Granted, both players have performed largely poorly, but it may be difficult to spend big on a second striker. Furthermore, Howe’s team could still lose key midfielders in the summer. This would change a lot of their priorities, making Esposito simply a luxury signing.

However it is possible and Newcastle United have expressed interest.

Expectation: Los Angeles enters the season as the clear favorite to repeat as World Series champions and NL West champions. The offense is stellar, with reigning MVP Shohei Ohtani as well as offseason acquisition Kyle Tucker topping the lineup.

Worry: Pitching will be tough early in the season, with Blake Snell out due to injury and the bullpen being made up of cohesive pieces other than closer Edwin Diaz. But as long as they continue their invasion through October, they will arrive when the light is at its brightest.

San Diego Padres

Expectation: The Padres have made tremendous progress in their starting rotation, but their biggest strength is their elite relief corps. Even if the starters don’t go deep enough, the Friars still have the ability to easily field a bullpen game. San Diego could be excited for Mason Miller to have his first full season in the closer role.

Worry: The rotation is worrisome, there isn’t much depth after injuries left season openers Joe Musgrove and Griffin Canning on the injured list. There are positives with Nick Pivetta and Michael King, but not much behind them. If they want a shot at the NL West crown, they’ll need their starters intact.

san francisco giants

Expectation: The San Francisco lineup is fantastic. With the addition of Luis Arraez to the group, the offense looks healthier than ever. Especially with the return of most of their contributors from 2025, as well as a full season from Rafael Devers, the Giants are looking great.

Worry: The bullpen is terrible. With both Camilo Doval and Tyler Rogers gone, relief options are limited. The Giants need relievers to step up or they will lose heartbreaking games every night.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Expectation: The Diamondbacks made a lot of deals this offseason, but they didn’t do much to improve the group. However, the rotation is solid (Arizona is mostly running it back). After re-signing Zack Gallen and Merrill Kelly and bringing Michael Soroka to the Crew, Corbin Burns will join the starting group later this season as the team gets its ace back.

Worry: Like San Francisco, Arizona’s bullpen is extremely bad. After making 29 saves last year, the Dubs didn’t do much to fix their relief corps this offseason and will likely continue to struggle this season.

colorado rockies

Expectation: This is only for Colorado after a historically bad 2025. The Rox improved their starting rotation, and added veterans Michael Lorenzen, Jose Quintana, and Tomoyuki Sugano to join Kyle Freeland. They will contribute to a much more stable rotation than last year’s group.

Worry: Can the lineup produce consistently? Probably not. With youngsters like Hunter Goodman and Ezequiel Tovar leading the group, this is an offense with a lot of potential. But can others come forward to contribute? This remains to be seen.

chicago cubs

Expectation: This season Chicago will be a force that can dethrone the Brewers from their throne at the top of the NL Central. Despite losing Kyle Tucker to free agency, they signed Alex Bregman to enhance the offense and fill out their infield.

Worry: The rotation is fantastic, especially after trading for Edward Cabrera, but the bullpen is sorely lacking. There isn’t much behind Daniel Palenica that the Cubs can rely on to fill out their relief innings.

milwaukee brewers

Expectation: The value of brewers is decreasing year by year. And year after year they destroy expectations and win the division. But this offseason they traded away their best players without getting very good returns. Their main strength is an offense with everyone able to contribute, but it looks like this could be the year the Brew Crew’s surprise wears off.

Worry: Milwaukee has a solid rotation, but without ace Freddy Peralta and season opener Quinn Priest to anchor it, the onus falls on the youngest players like Kyle Harrison and Brandon Sprott to anchor the rotation.

pittsburgh pirates

Expectation: The Pirates may actually make the postseason this year. After failing to make the playoffs since 2015, Pittsburgh made several moves to upgrade its offense. But their real strength lies in their rotation, with reigning NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes returning to anchor the group.

