Las Vegas Raiders QB Fernando Mendoza called a bust by Rob Parker before running the snap

Rob Parker thinks Fernando Mendoza is going to be ruined.

The child has not taken a single picture. Not a single representative training camp has been conducted. Haven’t thrown a pass that matters since the national title game. And we have to file the judgment in May.

What is the proof of that? The NFL left the Raiders on the primetime slate. This is the whole logic. Apparently, the people who plug the games into the time slot in the league office have better information about Mendoza than Jon Spytek. These are the same brilliant minds who come to Jacksonville every Thursday night and tell us it’s time to watch.

Fox Sports’ Rob Parker’s “Hot Take” Is Simply Ignorant

I pulled the clip a second time because I wanted to make sure I held it correctly. I did it. Fox Sports Radio. Thursday. Mendoza’s busted, don’t bother looking, Brady ruined the franchise. All this cooked in May.

First let me explain the obvious part. The Raiders won three games last year. Three. Whenever the league gave him a primetime window in 2025, he was unwatchable. Why on earth would Park Avenue hand them another Sunday night from a rookie quarterback’s college tape? They won’t do that. He didn’t. Lincoln Kennedy said the same thing on the Raiders squad show and Kennedy played here, which means his read on this makes about a hundred times more sense to me than Parker’s. You earn primetime. This roaster hasn’t earned dishwater from Andy Reid’s plate.

He’s not on Mendoza. This is the situation he went into.

The piece that really gets under my skin is the valuation. Or what is missing.

41 Touchdowns. 3,535 yards. Heisman Trophy. Natty. In Indiana. I said Indiana. Spytech will not even take trade calls on picks. Not “took them and passed them.” Did not pick up the phone. I’ve covered enough drafts to tell you when a GM is doing due diligence and when he’s already made a decision. This is decided.

Criticism of Fernando Mendoza from “anonymous sources”

Fernando Mendoza Raiders Rob Parker
Visualize images via Reuters Connect

Now, the anonymous ACC coach who spoke told ESPN that Mendoza doesn’t have NFL traits. Sure, whatever. Ever since I was secretly drinking beer in college, anonymous coaches have been misunderstanding quarterbacks. They missed Brees. Brady missed. Mahomes missed by a country mile. The track record of sinking anonymous scouts on top picks is, to put it mercifully, poor. And now we’re supposed to believe one of these guys as scripture because this quote fits the premise that Parker was already cooking in the chamber? No. I am well.

Kirk Morrison has been in the league for a long time. Morrison said Mendoza is the hardest worker he has seen in his years in college. Morrison’s name is on it. The other boy was not with him. Pick one for the ride.

Parker’s Tom Brady performance as Raiders owner is also ridiculous

tom brady las vegas raiders
Visualize images via Reuters Connect

Then we get to Brady and this is actually where Parker offers his hand to me.

Brady ruined the Raiders. That’s his line. The attacker. Hugh Jackson. Dennis Allen. Del Rio. Give Gruden a run. McDaniels shot himself on the side of the road. Antonio Pierce. Pete Carroll for a year. The franchise that nuked itself every 20 months for 15 consecutive years. Brady reportedly ruined it.

Get out of here with him.

I will come equal to you. I’m not the guy who’s going to die defending Brady’s minority stake. The questions of how practical a part-owner should be are real, and the people I trust on this beat are asking them every week. We can do that column some other day. But the version of history where Brady torches a thriving operation? You have to forget that the last decade and a half of Raiders football even existed.

Brady was in Spytek’s room. In Kubiak’s room. In the room when the front office ultimately chose the quarterback they wanted, not the quarterback they got. He is not wasting anything. It’s someone who is finally aiming the gun in a direction that makes sense.

Raiders hot takes are just for clicks and attention

Rob Parker Fox Sports Mendoza

And here’s the thing about what Parker is doing. He is not analyzing the team. He is making a clip. He knows the word Raiders prints engagement. He pressed the button. The button worked. I’m at my desk on a Sunday at 9pm writing about him, so well, he won the day.

This does not mean that he is right.

Honestly a read on the 2026 Raiders is more boring than a viral clip. The spine is in reconstruction for the first time in forever. Spytech has done more in four months than in the four years of the last three regimes. Kubiak’s scheme needs to fit the bodies on the roster. A quarterback may be good, may be great, may spend a year on the bench and clipboard. I’m optimistic, but I’m not booking flights to Los Angeles. Cousins are still cousins. The O-line is still a project. There is still a question mark on the receiver room. All of this is true at the same time.

