John Carew had quite a memorable experience at Aston Villa before retiring and turning to acting.
He joined the Villans from Lyon in 2007. This came as he scored 17 times for the French side, while also making key performances in the Champions League.
Carew lived up to expectations at Birmingham and became a cult hero at Aston Villa.
Acting career started in Birmingham
Carew, who also worked at AS Roma, spoke to gazzetta dello sport In an extensive interview. He recalled how his passion for acting was first born in Birmingham.
The former striker said: “In 2009, I was playing for Aston Villa. I was 30 years old. Some of my friends in London worked in the film industry, and one day they said to me, ‘John, you look interesting to be an actor.’ At first I didn’t believe it.”
He revealed that he first started taking lessons during his time at Aston Villa.
“Then I convinced myself and started taking courses. Acting allowed me to create a channel to express my feelings.”
The former player also claimed that it was Prince William who convinced him to move to the Premier League in 2007.
Revealing some background he said: “We met during a dinner with the royal family in Norway. I remember we talked only about football, and shortly after, he invited me to England to watch a match of his team Aston Villa. He convinced me to go there in 2007: for three consecutive seasons, I scored double figures in the Premier League.”
Additionally, Carew pointed to his good relationship with Prince William.
“He praised me. In 2019, we watched the play-off final against Derby County at Wembley together, securing our return to the Premier League.”
At Aston Villa, Carew scored 48 times and added 12 assists in 131 matches.