Worry: Despite a great offense and a stellar rotation, the bullpen isn’t so good. After trading David Bednar to the New York Yankees last year, the only solid relief option is Gregory Soto. As long as the offense continues and the starters go deep, Pittsburgh will have a successful 2026.

cincinnati reds

Expectation: The Reds made the playoffs last year! It’s easy to forget after getting bounced so quickly by the eventual World Series-champion Los Angeles Dodgers. The team’s bright spot is superstar Eli de la Cruz. If he can finally put it all together, he could really have an MVP-caliber season for Cincinnati.

Worry: Cincinnati’s pitching is poor due to injuries. With Hunter Greene out for most of the season, the starting rotation will be manned by Andrew Abbott and Chase Burns. The relief squad isn’t very inspiring, but is solid enough to keep the club competitive in most games.

St. Louis Cardinals

Expectation: St. Louis will not reach the playoffs this year. They probably won’t be as competitive, but JJ Weatherholt’s MLB debut along with other young stars will be the story of the Cardinals’ 2026 season.

Worry: Everything. There is nothing particularly good about this roster other than its young stars. They traded away most of their talent this offseason in Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, Brandon Donovan, and Sonny Gray. This year, they will determine what their group will look like for the next few seasons, but will mostly flounder in the NL Central.

Expectation: Skubal would make history for Detroit. He would win his third consecutive Cy Young Award and join the likes of Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson in doing so. Barring injuries, Tigers fans can be excited to see them earn a lead in every five games.

Worry: Can the crime continue? The offensive breakouts of Javier Báez and Kerry Carpenter may not be able to bounce back for the Tigers. Their pitching is great, but the aggression is seriously lacking if they plan on making an AL Central run.

cleveland patron

Expectation: After signing a contract extension this offseason, Jose Ramirez will return to the hot corner for Cleveland, following up season after season with stellar performances. One of these days, he looks poised to take the American League MVP away from perennial superstar Aaron Judge.

Worry: The Guardians have consistently been underrated in the AL Central, but they have their work cut out for them this year. The rotation is surprisingly solid but the offense is tough outside of Ramirez and Steven Cowan. If they can maintain last year’s “Guards Ball” maybe they can keep their magic going in Cleveland.

kansas city royals

Expectation: Bobby Witt Jr. could seriously win the MVP award. He continues to put up great offensive numbers but his ceiling is very high. And Kansas City could return to the playoffs with World Baseball Classic stars like Maikel Garcia and Jack Caglianone.

Worry: Injuries deeply hurt the elite starting rotation last year. If this cannot be resolved this season, the Royals will be in a very bad situation.

minnesota twins

Expectation: There aren’t many expectations for a Twins team that gave up most of its top players at last year’s trade deadline. They have outfielder Byron Buxton who will look to have an even better 2026 after a tremendous 2025.

Worry: The rotation suffered a major blow with Pablo Lopez opting out for the season. They are sorely missing ace Joe Ryan filling out the back end with Baylor Ober and Simeon Woods Richardson.

chicago white sox

Expectation: It would be difficult for the White Sox not to move on to 2025. After a historically terrible 2024 season, they have improved to 19 wins and are looking to go even further. Offseason acquisition Munetaka Murakami is being considered a breakout candidate for the team, as the slugger signed a surprise 2-year deal with the club.

Worry: The rotation is terrible. Really. There aren’t a lot of good things to say about Young’s arm other than his lofty presence. Sorry Chicago fans.

toronto blue jays

Expectation: After coming so close to winning it last year, the Jays added offseason acquisitions Dylan Cease, Cody Pons, Max Scherzer, Eric Lauer and Tyler Rogers to pitch alongside Kazuma Okamoto and Jesus Sanchez on the offensive side.

Although they lost Bo Bichette in free agency, they are a much better team than they were before (and they were already really good).

But the biggest hope for Toronto fans is a stellar season from superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr., which will propel them back to the postseason.

Worry: The Jays are in the AL East, which is probably the toughest division in the junior circuit – maybe in all of MLB. They have made a lot of offseason moves but the question still remains to be seen if they can follow up their Cinderella story from 2025.

New York Yankees

Expectation: Yanks fans should be feeling good after opening night. He had a dominant performance against San Francisco Giants veteran Logan Webb, earning a 7–0 win after a 5-run shutout in the second inning.

