BILD reports on the 33-year-old today. He faces an interesting summer after missing out on the World Cup following an unsuccessful loan spell at AC Milan.

The striker was expected to be part of the team to travel to the United States, Canada and Mexico. He has even been in regular touch with Julian Nagelsmann for the past few months. Nagelsmann has consistently stressed the importance of the West Ham striker to the team.
When selected, he performed consistently well for Germany. But his form for West Ham and Milan over the last two years has been very disappointing. Several long-term injuries didn’t help.
Now he is out of the picture and needs to use the summer to decide on his future. It is a question of staying abroad or returning to Germany.
For now, he will return to West Ham after his loan spell at Milan. But BILD says it is ‘virtually impossible’ that it will remain there.
The striker would be very expensive for the Championship, with an estimated net salary of €4.5m. West Ham are therefore willing to let him go in order to free him from the ‘minimum transfer fee’ or wage bill.
werder bremen prospects
This presents a huge opportunity for his former club Werder Bremen. They wanted to sign him in January and Niklas Fulkrug was open to the idea. However, the deal was not economically feasible at the time.
That could change if Fulkrug receives a ‘substantial severance package’ to leave West Ham early. In that scenario, financial considerations would be secondary.
He wants to be needed, to showcase his talents and to enjoy playing football. And he wants to live near his birthplace: Hanover. Bremen is just an hour away, so their case will be strong. VfL Wolfsburg is another option.
The United States is also an option, but it does not want that. And there is interest in Italy, but his inclination is more towards Germany. Firstly, it will depend on what West Ham do, with free transfers not off the table.
