

Conclusion

Olympic hockey serves as the ultimate bridge between domestic professional leagues like the NHL and national pride. Whether it is the tactical brilliance of Field Hockey where India is finding its resurgence, or the lightning-fast intensity of Ice Hockey, the Olympic records tell stories of grit, national identity, and athletic excellence. As we look toward future games, the potential return of NHL players promises to add another thrilling chapter to this storied history.

  • USA 5 – 1 Germany: The Americans showcased their speed, overwhelming the German defense with a flurry of goals in the second period.
  • Finland 3 – 0 Switzerland: A defensive clinic by the Finns resulted in a clean sheet, proving why they are perennial medal contenders.
  • Slovakia 2 – 3 Czechia (OT): The “Velvet Derby” went into overtime, with Czechia clinching a crucial win in the final minutes.

Key Highlights & Game Analysis

The standout performance of the day belonged to the Canadian power-play unit. After a slow start in the tournament, Canada’s special teams converted twice against Sweden, shifting the momentum of the game. Meanwhile, the USA’s young roster continues to impress, with their top-line center recording a hat-trick against Germany.

From an analytical perspective, teams are shifting toward a high-press defensive strategy. Finland, in particular, utilized a “neutral zone trap” that completely stifled the Swiss transition game. Tennis Rules Explained: Scoring, Gameplay & Key Terms (Beginner’s Guide)

Tennis Rules Explained: Scoring, Gameplay & Key Terms (Beginner’s Guide)

Tennis is one of the most popular individual sports in India, thanks to legends like Leander Paes, Sania Mirza, and Rohan Bopanna. Whether you are picking up a racket at your local club or watching Wimbledon on TV, understanding the unique tennis scores and rules is essential. This guide breaks down the basics for every beginner.

The Tennis Scoring System: Beyond Numbers

The most confusing part for newcomers is often the scoring. Tennis doesn’t use 1, 2, 3, or 4. Instead, it follows a traditional sequence:

  • 0 Points: “Love”
  • 1st Point: 15
  • 2nd Point: 30
  • 3rd Point: 40
  • 4th Point: Game

If both players reach 40-40, it is called a Deuce. To win from a deuce, a player must win two consecutive points: the “Advantage” point followed by the winning point. If the player with the advantage loses the next point, the score returns to deuce.

Sets and Matches

To win a match, you must win sets, and to win sets, you must win games. In most professional formats (and local tournaments in India):

  • A Set is won by the first player to win 6 games, with a lead of at least two games.
  • If the set score reaches 6-6, a Tie-break is played to determine the winner of the set.
  • Matches are usually “Best of Three” sets for women and most ATP events. In Grand Slams, men play “Best of Five.”

Gameplay: How the Game Starts

Every point starts with a Serve. The server stands behind the baseline and must hit the ball into the diagonally opposite service box. Players get two attempts (First Serve and Second Serve). If the ball hits the net but lands in the correct box, it is a “Let” and the serve is retaken.

Once the serve is in, the Rally begins. Players must hit the ball over the net and within the boundaries of the court. In singles, the narrower “inner” lines are used; in doubles, the wider “alleys” are included.

Key Tennis Terms to Know

  • Ace: A legal serve that the receiver does not touch.
  • Fault: A failed serve (hitting the net or landing outside the service box).
  • Double Fault: Missing both serves, resulting in a point for the opponent.
  • Volley: Hitting the ball before it touches the ground.
  • Break Point: A situation where the receiver is one point away from winning a game against the server.

Conclusion

Understanding tennis rules might seem daunting at first due to terms like “Love” and “Deuce,” but once you get the hang of the 15-30-40 rhythm, the game becomes incredibly addictive. Tennis is a fantastic way to stay fit and develop mental discipline. Now that you know the basics, grab a racket and head to the nearest court!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Why is zero called “Love” in tennis?

While the exact origin is debated, many believe it comes from the French word “l’oeuf,” meaning “the egg,” representing the shape of a zero.

2. What happens if the ball hits the line?

In tennis, the lines are considered part of the court. If any part of the ball touches the white line, it is “In.”

3. How long does a typical tennis match last?

A standard best-of-three-sets match usually lasts between 90 minutes to 2 hours, though professional matches can go much longer.

4. Can I play doubles on a singles court?

Yes, but you must use the outer “doubles alleys” to ensure the court is wide enough for four players.