Max Fried pitched 6 ⅓ innings of shutout ball, limiting the Giants batters to two hits. Aaron Judge, the four-time reigning AL MVP, will be eliminated after historically poor play.

Worry: New York has been content to run it back, making no new additions other than bringing back Cody Bellinger, Paul Goldschmidt and Trent Grisham.

They are coming off 94 consecutive winning seasons and could do so again, but in the bloodthirsty AL East, can they keep up?

boston red sox

Expectation: The Sox strengthened their pitching by adding top free agent Ranger Suarez while trading for Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo.

They have one of the most complete starting rotations with great depth in baseball. Peyton Towle won’t be in the starting five, but Conley will fill out the back end nicely.

Worry: Alex Bregman’s passing is sad. Can Caleb Durbin replace Bregman’s production? Probably not, but he’s a great young player and fills in at third base nicely for Boston. But if he can build on his stellar 2025 rookie campaign, Boston will be that much closer to returning to playoff glory.

baltimore orioles

Expectation: After an incredibly disappointing 2025, the O’s made several moves this offseason. That disappointment came largely from incredibly poor pitching.

They signed Chris Bassitt and Zack Eflin in free agency, and traded for Shane Baz and Andrew Kittredge. Despite Grayson Rodriguez leaving the possibility, these moves should get them closer to their 101-win season from 2023.

Worry: Like most of the teams on this list, can they hang on to the East? The Birds have done a lot to try to keep pace with the Yanks, Jays and Sox, but whether they can do so remains to be seen under new manager Craig Alberta.

Their offense looks much better with Pete Alonso at first base, but their ’25 was incredibly disappointing after poor seasons from young stars Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman, but if they can return to form the O’s will be set.

tampa bay rays

Expectation: Not much can be expected from this Rays team outside of Junior Caminero having another incredible year after hitting 36 home runs last season. After his dominant performance in the World Baseball Classic, he will be the only superstar Tampa Bay is seriously lacking.

Worry: Who’s going to take the mound? Shane McClanahan is returning from injury, but they traded Shane Baz and only added Nick Martinez. The Rays won’t compete in the AL East this year, but they can at least expect good performances from Caminero and Chandler Simpson.

Kevin McGonigle is headed to the big leagues. The Detroit Tigers announced that McGonigal made the Opening Day roster for the 2026 MLB season. The 21-year-old shortstop is the Tigers’ top prospect and one of the favorites to win the AL Rookie of the Year award this season.

McGonigal has quickly risen through the ranks after being selected by the Tigers with the 37th pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. In 2025, McGonigal was promoted to the Tigers’ Double-A affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves. After hitting 12 home runs and driving in 41 runs in 46 games, the shortstop earned the opportunity to fight for an Opening Day roster spot this season.

In spring training, McGonigal hit two home runs while driving in six runs in 44 at bats. The 21-year-old shortstop had a batting average of .250 and on-base percentage of .888. McGonigal gave Detroit a difficult decision and instead of sending him back to the minor leagues, he would remain as the starting shortstop.

Like other highly regarded MLB prospects, McGonigle would skip Triple-A and go straight to MLB. The Tigers are confident in McGonigal’s offensive abilities and his fielding was significantly improved during spring training. Now, he will slide into the left side of the infield next to third baseman Colt Keith.

McGongile is the consensus No. 2 prospect in baseball and is highly touted in Detroit. It may take time for McGonigal to fully integrate into MLB, but that shouldn’t scare anyone into his long-term potential in the big leagues.

McGonigle is ready to make his long-awaited debut in MLB, and the Tigers believe he can live up to expectations. If so, Detroit’s biggest addition in the 2025 MLB offseason could be one of the best prospects in baseball.

Despite his age, Nathan De Cat is already a central figure in Anderlecht’s midfield. He has been handed a rare level of responsibility for a teenager and is a major reason why Europe’s elite are circling him.

His blend of maturity, technique and sporting intelligence has made him one of the most coveted prospects in Belgium and Europe.