But you don’t drop the word bust on the No. 1 pick in May because the TV schedule didn’t break out the way you wanted.

The kid hasn’t played a single snap.

Look at something. Then come find me.

This is their last chance to break out of Rob Leonard’s 3-4 scheme

I’m not here to tell you that Tyree Wilson went seventh overall after being drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders. she has not. Through three years, a 57.6 PFF grade, and a pass-rush win rate that ranks 106th out of 126 edge rushers from 2023. These numbers don’t lie.

But I’m also not ready to put a bust label on him and move on. not yet.

Here’s the thing about Wilson that gets lost in the frustration: The Raiders are asking him to do something he was never meant to do. They have drafted him as a traditional 4-3 defensive end, a wide-9 speed rusher who wins off the edge with bends and athleticism. That’s not his game. It never was.

Wilson is 6 feet 6 inches, 263 pounds. He is a power player. Length and leverage are his tools, not ankle flexibility and cornerback speed. And for three years, three different coaching staffs have tried to fit that square peg into a round hole.

Rob Leonard’s 3-4 could eventually change that.

No one is talking about this plan

rob leonard las vegas raiders

When Clint Kubiak announced at the combine that the Raiders were shifting to a 3-4 base under Leonard, much of the conversation focused on Maxx Crosby. Exactly – Crosby is the best player on defense. But the more interesting subplot is what this means for Tyree Wilson.

In Leonard’s system, Wilson projects as a 4-technique or 5-technique. This means he is hitting the inside with the tackle’s shoulder, using his length to control the gap and using his strength to collapse the pocket from the inside. That’s a completely different question than what he’s doing.

Think about it. Wilson’s struggles came when he was asked to win in space, turning the corner against NFL tackles who could mirror his running. Inside? The space shrinks. The game slows down. His height becomes an advantage rather than something he tries to compensate for.

Leonard coached Wilson as D-line coach the past two seasons. He knows exactly what Wilson can and can’t do. The change in plans is not accidental.

Tyree Wilson’s numbers behind the disappointment

Tyree Wilson Las Vegas Raiders
Mark J. rebilas-imagen images

Wilson’s 2025 wasn’t a complete disaster. He recorded career highs in tackles (35) and tackles for loss (8). He forced two to falter. He generated 35 pressures.

But the termination rate killed him. Wilson had 10 tackles missed, which was also a career high. 60.4 pass-rush grade which ranks 77th among qualified edge defenders. There were glimpses, but there was no stability.

The season finale against Kansas City provided a glimpse of what could be. Two sacks, two forced fumbles, eight pressures, 31.2% win rate. Granted, he was going against a backup tackle. But you can only beat who is in front of you and Wilson dominated that fight as he rarely has in his career.

The question is whether it was a preview or an external one.

The 5-year option has almost certainly expired

Tyree Wilson Las Vegas Raiders
Stephen R. sylvany-imagen images

The Raiders have until May 1 to make a decision on Wilson’s 5th-year option. It will cost approximately $13 million.

They are not picking it up. I would be stunned if they did.

Jon Spytek did not draft Wilson. He has no emotional investment in the pickup. And paying $13 million for a player who hasn’t earned a 60 PFF grade in three seasons is not consistent with how this front office operates. SpyTech wants value. Wilson, at that price, right.

That doesn’t mean Wilson is done in Las Vegas. This means that 2026 is truly the year to prove it. He’ll play out the final season of his rookie deal at around $8 million, and if he breaks out, he’ll either be extended or hit free agency with leverage. If he doesn’t, it’s someone else’s reclamation project.

ration gary blueprint

Here’s the optimistic case. Rashaan Gary was a top-15 pick for the Packers, who looked bad during his first two seasons. Then Year 3 hit, he found his role, and through October 2023, he signed a four-year, $96 million extension.

The physical profiles are similar. Both are long, powerful and took time to translate college dominance into NFL production. The difference is that Green Bay stuck with Gary long enough to let him click.

Wilson is his third head coach in three years. That kind of instability does not help development. Leonard represents his first real continuity – a coach who has been in the building, who knows his strengths and weaknesses, and who is now installing a scheme that theoretically fits him better.

He is nothing.

what to watch with tyree wilson

Tyree Wilson Las Vegas Raiders
Candice Ward-Imagen Images

The first phase of the offseason program is underway. Wilson is going to get his first real reps in Leonard’s system over the next few months. By training camp, we should get a feel for whether the 4i/5-technique role really unlocks something or whether the physical tools don’t translate at the NFL level.

I am not predicting a breakout. Wilson hasn’t earned that optimism. But I am also not writing him off.