Kayle Osborne among three Sirens to make Canada Olympic roster

The New York Sirens’ starting goaltender is headed to Milano Cortina this February.

Kayle Osborne was one of three Sirens selected to Team Canada’s 23-player roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics, Hockey Canada announced Friday afternoon. She joins forwards Sarah Fillier and Kristin O’Neill.

But while Fillier and O’Neill had all but solidified their roster spots after appearing in every game of the 2025 Rivalry Series against the United States, Osborne’s footing was far less secure ahead of the January announcement.

Reigning PWHL Goaltender of the Year Ann-Renée Desbiens and Vancouver Goldeneyes starter Emerance Maschmeyer head Team Canada’s goalie room. The IIHF requires each Olympic team to carry three goaltenders, leaving Osborne to fight with the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Eve Gascon for the final spot.

Gascon drew the start in the first of four Rivalry Series games on Nov. 6, allowing four goals on 22 shots. Osborne followed two days later, making 27 saves on 32 shots in a 6-1 USA win. Team Canada chose Osborne over Gascon for the final two Rivalry Series games in December, but she did not appear in either contest, taking a back seat to Desbiens and Maschmeyer.

Yet Osborne’s trip to Edmonton alongside Desbiens and Maschmeyer was no guarantee of an Olympic roster spot.

Already a two-time finalist for National Goaltender of the Year in just two NCAA seasons, Gascon is well-positioned to succeed Desbiens as Team Canada’s goalie of the future in tournaments to come. No one would have blinked if general manager Gina Kingsbury opted for the 22-year-old college junior over the 23-year-old Osborne, a fifth-round draft pick from 2024.

That’s not to discredit Osborne’s brilliance in 2025-26. In fact, she’s been one of the top up-and-comers in the PWHL this season.

The Sirens are the only team in the League that hasn’t used a backup goalie. That’s largely a testament to Osborne’s steadiness in net, quickly embracing the starting reins after playing just 10 games as a rookie backup to Corinne Schroeder in 2024-25.

“Coming into the year, she wasn’t one of the returning, established starting goalies in the league,” Sirens coach Greg Fargo remarked this week. “But to me, in a short amount of time, she’s proven that she’s amongst the best.”

Osborne made her League-leading 11th start Tuesday and looked no worse for wear. The second-year goalie recorded her third shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over the Toronto Sceptres, making 31 saves en route to her sixth win of the season (6-0-0-5). Her 1.93 goals against average and .930 save percentage both rank fifth among PWHL goalies in 2025-26.

She’s been particularly instrumental in New York’s franchise-record four-game winning streak, sporting a 2.00 GAA and .956 save percentage with two shutouts across her last four games.

Evidently, she did enough to earn a nomination to Team Canada. Osborne and O’Neill will make their Olympic debuts this February–although O’Neill has represented Canada in the IIHF Women’s World Championships since 2021.

Fillier will make her second Olympic appearance after helping Canada capture gold in 2022 at the Beijing Games, where she ranked second with eight goals.

Sirens captain Micah Zandee-Hart cut from Team Canada final roster

New York defender Micah Zandee-Hart wasn’t as fortunate as her teammates. The Sirens captain was among the final cuts despite representing Canada at the 2022 Olympics. Zandee-Hart appeared in all seven games for Team Canada at Beijing, tallying four assists with a plus-six rating.

The 28-year-old has logged top-pair minutes for New York this season, providing a steady presence on the backend.

“I’m a little biased because I’ve played with Micah for a long time, but I think she’s phenomenal,” alternate captain Jaime Bourbonnais said Thursday. “She’s an incredible leader, incredible player. She works so hard. I think this season, she’s really proved how steady she is every time she’s on the ice. I just feel confident that nothing bad is gonna happen, and I think she really deserves it.”

Despite Bourbonnais’ shining endorsement, Kingsbury opted for a different look on the blue line. Ottawa Charge defenders Kati Tabin and Jocelyne Larocque rounded out a seven-player defensive corps headlined by two PWHL Defenders of the Year, Renata Fast and Erin Ambrose.

Team Canada aims to repeat as gold medalists after a successful 2022 tournament. Their five gold medals are the most of any nation since the IOC added women’s hockey to the Winter Games in 1998.

Olympic play begins Feb. 5 in Milan-Cortina.