€30-35m price tag

Anderlecht are aiming high, expecting a fee in excess of €30m. His negotiating position has been weakened due to his contract situation, but Spurs are understood to be willing to pay €30-35m to secure the youngster and beat off competition.

However, they must first secure Premier League survival. De Cat will have no desire to play in the Championship next season. His current position, 16^th In the table and just one point outside the bottom three, there is a hurdle for any desire to sign De Cat.

Catcher: Cal Raley, Seattle Mariners

If Cal Raleigh couldn’t win MVP last season after having the best season ever by a catcher in MLB history, it’s hard to imagine a time when a backstop would take home the honor. The Seattle Mariners catcher led the way in home runs (60) with the fourth-best OPS (.948) and third-most RBI (125), and he was second in fWAR (9.1). For good measure, he was also a top five pitch framer. Despite the potential for some downside, Raley has a chance to win both a Gold Glove Award and a Silver Slugger Award at catcher in 2026.

First base: Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Toronto Blue Jays

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is coming off a season where he had a .397 batting average and 1.289 OPS with 29 hits, 15 RBIs and 8 home runs for a team that was one step away from winning the World Series. While his offensive production during the regular season has been a bit sporadic in recent years, he still boasts the highest OPS (.903) and wRC+ (154) among first basemen over the past two seasons, and he tied for fourth-most defensive runs saved at first (eight) last year. He is a superstar who has proven that he can carry a team in the postseason.

Second base: Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks

At a time when second base is thinner and weaker than in years past, Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star hitter Ketel Marte is setting the standard for the position. After winning the NLCS MVP in 2023, he has earned an All-MLB First Team selection and a Silver Slugger Award in each of the last two seasons at second base. That’s thanks to a spot-leading 147 wRC+, .911 OPS, 143 RBIs and 54 home runs along with the second-best batting average (.287) and third-highest walk rate (11.7 percent) over that two-year span.

Shortstop: Bobby Witt Jr., Kansas City Royals

It didn’t take long for Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. to prove he was one of the best MLB players. He showed glimpses of it in his first two seasons, but MVP-caliber play occurred the last two years. As of 2024–25, Witt has won a Gold Glove Award and a Silver Slugger Award at shortstop both seasons, and it came with All-Star nods and an All-MLB First Team selection. Among all shortstops over the past two years, Witt ranks first in batting average (.312), wRC+ (150) and OPS (.915), with the third-most home runs (55) and second-most runs (220) and stolen bases (68).

Third base: Jose Ramirez, Cleveland Guardians

Jose Ramirez is the gold standard at third base right now. The Cleveland Guardians star has won six Silver Slugger awards, made the All-Star Game seven times, and has been named to the All-MLB First Team at third base each of the past two seasons. Even as a 32-year-old in 2025, he hit 30 home runs with 103 runs batted in and set career highs in stolen bases (44), along with his highest batting average (.283) over the past five years. Among his teammates at the hot corner over the past two seasons, Ramírez ranks first in runs (184), batting average (.292), wRC+ (147), fWAR (12.4), steals (70) and OPS (.903), and he is second in RBI (174) and home runs (62).

Left field: Juan Soto, New York Mets

The New York Mets are moving Juan Soto to left field for the 2026 season. While this won’t do much to erase the fact that he isn’t good defensively, it does make him a top player in left field now. Still only 27, Soto’s 2019 resume includes a World Series title, an NL batting crown, a Silver Slugger Award in six consecutive seasons and four selections to the All-MLB First Team. He consistently performed like an MVP, posting a 1.005 OPS with 34 home runs and a .282 batting average from June to September, and he is one of four players in all of baseball with over 200 RBIs and over 200 runs scored over the past two years combined.

Center Field: Julio Rodriguez, Seattle Mariners

What’s particularly noteworthy about Julio Rodriguez is that he has boasted a career .800 OPS in his first four seasons despite starting slow almost every year. For whatever reason, the Mariners center fielder starts out cold and then gets hot in the summer. Establishing a .900 OPS with a .290 batting average, 45 RBI, 18 home runs and 13 steals allowed him to earn All-MLB First Team honors in 2025 for the first time in his career. He’s also excellent defensively in center field, and if we ever get a year where he performs well at the plate from April to September, he could make a serious bid for AL MVP.