The Raiders finally have a scheme that fits his skill set, a coordinator who knows his game inside and out and a front office that will give him another year to figure it out. If it doesn’t happen in 2026, it’s not happening.

But what if this happens? This defense suddenly has a real second threat facing Crosby. And that changes everything.

What the changes to Rob Leonard’s plans mean for the 2026 roster

Nobody talks about base defense anymore. This is the dirty little secret of modern NFL football – most teams spend most of their snaps in nickel or dime packages and the “base” defense is more of a philosophical starting point than an actual game plan.

So when Clint Kubiak stood on a stage in Indianapolis during the NFL Combine and announced the Raiders were shifting to a 3-4 under new defensive coordinator Rob Leonard, some people shrugged their shoulders.

They shouldn’t.

This is not a minor change. This is a complete identity improvement for a defense that was one of the worst teams in the league a year ago. And while the base package won’t dominate the snap count on Sunday, the 3-4 framework shapes every personnel decision Las Vegas makes between now and kickoff — in free agency, in the draft and in the film room. If you want to understand where this team is going defensively, that’s where you have to start.

What is Rob Leonard really building? with las vegas raiders

Rob Leonard Las Vegas Raiders 3-4 Defense
Mark J. rebilas-imagen images

Leonard is taking over as an NFL defensive coordinator for the first time, which is either a red flag or a sign of how much Jon Spytek and Kubiak trust him. Spytek worked hard to get Leonard the job after sitting in on interviews last year when Pete Carroll was also evaluating him for the DC role. Kubiak met him, was quickly sold and handed the keys.

Leonard’s background tells you the type of defense Las Vegas is trying to build. He learned under Brian Flores in Miami and Mike McDonald in Baltimore. Don’t expect a steady, vanilla 3-4. Expect multiple fronts, heavy doses of the 3-3-5 on third downs, constant stunts and rotations, and linebackers with real responsibilities before and after the snap. Macdonald’s fingerprints are all over this thing.

Kubiak called it “the starting point”. How far this defense goes depends entirely on the players Leonard has to work with.

What this means for the Raiders roster

Jon Spytek Las Vegas Raiders
Kirby Lee-Images Images

The Raiders spent four years under Patrick Graham’s 4-3 defense. Before that, Carroll’s score was 4-2-5. The roster was built around those plans – or mostly ignored them. Creates 3-4 immediate, specific needs.

You need a true nose tackle. A space-eating, double-team-absorbing anchor in the middle of the line. The attackers don’t have any. This need is reflected in free agency and the draft alike.

You need linebackers who can do more than just play downhill. In the 3-4, the outside linebackers are hybrid pass rushers who drive against the run and occasionally drop into coverage. It’s a different beast than the traditional 4-3 end. Leonard’s scheme will rotate bodies heavily and demand athleticism at every level. Right now, this roster is thin at both spots.

Max Crosby Fits: Full Stop

Crosby is a raider. The Baltimore trade is gone. And the 3-4 transition directly impacts what he’s already doing well.

Crosby has always been a stand-up edge player by nature. Operating as a 3-4 outside linebacker gives him more freedom in his pass-rush setup and the ability to crash inside or go wide depending on what he sees in the snap. This scheme doesn’t just accommodate Crosby — it could unlock a version of him we haven’t seen in a few years.

Tyree Wilson even has a genuine attempt to figure it out. He has been misunderstood as a traditional defensive end ever since Las Vegas drafted him in the first round. Going in with the 4i-tech plays on his length and strength rather than asking him to win with the athleticism and bends he doesn’t have. Wilson’s 2026 will define whether he has a future with this franchise or not. A change of plan gives him his best shot.

bottom line

NFL: Las Vegas Raiders head coach Clint Kubiak introductory press conference
Kirby Lee-Images Images

Scheme changes alone can’t fix a 14-game losing defense. But overhauling his defensive identity with a coordinator trained by the best minds in the business and a head coach willing to give him real authority is at least a coherent plan.

3-4 There is no magic pill. This is a framework. What Leonard and Spytek build inside between now and the draft in Pittsburgh will tell us whether this defense can be competitive in 2026 or whether it’s just another long year for Raider Nation.

Mysterious Rob Dillingham wrist injury makes Chicago’s chaotic trade deadline even more bizarre

Injuries continue to be an issue for the Chicago Bulls, especially to newcomers. Jaden Ivey and Anfernee Simmons are both out with injuries. Now, Rob Dillingham has faltered.

Dillingham suffered a strange wrist injury during Tuesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors. Although the Bulls won 130-124 in OT, concerns about the health of players are more uncertain than ever.

Afterwards, according to Julia Poe of The Chicago Tribune, head coach Billy Donovan provided an analysis of Dillingham’s injury. Necessarily saying it’s not terrible, but he needs time to get back into the team.

“It’s nothing too serious, but he has some wrist issues that need to be addressed in the offseason,” Donovan said. “He doesn’t feel OK all the time shooting the basketball. I think he’ll be OK once everything gets settled, but it’s something he’s struggling with and dealing with.”

Overall, Dillingham played 20 minutes and finished with five points and four rebounds.

Meanwhile, the bulls are in a very delicate position. In February, they made seven trades before the trade deadline, causing fans and observers to ask more questions about the franchise’s long-term plans.

Dillingham arrived in Chicago from the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of the deal that sent Ayo Dosunmu to Minnesota. Originally, Dillingham was brought in to give him more opportunities to score and play more minutes.

However, with Ivey, Simmons and their injuries, the validity of the Bulls’ decision making over the past month is under even greater scrutiny.

Meanwhile, the Bulls will kick off their five-game road trip in Los Angeles. On Thursday they will play the Lakers and on Friday they will play the Clippers.

LA plans for Rob Pelinka amid new ownership, business operations president

The Los Angeles Lakers underwent a change in leadership earlier this season, with longtime franchise owner Jenny Buss deciding to sell a majority share of the franchise to Mark Walter, who is now making some changes to the team’s brain trust. In recent days, the Lakers announced that executive Lon Rosen will be the team’s new president of business operations.

Rosen was the executive vice president and chief marketing officer of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Walter called on him to take on the role as president of the Lakers. With connections made during his time with the Dodgers, Rosen would enlist the help of Dodgers executives Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi, the combo who led L.A.’s operations during consecutive World Series title-winning seasons.

For Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka, this means he will work closely with both of them, collaborating with them on roster personnel matters. According to Dan Woik of The Athletic, Pelinka “will continue to handle basketball operations” while working within an “expanded front office.”

The next few years are going to be important for the Lakers; They have to start completely building around Luka Doncic, which will take them a year or two.

The Lakers front office is poised to play a key role over the next few seasons

Los Angeles Dodgers president Stan Kasten (left), president and controlling owner Mark Walter (center) and manager Dave Roberts watch batting practice before a game against the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium.

The Lakers’ trade for Doncic is one they would make 10 out of 10 times, but the roster they built was designed to maximize the James-Anthony Davis-led core. They are so lacking in defensive infrastructure that it will take a year or two for them to emerge as legitimate contenders in the West.

The team is preparing for the 2027 free agency period, when players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic could potentially hit free agency. It’s unclear whether Pelinka will remain with the Lakers until then, but it’s clear from their front office what the intention is.

Rob Dillingham has brutal wide-open dunk miss vs. Knicks

Rob Dillingham shocked the home crowd with his mistake on the court in the Chicago Bulls’ matchup against the New York Knicks on Sunday night.

Dillingham is halfway through the second season of his NBA career. He initially represented the Minnesota Timberwolves before being traded to the Bulls midway through the 2025–26 campaign.

The youngster has earned more playing time, giving him the opportunity to showcase his skills in Chicago’s rotation. However, their inexperience began to show at times, which was certainly the case in the final minutes of the third quarter. He went on a fast break while attempting a dunk, but was surprisingly unsuccessful.

It was a brutal miss for Rob Dillingham during the game. Additionally, the Bulls faltered in a close loss to the Knicks at home, resulting in the continuation of their losing streak.

Shot selection, ball movement and turnovers made the difference in this matchup. The Knicks won all three categories after making 45% of their total shots, dishing out 27 assists and limiting their turnovers to just 13. It wasn’t the same for the Bulls as they only converted 40% of their total chances, dished out 24 assists and turned the ball over 17 times.

Five players scored in double figures for Chicago in the loss. Matas Buzelis led the way with a stat line of 15 points and four rebounds. He shot 4 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 9 from beyond the arc and 4 of 5 from the free-throw line. Jalen Smith came next with 12 points and five rebounds, Isaac Okoro had 12 points and six rebounds, Guerschon Yabusele put up 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Patrick Williams added 10 points and eight assists.

Chicago fell to a 24–34 record on the season and finished 12th in the Eastern Conference standings. They are above the Washington Wizards and Brooklyn Nets while trailing the Milwaukee Bucks and Charlotte Hornets.

After nine consecutive losses, the Bulls will look to end this streak in their next match. They will be at home when they host the Hornets on February 24th at 8 PM ET.