Right field: Aaron Judge, New York Yankees

Watching New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge play baseball is a treat. He has had better four-year performances than Hall of Famers like Hank Aaron, Ken Griffey Jr. and Mickey Mantle during their best four-year peaks. That’s why Judge has earned three AL MVP awards since the 2022 campaign, including last season when he led the Majors in batting average. Judge is the only player in baseball with more than 250 RBI and more than 250 runs scored over the last two seasons – a stretch where he also leads the game in batting average (.326), walk rate (18.6 percent), home runs (111) and OPS (1.152).

Designated Hitter: Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani is likely going to become just the second player in MLB history to win NL MVP in four consecutive seasons. In related news, doing so would put him in special company with Barry Bonds as the only two players in baseball history to win MVP five times. Ohtani has made the All-MLB First Team in six consecutive seasons, and he ranks second in OPS (1.025), wRC+ (176) and home runs (109) over the past two years, along with the third-most RBIs (232) and fourth-most steals (79).

Starting pitcher: Tarik Skubal, Detroit Tigers

No player has won the AL Cy Young Award in three consecutive seasons. Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal is so good he could make history in 2026. Over the past two seasons, the back-to-back Cy Young Award winner has the second-lowest ERA (2.30), highest fWAR (12.6), second-best strikeout rate (31.2 percent) and K-BB rate (26.7 percent), third-lowest batting average (.199) and lowest WHIP. (0.91) among starters who have played more than 300 innings. There’s a reason he broke the arbitration record ($32 million), and why he’ll eventually become the highest-paid pitcher in baseball history.

Closer: Mason Miller, San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres gave up one of the top prospects in baseball to acquire closer Mason Miller at the 2025 MLB trade deadline. In half a season with the club, he posted a 0.77 ERA and a 54.2 percent strikeout rate in 23.1 innings while allowing a .096 batting average. Over the past two seasons, Miller has boasted a .148 batting average (first in MLB), with the third-lowest WHIP (0.89) and the highest strikeout rate (43.1 percent) among relievers. To put Miller’s 32.9 percent K-BB rate into perspective, that’s the same number as the 13th-highest strikeout rate in MLB over the past two seasons.

The organization is scheduled to interview Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken on Saturday as part of its expanding process.

In an article published on the organization’s official website, the Browns’ Kelsey Russo confirmed the interview’s timing.

Monken brings more than three decades of coaching experience, including 11 years at the NFL level, and is widely regarded for his offensive acumen. Cleveland requested and received permission earlier this week to speak with Monken amid Baltimore’s own coaching transition and uncertainty surrounding his future with the Ravens.

The Browns are seeking stability after dismissing Kevin Stefanski on January 5 following six seasons at the helm. Under Stefanski, Cleveland posted a 45–56 record with two playoff appearances, but recent struggles proved decisive, including a combined 8–26 mark over the final two seasons. Offensive inconsistency played a central role in the decision, positioning Monken’s resume as a potential catalyst for meaningful change.

Baltimore’s offense under the 59-year-old offensive coordinator ranked second in rushing yards per game during the 2025 season and previously led the league in red-zone touchdown percentage and passer rating. His familiarity with the organization also stands out. Monken served as Cleveland’s offensive coordinator during the 2019 season, overseeing career years from Nick Chubb and Baker Mayfield, though play-calling duties remained with then–head coach Freddie Kitchens.

Saturday’s interview marks the fifth completed meeting for the team during this hiring cycle. Cleveland has already spoken with Tommy Rees, Jim Schwartz, Dan Pitcher, and Aden Durde, as executive vice president of football operations Andrew Berry continues to oversee the search.

As the Browns weigh continuity against transformation, Monken’s interview represents a pivotal data point in determining whether the franchise commits to an offense-first reset or opts for internal familiarity moving forward.
